'Centering' teaching excellence in higher education
(2019)
Lane, Diarmaid
Abstract:
This paper explores the complexity of ‘teaching excellence’ (Kreber, 2002) in contemporary higher education. It describes how a university academic, who has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, questions if they really are an ‘excellent teacher’ and if their student-centered philosophy is sustainable. An analysis of data related to teaching and learning effectiveness over a seven year period highlights a significant weakness in how the academic approached the teaching of undergraduate students. This had a subsequent negative effect on several levels. The paper concludes by describing the merits of academics ‘centering’ themselves between the corporate university and the needs of students in striving for ‘teaching excellence’.

'Dissecting the bird to articulate the song': exploring the nature of teaching and learning poetry in the Irish leaving certificate classroom
(2011)
Hennessy, Jennifer
Abstract:
Motivated by the conviction that listening to pupils’ and teachers’ perspectives enables the researcher to gain a deeper understanding of teaching and learning processes, this research explores the nature and provision of poetry at Leaving Certificate level in Ireland. It draws on research conducted over a four year period from 2007-2011 with 80 practising Leaving Certificate poetry teachers and 200 Leaving Certificate pupils of poetry. Set against a backdrop of educational consumerism, this research identifies a number of areas of concern for educators including; a narrowing of the curricula, a traditionalist approach to pedagogy, widespread teacher dissonance and pupil disengagement in addition to a ubiquitous teaching to the test ideology at Leaving Certificate level. Drawing on the research findings, it is argued that poetry is vulnerable to becoming a marginalised and technicised endeavour in the Leaving Certificate classroom. Recommendations for renewed teacher agency are prop...

A comparative case study investigating the effectiveness of interactive whiteboard’s as motivational teaching and learning tools in the primary school
(2013)
Walsh, Moya
Abstract:
This comparative case study aimed to examine the effects of using Interactive Whiteboards for teaching and learning in primary schools. The research study was two-fold; firstly it set out to examine the effects of using IWB’s as teaching and learning tools as opposed to traditional teaching methods. Secondly, it wanted to determine the motivational effect of the IWB on student learning. Fifteen primary schools throughout North Tipperary participated in the study. Participants of the study consisted of thirty primary school teachers and one hundred and twenty primary school students. In order to establish the effect of using IWB’s as opposed to traditional teaching methods a comparative case study was conducted between two groups of twenty seven students of similar age and learning ability. Seventy five primary school students completed the student survey and thirty primary school teachers responded to an online teacher questionnaire. Other data collected included classroom observati...

A Critical Exploration of the Rhetoric of Equity Belied by Practice in Postgraduate Teacher Education
(2006)
Donnelly, Roisin
Abstract:
This paper presents the initial results of an investigation into the current awareness and perceptions of equity issues amongst academic staff working on a postgraduate learning and teaching course for teachers in tertiary education in the Republic of Ireland. The study is set in the contemporary landscape of discourses around equality, egalitarianism and equity in education generally. The Irish White Paper on Adult Education Learning for Life (2000) recommends that adult education should be underpinned by three core principles, one of which is to promote equality of access, participation and outcome for participants in adult education, with pro-active strategies to counteract barriers arising from differences of socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity and disability. However, there is no detailing of specific research conducted on equality issues on Postgraduate Certificate Courses for teachers in tertiary level education and how staff working on such courses conceptualise their o...

A Pedagogy of Process: Using Arts Based Research With Community Development Co-Researchers to Explore Campus Community Dialogue
(2009)
Hand, Brian
Abstract:
This thesis will outline how I employed an arts informed participatory research process with four women members of the Southend family resource centre in Wexford town. The primary context for this research was the introduction of a module in community based learning on the BA (hons) in Art at the Wexford Campus of I.T. Carlow combined with a desire to participate more actively in the community sector outside the campus. The choice of an arts based methodology was to capture knowledge in a multifaceted way, to give depth to the many meanings of individual experiences and finally to suggest a living form of enquiry. In chapter 2, I survey what I see as the primary theoretical foundations of literature on arts based research and build a conceptual bridge between critical pedagogy, dialogical aesthetics and post-structuralist hermeneutics. Chapter 3 looks in detail at recent scholarship related to arts based research as a tool for educational research. A focus for this study has been to...

