'Ancora Imparo' (Still I am Learning): An Inquiry into Visual Artists' Experience of Creativity in Old Age
(2007)
Mac Eoin, Ailbhe
Abstract:
As a student of Irish Modern and Contemporary Art History, my contribution to The Lived Life project explores the topic of later-life artistic creativity amongst older visual artists. In their capacity as self-employed practioners artists are not obliged to retire at the age of 65, and as they must age like everyone else, it is likely that with the passing of time their vision and interpretatio of art might change also. An artist's skill and technical proficiency may develop throughout his or her lifetime, and although ageing may sometimes affect this proficiency in a negative sense, the experience of ageing can enrich an artist's life experience, which can then be reflected in his work. The progression of one's life is reflected in one's artistic developments.

'Captain Grey and the Greedy Aliens’: Obtaining normative data on a new narrative assessment for the production of verbs at sentence level in children.
(2014)
Flynn, Deirdre
Abstract:
Background: Children with language impairment frequently present with verb knowledge difficulties and incorrect use of verbs and their associated structures. However standardized assessment tools for children contain very few verb-specific subtests. A story retell tool was designed to assess a range of semantic-syntactic verb classes and their associated argument structures. Aims: The study aimed to gather normative data from n=91 Typically Developing (TD) Children aged between 4;06-12;0 years on their verb production and related structures and complexity of sentences used, on the newly developed story retell tool. It aimed to assess the sensitivity of the tool across the age range. This data was also compared to comprehension scores on the Test of Verb Knowledge (Murphy, 2011b) to determine the relationship between verb knowledge and correct verb production and sentence complexity. Methods and Procedures: Children were told the ‘Captain Grey and the Greedy Aliens’ narrative and the...

Abstract:
At the onset of a mild Victorian winter, four enthusiastic, fresh faced Irish general practice registrars made their way to Australia on an academic and cultural exchange. As registrars in the final throws of our fourth year general practice training in Donegal, we swapped the rugged, windswept northwest coast of Ireland for Gippsland in Victoria.

'Out of Step' Michael Kane, Modernism and Irish Art History
(2016)
Kennedy, Roisin Askale
Abstract:
As a leading member of the Independent artists and a founder of the Project Arts Centre, Michael Kane has made an immense contribution to Irish art. Along with John Kelly, James McKenna, John Behan, and Charlie Cullen, he formed Group 65 in the mid 1960s. It came to dominate the Independent artists, the exhibition society, founded in 1960, as an alternative to the RHA and the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Declaring themselves to be ‘the nucleus of a new school of painting in Ireland’, they saw their work as representative of an important aspect of Irish art practice, one that was neither academic nor one that slavishly followed international trends.

'Tickling the Palate' Gastronomy in Irish Literature and Culture
(2014)
Mac Con Iomaire, Máirtín; Maher, Eamon
Abstract:

This volume of essays which originated in the inaugural Dublin Gastronomy Symposium held in the Dublin Institute of Technology in June 2012, offers fascinating insights into the significant role played by gastronomy in Irish literature and culture.

The book opens with an exploration of food in literature, covering figures as varied as Maria Edgeworth, James Joyce, Charles Dickens, Enid Blyton, John McGahern, and Sebastian Barry. Other chapters examine culinary practices among the Dublin working classes in the 1950's, offering a stark contrast to the haute cuisine served in the iconic Jammet's Restaurant; new trends among Ireland's 'foodie' generation; and the economic and tourism possibilities created by the development of a gastronomic nationalism. The volume concludes by looking at the sacramental aspects of the production and consumption of Guinness and examining the place where it is most often consumed: the Irish pub.

‘Captain Grey and the Greedy Aliens’: Obtaining normative on a new test for the production of verbs at sentence level in children
(2014)
Rhatigan, NIcola
Abstract:
Background - Verbs are known to be central to sentence production (Levelt 1989). Children with SLI (CwSLI) have been found to have significant difficulty with both verb knowledge and the production of sentences around verbs (Hansson and Bruce 2002). Current clinically available assessments fail to elicit a range of verb types and verb argument structures with varying degree and complexity. The story retell ‘Captain Grey and the Greedy aliens’ provides an opportunity for an efficient and valid measure of children’s verb production abilities to be gathered which are more representative of their underlying language abilities than the de-contextualized assessments currently available. Objectives- The aim of this pilot study is to gather normative data on children’s verb comprehension, mean length of sentence production, and their verb argument structure accuracy, to allow for future identification of strengths and weaknesses in the sentence production of children with language impairmen...

‘The Microbiome and the Pathophysiology of Asthma’
(2016)

Abstract:
Abstract Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease whose prevalence is increasing in the western world. Recently research has begun to focus on the role the microbiome plays in asthma pathogenesis in the hope of further understanding this respiratory disorder. Considered sterile until recently, the lungs have revealed themselves to contain a unique microbiota. A shift towards molecular methods for the quantification and sequencing of microbial DNA has revealed that the airways harbour a unique microbiota with apparent, reproducible differences present between healthy and diseased lungs. There is a hope that in classifying the microbial load of the asthmatic airway an insight may be afforded as to the possible role pulmonary microbes may have in propagating an asthmatic airway response. This could potentially pave the way for new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of chronic lung conditions such as asthma.

"A Planet Where the Muses Work Together": Opera Training as a Vehicle for Interdisciplinary Engagement in Higher Education
(2015)
Hamilton, Jennifer
Abstract:

This study is positioned within the context of the current recommendations for increased interdisciplinary and collaborative engagement in curriculum development (Department of Education and Skills, 2011, p.35). Supported also by recommendations for professional arts practitioners to be multi-skilled, circulated in such publications as the European Association of Conservatoires reports (AEC, 2003), Trinity Guildhall's The Reflective Conservatoire (Odam & Bannan, 2005) and Collaborative Learning in Higher Education (Gaunt & Westerlund, 2013), this study is proposing that there are significant educational benefits from the implementation of and participation in opera-based activities. These possible benefits are discussed along with an overview of the range of skills and requirements which a career in opera is likely to demand. The paper includes as case-history a recent example of this collaborative approach - The Paris Collection, a large-scale opera project wh...

"If you can't treat HPV, why test for it?" Women's attitudes to the changing face of cervical cancer prevention: a focus group study

Abstract:
Abstract Background The relationship between infection with high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer is transforming prevention through HPV vaccination and HPV oncogenic testing. In Ireland, a national cervical cancer screening programme and HPV vaccination were recently launched; HPV testing is currently being integrated into the screening programme. Women’s views on the transformation of cervical cancer prevention have been relatively little investigated. Methods Using qualitative focus groups, we determined women’s knowledge, attitudes towards, and acceptability of cervical cancer screening, HPV oncogenic testing and vaccination of HPV. Fifty nine women, recruited through primary care in Ireland, participated in ten focus groups. A dynamic topic guide was developed from literature reviewed. Women were provided with standardised information about HPV infection, HPV test...

"Of Cabbages and Kings": restructuring in the Irish food industry
(1991)
Tovey, Hilary
Abstract:
The food processing industry in Ireland has become more concentrated, diversified, and internationalised in recent years. To date, most Irish discussions have tended to treat the food industry as part of agriculture, assuming a consensus of interests around its development between farmers and industry managers. This paper questions that assumption, drawing on international studies of vertical integration in food production to explore the effects of structural change in the industry for farmers, and to a lesser extent, for industry employees and food consumers.
