Advocacy: a rights issue: a reflection document, 2001.
(2001)
Birmingham, Deborah; Forum of People with Disabilities.
Abstract:
"Advocacy in my opinion is the Politics of Empowerment. Choices and Rights often remain aspirational rather than actual in disabled peoples lives. Advocacy and the role of advocates are central to collective and cultural change. Its not just about role-modelling its about actual words that articulate an experience of vulnerability and oppression. Advocacy, for me, is knowing that other people are going to pull me through a tough time. Discrimination is not just a one-off incident, its a schematic process, which annihilates your self-esteem and ultimately breaks or shapes your identity Advocacy is about not colluding with the system or the status quo. As a disabled woman, my advocates come from two different communities: the Traveller community and the Disability Community Advocates actually explain what sexism or racism is and then leave you with the tools to tackle the specific issues in your life." All Welcome Here? Studies on Anti-Immigration Attitudes and Discriminatory Behaviour towards Ethnic Minorities in Irish and European Contexts
(2020)
GUSCIUTE, EGLE
Abstract:
The main aim of this thesis is to examine prejudice, via anti-immigration sentiment, and discriminatory behaviour in Ireland and other European countries. The thesis consists of four separate papers which constitute four empirical chapters. Studies 1, 2 and 3 use European Social Survey in addition to other datasets to examine attitudes towards different sub-groups of migrants. Study 4 examines discrimination via a field experiment. The thesis has three, broad, main aims: i) to examine the hypothesis that anti-migrant sentiment can be explained via the perceived objective and economic threat which migrants pose to the native population, ii) to examine attitudes towards specific sub-groups of migrants which reflect the current migratory inflows and public debate, with a particular focus on Muslim migrants and asylum seekers, and iii) to investigate the extent of discrimination towards ethnic minorities in the Irish context. Study 1 examines if individuals in occupations and sector...

Analysing the experience of discrimination in Ireland
(2012)
McGinnity, Frances; Watson, Dorothy; Kingston, Gillian
Abstract:
Discrimination undermines equality, and may have damaging consequences for the particular individuals involved. Monitoring the extent of discrimination is thus a very valuable exercise. However, discrimination is difficult to measure, as it is rarely observed directly. This report relies on the self-reported experiences of discrimination among the general population. It investigates discrimination using a large, representative sample of the population in Ireland using a special module of the Quarterly National Household Survey carried out by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in 2010. The survey asked individuals whether they had experienced discrimination in a number of social situations over the previous two years, and provides important baseline information on a number of key issues: • The level of discrimination experienced. • The social contexts in which discrimination occurs. • The social characteristics of those who report discrimination. • The perceived grounds of discrimin...

Architecture of exclusion: the struggle for land and legitimacy of Palestinians under Israeli law
(2017)
Abu Hussein, Hadeel
Abstract:
This research focuses on land law and provides an overview of the right to land under international law, followed by a background of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Subsequently, exploring the underpinning of the land regime in Israel, while focusing on land expropriation and forced housing eviction. The land is one of the core resources of human existence, development and activity. Therefore, it is a basis of political power of social and economic status. Land regimes and planning regulations play a dynamic role in deciding how competing claims over resources will be resolved. According to the legal geography theory, law and space are significant aspects of one another, and they examine, among other things, how spatial ordering impacts legal regimes and how legal rules form social and human space. How did the law shape the development of social and political space? Examining the state of Israel provides an example for ‘filling the gaps and silences in dominant historical narrativ...

Classification of narcotics in solid mixtures using principal component analysis and Raman spectroscopy
(2016)
Ryder, Alan G.
Abstract:
Eighty-five solid samples consisting of illegal narcotics diluted with several different materials were analyzed by near-infrared (785 nm excitation) Raman spectroscopy. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to classify the samples according to narcotic type. The best sample discrimination was obtained by using the first derivative of the Raman spectra. Furthermore, restricting the spectral variables for PCA to 2 or 3% of the original spectral data according to the most intense peaks in the Raman spectrum of the pure narcotic resulted in a rapid discrimination method for classifying samples according to narcotic type. This method allows for the easy discrimination between cocaine, heroin, and MDMA mixtures even when the Raman spectra are complex or very similar. This approach of restricting the spectral variables also decreases the computational time by a factor of 30 (compared to the complete spectrum), making the methodology attractive for rapid automatic classification ...

Abstract:
Outcome 5 of the Irish Better Outcomes, Brighter Futures national youth policy framework ( Connected, respected, and contributing to their world ) offers a suitable way to study psychosocial determinants of adolescent health. The present study (1) provides nationally representative data on how 15- to 17-year-olds score on these indicators; (2) compares sexual minority (same- and both-gender attracted youth) with their non-minority peers. We analyzed data from 3354 young people (aged 15.78 ± 0.78 years) participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Ireland. Age and social class were associated with the indicators only to a small extent, but girls were more likely than boys to report discrimination based on gender and age. Frequency of positive answers ranged from 67% (feeling comfortable with friends) to 12% (being involved in volunteer work). Sexual minority youth were more likely to feel discriminated based on sexual orientation, age, and gender. Bot...

