A Mobility-Aware File System - file availability in a mobile-aware, context aware environment
(2005)
O'Flaherty, Owen
Abstract:
The rapid growth in number of portable electronic devices with wireless networking capabilities in recent times has thrown up many new computing problems and opportunities. Such devices typically lack the processing power common to more familiar desktop and laptop computers. They are also constrained by their limited power supply. Given the scenario of an urban environment in which a large number of people using such devices constantly move about with a need to share information, it is clear that existing network topologies are inherently unsuited to supporting the sort of applications that they might need. This dissertation project addresses the changing role of that most integral part of computer systems in this new environment - the file system. A distributed file system called Stirling is presented that takes advantage of both the ad hoc nature of the network environment and the structure provided by the WAND (Wireless Ad-hoc Network for Dublin.) This filesystem offers a set of ...

A Monograph Study of Offshore Fishing and Social Change in Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford
(2001)
Collier, P
Abstract:
This sociological study was financed by The Marine Institute following the presentation of a preliminary paper entitled 'Irish Offshore Share Fishermen - transposing artisan convention into commercial control' by Peter Collier Ph.D. This paper offered a theoretical framework for probing topics of change regarding offshore fishing convention and control techniques used by vessel owners in the Republic of Ireland. The study aims to present and interpret evidence dealing with human resources and offshore fishing in the Kilmore Quay local authority port, Co. Wexford. This evidence was collected over a two month period, August-September, 2000. The study concentrates on the profile of offshore fishermen and conditions of change related to increasing spans of control over the cumulative Kilmore fishing effort. The study is local in its framing plane. A general review of the status of Irish offshore crewmen is taken into consideration at the concluding stage of this report.

A multi disciplinary obstetric emergency training programme.
(2012)
Whelan, Mary
Abstract:
The Rotunda Hospital (Dublin) obstetric emergency training programme (RHOET) was designed, in 2008, to meet the ongoing education and training needs of the local multidisciplinary team. Prior to its implementation, senior midwives attended the advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO) course, and many of the obstetricians attended the Management of obstetric emergencies and trauma (MOET) and/or ALSO courses. Attendance at these off site courses meant that the only opportunity for team training was the informal and ad hoc 'drills and skills' that took place in the birthing suite. This paper documents our journey since RHOET was implemented.

Abstract:
Alexandrium ostenfeldii isolates from distinct geographical locations showed almost identical profiles, primarily consisting of 20-methyl spirolide G (20-meG). Whereas the Scottish isolate produces only this variant, the Irish isolate additionally yields slight amounts of 13-desmethyl spirolide C (13-desmeC). These profiles were also reflected in the field data, where 20-meG was the most abundant spirolide throughout all samples and years.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Creating the Entrepreneurial Mindset Amongst Graduates
(2016)
Hamouda, Angela; Ledwith, Colman
Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to investigate how one third level college in Ireland has responded to economic change with the development of a multi-disciplinary entrepreneurship programme and to explore its impact on the development of entrepreneurial mind-sets amongst its current students and graduates. The findings are based on results of surveys from twenty graduates from the programme who have come from a cross section of engineering and science disciplines. Findings of this study indicate that a dedicated entrepreneurship programme specifically designed for non-business students has had an overwhelming positive impact on their entrepreneurial attitudes and intentions. In particular, students‟ understanding of entrepreneurship has been significantly changed since completing the programme, their level of confidence towards starting a business has increased and collectively the group have embraced the culture of entrepreneurship. This paper can provide useful information to a...

A Multiple Autonomous Agent System for Negotiating Valued Information Exchange on the Web
(2000)
O'Neill, Larry
Abstract:
The amount of detailed personal information being recorded electronically about individuals is growing rapidly. The increasing commercial pervasiveness of the Internet is a major factor in this growth. This information has a significant economic value yet it is only relatively recently that data subjects have begun to expect and receive some reward for the surrender and/or use of their information. It is considered likely that this trend will continue, producing a growing uneasiness over the erosion of personal privacy. In time, legislation or acceptable practice may oblige data users who wish to gather consumer information, to pay data subjects to provide that information. The mechanics and logistics of data subjects supplying their own information to data users necessitates an automated system to carry out the transactions. Any such system has to be able to cope with the widest variety possible of data formats and quantities. It should allow the data sellers to specify at a very f...

A narrative exploration into the experiences of mothers living with HIV in Ireland.
(2014)
Proudfoot, Denise
Abstract:
Mothers living with HIV (MLH) are the focus of this narrative study. HIV is increasingly seen as a chronic illness because of medical advances in its treatment. Much research with HIV positive mothers is situated within the dominant biomedical discourse focusing more on outcome rather than experience and, while valuable, it fails to provide insight into their subjective experiences. In Ireland, women represent a third of the newly diagnosed HIV population (O’Donnell, Moran and Igoe 2013), many of whom have children, and migrant African-origin women represent a significant percentage of these new diagnoses. However, no research has examined contemporary maternal HIV experiences within an Irish context. This is an important fact considering the changing nature of HIV and that most HIV positive women are prescribed Highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) during their pregnancies and so give birth to HIV negative babies. This study explores the HIV maternal experience as the psyc...

Abstract:
Abstract Background Internationally, continuing professional competence (CPC) is an increasingly important issue for all health professionals. With the introduction of the first CPC framework for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and the imminent introduction of CPC for Paramedics and Advanced Paramedics (APs) in Ireland, this study aimed to identify attitudes towards CPC and factors that might influence such a framework. Methods All EMTs (n = 925), Paramedics and APs (n = 1816) registered in Ireland were invited by email to complete an anonymous on-line survey. The study instrument was designed based on continuous professional development (CPD) questionnaires used by other healthcare professions. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed. Results The overall response rates were: EMTs 43 % (n = 399), ...

