A Decade of Reflection: Early Childhood Care and Education in Ireland 1996-2006
(2006)
Hayes, Noirin; Bradley, Siobhan
Abstract:
You are welcome to the first seminar in a CSER series intended to consider aspects of early childhood education and care1 [ECEC] from a policy, research and practice perspective and promote discussion and debate. In this introduction to the seminar I want to outline some of the thinking behind the topic for today and present - with limited elaboration - a personal reflection to add to the discussion and debate. In choosing to reflect on the development and impact of early childhood education and care policy in Ireland it is no surprise that the decade 1996 - 2006 should act as the framework. Taking any decade as a period of review has a certain danger to it, providing a definition to it which may give a false sense of the reality of policy development and practice. Nonetheless, it could be argued that ECEC became a serious policy issue in Ireland in 1996 following the signing of the final sections of the Child Care Act in December and the implementation of the Preschool Regulations ...

A survey of the management of urinary tract infection in children in primary care and comparison with the nice guidelines
(2018)
Kennedy, Kieran M; Glynn, Liam G; Dineen, Brendan
Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to establish current practices amongst general practitioners in the West of Ireland with regard to the investigation, diagnosis and management of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children and to evaluate these practices against recently published guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Methods: A postal survey was performed using a questionnaire that included short clinical scenarios. All general practices in a single health region were sent a questionnaire, cover letter and SAE. Systematic postal and telephone contact was made with non-responders. The data was analysed using SPSS version 15. Results: Sixty-nine general practitioners were included in the study and 50 (72%) responded to the questionnaire. All respondents agreed that it is important to consider diagnosis of UTI in all children with unexplained fever. Doctors accurately identified relevant risk factors for UTI in the majority (87%) of cases...

An examination of the Children’s Rights Alliance (CRA) as a new social movement (NSM) utilising Habermas’ communicative rationality and core periphery theories
(2019)
Kenneally, Andre
Abstract:
The passing of the Children’s referendum in 2012 is viewed as a landmark moment in the continuing evolution of Children’s Rights in Ireland. Following a prolific period since the publication of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989 the insertion of Article 42A,’Children’ into the Constitution signalled a key moment in legitimising children’s rights in Ireland. This thesis will examine the role of the Children’s Rights Alliance (CRA) in children’s rights discourse as well as child rights based policy and legislation in Ireland. Utilising the theories of New Social Movements (NSM), the thesis will first examine if children’s rights advocacy as evidenced in the work of the Children’s Rights Alliance can be considered a new social movement. Further, utilising Habermas’ theories of communicative rationality and Peters’ core periphery, this thesis will interrogate how the CRA moved from a position of little or no influence (outer periphery) to a position...

An investigation of comorbid psychological disorders, sleep problems, gastrointestinal symptoms and epilepsy in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: A two year follow-up
(2021)
Mannion, Arlene; Leader, Geraldine
Abstract:
Research has recently focused on studying comorbidity in the autism spectrum but little research has been conducted on follow-up studies or conducting longitudinal research into these conditions. Mannion, Leader, and Healy (2013) examined the frequency of comorbid disorders in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and the predictors of sleep problems. The current study is a follow-up study conducted two years later with 56 participants. Age, gender, level of intellectual disability, presence of epilepsy, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and an anxiety disorder were assessed, along with administering the Autism Spectrum Disorder-Comorbid for Children (ASD-CC), the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and Gastrointestinal Symptom Inventory. The aim of the study was to determine if comorbid symptoms changed over time. An additional aim was to explore if there is a relationship between family medical history and history of autoimmune disease...

Barriers and facilitators to initial and continued attendance at community-based lifestyle programmes among families of overweight and obese children: a systematic review
(2016)
Kelleher, Emily; Davoren, Martin P.; Harrington, Janas M.; Shiely, Frances; Perry, Ivan J.; McHugh, Sheena M.
Abstract:
The success of childhood weight management programmes relies on family engagement. While attendance offers many benefits including the support to make positive lifestyle changes, the majority of families referred to treatment decline. Moreover, for those who do attend, benefits are often compromised by high programme attrition. This systematic review investigated factors influencing attendance at community-based lifestyle programmes among families of over-weight or obese children. A narrative synthesis approach was used to allow for the inclusion of quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method study designs. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Results suggest that parents provided the impetus for programme initiation, and this was driven largely by a concern for their child's psychological health and wellbeing. More often than not, children went along without any real reason or interest in attending. Over the course of the programme, however, children's positive soc...