De la promotion et protection des droits humains dans le contexte du VIH/SIDA: facteur limitant l'extension de l'épidémie? (The Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of HIV/AIDS: a Factor limiting the Growth of the Epidemic?)
(2012)
Mwenedata, Alfred
Abstract:
The HIV/AIDS pandemic has reached historical heights. The number of infected people has been rising constantly and the HIV crisis has been spreading to more and more countries. Testimony to this is the higher number of infected people. Unless wide scale comprehensive preventive, care and treatment measures are taken, the epidemic will claim more and more lives. Its legal, social and economic impacts are numerous in the field of health, in education, agriculture, human resources, etc. The rights of people who are infected are regularly violated. Those who live with the disease are victims of violence and they, consequently, bear the mark of a situation of acute precariousness. From the time the epidemic was discovered, people living with HIV/AIDS, face various levels of stigmatization and hidden discrimination which are tantamount to violence. They have faced exclusion in schools, in the work place and elsewhere. Furthermore, people who are marginalized due to their HIV status eve...

Decomposing gender differences in college student earnings expectations
(2011)
Delaney, Liam; Harmon, Colm; Remond, Cathy
Abstract:
Despite the increasing coverage and prevalence of equality legislation and the general alignment of key determining characteristics such as educational attainment, gender differentials continue to persist in labour market outcomes, including earnings. Recently, evidence has been found supporting the role of typically unobserved non-cognitive factors in explaining these gender differentials. We contribute to this literature by testing whether gender gaps in the earnings expectations of a representative group of Irish university students are explained by simultaneously controlling for gender heterogeneity across a wide array of cognitive and noncognitive factors. Non-cognitive factors were found to play a significant role in explaining the gender gap, however, gender differentials persist even after controlling for an extensive range of cognitive and non-cognitive factors. Nearly three-quarters of the short run and two-thirds of the long run differential could not be explained.

Developing a new framework for human rights in older age: Exploration, interpretation and application
(2020)
Georgantzi, Athina Eleni
Abstract:
While there is growing attention on the rights of older persons and the feasibility of a new treaty, the conceptual basis for a new United Nations (UN) convention has not yet been clearly articulated. This thesis addresses this gap by providing the first empirical study on this issue. The thesis set out to discuss the value of a new UN convention by i) providing a theoretical understanding of older people’s rights ii) discussing how the human rights of older persons should be interpreted in international standards and iii) suggesting how a new Convention should be framed to achieve better normative impact. The study carried out a comparative socio-legal analysis in Ireland, France and Greece and applied an interpretation of the constructivist grounded theory for the analysis of the data. Interviews were conducted with 24 participants involved in various organisations, which are active in advocacy or implementation of older people’s rights in the three selected countries. Discounti...

Discrimination against credentials in Black bodies: counterstories of the characteristic labour market experiences of migrants in Ireland
(2019)
Joseph, Ebun
Abstract:
Black Africans across Europe who report higher levels of discrimination in employment encounter systemic resistance in their career pursuits. In this article, discrimination in the Irish labour market is creatively challenged by centring race, and juxtaposing the experiences of migrants of Black African descent against their White counterparts based on information from 32 semi-structured interviews of first generation migrants from Nigeria, Poland, and Spain. Five characteristic experiences identified by synthesising migrants’ interpretation of their journeys to paid employment are presented. The typologies in these trajectories reveal whiteness as a hidden resource that advantages Whites. It also illustrates the prevalence of an ascription of deficiency to Black workers and their credentials. These findings are presented through composite characters following critical race theory’s counter-storytelling.

Discrimination on the ground of religion or belief in Ireland

Vasquez del Aguila, Ernesto; Cantillon, Sara
Abstract:
This paper focuses on discrimination on the ground of religion or belief in Ireland. It is based on the analysis of academic sources, secondary data including Irish legislation related to religion; reports published by NGOs and governmental organisations; information from the Census 2011; and media reports and coverage. The Census 2011 shows that Ireland remains a country with a predominant majority who identify themselves as Catholics. There have been important social and cultural changes in Ireland over the last decades. Irish Catholics no longer have the same devotion to the Church that their parents had, and there are many important changes taking place in the State, the media, the public sphere and civil society towards religion. This report shows that despite these changes, the influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland and specifically in the area of education is still significant. The Catholic Church owns and runs the vast majority of primary and secondary schools in Irelan...

Equality at work: policies and action: guidelines for employers from the Employment Equality Agency.
(1998)
Employment Equality Agency (EEA)
Abstract:
Considerable progress has been made for men and women in the workplace following the introduction of equal pay and employment equality legislation in the 1970s. This Equal Opportunities Model Policy incorporates the legal principles outlined in the equality legislation and established in individual cases. The guidelines also draw on experience throughout the private and public sectors in combating sex discrimination at work. The purpose of this document is to alert employers to their legal responsibilities and to recommend a pro-active approach in tackling all forms of discrimination that can arise in the workplace.

Abstract:
The new single Equality Duty represents a next step in equality legislation. The existing public sector equality duties for race, disability and gender were pioneering pieces of legislation which placed the public sector at the forefront of tackling discrimination and inequality. Many have seen the benefits the existing duties have delivered, but now is the time to go further. the aim of this bill is to extend the benefits of the equality duties to the other protected characteristics of age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, and religion or belief. The Equality Duty will require public bodies to think about how they can eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations for all the protected groups.
