"The Given Note": traditional music and modern Irish poetry
(2016)
Crosson, Seán
Abstract:
"The oldest records indicate that the performance of poetry in Gaelic Ireland was normally accompanied by music, providing a point of continuity with past tradition while bolstering a sense of community in the present. Music would also offer, particularly for poets writing in English from the eighteenth century onwards, a perceived authenticity, a connection with an older tradition perceived as being untarnished by linguistic and cultural division. While providing an innovative analysis of theoretical work in music and literary studies, this book examines how traditional Irish music, including the related song tradition (primarily in Irish), has influenced, and is apparent in, the work of Irish poets. While looking generally at where this influence is evident historically and in contemporary Irish poetry, this work focuses primarily on the work of six poets, three who write in English and three who write primarily in the Irish language: Thomas Kinsella, Seamus Heaney, Ciaran ...

“He was a friend of the greatest geniuses of his time – indeed, he was one of them” – Ludwig Hopf (1884-1939)
(2015)
Holfter, Gisela
Abstract:
This article concentrates on the life and work of Ludwig Hopf, including the effects the Nazi regime had on him and his time in Dublin where he arrived in July 1939 as a “Refugee of distinction”, some five months before his death, in order to teach at Trinity College Dublin. Born in 1884 in Nuremberg he studied Mathematics and Physics at Berlin, Munich and Zurich. For his PhD he was supervised by Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich. Later he worked in Zurich and Prague as Albert Einstein’s assistant before moving to Aachen where in 1923 he became professor for mathematics at the Technical University. Suspended in 1933 and pensioned off in 1934 he tried to support the emigration of his four sons and searched for a long time in vain to find a new academic home for himself before he could emigrate in spring 1939 to England where the invitation from Ireland reached him.

A Community of the Imagination: Seóirse Bodley’s Goethe Settings (Acknowledgements, Biographies, Editorial Note and Introduction: Crossing Thresholds)
(2013)
Abstract:
An analysis of Seóirse Bodley's musical settings of Goethe's poetry. The book explores very different but radical musics that can be traced back to Bodley’s Darmstadt period. Mignon and the Harper belongs to the avant-garde, the experimental, with all the challenges to which this has given rise. The more recent song cycle, Gretchen, is a fine example of how Bodley’s style continues to change and go into unexpected and unseen places. And yet while it is difficult to imagine two more contrasting pieces from the one composer, there is a convergence in the need to create a unique context of meaning through the act of composing. Just as Byrne Bodley's reading of these heterogeneous works as both object and process emphasizes the idea of historical transmission of materials as a living tradition, these settings compel us to experience again the relationship of modernity to tradition in both poetry and the music it has here inspired.

A Practitioner’s Guide to Enquiry and Problem-based Learning: Case Studies from University College Dublin
(2020)
Abstract:
This guide is part of the Enquiry and Problem-based Learning Project funded by the Strategic Innovation Fund of the Higher Education Authority Ireland. Dr Geraldine O’Neill and Dr Terry Barrett from UCD Teaching and Learning were joint coordinators of the project. Project partners were: Probell (The Finnish PBL Network) and the Centre for Excellence in Enquiry-based learning in the University of Manchester. We are very grateful for their contributions to the quality of the project outcomes. This guide contains some case studies from participants of the project and two case studies which were implemented before the project commenced.. We appreciate the contributions from authors of the case studies. These will be inspiring and useful to other enquiry and problem-based learning practitioners. We also thank Áine Galvin for proofreading the text.

A story to every dance: the role of lore in enhancing the Scottish solo dance tradition
(2018)
Melin, Mats H.
Abstract:
While growing up, I occasionally learnt some Highland dances through my local Scottish Country Dance class in Stockholm, Sweden. I later deciphered solo dances through various textbooks, a process that taught me much about the shortcomings of written manuals as sources as compared to being taught in person. Along the way I encountered some of the stories associated with the most well-known Highland dances. At the time, I did not pay much attention as to whether there was any truth to them or not; I merely thought of them as stories being part of Scottish folklore. I started looking into this topic back in the early 1990s but writing seriously about it was put on hold until now. So, with my ethnochoreologist’s hat on, and having spent close to 25 years in Scotland and Ireland combined, working as a dance teacher, performer, choreographer, lecturer, and researcher, I finally, in 2014, decided to pursue charting these stories and asking what meaning-making function they may have had an...
