Using stigmergy to co-ordinate pervasive computing environments.
(2004)
Cahill, Vinny; Barron, Peter
Abstract:
Pervasive computing environments have proven difficult to develop in a form that supports the integration and organisation of devices and applications in a spontaneous and transparent manner. This is partly due to the highly dynamic and unpredictable nature of these types of environments, and is often further hampered by the limited resources found on devices. In this paper we present a highly decentralized method of organising the components of a pervasive computing environment, supporting spontaneous interaction between entities and providing robust systemwide behavior. Our inspiration for this work stems from nature and the observations made by the French biologist Grasse on how social insects co-ordinate their actions using indirect communication via the environment, a phenomenon that has become known as stigmergy. In the stigmergic approach there are fewer dependences between entities allowing for the incremental construction and improvement of solutions without adversely effec...

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Nowadays the grid community is facing complex challenges. Among them three are particularly interesting: the existence of many different grid middlewares; the increasing complexity of the submitted jobs; and the many different ways in which actors and resources can be arranged. In this paper we propose a combined solution to these problems which is based on the union of two concepts: a metagrid concept that tackles the issues posed by the variety of different middlewares and the complexity of jobs, and a concept of Social Grid Agents that tackles the issue of resource sharing and allocation.

Nonlinear vibro-acoustic behaviour in a circular membrane oscillator
(2009)
BENNETT, GARETH
Abstract:
Oscillating systems that produce noise at a frequency of excitation may have as an abatement solution the increase of the frequency of excitation to above the audible frequency limit, viz. 20kHz. This approach may not be possible for systems subject to non-linear behavior as subharmonics can be generated within the audible range. This paper describes the analysis of a small metal annulus over which a thin membrane is stretched. The membrane is indirectly excited via a piezoelectric transducer attached to the annulus and has an application as an appliance in the electronics sector. The generation of noise is unwanted but found to occur occasionally. The analysis confirms the non-linear behaviour of the system with sub-harmonics resulting from a non-linear interaction with a low natural frequency. An experimental technique using a 2-D Scanning Laser Vibrometer (Polytec PSV-400) allows the vibrational modes of the annulus and membrane to be measured as a function of frequency and prese...

Composing Multi-View Aspect Models
(2008)
CLARKE, SIOBHAN
Abstract:
Large models for complex systems can be decomposed in separate pieces corresponding to different perspectives on the system. This decomposition allows the modeller to check properties locally on some aspects of the system before considering the global complexity of the model. In this paper we consider two types of decomposition: according to the concerns identified in the requirements and according to structural and behavioural perspectives. Once the separate models are available and have been checked separately, they have to be composed to check global properties. In this work, we propose automatic composition operators for symmetric and asymmetric concern models, each concern being modelled from a structural and behavioural point of view.

Abstract:
This paper examines the feasibility of using ontologies to model generic sensor networks, based on the capabilities of the current generation of ontology tools. The creation of such an ontology, the current tool?s capacity to adequately maintain it, and its potential functionality, as part of a larger semantic system are addressed here. These topics were addressed by constructing a generic sensor ontology and attempting to implement it as part of a larger semantic system. The process and the conclusions drawn from it are described below.

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Security is a critical factor in interoperability of grid middleware. There is an opportunity to automate the trust evaluation and accreditation process for grid certification authorities to allow continuous evaluation of their policies and practices. To assess the feasibility and usefulness of automatic evaluation of trust in CAs a trust evaluation system has been designed and a prototype implemented. The service will evaluate a CA based on its published policies and observed practices with respect to a set of rules based on the requirements from an authentication profile. Development and testing are ongoing and we hope to deploy a pilot system shortly.

Case studies used in construction to achieve specific learning outcomes: The case of the embankments constructed for the approach to Limerick Tunnel, Ireland

ORR, TREVOR
Abstract:
This paper gives an example of a case study written for instructional purposes, in order to support the achievement of specific learning outcomes which include (i) identifying modes of failure and (ii) selecting appropriate soil parameter types and values. Case writing was based primarily on information from a detailed publicly available article, supplemented with additional input from one author of this article. The case narrative is accompanied by annotated calculations, which follow the general design philosophy of the project. The case focuses on two of the main issues for the geotechnical design of the highway embankments close to the Limerick Tunnel, which are founded on very soft organic fine grained material. First, secondary compression, which is sizeable for this highway project, required surcharging to reduce the rate of long-term settlement. Second, the low undrained shear strength and high compressibility of the foundation material required construction of the embankmen...

Trust Management in Online Social Networks
(2007)
FU, BO; O'SULLIVAN, DECLAN
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The concept of trust has been studied significantly by researchers in philosophy, psychology and sociology; research in these fields show that trust is a subjective view that varies greatly among people, situations and environments. This very subjective characteristic of trust however, has been largely overlooked within trust management used in the online social network (OSN) scenario. To date, trust management mechanisms in OSNs have been limited to access control methods that take a very simplified view of trust and ignore various fundamental characteristics of trust. Hence they fail to provide a personalized manner to manage trust but rather provide a ?one size fits all? style of management. In this paper we present findings which indicate that trust management for OSNs needs to be modified and enriched and outline the main issues that are being addressed in our current implementation work.

Abstract:
The authors demonstrate the generation of transforms limited short optical pulses, which display excellent spectral and temporal qualities by employing a novel technology, based on an externally injected gain-switched laser in conjunction with a non-linearly chirped grating. Using this technique, 3.5 ps optical pulses, exhibiting a time bandwidth product of 0.45, are generated, which are suitable for use in high-speed 80 Gb/s OTDM communications systems.

