"Openness" with and without Information Technology: a framework and a brief history
(2017)
Schlagwein, Daniel; Conboy, Kieran; Feller, Joseph; Leimeister, Jan Marco; Morgan, Lorraine
Abstract:
Over the past two decades, openness (e.g. ‘open’ innovation, ‘open’ education and ‘open’ strategy) has been of increasing interest for researchers and of increasing relevance to practitioners. Openness is often deeply embedded in information technology (IT) and can be both a driver for and a result of innovative IT. To clarify the concept of “openness”, we provide an overview of the scope of cross-disciplinary research on openness. Based on this overview, we develop a framework of openness, which proposes a higher-order concept of “openness” characterised by transparency, access, participation and democracy. The framework further distinguishes open resources, open processes and the effects of opening on particular domains. To provide the historical context and to appreciate the role of IT in openness, we discuss two historical examples of openness: the introduction of an open science model in academia (openness without IT) and the emergence of open source software development (openn...

“Openness through Sound”: Dualcasting on Irish LGBT Radio
(2018)
Kerrigan, Páraic; O'Brien, Anne
Abstract:
This article explores how Ireland’s first LGBT radio station, Open FM, attempted to offer LGBT radio in a heteronormative media landscape. It uses semi-structured interviews with two of the stations founders as well as posts from online LGBT message bulletin boards to argue how Open FM ultimately became ambivalent about its LGBT status and adopted a dualcasting strategy. Despite its ambitions to be a community-led radio station for Ireland's LGBT community, the dualcasting strategy of the station framed many of its endeavors between the mainstream standards of radio broadcasting and the community of interest that their licence claimed to serve.

Empathy, Vulnerability and Anxiety
(2020)
Stout, Rowland
Abstract:
A concept of empathy as openness to the emotional perspective of another is developed in opposition to a concept of sympathy as agreement with the emotional perspective of another. Empathy involves knowledge of how things are emotionally for the other person, which is not the same thing as knowledge of the other person’s emotions. Being open to another perspective requires the capacity to hold two perspectives in mind simultaneously–one that is one’s own perspective and at the same time the adopted perspective. This is why empathy can be so challenging for someone suffering from some kinds of anxiety.

Openness, the Phillips Curve and the cost of relinquishing the currency

Openness, the Phillips Curve and the cost of relinquishing the currency
(2009)
Barry, Frank
Abstract:
For a given degree of wage stickiness, there is an inverse relationship between the price-level and employment effects of a nominal shock. Various contributors to the literature on optimal currency areas have extrapolated from this to argue that the real effects of exchange rate changes are smaller for more open economies, reducing the effectiveness of the exchange rate as a macroeconomic instrument. This would imply that more open economies face steeper Phillips curve trade-offs. This proposition has been challenged empirically however. This paper employs standard small-open-economy models to analyse these issues. The propositions are shown to be correct when the non-traded sector is monopolistically competitive. Whether they are true or false under competitive conditions depends on a simple condition that may or may not be satisfied in practice.

The VLE versus open education
(2018)
Risquez, Angelica; McAvinia, Claire
Abstract:
In this paper we consider the position of the VLE in the context of the open education movement. This paper gathers data from the #VLEIreland survey in order to explore further whether open education was a concern of the academics involved, and if so, how it shaped their use of the local VLE. We will explore the nature of open education and open educational resources (OER), and whether there are interactions between these resources and the VLE. Open educational resources are materials shared online for educators to use and adapt, including full courses, modules, textbooks, and assets such as video clips, images or teaching methods. Data from our staff survey indicates a range of responses to the sharing and use of OERs and a spectrum of understanding (or lack of understanding) of copyright issues. We explore these findings and discuss their implications for OER in the future, and suggest that the ideals of “openness” are challenged by institutional VLEs and other mechanisms for reso...