A Phenomenographic Study of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches to their Learning and Perceptions of their Learning Environment in a Physics Problem-Based Learning Environment
(2010)
Irving, Paul
Abstract:
This phenomenographic study describes students’ approaches to learning and their perceptions of the learning environment in an introductory physics course which is taught using a problem-based learning approach. This research builds on previous studies which showed that these students develop a greater conceptual knowledge than their counterparts in a more traditional learning environment while others showed very little development even though they engaged fully with the pedagogy. This study aimed to examine and describe the students’ approaches to learning. The definitions of surface, strategic and deep approaches to learning are not appropriate in this context and could not be applied as all students engage fully in the collaborative problem-solving process, albeit in different ways, and hence displayed none of the characteristics of the traditional surface approach and many, if not all, of those associated with the deep approach. Many previous research studies have shown that the...

A Rough Look at the Shifting Effects on Learning Through Student Work Placement
(2012)
Cullen, Frank
Abstract:
The use of internship as a means of informal education is relatively commonplace. This is evident by the vast amount of literature dedicated to workplace learning, however very little research to date has explored the impact of international culinary internships on students. This paper addresses the void in research by exploring the nuances associated with culinary internships and in particular investigates the 2006 and 2007 student cohorts studying in the Dublin Institute of Technology for the degree award of BA in Culinary Arts. The paper examines the internship preparation and experiences examining the impact of internship on the student’s attitudes towards learning. A picture for this research is build by providing background information on the Department of Culinary Arts and its development over the last decade.

Against didacticism
(2013)
Hogan, Michael J.
Abstract:
Journal article
Quality thinking and quality teaching are desirable but difficult to achieve. Although lectures are necessary to teach information, one cannot rely on them to promote critical and constructive thinking skills. Nevertheless, didacticism remains the dominant teaching strategy in secondary education and in university, perhaps because it is viewed as the most efficient way of imparting large quantities of information. In this comment, research and theory in psychology are used to argue the case that the development of critical and constructive thinking skills necessarily involves the cultivation of dialectic, flexible attitudes toward thinking and teaching in context.

Background: A comprehensive international literature review on alternative assessment in physical education has been provided by López-Pastor et al. ([2013]. “Alternative Assessment in Physical Education: A Review of International Literature.” Sport, Education & Society 18 (1): 57–76). The authors remarked that while more authentic forms of assessment in physical education have been evidenced over the last three decades, the extent to which alternative assessment practices have become common practice in the teaching of physical education is yet to be established. Purpose: This review provides an updated perspective on the prevalence of assessment for learning (AfL) principles in physical education discourse since the 2013 publication. The intent is to inform and consider future AfL practices in school physical education and physical education teacher education (PETE) prog...

An Evaluation of Gamification to Assess Students’ Learning on Their Understanding of First Year Computer Science Programming Module
(2016)
Gebremichael, Daniel
Abstract:
This research examines the use of gamification to develop an assessment tool, to assess students’ learning of a first year computer science module. The students’ undertaking of the first semester Programming and Algorithms module in 2015 were assessed on their knowledge of the programming language Python. The incorporation of gamification when assessing students can have various potential benefits. The research aims to identify these benefits and issues. Assessments and games have almost opposite effects on opinions on people, as games are usually expected to have an entertainment value but this is not the case for assessments. The research examines if the game elements in the assessment tool causes the students to see this tool differently. A variety of experiments were carried out and the organisation of these experiments were vital to the success of the project. The first assessment was to test students through a written test. The findings of this experiment were used in order to...

An exploration of the adaptation of the dimensions of learning framework to promote thinking skills in a 21st century adult learning environment through the development of digital media narrative. A case study
(2013)
Purcell, Vivienne
Abstract:
The worlds of education and learning in the 21st century are being shaped by rapidly changing environments of digital medias and new technologies which require new learning and communication skills. The aim of this exploratory and descriptive study is to examine and foster the 21st century thinking skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity (4Cs) through the creation of digital narrative against the backdrop of the Dimensions of Learning framework. Based on research into the cognitive process, the framework proposes that five dimensions of “thinking” (learning) are inherent in the learning process and should be considered in curriculum design, teaching and assessment: Dimension 1: Positive attitudes and perceptions about learning. Dimension 2: Thinking used to acquire and integrate knowledge. Dimension 3: Thinking used to extend and refine knowledge. Dimension 4: Thinking involved in using knowledge meaningfully. Dimension 5: Productive habits...

