A cloud computing database for data extraction in a Cochrane review
(2013)
STORDAL, BRITTA KRISTINA
Abstract:
Background: An online database was needed for the Cochrane review ?Taxanes for the treatment of platinum pre-treated epithelial ovarian cancer? for several reasons. Firstly, a large amount of clinical parameters were to be extracted from 68 identified studies and the data was to be subdivided into 16 different subgroups. Secondly, there were 6 authors performing data extraction for this Cochrane review, working at 4 different institutions. Therefore data could not be entered and stored centrally at one institution. Objectives: Development of a cloud computing database accessible online for all authors performing data extraction. Methods: The database utilises cloud computing, such that the information is stored online and can be accessed from anywhere and is populated through a web-based user interface. Results: Using an online database-as-a-service and cloud computing to query and compare data allows the elimination of transaction concurrency conflicts. That is, the 2 authors c...

A citation-based approach to automatic topical indexing of scientific literature
(2010)
Mahdi, Abdulhussain E; Joorabchi, Arash
Abstract:
Topical indexing of documents with keyphrases is a common method used for revealing the subject of scientific and research documents to both human readers and information retrieval tools, such as search engines. However, scientific documents that are manually indexed with keyphrases are still in the minority. This article describes a new unsupervised method for automatic keyphrase extraction from scientific documents which yields a performance on a par with human indexers. The method is based on identifying references cited in the document to be indexed and, using the keyphrases assigned to those references, for generating a set of high-likelihood keyphrases for the document. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed method by using it to automatically index a third-party testset of research documents. Reported experimental results show that the performance of our method, measured in terms of consistency with human indexers, is competitive with that achieved by state-of-the-...

A Coasean Approach to Bank Resolution Policy in the Eurozone
(2013)
Connor, Gregory; O'Kelly , Brian
Abstract:
The Eurozone needs a bank resolution regime that can work across seventeen independent nations of diverse sizes with varying levels of financial development, limited fiscal coresponsibility, and with systemic instability induced by quick and low-cost deposit transfers across borders. We advocate a Coasean approach to bank resolution policy in the Eurozone, which emphasises clear and consistent contracts and makes explicit the public ownership of the externality costs of bank distress. A variety of resolution mechanisms are compared including bank debt holder bail-in, prompt corrective action, and contingent convertible bonds. We argue that the “dilute-in” of bank debt holders via contingent convertibility provides a clearer and simpler Coasean bargain for the Eurozone than the more conventional alternatives of debt holder bail-in or prompt corrective action.

A Cocktail Menu is Essential to Growing Sales
(2011)
Murphy, James Peter
Abstract:
<p>The earliest mention of a cocktail menu list in Ireland dates back to Saturday 10th July 1886 when the original Burlington Hotel, Andrew Street, Dublin advertised it’s range of available cocktails (Irish Times Ltd, p.7). The cocktail menu has indeed been around quite a long time but unfortunately a lot of bars do not afford it the same level of attention which they would give to their food or wine menus. Your cocktail menu is a most crucial component towards creating the right image, attention to detail and innovative approaches to your bars cocktails for your customers. The menus form, layout, content, and perhaps even the character of the menu can provide your customers with an insight into the very heart of your bar. In most cases, the menu placed in front of a customer (in the bar or over the internet) is the only chance that you have to communicate what your unique product is, and why it is better then your competitors. Cocktails all...

Metaphor and space
(2005)
FRENDA, ALESSIO SALVATORE
Abstract:
The present research study aims at providing an insight on the issue of metaphor and space conceptualization through the comparative analysis of Irish and Italian prepositions, based on the theoretical foundations of cognitive linguistics, an insight into which was provided in the form of a literature review. In order to pursue this end, two distinct corpora were set up for the two languages by drawing textual strings containing instances of morphologically simple prepositions. Subsequently, it was illustrated how simple prepositions, both in Irish and Italian, primarily express relations of a spatial kind. Once this was done, prepositions were grouped together according to their basic spatial meaning (BSM), and three such BSMs were chosen for being analyzed cross-linguistically with respect to their nonspatial readings, which were shown to be linked to their spatial meanings by means of metaphorical mapping of conceptual structure, according to the expectations that the theoretical...

