"It's our home": the quality of life in private and voluntary nursing homes.
(1986)
O'Connor, Joyce; Walsh, Marie
Abstract:
Coping with a Resident who Wants to go Home Discontentment among residents is seen as one of the most difficult situations facing a staff member. Essentially, they bear the brunt of the resident's discontent in a situation which is not of their making. Some homes deal with this problem by not accepting on a long-term basis, any resident who does not wish to stay. For this reason, in some homes, residents are accepted initially on a trial basis, and if this does not work to the satisfaction of both parties, then the resident is not accepted on a permanent basis. Some staff say that the residents are free to leave if the family are willing to take them. This is the nub of the problem as far as the staff are concerned. They must find a way of dealing with the resident who wants to go home, when their relatives are unable or unwilling to have him or her at home.

Abstract:
n/a
In October 2014 the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, in association with the NGO Working Party on Hate Crime, commissioned the Hate and Hostility Research Group at the University of Limerick to investigate the case for the introduction of hate crime legislation in Ireland. This Report represents the preliminary findings of this research. It addresses the treatment of the hate element of crimes under existing law, the suitability of various options for legislative reform to the Irish criminal justice system and presents proposals for legislative reform.

Health Service Executive (HSE); Patient Safety First
Abstract:
The Model of Care for Adult Critical Care aligns with the many Department of Health, Health Service Executive (HSE) and Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) reform and regulatory initiatives, with the objective of strengthening the acute healthcare system’s capability to meet the needs of critically ill adult patients. This model of care is the result of collaboration with the representative professional bodies in Ireland; the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of Ireland; the Intensive Care Society of Ireland; the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing & Midwifery; the Office of Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, Divisions within the Health Service Executive; representatives from Health and Social Care Professionals including pharmacists and service user consultation.

"Through the Looking Glass; Understanding Consumer Inaction in Retail Financial Services"
(2014)
Rooney, Tara; Lawlor, Katrina; Rohan, Eddie
Abstract:

Understanding why consumers choose to remain in relationships which they find less than satisfactory is a key concern for relationship marketing theory. In this paper we explore the alternative choices available to consumers after exit has been considered and then declined. Applying a narrative methodology within a social constructionist framework, the paper presents a theory of Relationship Neutrality. We go through the looking glass, into to a world of relationship contradictions and irrationality to consider long term relationship engagement which is different from the one theory has grown accustomed to.

"Travelling with austerity": impacts of cuts on Travellers, Traveller projects and services
(2013)
Harvey, Brian
Abstract:
Executive summary and key challenges: This report follows the evolution of community development work with the Traveller community from the 1980s to the present day; examines the effect of austerity on the Traveller community in general and the community development work therein specifically; and looks at how community development work with Travellers may best be developed in the future. Four pen portraits of Traveller advocates are included. The period from the breaking of the economic and social crisis in 2008 has seen a dramatic disinvestment by the state in the Traveller community. Using the government’s own figures, it is possible to identify the scale of the austerity cuts, as follows, but they should be compared to the overall reduction in government current spending of - 4.3% over 2008 -2013, the baseline.

"We have no beds":an enquiry into the availability and use of acute psychiatric beds in the Eastern Health Board region.
(1999)
Keogh, Fiona; Roche, Anne; Walsh, Dermot
Abstract:
The results of the study revealed that there were 558 acute adult psychiatric beds in use at the time of the census. True bed occupancy was 98%, with seven of the eleven hospitals and units reporting occupancy rates of 100% or more. A striking finding was that close to half (45%) of census patients were judged not to require the acute bed they were occupying. While the admission of these patients may have been appropriate, their occupancy of an acute bed at the time of the census was judged to be inappropriate. lt was estimated that approximately 91,500 inappropriate bed days in a year resulted from this inappropriate occupancy. Information was collected on 545 'census' patients, just over half of whom were male (54%), mostly single (64%), 51 % living with family and almost half (48%) with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Length of stay was also considerable, with one fifth staying in an acute bed for a year or more. This accumulation of patients in acute beds was largely due...

"Winning ways" sharing strategies for high performing hygiene services
(2009)
Health Service Executive (HSE) National Hospitals Office
Abstract:
Cleanliness counts Ensuring a clean environment is fundamental to the provision of safe and high quality care. The hospital environment is one of the first things which patients and their families experience when they seek care and ensuring this is clean gets the first impression right. Importantly, some aspects of hygiene services support the prevention and control of healthcare infection. Healthcare infection is a concern for those receive and provide care alike and, while recent downwards trends in MRSA-related bloodstream infection are encouraging, there is no room for complacency. Lessons learned Two key lessons emerged from HIQA’s hygiene service reviews in 2007 and 2008. Firstly, hospitals operated or funded by the HSE are making improvement; fundamentals are in place with services on the ground performing well and hospitals are now developing the corporate management to sustain performance and ensure continuous improvement. Secondly, however, against a background of overall ...

“Six week baby check in general practice" project / prepared by Lynne McBride and Christine McMaster
(2006)
McBride, Lynne; McMaster, Christine
Abstract:
The check that babies are offered at 6 weeks of age is a key part of an evidence based child health surveillance and screening service, and is a routine part of the work of most General Practitioners. However, up until now there has been little opportunity to look at the quality of this service. This project represents a very important and innovative approach to improving the quality of services provided to parents and children. It demonstrates how primary care plays a central part in child health surveillance and shows how evidence may be translated into practice and result in greater satisfaction for parents and better outcomes for children. It also shows how improvements can be made in services that, although ‘low tech’ and routine, have real potential in terms of not only detecting problems at an early stage but also providing opportunities for promoting health.

(m, p)-isometric and (m,∞)-isometric operator tuples on normed spaces
(2013)
Hoffmann, Philipp H.W.; Mackey, Michael
Abstract:
We generalize the notion of m-isometric operator tuples on Hilbert spaces in a natural way to operator tuples on normed spaces. This is done by defining a tuple analogue of (m, p)-isometric operators, so-called (m, p)-isometric operator tuples. We then extend this definition further by introducing (m,1)-isometric operator tuples and study properties of and relations between these objects.
