Creating a Health Promoting Environment: The Role of Food
(2011)
LAYTE, RICHARD
Abstract:
An analysis of international data on overweight and obesity shows Ireland in a very unflattering light. Along with the UK, Finland, Greece and the US, Ireland has some of the highest rates of adult and child obesity among developed countries and trends suggest that the situation is going to get worse. If so, today’s children will probably have higher levels of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and live shorter lives than their parents, bringing to a halt three decades or more of increases in Irish life expectancy.

Creating a Systematic Approach for the Reflective Practice of Service-Learning Academics through the Development of Communities of Reflective Practice
(2011)
Ó Donnchadha, Brian
Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis in education is a qualitative examination of the reflective practice of academics who use service-learning, which can be described as an experiential pedagogy whereby students learn through providing a needed service in the community. Over a period of two years, I interviewed 43 American practitioners about how they reflected on their practice of teaching in and researching about engagement with the community. This study found that practitioners used a wide variety of reflection techniques including contemplative, verbal and written techniques, conducted alone and in groups. Whilst academic collaboration such as research, publishing and conference presentations provided a method of reflecting on the academic elements of their practice; there was generally an absence of a forum in which academics could also reflect on their civic and personal development. Arising from an analysis of the data and based on the practical and philosophical needs of practitioners, I posi...

Tooth, Jonathan; Burke, Rory; Saul, Colm
Abstract:

The newly completed Criminal Courts of Justice (CCJ) at Parkgate Street in Dublin 8 is the largest courts project undertaken in the history of the Irish State. The design of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems was based on computer simulated modelling of the build ing to determine the optimum plant selection and operation based on the contract conditions and energy targets. The report will analyse the computer simulated energy targets versus the actual energy consumption and assess the benefit of engineering solutions such as twin-skin facades and heat recovery based on real data. The report will draw conclusions on the real benefit of such systems with in the built environment. In addition to the energy targets, the report will discuss the commission ing processes involved in delivering the energy targets required and the importance of designing metering strategies to enable the data to be collected and analysed.

Critical behavior of La0.75Sr0.25MnO3
(2002)
COEY, JOHN MICHAEL DAVID
Abstract:
Magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat measurements were made on a single crystal of La0.75Sr0.25MnO3. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition was found at 346 K and four critical exponents were measured as: =0.050.07, _=0.400.02, _=1.270.06, and =4.120.33. The values of critical exponents are all between mean-field values and three-dimensional-(3D)-Ising-model values. The scaling behavior is well obeyed for all measurements, and the associated exponent relations are well satisfied, validating the critical analysis. Although the cubic crystal structure of this material makes the 3D Heisenberg the expected model, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy arising from the shape of the sample causes the 3D Ising model to be important within the experimental temperature range.

Cross-listing in the U.S. and domestic investor protection
(2007)
O'Connor, Dr. Thomas .G.
Abstract:
Using the change in ordinary dividend payout as a proxy for improved governance, I show that cross-listing in the U.S. is associated with enhanced protection for the minority ordinary shareholders of exchange listed non-U.S. firms. These firms substitute dividends for enhanced governance. I find no such effect for Rule 144a firms. Interestingly, I document evidence inconsistent with the legal bonding hypothesis for Level 1 firms. I believe that their ability to pay lower dividends post-listing is primarily due to their ability to credibly commit to fair treatment of their minority investors, given their record for equitable treatment of their ordinary shareholders. They achieve this reputation by consistently paying out a sizable proportion of their earnings as dividends. I find that the firm-level governance of Level 1 firms, as measured by the number of closely held shares improves in the post-listing period. I find no such effect for Rule 144a traded firms. My results al...

Cross-Regional Equity in Health Care Funding (NIRSA) Working Paper Series No. 3
(2002)
Conniffe, Denis; Bond, Derek
Abstract:
In Ireland as in many other countries, much health care provision is State funded and State provided. Equity, in the sense of equality of 'treatment' for individuals with the same health needs irrespective of their geographical locatins, or incomes, has been, and is, very much stressed as an appropriate policy objective. However, health care delivery in Ireland (and in some other countries included the UK) operates through reginally based Health Boards responsible for provision in their own regions. This implies mechanisms for funding allocations to Boards that allow for the corresponding regional needs, but the choice of mechanism is not at all a simple or non-contestious topic. It is important though, and so a very appropriate topic for research by the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Anallysis. This Working Paper is at least a first step in a relevant investigation. Following much research, formulae have beeen developed in the UK for the allocation of ...