An exploratory study of the impact of the involvement of teachers of SPHE, CSPE and PE in the new Wellbeing Programme at Junior Cycle. A teaching perspective
(2018)
Ryan, Sinead
Abstract:
The junior cycle Wellbeing programme was introduced in post-primary schools in September 2017. The Wellbeing programme combines the subjects of CSPE, SPHE and PE. Guidance Education has also been identified as an area of learning to be included in Wellbeing. Students will engage in 300 hours of wellbeing and this is to increase to 400 hours by 2020. This new area of learning will provide students with an opportunity to enhance their physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing (NCCA, 2017 p.8). The teachers of SPHE, CSPE and PE are now responsible for this new area for learning. The primary aim of the research is to explore the experiences and perceptions of teachers involved in implementing Wellbeing and consequently illuminate the potential this new arrangement has on the opportunities provided to students to enhance their wellbeing. This research was carried out with six participants, all of whom are involved in Wellbeing implementation. The research was carried out using sem...

Associative Enhancement of Time Correlated Response to Heterogeneous Stimuli in a Neuromorphic Nanowire Device
(2016)
Boland, John; Donegan, John
Abstract:
In spite of the strong interest in brain?like or neuromorphic computation, relatively few devices have emerged whose neuromorphic behavior is embedded in the hardware itself and not reliant on external programming of synaptic weights. Here, a neuromorphic device is described based on a TiO2 nanowire that exhibits an associative memory response to the time correlation between voltage and optical stimuli. Memristive characteristics are also observed with current?voltage sweeps showing hysteresis loops and continuum resistance levels. The nanowire device responds to heterogeneous voltage and optical pulse stimuli with spike?like neuromorphic outputs. Moreover, uncorrelated pulses produce a weak response, consistent with the interaction of coincident pulses with adsorbed and bulk oxygen in the surface depletion region, leading to a nonlinear enhancement in conductance. The strength of this learned enhancement depends on both the time correlation and the number of pulse stimuli, consiste...

Behavioral and cognitive factors that affect the success of scent detection dogs
(2019)
Troisi, Camille A.; Mills, Daniel S.; Wilkinson, Anna; Zulch, Helen E.
Abstract:
Scent detection dogs are used in a variety of contexts; however, very few dogs successfully complete their training, and many others are withdrawn from service prematurely due to both detection accuracy issues in the field and wider behavioral issues. This article aims to review our understanding of the factors affecting variation in scent detection dogs’ learning of the tasks and performance in the field. For this we deconstructed the scent detection task into its key behavioral elements and examined the literature relating to the factors affecting variation in the dogs’ success all across their development. We first consider factors that affect individuality and individual performance, in general, such as temperament, arousal, the handler–dog relationship, training regimes, and the housing and management of scent detections dogs. We then focus on tasks specific to scent detection dogs and critically appraise relevant literature relating to the learning and performance of these tas...

Blended Learning in Higher Education: Theory and Praxis

Abstract:
Recent studies are showing that ‘blended learning’ is more than a mix between face-to-face and online education, or in other words: a mix of traditional and computer-based education. Blended learning seems to include mixtures between eLearning and other ways of learning, where the right choices have to be made in the distribution of learning content, didactical approaches, ways of communicating and characteristics of learning environments, in the perspective of the type of learning process and characteristics of students. This symposium provides evidence from qualitative studies of blended learning in practical situations, drawing on tutors’ and students’ perspectives, contrasted with theoretical ideas. Attention is focused on assessment in blended learning environments and the use of ePortfolios to align learning, teaching and assessment when new educational approaches are implemented. Also, research on the roles and effectiveness of the eTutor in blended learning will be presented...
