Abstract:
Over the past ten years, a number of major scholarly projects based in Ireland have sought by original research to make visible women’s contribution to culture and society, and have focused critical attention on the importance of feminist research for the field of Irish Studies.1 As part of the Irish Women’s Movement Project at NUI Cork, we analysed the wealth of documentary material available relating to the Irish women’s movement in the 1970s and 80s.2 Intrinsic to the activism and writing which went on within these feminist groups, as well as in related activist projects of the period (such as the lesbian and gay rights movement) was the opening up of social and cultural discourses relating to gender identities and sexualities. Implicit in the cultural and social work of the 1970s and 80s was the assumption that the contemporary generation of activists were the first to explore these taboo areas in their work and their writing. However, as a result of the kind of work ongoing in ...

Abstract:
In a country where traditional or ethno-medical practices prevailed well into the twentieth century, the interface between the wider populace and ‘modern medicine’1 was complicated by undercurrents of class, cultural difference, a mixed medical economy and, perhaps more significantly, denominational concerns. With the exception of Gerard Fealy’s work on the history of nursing,2 much discussion on the social history of medicalization in the Irish context has focused on doctors; the function of nurses in that process has received relatively little attention. Even the activity of nursing orders in Ireland remains under-explored, as most discussions form part of wider studies of female religious.

Abstract:

'A French Homer in America: James Joyce, Henri Matisse and George Macy’s Limited Editions Club "Ulysses"'
(2021)
Crispi, Luca
Abstract:
On 6 December 1933, Judge John M. Woolsey of the Southern District Court of New York determined that Ulysses was not obscene and thus could be lawfully imported into the United States. By the end of the following month, Bennett Cerf, co-founder of Random House, had published the first authorized edition of James Joyce’s book in America. Then, on 22 October 1935, George Macy, the visionary director of the Limited Editions Club (LEC) in New York, a subscription-based fine arts book press, published his Ulysses with illustrations by Henri Matisse. Given its limited availability and cost—then and now—most people have never seen this monumental deluxe edition of Ulysses, and so very few people have actually tried to read it, but that is probably beside the point. The LEC Ulysses is one of the most iconic modernist books ever produced and it presented an avant-garde reimagining of Homer’s Odyssey in text and images for an American readership that may not have been quite prepared for it.

'Authenticity 2.0': Reconceptualising 'authenticity' in the digital era
(2017)
Mishan, Freda
Abstract:
As language use today moves increasingly into digital fora - social media, social networking and so on, accompanied by an internationalisation of English, the language most associated with the Internet, the concept of 'authenticity' becomes ever more evasive. In this chapter, it will be suggested that one route for achieving authenticity in today’s language learning environment can be found, ironically perhaps, in the work of pre-digital theorists such as Van Lier (e.g. 1996). Van Lier maintained that authenticity was not intrinsic to learning materials themselves but was a factor of the learners' engagement with them and of the tasks enacted with them. In this chapter, I will demonstrate that this conception of authenticity is a perfect fit for the digital era, where more and more of the language use is in interaction on a plethora of different media and applications. I will argue therefore that it is to interaction – and its pedagogical realization ‘task’ - that we ...

'Disencumbering our crowded places': theory and practice of estate emigration schemes in mid-nineteenth century Ireland
(2004)
Duffy, Patrick J.
Abstract:
The schemes of assisted emigration which were adopted by private owners of landed estates in Ireland in the middle decades of the nineteenth century grew out of a discourse of political economy which was heavily influenced by the ideas on overpopulation of Thomas Malthus and his disciples. Many of their arguments which were rehearsed in the 1820s debates on emigration, echo through the correspondence on estate emigration in the mid nineteenth century.

Abstract:

Abstract:
On 4 August 1914 Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary, reportedly stood in front of his office window looking out onto the dawn of St James Park as the street lamps were being extinguished and famously declared: 'The Lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime'. 4 August was the day the British declared war on Germany. His eerily prophetic statement came to represent the devastation of two world wars and the horrendous interwar period that followed.