A comparative study of high voltage overhead lines and high voltage underground cables
(2013)
Flood, Micheál
Abstract:
Currently in Ireland, in line with directions from the EU Heads of State and Governments there is a €4 Billion plan set out to update the electrical transmission system across the country by increasing the existing network by about 20%. It is proposed that this electrical infrastructural upgrade is to be carried out by incorporating new lengths of high voltage overhead lines into the existing network. However since these plans were made aware to the public there has been out-pouring of controversy and concerns towards the proposals. Considerable concerns towards perceived health effects, environmental issues and property devaluation are all of considerable discussions. Many people who advocate that the high voltage electricity cables should be laid underground and not overhead and also claim that an underground alternative is economically feasible. The primary aim of this dissertation is to compare and contrast the concerns and issues associated with the installation of high voltage...

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare the impact of portable body sensing technology (SW3 Armband) and a physical activity log. Participants’ physical activity adherence levels were recorded over a six month period. The primary research involved a six month physical activity programme, entitled, ‘Get Started and Stick with it’, the programme commenced in October 2010 and finished in April 2011. Females (n=30) were recruited via a local newspaper and a radio advertisement. Participants were randomised to an Intervention Group (a), (n=15) or an Intervention Group (b), (n=15). The Intervention Group (a) (IGa) had the use of the SW3 Armband and a logbook, while the Intervention Group (b) (IGb) had the use of a logbook only for the duration of the study. To be eligible to participate in the study the following criteria applied: (1) age range: 30-50 years, (2) gender: female, (3) location: live in the Letterkenny or surrounding area, (4) physical activity levels: did not meet...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
In Ireland, the most prevalent domestic wastewater treatment application in unsewered areas is the conventional septic tank system comprising of septic tank and soil absorption system, the latter more commonly referred to as a percolation area in Ireland. Recent concern has been expressed over the discharge of on-site effluent to highly permeable soils which, although permitted in current Irish EPA guidelines, has generated debate as to whether an insufficient level of treatment in the subsoil?s vadose zone is being achieved. In situations where a septic tank installation is considered unsuitable according to a rigorous site assessment, a secondary treatment system such as a horizontal subsurface-flow reed bed can be installed to improve the effluent quality before discharge to the subsoil. On-site research was thus carried out to assess and compare the treatment capabilities of freely-draining subsoils receiving both septic tank and secondary effluents in tandem w...

Abstract:
Reproductive performance has an important effect on economic efficiency in dairy farms with short yearly periods of breeding. The individual factors affecting the outcome of an artificial insemination have been extensively researched in many univariate models. In this study, these factors are analysed in combination to create a comprehensive multivariate model of conception in Irish dairy cows. Logistic regression, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree learning and Random Forests are trained using 2,723 artificial insemination records from Irish research farms. An additional 4,205 breeding events from commercial dairy farms are used to evaluate and compare the performance of each data mining technique. The models are assessed in terms of both discrimination and calibration ability. The logistic regression model was found to be the most useful model for predicting insemination outcome. This model is proposed as being appropriate for use in decision support and in general simulation of Irish dai...

Abstract:
Recent extensive water quality surveys in Ireland revealed that diffuse phosphorus (P) pollution originating from agricultural land and transported by runoff and subsurface flows is the primary cause of the deterioration of surface water quality. P transport from land to water can be described by mathematical models that vary in modelling approach, complexity and scale (plot, field and catchment). Here, three mathematical models (SWAT, HSPF and SHETRAN/GOPC) of diffuse P pollution have been tested in three Irish catchments to explore their suitability in Irish conditions for future use in implementing the European Water Framework Directive. After calibrating the models, their daily flows and total phosphorus (TP) exports are compared and assessed. The HSPF model was the best at simulating the mean daily discharge while SWAT gave the best calibration results for daily TP loads. Annual TP exports for the three models and for two empirical models were compared with measured data. No si...

