Youth cafe toolkit how to set up and run a youth cafe in Ireland
(2010)
Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs
Abstract:
Well, in Paris they have the Eiffel Tower, in New York they have the Statue of Liberty and in London they have Big Ben … but Waterford has something that none of these cities have – Waterford has a Squashy Couch (that’s our youth café!). This toolkit has been developed to help guide YOU in starting up YOUR OWN youth café. So, we were thinking about why we go to Squashy Couch and why would anyone go to a youth café. First of all, it’s a break between school and home, and to be honest it’s a break from school and home. It’s safe and healthy, a secure environment where you get to meet people from other schools. You can pan out and relax, watch telly, do whatever, it’s friendly so you don’t have to worry. Then it’s a place where you’re not judged, there’s nobody looking at you and saying stuff about ‘the youth today’, and the staff look after you, you don’t get shunned or anything. You can have a proper conversation with the staff and they’ll help you if you want information about anyth...

Youth cafes in Ireland: a best practice guide
(2010)
Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs
Abstract:
The focus of the research in this report is on one such innovative response to the changing context of youth development in Ireland – the youth café. Developed initially at regional policy level, the idea has been taken up by a range of groups, statutory and voluntary. Most recently, the approach has been accorded a specific status within the National Recreation Policy for Young People (OMCYA, 2007a). Youth cafés are one mechanism through which young people are engaged and supported in their communities. Therefore, as suggested by a number of agencies interviewed for this report, youth cafés should not be seen by Government as the only way to support youth activities in Ireland, but rather as one of a number of options for young people to hang out with friends, get involved in local activities and access information. A crucial point is that a youth-based initiative such as the youth café depends on solid interagency work. When functioning effectively, this work enables young people ...

Youth Homelessness Strategy
(2001)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
This Strategy aims to build on this work and to ensure a more co-ordinated and planned approach to tackling youth homelessness. Particular emphasis is placed on prevention and on the importance of supporting schools, communities, the young people themselves and their families in this context. Where a young person becomes homeless the Strategy stresses the need for a prompt child focused service which will address the individual needs of the young person. Download the Report here

Youth Media Democracy: Perceptions of New Literacies
(2009)
Pettersen, Jan
Abstract:
<p>The conference ‘Youth Media Democracy’ was a two day event held in April of 2008. It set out to explore the effects that new media have on the younger generation with a focus on the tremendous opportunities that new media brings. The event had the ambitious aim to offer an integrated experience of a traditional academic conference, presenting recent research on topics like; new media; emerging literacies; the digital divide; new media as a platform for democracy in the lives of young people, and at the same time also engaging the participation of Youth through a series of workshops across different media platforms. This publication aims to present the ‘essence’ or ‘spirit’ of the conference and therefore, it is important to point out that it is not an exact representation of the proceedings as it unfolded. Due to the rather unconventional format of the event a mixture of reports, narratives and academic papers have been included. The chapters in the report inc...

Youth work: a systematic map of the research literature
(2013)
Dickson, Kelly; Vigurs, Carol-Ann; Newman, Mark
Abstract:
In 2011, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs commenced preparation for the development of a youth policy framework to accommodate identified areas and issues pertinent to young people within the 10-24 age range that fall within, and which are related to, the remit of the Department. To support the development of the Youth Policy Framework, the Centre for Effective Services commissioned the Institute of Education (IoE), University of London, to complete an international literature review to identify optimum outcomes for young people in the areas of youth work. The starting point was to recognise the lack of research relating specifically to youth work and outcomes, and the need to know about leading thinking and emerging trends in this area of work. In particular, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs was keen to understand how such work could contribute to positive outcomes for young people, in what ways these outcomes might converge and in what ways they differ, and...

Zeta-Dimension
(2005)
Doty, David; Gu, Xiaoyang; Lutz, Jack H.; Mayordomo, Elvira; Moser, Philippe
Abstract:
The zeta-dimension of a set A of positive integers is the infimum s such that the sum of the reciprocals of the s-th powers of the elements of A is finite. Zeta-dimension serves as a fractal dimension on the positive integers that extends naturally usefully to discrete lattices such as the set of all integer lattice points in d-dimensional space. This paper reviews the origins of zeta-dimension (which date to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) and develops its basic theory, with particular attention to its relationship with algorithmic information theory. New results presented include extended connections between zeta-dimension and classical fractal dimensions, a gale characterization of zeta-dimension, and a theorem on the zeta-dimensions of pointwise sums and products of sets of positive integers.
