Abstract:
Unsuccessful domestic attempts to raise the profile of science and technology in Irish policy debate can be traced back to the end of the 1940s. By the late 1950s a combination of Soviet space race achievement and Irish development strategy shift had created a more receptive environment internationally and nationally. Interaction with the Office for Scientific and Technical Personnel (OSTP) of the Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) ended the isolation of the Irish Department of Education and the Second Programme for Economic Expansion did what OEEC experts had been urging Irish policymakers to do by integrating education into economic planning. Both in the education field and that of science and technology the bridge between a general commitment to planning and a concrete programme of action was supplied by research studies. These studies were initiated in the early 1960s by the successor body to OEEC, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OEC...

?Drawing Illusions? ? a case study in the incorrectness of diagrammatic reasoning
(1999)

Abstract:
TCD-CS-1999-17
In ?Something to Reckon With? [6], a system for diagramming syllogistic inferences using straight line segments is presented (see also Englebretsen [5]). In the light of recent research on the representational power of diagrammatic representation systems (Lemon and Pratt [12, 13]) we point out some problems with the proposal, and indeed, with any proposal for representing logically possible situations diagrammatically. We shall first outline the proposed linear diagrammatic system of Englebretsen [5], and then show by means of counterexamples that it is inadequate as a representation scheme for general logical inferences (the task for which the system is intended). We also show that modifications to the system fail to remedy the problems. The considerations we present are not limited to the particular proposals of Englebretsen [5, 6]; we thus draw a more general moral about the use of spatial relations in representation systems.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this project was to comprehensively evaluate the pilot of the 'Choose Safety' module developed by the H.S.A. The module is a teaching and learning pack for post-primary students. The main objectives of the study were to: provide a profile of the types of employment students in the roll-out area schools were engaged in and estimate length of working hours, to assess the impact of the programme upon the students¿ knowledge of health and safety informaiton and upon their safety beliefs and behaviour, to assess the ¿Choose Safety¿ module process i.e. the perceived usefulness of the structure and appropriateness of the content of the module material, etc. from the students, teachers and coordinators involved in the pilot, and finally, to assess the operational aspects of the programme i.e. the methodology employed to recruit schools and teachers and the delivery of the packs and support provided to the teachers.

'Health for our future': annual report of the Western Health Board for the year ended 31st December 1996.

Western Health Board (WHB)
Abstract:
Planning for new and improved services has been a special feature of this Board's work since our establishment, our first five year plan being launched in 1973. The targets set out then have since been updated many times, and despite the swings in the economic fortunes of our country, and thanks to the support of the various Ministers and Officers of the Department of Health over the years, much progress has been achieved. Health and social gain coupled with equity is now uppermost in everybody's mind and in addition value for money and measurement of outcome, all based against the criteria laid down in our Service Plans. ensure that our management and staff avail of every opportunity possible to provide the highest level of service for the patients and persons we have the honour to serve. Abstract:
Background: Research indicates that most older people would prefer to live in their own homes and have support services provided to enable them to do so for as long as possible (Barry, 2010). However, there is an evident tension between this objective and the promotion of 'ageing in place', with the consequent heavy reliance on the Nursing Home Support Scheme (NHSS) in the Irish context (Donnelly and O¿Loughlin, 2015). This study set out to explore the perspectives and experiences of social workers in Republic of Ireland working with older people to identify issues/barriers in accessing community supports and to examine older people's involvement in decision-making, including those with a cognitive impairment/dementia. Methods: A mixed methods study design was adapted and the study consisted of two phases: Phase 1 consisted of an on-line survey of social workers using Survey Monkey. Phase 2 consisted of in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews with at least two s...

'Let's talk about': palliative care survey report
(2016)
All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care
Abstract:
During the two phases of data collection during 2014 and 2015, a total of 528 people completed the Let’s Talk About survey. Of these, 419 surveys came from the Republic of Ireland, and 109 surveys came from Northern Ireland. Surveys were completed from all 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland and six counties in Northern Ireland. Respondents were asked to identify the primary long-term condition(s) of the individuals who had the experience of palliative care. Cancer was the most frequently experienced condition equating to almost half of all conditions identified. Neurological disorders including Dementia and Parkinson’s disease were the next biggest grouping. Taken collectively, it has been possible to identify two discreet groupings, people who had cancer and people who did not, which provided the opportunity for further analysis (See Section 4). The main analysis of the survey is detailed in Section 3 of the report, presenting the results from the eight triangle questions showi...

'Runsort' - An Adaptive Mergesort for Prolog
(2005)
BRADY, MICHAEL HAYES
Abstract:
This note describes a novel list-sorting method for Prolog which is stable, has O(n log n) worst-case behaviour and O(n) best-case behaviour. The algorithm is an adaptive variant of bottom-up mergesort using so-called long runs of preexisting order to improve efficiency; accordingly we have called it `runsort?. Runsort compares favourably with samsort, and a modification to samsort is suggested.

Abstract:
The four National University of Ireland Universities have offered a diploma in rural development to adults experienced in, or concerned about rural development since 1996. The diploma initiative arose from a government report on the needs for education and training for the development of rural areas. The universities acted upon the Creedon Report (1993) and offered a 60 credit two-year distance learning diploma in 11 separate themed modules. Over 400 people have completed this diploma since 1996 and have gone on to impact on their local communities, develop careers, develop enterprises, and impact on rural development policy. By 2004 the universities were able to launch a follow on degree. This degree completed by distance learning in two years, (following the diploma), has graduated almost 80 people in the last four years. This paper draws on research completed by two graduates of this degree. These graduates, with support from a summer research programme within NUI Maynooth, soug...

Robins, Leanne; Rylands, Jennifer
Abstract:
This study explores the context, characteristics and experiences of 23 unaccompanied minor mothers (UMM) during 2003. The aim of the study was to inform both service design and service development for this population. The study was designed as a partnership between the East Coast Area Health Board, Social Work Team for Separated Children Seeking Asylum (SWSCSA, ECAHB); the Psychology Service for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Northern Area Health Board (PSRAS, NAHB), and the client group. Ethical approval was sought and obtained from both the ECAHB and the NAHB. A number of key agencies and individuals were consulted in the development of aspects of the research.

"A vision for change": report of the Expert Group on Mental Health Policy

Department of Health and Children (DOHC)
Abstract:
DOHC / 2006
A Vision for Change details a comprehensive model of mental health service provision for Ireland. It describes a framework for building and fostering positive mental health across the entire community and for providing accessible, community-based, specialist services for people with mental illness. An expert group, which combined the expertise of different professional disciplines, health service managers, researchers, representatives of voluntary organisations, and service user groups developed this policy. A broad consultation process was undertaken between the expert group and service users and providers, through invited formal submissions and through public meetings. The results of this consultation process were published in 2006 and critically informed the policy described in this document.