'He just wasn't the bloke I used to know': Social capital and the fragmentation of a British organised crime network
(2018)
Windle, James
Abstract:
To the author's best knowledge there have been few empirical studies on the fragmentation of organised crime groups.1 This is not surprising when you consider that the internal dynamics of co-offending groups are largely hidden from official records and, while studies on organised crime employing direct observations and interviews are valuable, recruitment of willing participants can be difficult. Such studies can be also expensive, time consuming, potentially risky, and present ethical barriers. As argued in the introduction to this volume, historical sources can provide an important alternative to these traditional social science methods. This chapter employs (auto)biographies as an historical source to investigate the formation and fragmentation of an organised crime network operational in Essex and London between the late-1980s and 1995. The overlapping sociological theories of trust and social capital are used to guide analysis of the historical data. It is suggested that ...

'I should have some deer, but I don't remember how many': Confused Ownership Of Reindeer in Chukotka, Russia
(2012)
Gray, Patty A.
Abstract:
As the title of this chapter implies, I seek to highlight the perspective of individual reindeer herders with regard to issues of ownership of the reindeer in their midst. If multiple, overlapping claims to reindeer are m be found in Chukotka3 they are less likely to occur among the herders themselves than between the herders and the state. In the former Soviet Union as well as in post-Soviet Russia, reindeer herders in Chukotka have competed with state agencies for ownership and control of individual reindeer, and have come out the losers.

'I wish, I wish...': mobility, immobility and the global ‘imaginings’ of Nigerian transnational children
(2014)
Veale, Angela; Andres, Camilla
Abstract:
Transnational migration characterised by temporary or ongoing border-crossings has been hailed as a means by which migrants can creatively sustain the economic life of their families while establishing connections and social networks in different nation states (Vertovec, 2007). Yet Al-Ali and Koser (2002) caution that transnational mobility is not equally accessible to all migrants; gender relations, household structures, legal status and access to entitlements can all act as barriers to migrant mobility. While the transnational migration literature emphasises connected social networks across bi-national locations, it has insufficiently captured the ‘stuckness’ experienced by many African transnational migrants once they reach Europe and that of their children back home. The differently-situated position of children with respect to transnational mobility is under-researched in the academic literature. While the children of the global elite can move with relative ease (Nette and Hayd...

Abstract:
The aim of this publication is to present how Open Educational Resources (OERs) are being strongly promoted at all levels of education. This book presents a select number of case studies from contributors to the Irish National Digital Learning Resources (NDLR) service. The scarcity of inside views of real Irish classrooms and especially the dearth of video-based resources that depict these, coupled with increased expectations for teacher education providers to work together (DES 2011), were among the considerations that motivated and shaped the development of the project described in this chapter. Video Ideas in Teaching and Learning Languages (VITALL) is a collaboration between the Education Department in NUI Maynooth, the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) and the Post-Primary Languages Initiative (PPLI). It seeks to address, in one initiative, our shared concerns in relation to the production and use of resources to support the professional development of secon...

'Insiders', 'Outsiders', and the Geography of Regional Life
(2019)
Buttimer, Anne
Abstract:
Two distinct connotations of term ‘region’ have generated two distinct and often separate fields of endeavour within geography. Traditional regional geography has focused on the description of areally-circumscribed territories, while regional science (in the Anglo-American world) has tended to be more analytical and more specifically concerned with nodally-organized functional regions. Two contrasting definitions of space and time are implicit here – the former derives from a Newtonian notion of space and time as containers of objects while the latter derives from a relational notion of space-time as topological surface. For a number of sociological and ideological reasons, however, both share a perspective on knowledge and experience which could be regarded as an ‘outsider’ one. The ‘insider’s’ perspective has not received much explicit attention, largely because of difficulties in generalization and a fear of ‘subjectivism’. Arguments are raised to support the view that the g...
