Antioxidant Capacity and Polyphenol Content of Brown Seaweeds after Heat Processing
(2011)
Rajauria, Gaurav; Gupta, Shilpi; Abu-ghannam, Nissreen; Kumar, Amit
Abstract:
Seaweeds or marine macroalgae are renewable living resources which are also used as food, feed and fertilizer in many parts of the world. They are able to produce a great variety of secondary metabolites characterized by a broad spectrum of biological behavior such as antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The effect of heat treatment was investigated on the level of bioactive compounds and changes in the overall antioxidant capacity of edible Irish brown seaweeds namely Himanthalia elongata, Laminaria saccharina and Laminaria digitata. In order to make the seaweeds safe and edible, they were heated at 85, 95, 100, 110 and 121°C for 15 min using an autoclave and the samples were extracted with 60% methanol. The total phenolic content (TPC), proanthocyanidin content (PC) and total radical scavenging capacity (RSC) against DPPH• increased as the heating temperature increased to 95°C. Heating at 95°C significantly increased (p<0.05) the TPC (1.6, 1.8 and 1.9-fold), PC (1.9, 2.0 a...

Abstract:
We describe a tool that enables users to record and visualise runtime behaviour of software applications developed in Java. The execution trace, stored in the form of an XML le is visualized using 3D call graphs that are an extension of the Cone Tree infor- mation visualisation technique. This tool gives the user the ability to create several call graph views from a program's execution trace, providing additional representations of the program execution to both novice and expert programmers for the purposes of program execution analysis.

Architectural models of ambient-PRISMA in channel ambient calculus
(2012)
Ali, Nour; Tuosto, Emilio
Abstract:
Ambient-PRISMA is an architectural approach for specifying aspect-oriented software architecture and generating code of distributed and mobile systems. Ambient-PRISMA lacks a precise semantics due to the fact that it is based only on a metamodel. In this paper, Ambient-PRISMA is mapped into a formal language called Channel Ambient Calculus, a process algebra for specifying mobile applications that provides channels and ambients as first-class citizens. We argue that the formalization in Channel Ambient Calculus is particularly wellsuited for modelling Ambient-PRISMA.

Architecture for Location Independent CORBA Environments
(1998)
CUNNINGHAM, RAYMOND
Abstract:
The construction of distributed applications is a complex and time consuming task, which has been addressed by the Object Management Group’s Common Object Request Broker Architecture. However implementations of this standard are typically designed for stationary hosts connected to a fixed network and do not take into account the problems associated with mobile computing. These problems include limited processing resources on the mobile host and the use of unreliable and low-bandwidth wireless networks. A full CORBA implementation is unsuitable for use on mobile hosts, such as laptops and personal digital assistants, since it is too resource intensive. It is however desirable for mobile hosts to be able to interopate with existing CORBA applications while simultaneously taking advantage of mobility. This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a collection of components suitable for building applications, which are capable of interoperating with CORBA implementations ...

Architecture for multi-party synchronization of data sets in a distributed environment
(2005)
Marczewski, Marcin
Abstract:
In the world of common mobility, where more and more people and organizations use various mobile equipment such as phones, personal data assistants and other devices the consistency of stored and exchanged data is a very important thing. Today the flow of information, especially in business processes, can be very high and valuable, and deformation of this data is unacceptable because it can lead to numerous misunderstandings. The use of mobile devices and networked computers makes people want to have the same data on all these devices. In case where a large number of devices stores huge data sets which can be modified by hundreds of people, simple data copying is highly unprofitable and time-consuming. Nowadays, we can find a lot of various algorithms for set reconciliation designed for various environments, devices. These algorithms have a variety of advantages, but they also have a number of disadvantages which can limit their usefulness. In this work, a few existing data synchron...

Architecure is a social art form
(2011)
Cahill, Jeremiah
Abstract:
The spatial perspective of human society has become widely recognized as an influential force in shaping human behaviour and societal development. The design of our everyday spaces, which we interact directly and indirectly, impact on our social progress as a society and as individuals. As designers of the built environment we must understand the social standing of our work and its interaction with the people who use, inhabit or simply view it. I will hope to investigate and design this interaction between people and the built spaces on a social and physical level.

