A Double-Tuned 1H/23Na Two Element Phased Array System for In Vivo 23Na Magnetic Resonance Microscopy at 7 T

WETTERLING, FRIEDRICH; FAGAN, ANDREW
Abstract:
Accurate identification of the potentially salvageable ischaemic penumbra is critical in identifying stroke patients who will benefit from thrombolysis and in designing future clinical trials of potential neuroprotectants. The perfusion/diffusion mismatch technique, currently used to detect penumbra is an indirect measure, lacking precision. The ability to accurately quantify TSC in vivo could allow developing of a direct bio-marker for tissue viability in stroke [1]. However, quantitative 23Na-Magnetic Resonance Microscopy (qNa-MRM) of the rat brain is challenging due to the low SNR measured in the MRM images, which results from the 23Na nucleus?s low in vivo concentration, low gyromagnetic ratio, fast transversal signal decay, and the required small voxel size (< 4 ?l).

A Cookbook Collection
Abstract:
<p>Hi I’m Donna! A Thirty-something female, working 9-5 and dreaming of food all day long.</p> <p>I particularly love Italian food, chocolate, cheese and curry – in no particular order. I am one of those people who actually enjoys looking at your lunch/dinner pics on Twitter. As the name suggests, I have far too many cookbooks and the collection just keeps on growing (honestly – you should see my wishlist on Book Depository!). I read them like novels and the more photos the better. My notes and downloaded recipes are recorded on scraps of paper scattered all over my kitchen, so this blog is my way of organising them. There is nothing difficult or particularly authentic about these recipes, simply my interpretation of other peoples recipes and some made up myself.</p>

A Cost-Optimal Assessment of Buildings in Ireland Using Directive 2010/31/EU of the Energy Performance of Buildings Recast
(2014)
Pountney, Christopher, Mr; Ross, David, Mr; Armstrong, Sean
Abstract:
<p>This paper describes the first cost-optimal assessment of national energy performance standards for buildings in Ireland undertaken in accordance with Article 5 of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) Recast [Council Directive 2010/31/EU]. This paper focuses on new-build standards which are set out in Part L of the Building Regulations in Ireland. A set of representative residential and nonresidential building models were selected. The impact on primary energy demand of a wide range of energy efficiency measures and renewable technologies was evaluated for each building model and the corresponding lifecycle costs were calculated. The results show that the new-build residential standards in Ireland are in the cost-optimal range, while the new-build non-residential standards deliver a greater primary energy demand than the cost-optimal range.</p>

A Critique of Singaporean Internal Tertiary Education Programmes offered by Private Colleges: A Brief Comparison with Ireland

Abstract:
<p>Singapore has a similar population to Ireland and gross domestic products (GDPs) for both countries are comparable. However, culturally and in other respects, the two republics are very different. Unemployment in Ireland is six times higher than in Singapore where GDP has almost doubled since 2007 but has fallen by nearly 11% in Ireland in the same time-span. One aspect of life in both countries transcending cultural differences is the importance placed on tertiary education. The Irish and Singaporean people share a deep commitment to education and the imperative of building and maintaining a knowledge economy is central to both societies. Employment in higher education in Singapore is more tenuous than in Ireland and it is common for a lecturer who is considered to have underperformed to not have a contract renewed. Irish higher education adheres closely to European policies and practices, particularly in adoption of quality assurance procedures. Consequently, it is expect...

Abstract:
Abstract Background Ireland is heavily reliant on non-EU migrant health workers to staff its health system. Shortages of locally trained health workers and policies which facilitate health worker migration have contributed to this trend. This paper provides insight into the experiences of non-EU migrant doctors in the Irish health workforce. Method In-depth interviews were conducted with 37 non-EU migrant doctors in Ireland in 2011/2012. Results Respondents believed they had been recruited to fill junior hospital doctor ‘service’ posts. These posts are unpopular with locally trained doctors due to the limited career progression they provide. Respondents felt that their hopes for career progression and postgraduate training in Ireland had gone unrealised and that they were becoming de-skilled. As a result, most respondents were actively considering onward migration from Ireland. ...

Abstract:
Abstract Background The potential for the human gut microbiota to serve as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes has been the subject of recent discussion. However, this has yet to be investigated using a rapid PCR-based approach. In light of this, here we aim to determine if degenerate PCR primers can detect aminoglycoside and β-lactam resistance genes in the gut microbiota of healthy adults, without the need for an initial culture-based screen for resistant isolates. In doing so, we would determine if the gut microbiota of healthy adults, lacking recent antibiotic exposure, is a reservoir for resistance genes. Results The strategy employed resulted in the identification of numerous aminoglycoside (acetylation, adenylation and phosphorylation) and β-lactam (including bla OXA, bla TEM, bla SHV and bla CTX-M) resistance gene homologues. On the basis of homology, it would appear that ...

At a time when technological advances are providing new sensor capabilities, novel network capabilities, long-range communications technologies and data interpreting and delivery formats via the World Wide Web, we never before had such opportunities to sense and analyse the environment around us. However, the challenges exist. While measurement and detection of environmental pollutants can be successful under laboratory-controlled conditions, continuous in-situ monitoring remains one of the most challenging aspects of environmental sensing. This paper describes the development and test of a multi-sensor heterogeneous real-time water monitoring system. A multi-sensor system was deployed in the River Lee, County Cork, Ireland to monitor water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity and dissolved ...