Abstract:
Work on levels of detail for human simulation has occurred mainly on a geometrical level, either by reducing the numbers of polygons representing a virtual human, or replacing them with a two-dimensional imposter. Approaches that reduce the complexity of motions generated have also been proposed. In this paper, we describe ongoing development of a framework for Adaptive Level Of Detail for Human Animation (ALOHA), which incorporates levels of detail for not only geometry and motion, but also includes a complexity gradient for natural behaviour, both conversational and social.

Cryptographic Access Control for a Network File System
(2001)
Harrington, Anthony
Abstract:
The rapid growth of mobile computing and the deployment of large distributed systems which span multiple administrative domains has created new challenges for security systems. Changing usage patterns and the physical limitations of mobile devices require users to rely on services provided by remote elements in the system to facilitate data access and storage requirements. Users need to minimize the trust placed in remote elements of the system such as the transmission mechanism and file server which may be beyond their control. They require secure mechanisms for accessing the sharing protected data. The access control mechanism deployed on the remote server should be flexible but capable of providing the levels of security required. Finally access control should not constitute a bottleneck in the system.
This thesis will investigate the feasibility of using cryptography as a form of access control in distributed systems. Cryptographic Access Control is a new paradigm in access...

Crystal Fields in Nd2Fe14B

COEY, JOHN MICHAEL DAVID
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The leading terms in the crystal field at both rare-earth sites in the new permanent magnet alloy Nd2Fe14B are B20 and B22s. The sign of B20 explains the variation of the anisotropy constant K1 reported by Sagawa et al. for the R2Fe14B series. Noncollinear magnetic structures involving the rare-earth sublattices cannot be attributed to second-order crystal-field effects.

Abstract:
There is an increasing acceptance across the disciplines of psychology, sociology and health that an individual’s development does not take place in a social vacuum (see for example Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model, e.g. Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006). The development of infants, in particular, is influenced by their parents: relying on them for food, shelter, protection, health care and fostering development. Hence we might expect that those individuals and organisations which influence parents (grandparents, friends, the media) will also have an indirect, but important, influence on infants

Abstract:
Recent research on some topics in amorphous magnetism is reviewed and questions are posed which should be answered by future work. The topics are i) appearance of magnetism in binary alloys of the 3d transition elements Fe, Co and Ni with sp elements, ii) conflicting ground states of amorphous iron (ferromagnetic, asperomagnetic, paramagnetic), inferred by extrapolating different Fe//xM//1//0//0// minus //x system to x equals 100, iii) influence of hydrogen on the magnetic properties of metallic glasses, iv) random magnetic anisotropy and v) amorphous ionic compounds with purely antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:

Eamonn and Brian Fallon sat in their office at the Digital Hub near the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and reflected upon their success. It was a beautiful day outside and the sun shone warmly through the windows. About them on the walls was an array of awards that they had collected over the past two years. Indeed they had received a telephone call earlier that day informing them that the radio programme ‘Down To Business’ on NewsTalk 106 had selected them as a leading example of best business practice and wanted to interview them. It was yet further recognition that the decisions that they had taken in the past were paying rich dividend.

Abstract:
The subject of my research is the contribution made by the artist Dairine Vanston to Irish Modernism. Although she received critical acclaim in her day and was considered to be the most avant-garde of her generation, she is little known today. Vanston regularly contributed to mainstream exhibitions in Dublin, such as the Irish Exhbition of Living art, for over forty years. I intend to catalogue and re-assess her work.

Database Sampling to Support the Development of Data-Intensive Applications
(2000)
Bisbal, Jesús
Abstract:
A prototype database is a model of a database which exhibits the desired properties, in terms of its schema and/or data values, of an operational database. Database prototyping has been proposed as a technique to support the database design process in particular, and the whole data-intensive application development process in general (e.g. requirements elicitation, software testing, experimentation with design alternatives). Existing work on this area has been widely ignored in practice mainly on the grounds that its benefits, i.e. an increase in the quality of the resulting software systems, do not justify the costs of developing and using a satisfactory prototype of the database under construction. Increasingly more software development projects consist of extending or enhancing existing systems, as opposed to developing new ones. Legacy information systems migration and WEB-enabling existing systems are examples where operational data can be expected to be available at developmen...