Artefact Books: Towards a Multi-field Analytical Framework for Literary Research
(2011)
Smith, Jennifer Dawn
Abstract:
While the most fundamental object of literary studies is often the codex, in this age of digital and electronic sensory inundation, it would seem that the physical book has a limited lifespan. However, the technologies continually vying to supersede the codex are instead enabling the development of different kinds of printed objects. Some of these new books transmit information in a unique way that cannot be replicated or replaced by other media such as television, the Internet, or even e-books. I have chosen the phrase "artefact book" to distinguish these works from traditional books and artists' books. The quality of the reading experience offered and demanded by artefact books is vital for paper publishing and concomitant literary studies in the face of digital and multimedia competition. The problematic ontology of artists' books has prevented both literary and artistic discourses from embracing them wholeheartedly. In essence, artefact books are those whose ...

Aspect-Based Properties
(2008)
Lafferty, Donal
Abstract:
Component frameworks are said to support contextual composition when crosscutting functionality is bound to component instances by declarative selection of context properties, rather than through direct connections, such as method invocation, or derivation mechanisms, such as inheritance. Using contextual composition, component framework services such as synchronization, security and transaction support are bound to component instances via method interception. Here, the term component instance is an abstraction for whatever unit of interaction is used to access software component functionality be it an interface, an object or a set of objects. The mechanism for declarative selection can range from deployment descriptors, used with EJB Containers, to attribute-based annotations to source, used with CLR contexts of the .NET Framework. Contextual composition frameworks suffer from the lack of tailorability problem as well as the preplanning problem. Contextual composition is employed i...

AspectC#: An AOSD implementation for C#
(2002)
Kim, Howard
Abstract:
A major problem with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) is that it cannot deal efficiently with crosscutting concerns. Aspect Oriented Software Development (AOSD) is a new methodology that tries to enable the extension of the separation of concerns capabilities in software development. AOSD, which encompasses Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP), hopes to enable the developer or architect to capture crosscutting concerns in a modular fashion. The objectives of the dissertation include the design, implementation and evaluation of a tool that enables the modularisation of crosscutting concerns within C#, that we have called “AspectC#”. AspectC# must: 1. Allow the developer to use AOP constructs within C#. 2. Make no explicit language extensions to C#. 3. Be extensible for future development. AspectC# hopes to enable the developer to modularise crosscutting concerns within C#. By modularising crosscutting concerns this will lead to an easier development and maintenance of applications. The...

Assessing the role of open source software in the European secondary software sector: a voice from industry
(2012)
Agerfalk, Par J.; Deverell, Andrea; Fitzgerald, Brian; Morgan, Lorraine
Abstract:
This paper addresses the open source software (OSS) phenomenon from an industry perspective and reveals a number of complexities surrounding the role of OSS in the secondary software sector. It presents the research results of an international workshop which was hosted with the explicit intention of extracting the voice of key industrial stakeholders. The data was gathered and analysed using a qualitative approach which revealed the key strengths and weaknesses of OSS from an industrial perspective. This formed the foundations for developing a framework describing the emerging commercial incarnation of OSS (we refer to this as Open Source Software, Inc.) The paper concludes that the European secondary software sector recognise the benefits of leveraging OSS but are aware of key issues pertinent to such an end.

Assisting concept assignment using probabilistic classification and cognitive mapping
(2012)
Cleary, Brendan; Exton, Chris
Abstract:
The problem of concept assignment, that is, the problem of mapping human oriented concepts to elements in the code base of a system under study, and approaches which facilitate concept assignment can be considered as central to assisting software engineers in comprehending the unfamiliar systems they encounter. This paper presents a technique called cognitive assignment that attempts to capture what expert engineers know about the systems they work with and uses that information to generate classifiers that are used to implement a ranked search over a set of software elements.

Association between dopamine transporter (DAT1) genotype, left-sided inattention, and an enhanced response to methylphenidate in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
(2005)
ROBERTSON, IAN
Abstract:
A polymorphism of the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1, 10-repeat) is associated with ADHD and has been linked to an enhanced response to methylphenidate (MPH). One aspect of the attention deficit in ADHD includes a subtle inattention to left space, resembling that seen after right cerebral hemisphere damage. Since left-sided inattention in ADHD may resolve when treated with MPH, we asked whether leftsided inattention in ADHD was related to DAT1 genotype and the therapeutic efficacy of MPH. Forty-three ADHD children and their parents were genotyped for the DAT1 3’ VNTR polymorphism. The children performed the Landmark Test, a well-validated measure yielding a spatial attentional asymmetry index (leftward to rightward attentional bias). Parents rated their child’s response to MPH retrospectively using a three-point scale (No, Mediocre or Very Good Response). Additionally, parents used a symptom checklist to rate behaviour while on and off medication. A within family control design det...
