“Captain Grey and the Greedy Aliens”: Obtaining normative data on a new test for the production of verbs at sentence level in children
(2014)
Bridgeman, Ellen
Abstract:
Background: Children with specific language impairment (CwSLI) exhibit significant difficulties in language ability affecting areas such verb knowledge and verb production, producing fewer verbs and verb argument structures than typically developing (TD) children. As verbs are critical to sentence production it is also not surprising that they also produce fewer complex sentences. Although these areas of impairment are widely acknowledged there is a dearth of clinically available instruments that comprehensively assess verbs production and complex sentences in this population. Aims: To gather normative data from typically developing children aged 4;06-12;00 on their sentence complexity and production of verbs and their related argument structures using the newly developed story retell tool ‘Captain Grey and the Greedy Aliens’; to investigate the sensitivity of the assessment across the age ranges; to investigate the inter-rater reliability and clinical utility of the assessment; and...

“Exegetical Education": Overcoming Obstacles in a Collaborative Journey Toward Meaning
(2015)
Holton, Michael
Abstract:

A practical problem often arises in gospel doctrine classes since the scriptural text is often bypassed in favour of thematic discussions. The use of exegesis might overcome this problem by reinstating the text as a genuine source of meaning. Indeed, exegetical education (EE) could aid in understanding and using the text. Practical action research was employed in a small-scale study to explore these claims. Interviews held with three teachers explored their practice of exegetical forms of instruction. EE was formalised during a pilot stage. A reflective journal was kept during a further implementation of EE in specific gospel doctrine classes. Finally, a focus group interview was held with students to explore their experience of EE as implemented. The data obtained was analysed using network analysis. The findings support the claim that EE contributes to the relevance of the text in classroom discussions. These findings paint a metaphorical picture of EE as involving a jour...

Abstract:

Irish Pubs Global is spearheaded by Irish entrepreneur Enda O’Coineen it is the global network linking the owners and managers of Irish Pubs. It contains 20 chapters worldwide and a database of more than 4,000 Irish Pubs. The Gathering event which started on September 29th was also supported by the Licensed Vintners Association and the Vintners Federation of Ireland. The three day programme focused on the ‘Next Generation of Irish Pubs’. A special feature of the Irish Pubs Global Gathering Event was the Beam Cocktail Challenge which took place on Monday 30th September 2013, this initiative between the DIT Bar Management Studies, Irish Pubs Global and Beam brought together DIT students in a unique cocktail challenge for all the delegates from over 22 countries.

Prizes were awarded for three best original cocktail recipes based on Kilbeggan Irish whiskey. 1/f noise in the half-metallic oxides CrO2, Fe3O4, and La2/3Sr1/3MnO3
(1999)
COEY, JOHN MICHAEL DAVID
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The excess low-frequency (1/f) electrical noise of three representative half-metallic oxides, CrO2, Fe3O4, and La2/3Sr1/3MnO3, has been studied as a function of the temperature (5?300 K) and a magnetic field (up to 12 T). In CrO2 and La2/3Sr1/3MnO3, the resistance fluctuations are investigated in the metallic regime, below Tc. The magnetite noise is measured across the Verwey transition, in the hopping regime. We find, in all these oxides, a high normalized noise level which roughly follows the temperature dependence of the resistivity. For CrO2 and La2/3Sr1/3MnO3, the form of the density of state of the responsible excitations is inferred. Oxygen displacement around grain boundaries, magnetic fluctuations, and reversed-spin electronic excitations in the band structure are discussed as possible explanations of the low-frequency fluctuations. For Fe3O4, the 1/f noise and its temperature dependence are attributed to fluctuations of the number of carriers in a critica...

Abstract:
A Descriptive Case Study to explore the use of Projective Techniques in the group Dramatherapy setting with women exploring their Suicidal Ideation and Depression. Author: Padraig J. Contact: (01) 8963006, (086) 0456822 or email padraig.dunne@tcd.ie Aim: To explore specific projective techniques used in the Dramatherapy setting and how these techniques may benefit women suffering from depression and suicidal ideation. Background: During therapy with these women anecdotal evidence began to emerge that projective techniques within the Dramatherapy sessions were beneficial for these women to aid the expression of their thoughts and feelings in relation to their depression and suicidal ideation. Following an extensive literature review it became obvious that little existed to support this argument especially within the health care setting. The study was embarked on to bridge the gap in ...

The Quantification of Tissue Sodium Concentration using 23Na-Magnetic Resonance Microscopy at 7 T: Probing the Acute Stroke Phase
(2010)
WETTERLING, FRIEDRICH; FAGAN, ANDREW
Abstract:
Accurate identification of the potentially salvageable ischaemic penumbra is critical in identifying stroke patients who will benefit from thrombolysis and in designing future clinical trials of potential neuroprotectants. The perfusion/diffusion mismatch technique, currently used to detect penumbra is an indirect measure, lacking precision. The ability to accurately quantify TSC in vivo could allow developing of a direct bio-marker for tissue viability in stroke [1]. However, quantitative 23Na-Magnetic Resonance Microscopy (qNa-MRM) of the rat brain is challenging due to the low SNR measured in the MRM images, which results from the 23Na nucleus?s low in vivo concentration, low gyromagnetic ratio, fast transversal signal decay, and the required small voxel size (< 4 ?l).

Managing Policies for Dynamic Spectrum Access
(2006)

Abstract:
The advent of software radio technology and the resulting potential for dynamic access to the radio spectrum presents major new challenges in managing that access. These challenges arise from the likely spread of spectrum access decision-making authority well beyond existing regulatory authorities to a wide variety of co-existing market-based or open-access schemes. Policy-based management mechanisms are proposed as a flexible means for defining the rules that determine spectrum allocation dynamically. However, many existing policy based mechanisms rely on a fixed organisation structure and so are insufficiently flexible to support combinations of central allocation, market mechanisms and commons usage. In this paper we present the application of a novel policy-based management mechanism based on self-managing communities to the management of policy authoring authority. We show how an existing implementation could be used to manage a software-based radio system and how this approach...