Childhood, biosocial power, and the anthropological machine : life as a governable process?
(2015)
Ryan, Kevin
Abstract:
This article examines how childhood has become a strategy that answers to questions concerning the (un)governability of life. The analysis is organized around the concept of biosocial power, which is shown to be a particularzone of intensity within the wider field of biopolitics. To grasp this intensity itis necessary to attend to the place of imagination in staging biosocialstrategies, that is the specific ways in which childhood is both an imaginaryprojection and a technical project, and to this end Agamben s concept of the anthropological machine is used to examine how biosocial power hasbeen assembled and deployed. The paper begins with the question ofchildhood as it was posed towards the end of the nineteenth century, focusing on how this positioned the figure of the child at the intersection ofzoe and bios, animal and human, past and future. It ends with a discussionon how the current global obesity epidemic has transformed this one-timevision of mastery into a strategy...

Children: their place in organization studies
(2013)
Kavanagh, Donncha
Abstract:
This paper argues that children and childhood constitute a ‘white space’ in organization studies, which should now be explored, mapped and analysed. Rather than being separate, children and organization are deeply implicated in one another, which provides a rich basis for theoretical inquiry. The paper draws on Spivak’s concept of the subaltern and on actor-network theory to articulate how and where organization studies might critically engage with, and find a place for, children and childhood. It frames such an inquiry around six potential research trajectories: epistemological, methodological, ontological, temporal, political and reflexive.

Children's understanding of psychological problems displayed by their peers: a review of the literature
(2018)
Hennessy, E.; Swords, L.; Heary, C.
Abstract:
Background There is a widespread consensus in the literature that children who have psychological problems are more likely than other children to be excluded or rejected by their peers. The existence of this phenomenon has been established, primarily with the use of research on their sociometric status within groups of peers. Much less research has been performed on the way in which children develop attitudes and behavioural intentions towards peers with problems. Aims The primary aim of this article is to introduce readers to research on children's understanding of the nature of common childhood psychological problems, with a view to exploring the factors that might contribute to the development of negative attitudes and behaviour. Method Relevant publications were identified through searches of electronic databases and articles in print. Results From the early years of primary school, children are able to identify peers whose behaviour deviates from the norm and to suggest ca...

Constructions of Childhood in Ireland in the Twentieth Century: A View from the Primary School Curriculum 1900–1999
(2005)
Walsh, Thomas
Abstract:
Our concept of childhood is context-linked and time-specific. This paper traces the evolution of our conceptualisation of childhood in Ireland, focusing particularly on children aged four to six years of age, from 1900 to the present day. In the course of the past century, this perception has altered greatly in light of advancements in society’s understanding of children. There has been a gradual transformation in the position of children in society, and the rights and interests of children now receive unprecedented attention in the public domain. These changes have been influenced, and indeed catalysed, by dramatic social, economic, familial, democratic, religious, cultural and political changes throughout the twentieth century. While there are a number of sources outlining the position of children in society, this paper focuses on documentation from the education system, particularly the content of successive primary school curricula in Ireland. Analysis of documentation provides ...

Depressive symptoms among older adults: The impact of early and later life circumstances and marital status
(2013)
TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Objective: This article contributes to the literature on depression and the life course by examining the impact of both early and later life circumstances on depressive symptoms among men and women aged 65 and over in Ireland. Method: Data are from the first wave of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), a nationally representative sample of 8,504 community-dwelling adults aged 50 years and older. 3,507 respondents aged 65 years and over were included in the analysis. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the childhood and early adult life circumstances associated with marital status. A series of nested models were estimated to evaluate which childhood and adulthood circumstances are associated with depressive symptoms. Models were estimated separately for men and women. Results: Ill health in childhood and in later life has a strong and direct effect on depression in later life for both men and women. Other early stressors are mediated by later circumstance...

Development of the children's attributions about psychological problems in their peers scale
(2018)
Swords, L.; Hennessy, E.; Heary, C.
Abstract:
Background Research has shown that children's beliefs about the causes of psychological problems are related to their attitudes and reactions towards affected peers. This study describes the development of the Children's Attributions about Psychological Problems in their Peers (CAPPP) Scale, which assesses children's beliefs about the causes of an internalizing and an externalizing condition. Methods The 16 items comprising the CAPPP are derived from previous qualitative research findings. Five hundred and ninety-five young people, drawn from five different age groups spanning early childhood to late adolescence, completed a CAPPP Scale for each of two vignettes describing the behaviour of hypothetical peers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression. Results Modifications following consideration of psychometric properties and conceptual fit resulted in a 12-item scale. For both the ADHD and depression conditions, the components that emerged w...

