Zero-pad Effects on Conditional Simulation and Application of Spatially-varying Earthquake Motions
(2012)

Abstract:
Realistic simulated ground motion are required for testing heath monitoring algorithms in connection with seismic excitations. To this end spatially-varying ground motions are important for long span structures such as bridges and pipelines. In conditional simulation of spatially-varying earthquake motions, a single earthquake motion time history at a site is known and a parametric coherency model is given. Spatially-varying earthquake motions at other sites are then simulated. To facilitate the use of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), dummy zero points must be added to the front and/or the end of the data. Investigating effects of zero-pad is important for simulating ground motions to be used for testing health monitoring techniques. However, neither comparison of zero-padded filtered data with non-zero pad filtered data nor explanation for effects of zero pads have been reported. The zero-pad effects on FFT of the input motion and also on the simulated motions are examined in this...

Zero is not a Four Letter Word: Studies in the Evolution of Language

Abstract:
We examine a model genetic system that has features of both genetic programming and genetic regulatory networks, to show how various forms of degeneracy in the genotype-phenotype map can induce complex and subtle behaviour in the dynamics that lead to enhanced evolutionary robustness and can be fruitfully described in terms of an elementary algorithmic 'language'.

Abstract:
With the increasing use of mobile devices as personal record- ing, communication and sensing tools, extracting the seman- tics of life activities through sensed data (photos, accelerom- eter, GPS etc.) is gaining widespread public awareness. A person who engages in long-term personal sensing is engag- ing in a process of lifelogging. Lifelogging typically involves using a range of (wearable) sensors to capture raw data, to segment into discrete activities, to annotate and subse- quently to make accessible by search or browsing tools. In this paper, we present an intuitive lifelog activity record- ing and management system called ZhiWo. By using a su- pervised machine learning approach, sensed data collected by mobile devices are automatically classified into different types of daily human activities and these activities are inter- preted as life activity retrieval units for personal archives.

γ-Radiation dosimetry using screen printed nickel oxide thick films
(2002)

Abstract:
Thick films of Nickel oxide (NiO) were investigated for γ-radiation dosimetry purposes. Samples were fabricated using the thick film screen printing technique. Absorption spectra for NiO films were recorded and the values of the optical band gap for as-printed, irradiated and annealed films were calculated. It was found that the optical band gap value decreased as the radiation dose was increased. Samples with an Ag-NiO-Ag sandwich structure were exposed to a 60Co γ-radiation source at a dose rate of 6 Gy/min. The relative change in current increased linearly with increased dosage up to 720 Gy. The I-V characteristics indicated a Poole-Frenkel conduction mechanism. It was found that annealing restored both the electrical and the optical properties of the samples.