A need for definition: a matter of life and death for human embryos

Abstract:

A recent IMJ commentaryon brain stem death criteria summarised ethical and technical issues concerning “end of life decisions”, and we concur that physicians should have competence in eliciting the proper sequence of brain stem signs in clinical practice. However, a truly comprehensive dialogue on the definition of death should address another question that confronts IVF clinics in Ireland each day—when does a human embryo die? Despite the enormous social and political energy focused on “right to life” issues over recent decades, the death of a human embryo remains a sadly forgotten topic. As Dr Murphy indicated1, the introduction of brain stem death criteria in 1967 recognised permanent loss of consciousness and spontaneous breathing after the inactivation of ...

A New Approach for Analysing Income Convergence across Countries.
(2003)
O'Neill, Donal; Van Kerm, Philippe
Abstract:
In this paper we develop a coherent framework that integrates both traditional measures of b-convergence and s-convergence within a study of cross-country income dynamics. To do this we exploit the close links that exist between studies of income mobility and studies analysing the progressivity of the tax system. We also develop a welfare interpretation for the concept of b-convergence, which distinguishes it from the more general form of s-convergence and which also suggests that the b-process may be worthy of independent study. We illustrate our approach using data for the period 1960-200

A new approach to interior lighting design :early stage research in Ireland
(2014)
Duff, James, Mr; Kelly, Kevin
Abstract:

Current standards for interior lighting design are discussed and an alternative design methodology proposed. Cuttle has previously suggested a new criterion be defined as perceived adequacy of illumination (PAI), and that the metric for specifying minimum illumination standards becomes mean room surface exitance (MRSE). This metric specifies the overall brightness of illumination, enabling its distribution to be planned in terms of target/ ambient illuminance ratio (TAIR). This new methodology is explained, analysed and discussed along with on-going research at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

A New Year's Resolution - be smart about your drinking!
(2012)
Public Health Agency
Abstract:
Now 2012 has arrived, the Public Health Agency is encouraging people to make a New Year's resolution to know their limits when it comes to alcohol, not to drink excessively and to cut back for a while, especially if the festive period led to a little too much consumption.Owen O'Neill, PHA Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager and drugs and alcohol lead, explained: "The New Year is a great opportunity for us to be positive about our health, making resolutions that make us look and feel better. If people choose to drink, staying within the safe drinking limits is important. Excessive and binge drinking can have lasting effects on health, such as damage to the liver, heart, brain and stomach. Drinking too much can also increase the risk of accidents and antisocial behaviour as well as sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. And it doesn't have to be drinking to extremes - regularly drinking over the recommended limits can have a damaging e...

A Note on the Convergence Analysis of LMS Adaptive Filters with Gaussian Data
(1988)
BOLAND, FRANCIS MORGAN
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Necessary and sufficient conditions fur the convergence of LMS adaptive filters with Gaussian data have been established by Horowitz and Senne [3], with the recent support of Feuer and Weinstein [4]. A feature of both of these studies is the necessity to investigate hounds on the roots of rather unwieldy characteristic equations. This note shows how such an investigation can be avoided through the use of a theorem of Gantmacher [SI. In formally applying this theorem, similar results to those of the above studies are obtained in a precise and straightforward manner.

A novel approach to digital watermarking, exploiting colour spaces
(2011)
Lusson, Frederic
Abstract:
Watermarking is the process of embedding information in a carrier in order to protect the ownership of text, music, video and images, while steganography is the art of hiding information. Normally watermarks are embedded in images but remain visible in the majority of commercial image databases, such as Getty (gettyimages.ie) or iStock Photo (istockphoto.com). Watermarked images display ownership information in the form of copyright notices super-imposed on the image itself. However this leaves traditional watermarking techniques vulnerable to tampering. Thus the advantage of using steganographic techniques for watermarking is that the watermark is resistant to detection and consequently to tampering. Robustness is a characteristic of critical importance, in order that a watermark is to survive image manipulation and enhancement processes, as well as intentional attacks, to ensure piracy is prevented. A review of digital image-based steganography and watermarking techniques is carri...

A novel mechanism of regulating breast cancer cell migration via palmitoylation-dependent alterations in the lipid raft affiliation of CD44
(2014)
Babina, Irina S; McSherry, Elaine A; Donatello, Simona; Hill, Arnold DK; Hopkins, Ann M
Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Most breast cancer-related deaths result from metastasis, a process involving dynamic regulation of tumour cell adhesion and migration. The adhesion protein CD44, a key regulator of cell migration, is enriched in cholesterol-enriched membrane microdomains termed lipid rafts. We recently reported that raft affiliation of CD44 negatively regulates interactions with its migratory binding partner ezrin. Since raft affiliation is regulated by post-translational modifications including palmitoylation, we sought to establish the contribution of CD44 palmitoylation and lipid raft affiliation to cell migration. Methods Recovery of CD44 and its binding partners from raft versus non-raft membrane microdomains was profiled in non-migrating and migrating breast cancer cell lines. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to introduce single or double point mutations into both CD44 palmitoylation sites (Cys286 and Cys295), where...

A parents' guide to toys.
(1986)
Barnardos
Abstract:
There are many experiences which a child needs to develop to his full potential physically, intellectually and socially. Toys play a useful part in this development but other items are every bit as important e.g. toys can consist of cardboard boxes, clothes pegs, saucepans - but for the purpose of this guide, we are discussing toys one can purchase or make at home. Toys should have no sharp edges, no pieces small enough to be swallowed by a little child, be hard wearing and painted with paint which is free from lead or other toxic or harmful substances. If in doubt, ask the shop staff. If at all possible, toys for young children should be capable of being washed.
