Abstract:
The purpose of this booklet is to offer general information about Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias, and to highlight their early signs and symptoms. It offers a number of tools that can be helpful in establishing whether you or someone you care for is experiencing memory problems, and there is a diary at the back of this book to help track and record various changes that you or the person you love maybe experiencing. This booklet also contains details of what steps to take next if you are concerned about someone, how a diagnosis is made, what to do if you or someone close is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and outlines the various treatments that are available. Understanding Alzheimer's Disease also focuses on the importance of the role of the carer, explains carer stress, and offers some useful suggestions for reducing the stress that can build up when caring for someone full-time.

Your views of mental health inpatient services inpatient survey 2011
(2012)
Mental Health Commission (MHC); The Irish Society for Quality and Safety in Healthcare (ISQSH); The University of Ulster (UU)
Abstract:
This report presents the findings of ‘Your Views of Mental Health Inpatient Services’ a survey undertaken in 2011 which examined 710 service users’ experiences of their recent stay across 28 approved centres1. The key findings are set out below and have been categorised under six of the eight themes from the ‘Quality Framework for Mental Health Services in Ireland’ (Mental Health Commission, 2007a). An overall evaluation theme has also been included, which details overall satisfaction with the service and the respondent’s health status post-discharge.

Zebra Mussels in Ireland
(1998)
Minchin, D; Moriarty, C
Abstract:
The zebra mussel was reported for the first time in Ireland during 1997. It may have been introduced during or before, 1994. Information, based on eye-witness accounts from 1995 and the age structure of zebra mussels sampled during October and November 1997, suggests they first became established in the region between southern Lough Derg and Limerick Docks. The species expanded its range during 1996 to include most of Lough Derg and by 1997 had settled in the remaining north-eastern region of the lake. The mussels could have reached Ireland in several ways. The most likely vectors are boats carried on trailers directly from Britain, and one recently imported barge carrying live mussels was found. There may have been a number of introductions. It is possible that some arrived in ballast water from shipping in Limerick Docks. Mussels foul a wide range of structures and easily settle on firm surfaces, including water supply pipes. For this reason their presence is of serious concern to...

Zoonosis: Disease from Animals
(2007)
Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)
Abstract:
DISEASE FROM FARM ANIMALS Farmers, vets and others who work with animals or their products are at a higher risk of contracting certain diseases from animals than the general population. Infectious diseases that can be contacted from animals are called zoonoses. Even healthy animals can transmit zoonoses to people either directly or indirectly. Many of the diseases listed below do not usually cause serious illness in healthy adults, however, they can be extremely serious in certain groups of people including: • very young and elderly people • people with suppressed immune systems • pregnant women. Common diseases that can be transferred from animals to humans include: • Salmonella • Campylobacter • Verocytotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC), including E.coli O157 • Listeria • Toxoplasmosis, Leptospirosis, Q Fever, Brucellosis, Cryptosporidiosis, Tuberculosis (TB).