Hendrik Jan Hoogendoom and his parents sat around the family dinner table and once again discussed the key problem facing the business in which they all worked. There had been many changes in the use of their land over the past two decades but they knew that they had not yet achieved the maximum economic return from it. Currently, the primary income came from recreation activities, which were extremely successful for six months of the year. But the challenge remained on how they could keep the business equally active during the long cold winter months.

Decentralized Authorization for Web Services
(2005)
Stefas, Paraskevas
Abstract:
Web Services is an area that encountered a very sudden and huge explosion on its popularity during the latest years. The advantages Web Services provide compared to traditional distributed computing methods such as Remote Procedure Calls and Distributed Objects were found to be very appealing by researchers and users and this lead to a huge development effort resulting in the creation of many standards and specifications in a rather short period of time. This fact made a lot of security experts to believe that the supporters of Web Services had not given the appropriate consideration on the security aspects of their use. Many analysts showed that the security risks were numerous from such a rapid development without the appropriate attention on security. The response from the Web Services community was the creation of many Workgroups that concentrated their efforts in providing common security mechanisms to Web Services. This dissertation investigates a different approach to Web Ser...

Democracy and the right to know – proceedings from the Department of Politics and Public Administration conference marking the 10th anniversary of freedom of information in Ireland
(2010)
Felle, Tom; Adshead, Maura
Abstract:
Freedom of information (FOI) is important because it aims to makes government open, transparent and accountable. The legislation is based on the premise that people have the right of access to public documents, save for certain exemptions (Doyle, 1997: 68). The philosophy behind such legislation is that citizens have a ‘right to know’ (Wraith, 1977: 2) how and why decisions are made by government in their name. In that context it is arguable that FOI legislation also has the potential to lead to more accountable government, less corruption and better democratic outcomes for states. Those noble aims were not, it can be argued, foremost in the minds of the founding fathers of the Irish State. Instead the State’s colonial heritage and violent birth contributed to a highly secretive and centralised bureaucracy and government. Successive governments since then have sought to keep the State’s secrets. Exposés of corruption, external influences and cultural change finally lead to Ireland’...

Demonstration of bidirectional photoinduced electron transfer (PET) sensing in 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide based thiourea anion sensors
(2009)
GUNNLAUGSSON, THORFINNUR; KRUGER, PAUL ERIC
Abstract:
The thiourea based 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide molecules 1-5 were designed as fluorescent anion sensors and their photophysical properties investigated upon recognition of biologically relevant anions such as acetate, dihydrogen phosphate and fluoride in DMSO. Synthesised in a single step from their respective aniline precursors, 6-9, these molecules were designed on the fluorophore-spacer-receptor principle, where in the case of sensors 1-3 the thiourea anion recognition moieties were connected to the fluorophore via the 4-amino moiety, while sensors 4 and 5 had the thiourea moieties connected to the 'imide' via a CH2 spacer. The current study showed that 1-5 operated as photoinduced electron transfer (PET) sensors, as no significant changes were observed in their absorption spectra, while their fluorescence emissions were quenched upon recognition of ions such as AcO(-), H2PO4(-) and F(-), which demonstrates that bidirectional PET sensing occurs in such naphthalimide based...

Dependence of the molecular orientational states on the surface conditions for the "V-shaped switching" in a ferroelectriclike liquid crystal sample
(2001)
PANOV, VITALY; VIJ, JAGDISH KUMAR; FUKUDA, ATSUO
Abstract:
The three-component mixture showing the V-shaped switching in a rubbing cell is investigated using a temperature gradient cell (TGC) where the epitaxial method of alignment, but without an alignment layer, is used. The molecular alignment and the switching characteristics in a TGC are compared with the rubbing sandwich and the open cells. The uniform or the twisted state is observed in the TGC, depending on the surface condition whether indium-tin oxide (ITO) or glass, while the uniformlike state with the average optical axis parallel to the smectic layer normal emerges only in the rubbing cell. The cancellation of the surface polarization charges by the surface free charges on the ITO surfaces determines the molecular alignment state in the TGC. From these results, we conclude that the nonpolar in-plane anchoring plays an important role in giving a uniformlike state in the rubbing cell.