Abstract:
Abstract Fibroadenomas are common benign breast tumours that display a characteristic pathological morphology, although several epithelial and stromal variations exist. A very rare histological finding is the presence of multinucleated giant cells throughout the stroma of a benign fibroadenoma. Cells of this type, which are more commonly found incidentally within the interlobular stroma of breast tissue, are benign and should not be mistaken for malignant cells on microscopic examination. Unfortunately a lack of awareness of this pathological entity can lead to diagnostic confusion amongst pathologists resulting in the multinucleate giant cells being mistaken for highly mitotic cells and consequently the fibroadenoma being mistaken for a malignant lesion. This may have serious implications for the subsequent management of the patient. The presence of this unusual cell type in the stroma does not alter the prognosis of otherwise benign lesion. We encountered two such ca...

A discourse analysis of psychotherapists’ account of their work with people who are taking prescribed anti-depressant medication.
(2015)
Mulligan, Nigel
Abstract:
Rates of depression are growing worldwide. Depression usually involves symptoms such as negative thinking, feelings of helplessness and a loss of energy and it can also affect physical ill health. The causes of depression can be attributed to a number of interrelated factors including biological, psychological and social elements. Recommended treatment interventions for symptoms of depression include anti-depressant medication and psychotherapy. Certain anti-depressants can cause unpleasant side effects with some people. There is little research or literature investigating the clinical observations and insights of psychotherapists regarding the impact of anti-depressant medication on their work and the potential issues therein. Within this Discourse Analysis study, individual interviews were carried out with seven psychotherapists from varied therapeutic orientations. The semi-structured interviews enquired as to whether and how psychotherapists make any adjustments to their therape...

Abstract:
Obesity is a modern lifestyle epidemic that is threatening our health and well-being.This was the key message delivered by Health Minister Edwin Poots at the launch of The Framework for Preventing and Addressing Overweight and Obesity in Northern Ireland 2012-2022: 'A Fitter Future for All'.This ten year strategy will seek to improve the health and wellbeing of people throughout their entire life, from newborns to seniors.Minister Poots said: "We need to face the issue of obesity head on. It's an issue that will require commitment and action from across all sectors, including other government departments and agencies. It is therefore my intention to invest more than £7 million towards tackling the problem of obesity over the next three years."The negative impact on health caused by obesity cannot be over stated. Being obese increases the risk of developing serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, some cancers and type 2 diabetes."It is a signif...

A Framework for an Action Plan on Marine Biodiversity in Ireland
(2000)
Costello, M J
Abstract:
As this century ends three priorities have emerged in environmental management, namely biodiversity, coastal zone management, and sustainable use of natural resources. At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio, 1992, the nations of the world agreed that the basis for future economic development must be the maintenance of biodiversity. The Convention on Biological Diversity was signed at this conference and ratified by Ireland in 1996 (Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, 1998). These priorities are setting the agenda for the management of the marine environment and require people to broaden their understanding of the marine ecosystems and review their approaches to the use of marine resources. This report, with an emphasis on marine ecosystems, firstly defines biodiversity and how it can be measured, and indicates the reasons it is a priority for management. These reasons have been politically recognised at global and European...

Abstract:
Abstract Background The financial crisis that hit the global economy in 2007 was unprecedented in the post war era. In general the crisis has created a difficult environment for health systems globally. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for assessing the resilience of health systems in terms of how they have adjusted to economic crisis. Resilience can be understood as the capacity of a system to absorb change but continue to retain essentially the same identity and function. The Irish health system is used as a case study to assess the usefulness of this framework. Methods The authors identify three forms of resilience: financial, adaptive and transformatory. Indicators of performance are presented to allow for testing of the framework and measurement of system performance. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to yield data for the Irish case study. Quantitative data were collected from government...

A Framework for Benchmarking Interactive Collision Detection
(2009)
WOULFE MUIRIS; MANZKE MICHAEL
Abstract:
Collision detection is a vital component of applications spanning myriad fields, yet there exists no means for developers to analyse the suitability of their collision detection algorithms across the spectrum of scenarios that could be encountered. To rectify this, we propose a framework for benchmarking interactive collision detection, which consists of a single generic benchmark that can be adapted using a number of parameters to create a large range of practical benchmarks. This framework allows algorithm developers to test the validity of their algorithms across a wide test space and allows developers of interactive applications to recreate their application scenarios and quickly determine the most amenable algorithm. To demonstrate the utility of our framework, we adapted it to work with three collision detection algorithms supplied with the Bullet Physics SDK. Our results demonstrate that those algorithms conventionally believed to offer the best performance are not always the...

A Good News Story About Irish Health Care
(2011)
LAYTE, RICHARD
Abstract:
Life expectancy for older people in Ireland has been increasing steadily since the 1980s. Despite this, Irish life expectancies for the over 65s lagged seriously behind the EU average as recently as the mid 1990s. But Irish death rates for the over 65s dropped dramatically between 2000 and 2005, moving Ireland closer to the European average. Whereas between 1996 and 1999 death rates (from all causes) in Ireland had fallen by just over 5%, between 2000 and 2004 the decrease was over 26%. What lies behind this rare and welcome good news story? An article** by researchers from the ESRI and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Trinity College Dublin sets out the background to this sharp fall in death rates, and examines how the greater use of effective drug therapies contributed to this result

Abstract:
The OCO’s complaint handling procedure is underpinned by the Ombudsman for Children Act, 2002 and ten complementary guiding principles. These principles and the OCO’s corresponding commitments in relation to complaint handling practice are outlined below. 10 • The OCO provides an impartial complaint service. • The OCO operates a complaint procedure that: - respects local complaint procedures; - is neither an advocate for any child nor an adversary of any body complained against; - reflects the OCO’s commitment to strive to do the right thing in a fair and just manner. • The OCO’s decisions and actions respect: - the provisions and parameters of the Ombudsman for Children Act, 2002; - the OCO’s core values and corresponding commitment to good complaint handling practice. • The OCO aims to operate a complaint service and procedure that balances the need for consistency and flexibility appropriately. • The OCO is proportionate in its approach to handling complaints. The process applied...
