Houses of the Augustinian Canons in Ireland

Houses of the Augustinian Canons in Ireland
(2007)
Dornan, Antoinette
Abstract:
The Augustinian canons are first documented in Ireland in the twelfth century and in this there is a clear parallel with the colonization in Ireland of the Cistercians. The houses of the canons range from large, wealthy establishments in population centres to small foundations in remote places, far from the haunts of men. This project examines the sites within their contexts, geographical, historical, archaeological, architectural and art historical in order to understand the diversity that defines them at every level. The study also compares the sites with the wider aesthetic and historical contexts of the canons in Britain and further afield.

Metrology and Proportion in the Ecclesiastical Architecture of Medieval Ireland
(2008)
Behan, Avril; Moss, Rachel
Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.