Eutrophication from agricultural sources : a comparison of SWAT, HSPF and SHETRAN/GOPC phosphorus models for three Irish catchments - Final Report

Abstract:
Phosphorous has been implicated as the primary cause of the deterioration of surface water quality in Ireland. Extensive water quality surveys revealed that diffuse sources (runoff and subsurface flows) from agricultural land are the major contributors of phosphorus to surface waters. The mechanism of phosphorus movement from land to water can be described by a number of mathematical models that vary in modelling approaches and scales (plot, field and catchment). In this work three efficient mathematical models of diffuse source pollution in general and of phosphorus in particular have been applied, for the first time, to three Irish catchments (Clarianna (Co. Tipperary), Dripsey (Co. Cork) and Oona (Co. Tyrone)) in order to explore the suitability of these models in Irish conditions for future use in implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). The models are: (i) Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), (ii) Hydrological Simulation Programme FORTRAN (HSPF) and (iii) Systèm...

A comparison of the theoretical and experimental behaviour of a model earth dam in terms of slope stability
(2014)
McQuaid, Stephen
Abstract:
Slope failure is one of the most prominent difficulties experienced in geotechnical engineering where catastrophes lead to the destruction of property and ultimately significant loss of life. One such salient example of this was the Oso slope failure which occurred 6.4km east of Oso, Washington, USA on the 22 nd of March 2014. This disaster, deemed to be the single deadliest landslide event in United States history claimed the lives of 26 people whilst 7 people remain unaccounted for. The purpose of this dissertation is to accurately construct a model earth dam and design an experimental methodology that produces consistent and comparable results in terms of its slope stability. The experimental results are critically compared with the theoretical results produced by the SLIDE slope stability software, with the overall objective of determining if computer analysis can accurately predict the behaviour of a model earth dam. This dissertation was compiled by completing an extensive rev...

A comparison of theoretical and experimental behaviour of a model dam in terms of seepage
(2015)
O'Hanrahan, Brian
Abstract:
In Civil and Geotechnical engineering a thorough knowledge of pore water seepage analysis is critical for the design of dams and structures where a water table is encountered. The following dissertation will primarily look at analysing pore water seepage rates, a background of all seepage failure mechanisms and the standards that govern it. The main objective of this dissertation is to create a model dam and compare the experimental rates of seepage with theoretical values. Permeability is the primary factor which affects seepage rates, it is a measure of the transmissivity of a soil, with the coefficient of permeability (k) the name given to the physical parameter. Methods of experimentally and empirically estimating the coefficient of permeability were identified and adopted as part of the theoretical calculation of seepage rates under a model dam. By means of a drainage and seepage tank, an experimental model dam was constructed. The dam formed the basis of a seepage rate a...

Abstract:
A comparative study of Lough Sillan (Co. Cavan) and Lough Dan (Co. Wicklow) revealed that these two Irish lakes differ markedly in their physicoRchemical and faunal characteristics. The possible causes of these observed dissimilarities are reviewed and discussed. Lough Sillan may be classified as moderately eutrophic while Lough Dan is both humic and oligotrophic.

A computational stylometric analysis of characterization by playwrights
(2008)
Lynch, Gerard
Abstract:
Is it possible for an author to create characters truly independent of their own voice? Do characters from the same play exhibit similar characteristics in style? Are some playwrights arguably better at creating unique characters that transcend their own personal style and become individual entities in their own right? Are playwrights who adhere to iambic pentameter or other metrical constraint thereby confined to the construction of characters whose language cannot be differentiated on the basis of the syntax of their language? This study seeks to address these questions and provide more information about what constitutes characterization in plays. Methods from the field of authorship attribution, which are normally used to determine the provenance of anonymous texts are used on the individual text of characters from a number of playwrights.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Accountability in global health is a commonly invoked though less commonly questioned concept. Critically reflecting on the concept and how it is put into practice, this paper focuses on the who, what, how, and where of accountability, mapping its defining features and considering them with respect to real-world circumstances. Changing dynamics in global health cooperation - such as the emergence of new health public-private partnerships and the formal inclusion of non-state actors in policy making processes - provides the backdrop to this discussion. Discussion Accountability is frequently reduced to one set of actors holding another to account. Changes in the global health landscape and in relations between actors have however made the practice of accountability more com...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Ubiquitous computing environments have the potential to provide rich sources of information about a user and their surroundings. However, the nature of context information means that it must be gathered in an ad-hoc and distributed manner with many devices and sensors storing potentially relevant data. In an ad-hoc ubiquitous computing environment, retrieval of context information cannot rely on a fixed meta-data schema. This works shows how an ontology driven context service architecture may perform distributed open schema queries over heterogeneous context sources in a potentially decentralised manner.