Abstract:
ObjectivesThere is consensus that empowerment is key to recovery from mental health problems, enabling a person to take charge of their life and make informed choices and decisions about their life. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which empowerment affects mental health in young people. The current study involved young people aged 16-29years and examined empowerment as a potential mediator of the relationship between psychological factors (psychosocial, cognition, coping, and control) and mental health, well-being, and recovery from personal problems. MethodsA cross-sectional, Internet-based questionnaire study recruited 423 young people aged between 16 and 29 attending universities in England (n=336) and Ireland (n=87). Psychological factors, mental well-being, empowerment, and recovery from personal problems were measured using self-report measures. ResultsMediation analysis in both the single and one over-arching mediator models revealed that empowerment med...

Early Childhood Care and Education in Ireland and the Challenge to Educational Disadvantage
(2000)
O'Toole, Jackie
Abstract:
Acknowledging the common assumption locating the impact of education in its role to act as a mediator between origins and destinations, this paper examines Early Childhood Care and Education [ECCE], particularly the role state provided, compensatory education plays in challenging educational disadvantage. Initially operationalisation is made of the key concepts of ECCE, equality of opportunity and educational disadvantage. I then move to briefly describe the historical development of ECCE and compensatory education. Three state provided compensatory education programmes are identified: Rutland Street Project, Breaking the Cycle and Early Start. I conclude by outlining the significant impact early interventions can have in a young child's life and endorse the notion that targeting towards more disadvantaged children and their families is an initial prerequisite in the challenge to educational disadvantage.

Early-life circumstances and later-life loneliness in Ireland
(2014)
TIMONEN, VIRPI
Abstract:
Purpose of the Study: This article examines the impact of early- and later-life circumstances on loneliness among people aged 65+ in Ireland. Design and Methods: Data are from the first wave of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing, a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling adults aged 50+. The participants (N = 2,645) aged 65+ were included in the analysis. Because of the large number of never married persons in the older Irish population, we first used a multinomial logistic model to examine which childhood circumstances are associated with current marital status. We then estimated multiple regression models for loneliness, in stages conforming to the life course, to examine the extent to which early events are mediated by later events. Results: Poor childhood socioeconomic status (for men and women) and parental substance abuse (for men) have direct effects on loneliness at older ages. Implications: The results indicate the significance of the childhood environmen...

Defresne, P
Abstract:
No effective treatment has been demonstrated for patients with acute transverse myelopathy. In a multicentre controlled study, 12 children with severe acute transverse myelopathy were treated with intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) and compared with a historical group of 17 patients. The treatment had a significant effect on the proportion of patients walking independently at I month and on the proportion with full recovery at I year, with no differences in the frequency of complications between the two groups.

Empowering children and young people: an access to justice assessment of mental health law and policy
(2016)
Moloney, Catriona
Abstract:
This thesis aims to comparatively assess the Irish government’s national, international and regional obligations to respect, protect and fulfil children’s access to justice rights under mental health law, policy and practice. It considers the importance of rights for children and why children should be viewed as rights-holders. It explores the Capability Approach, the sociology of childhood and a rights-based approach to children’s issues. This thesis considers the implications of the European Convention on Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for the development of mental health laws from a child rights perspective. This research compiles and analyses the relevant human rights instruments and interpretive sources required for the selection of human rights standards and indicators for the development in this thesis of a Child Rights Access to Justice Impact Assessment (CRAJIA) tool. The CRAJIA tool is u...

Every Wednesday I am happy: childhoods in an Irish asylum centre
(2011)
White, Allen
Abstract:
In Ireland, asylum seekers are placed into a system of dispersed ‘direct provision’ reception centres across the country. This paper argues that the frequently contradictory and ambiguous positions created for children living within the Irish asylum system reflect the uncertainties and ambiguities surrounding them as immigrants (as part/not part of host societies), children (as child/not adult), and asylum seekers (as separated-out populations in dispersal centres). Based on research in a specific asylum dispersal centre, this paper will explore the ways in which the spatialities of the children's lives reflect and constitute these contradictions and ambiguities in a host of different ways.
