A phenomenological research study of gay men in Ireland: from disrespect to respect: the power of social critique for self-transcendence
(2016)
Rodgers, Gerard Paul
Abstract:
Research has consistently reported sexual and gender minority persons are more vulnerable to adverse wellbeing experience, often mediated by negative social projections and interactions within high prejudice societies. On a general population level, no health differentials are evident in low prejudice societies. However, qualitative researchers are often critical of an over-reliance on broad macro associations, suggesting personcentered research can deepen generalist understandings. Phenomenology is the research methodology that was chosen for this study, because of its theoretical commitment to exploring the first personal character of everyday lived experiences. For this study, nine gay men, aged 22 to 65 years old, participated in semi-structured one-to-one interviews, with a specific focus on capturing life’s triumphs and losses. The key finding that emerged was the appropriation of disrespect to respect. Personal stories toward acceptance were socially mediated, among significa...

A potential new pathway for Staphylococcus aureus dissemination: silent survival of S.aureus phagocytosed by human monocyte-derived macrophages.
(2008)
FOSTER, TIMOTHY JAMES
Abstract:
Although considered to be an extracellular pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus is able to invade a variety of mammalian, non-professional phagocytes and can also survive engulfment by professional phagocytes such as neutrophils and monocytes. In both of these cell types S. aureus promptly escapes from the endosomes/phagosomes and proliferates within the cytoplasm, which quickly leads to host cell death. In this report we show that S. aureus interacted with human monocyte-derived macrophages in a very different way to those of other mammalian cells. Upon phagocytosis by macrophages, S. aureus persisted intracellularly in vacuoles for 3-4 days before escaping into the cytoplasm and causing host cell lysis. Until the point of host cell lysis the infected macrophages showed no signs of apoptosis or necrosis and were functional. They were able to eliminate intracellular staphylococci if prestimulated with interferon-gamma at concentrations equivalent to human therapeutic doses. S. aureus sur...

A practical guide to integrated type 2 diabetes care: Quick Reference Guide
(2016)
Harkins, Velma Dr.; ICGP Quality in Practice Committee; Department of Health and Children (DOHC); Irish Endocrine Society
Abstract:
Presently one in twenty of the Irish population have Type 2 Diabetes. Our obesity epidemic is resulting in dramatic annual increases in this prevalence. The Expert Advisory Group in Diabetes in its 2007 report recognised the need for a new model of care for people with Type 2 Diabetes. This integration across primary, secondary and tertiary care requires agreed clinical guidelines. Dr Velma Harkins of the Irish College of General Practitioners, Dr Richard Firth of the Irish Endocrine Society and Dr John Devlin of the Department of Health and Children, have provided these guidelines offering clarity in regard to diagnosis, targets for clinical care and the interventions that are appropriate at each stage of the disease

A Practice-Led Approach to Aligning Learning Theories with Learning and Teaching Strategies in Third Level Chemistry Education
(2015)
O'Connor, Christine
Abstract:

Large class sizes and a diverse student cohort have resulted in challenges for academics in third level institutes both nationally and internationally. This is a result of widening of participation and the drive to create a knowledge-based society in Ireland for the future. The focus in this paper is on third level chemistry education and looking at the issues arising both in the class and laboratory and suggesting learning and teaching strategies in order to overcome them or to enhance efficiencies. The learning and teaching strategies suggested however may be applied across many disciplines. The learning theories that underpin these strategies are highlighted throughout the text to strengthen the pedagogical framework on which they are based. Behaviourism, constructivism, cognitivism and social constructivism are the four main learning theories that support the discussion. Exemplars from the literature and practice led, and all designed, developed and evaluated in the Dub...

A Predictive Model of Student Satisfaction
(2016)
Sweeney, Lorraine
Abstract:

Retention is a challenge for all third level institutions and retention rates remain lower than colleges would like them to be. This has intensified in recent years as participation in higher education has increased and diversified. Student satisfaction and retention represents an important concern for colleges which must understand the reasons why students may choose to leave a programme. While student satisfaction and retention is a well-researched topic, there remain questions to be answered in terms of the factors that lead to non-completion. The aim of this research is to gain a greater understanding of the factors that lead to dissatisfaction and non-completion among third level students in Ireland. This research analyses data from 10,110 respondents of the Eurostudent survey, a survey of student attitude and satisfaction which is administered to all third level students in Ireland. A predictive model was developed and analysed using regression analysis and decision t...

A Proactive Approach to Semantically Oriented Service Discovery

A Proactive Approach to Semantically Oriented Service Discovery
(2005)
Lynch, David Thomas
Abstract:
Web Service based computing has evolved immensely in recent years, supported by standards bodies, academic research and industry alike. One of the noticeable omissions from the web services architecture is that of standards to support automatic discovery, automatic composition and invocation of web services. While semantic web service discovery implementations exist research into autonomous semantically oriented service discovery is far from an efficient, complete solution to the problem. Current web-service capability matching research and implementation focuses on semantically enhancing the UDDI standard for web-service discovery. While this is definitely a step in the right direction, dependence on the UDDI standard may restrain capability matchers as they mature. A prime example of this is the request/response nature of a UDDI look-up. This dissertation researches an alternative approach to web service discovery that proactively informs interested participants of the availabilit...

Abstract:
This report is based on the results of a survey undertaken to profile the extent and nature of boating tourism on the Irish Sea between the East Coast of Ireland and the West Coast of Wales. From the data collected it is possible to draw conclusions about the type of action that will help to promote the future boating tourism potential of the Irish Sea.

Abstract:
In November 2013, the Irish Regulator for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) introduced the first mandatory requirement for registrants to demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)/continuous professional competence (CPC). This qualitative study assessed the experience of practitioners with CPC-related materials provided to them by the Regulator in addition to identifying perceived or encountered practical challenges and suggested improvements six months following introduction of the requirement