Abstract:
<p>80:80 was developed against the background of a changing work environment. Advances in technology meant that work became mobile, the breaking down of walls and cubicles created large open spaces allowing for a movement towards collaborative work and “New Ways of Working”.</p> <p>80:80 is an office furniture system designed in this context, to provide a foundation for new, flexible ways of working. In particular, the delineators that define territory, such as legs, vertical supports, fixed side screens, were removed or minimised to create an uninterrupted worksurface span, allowing for a flexible space where users can annex as much space as the task in hand requires. The intention was to create a simple, flexible platform for modern work in its many forms and to reduce the desk back to its most simple and useful form- the table. 80:80 does not tell you where to sit, that does not impose upon you how to work but is a blank canvas that facilitates flexible working...

Abstract:
The traffic flow at an arterial intersection in a congested urban transportation network in the city of Dublin is modelled in this paper. Three different time-series models, viz. random walk model, Holt-Winters? exponential smoothing technique and seasonal ARIMA model are used for modeling of traffic flow in Dublin. Simulation and short-term forecasting of univariate traffic flow data are done using these models. The data used for modeling are obtained from loop-detectors at a certain junction in the city center of Dublin. Seasonal ARIMA and Holt-Winters? exponential smoothing technique give highly competitive forecasts and match considerably well with the observed traffic flow data during rush hours.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a survey which was conducted on an Irish Rail service to ascertain how the value of travel time may change if individuals could partake in another activity while travelling. The survey included a stated preference section which uses a multinomial logit (MNL) model to estimate the benefits individuals would derive from having access to the internet while they travel on public transport. In the survey, respondents were asked would they rather have wi-fi internet access throughout the train or in segregated wi-fi carriage. The results from this study show that multi-tasking while travelling by rail is extremely common, with the majority of respondents participating in two or more activities. The most frequent form of multi-tasking was the use of a mobile phone. This study examined the potential for wi-fi internet access while travelling by public transport. The results found that approximately two thirds of respondents said if wi-fi internet access...

Examining the Optimal Fuel Type for Urban Bus Operations
(2010)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN
Abstract:
Public service fleets offer an attractive option for introducing renewable fuels and alternative technologies on a large scale, which allow for the reduction of both greenhouse gas emissions and exhaust air pollutants. This paper ex amines the use of biomethane (bio-CNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) for part of the bus fleet in Dublin. Dublin is typical of many international urban centres with a large bus fleet; therefore the results detailed in this paper could be applied to other urban bus fleets. The emissions produced from the 2008 fleet based at one of the city?s seven bus depots were compared to use of new diesel and bio-CNG buses, which were modelled using COPERT 4, a road transport emissions model developed by the European Commission. The optimum feedstock for bio-CNG production in Ireland was investigated, as well as the quantity of feedstock needed to produce t he required bio-CNG to fuel the bus fleet examined. The merits of producing bio-CNG in Ireland were analysed ...

Tree-based Analysis of Mesh Overlays for Peer-to-Peer Streaming
(2008)
MEIER, RENE
Abstract:
Mesh-based P2P streaming approaches have been recently proposed as an interesting alternative to tree-based approaches. However, many properties of mesh overlays remain little understood as they are difficult to study due to the lack of a predefined structure. In this paper we show that when data is streamed through mesh overlays, it follows tree-based diffusion patterns and thereby mesh-based streaming can be studied in a similar manner to tree-based approaches. We identify properties of the diffusion trees that emerge in mesh overlays and compare them to optimal diffusion trees. We show that the emerging diffusion trees exhibit suboptimal height and are unbalanced, which results in increased buffering delay of mesh-based P2P systems, particularly in heterogeneous environments. We present an algorithm that adapts the mesh overlay to shorten diffusion trees and to reduce the buffering delay.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the challenge of multi-policy optimization in decentralized autonomic systems. We evaluate several multi-policy reinforcement learning-based optimization techniques in an urban traffic control simulation, a canonical example of a decentralized autonomic system. Our results indicate that W-learning, which learns separately for each policy and then selects between nominated actions based on current action importance, is a suitable approach for optimization towards multiple policies on non-collaborating agents in heterogeneous autonomic environments.

Behaviour and Properties of Lime-Pozzolan Pastes
(2010)
PAVIA, SARA; WALKER, ROSANNE
Abstract:
Lime pozzolan mortars have been used by numerous ancient civilizations of builders, and are now regaining popularity as environmental sustainable alternatives to cements for masonry and concrete applications. This paper studies the relationship between the composition and physical characteristics of nine pozzolans and their corresponding reactivity, water demand, setting times and mechanical properties in lime/pozzolan pastes. A diverse selection of artificial pozzolans were investigated including Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS); Leca; Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA); Calcined Clay (MetaStar); Microsilica (MS); Rice Husk Ash (RHA); Red Brick Dust (RBD); Tile and Yellow Brick Dust (YBD). Each pozzolan was found to have a particular water demand for a given workabililty that was related to the particle surface area. It was concluded that the pozzolan surface area has a much greater influence on the water demand of the paste than its particle size or the lime:pozzolan ratio. It ap...

Examining the Potential Impacts of Introducing a Cap and Share Scheme in Ireland
(2011)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN
Abstract:
A cap and share scheme is a policy whereby a cap or limit is placed on national carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and individuals are allocated an annual CO2 allowance. This paper examines some of the potential impacts of introducing a cap and share scheme in the transport sector in Ireland. The research presented in this paper focuses on travel-to-works trips specifically. CO2 emissions for these annual work trips are calculated and a cap is determined based on these results. Two caps are examined one based on average emissions and one set at a 20% reduction in average emissions as per Ireland?s reduction targets. A national and Dublin only cap are examined and the results are presented as a means of comparison. Binary logistic models are used to determine the socio-economic characteristics of individuals who fall above and below the cap. The results demonstrate the importance of car ownership, journey distance, mode choice and household composition in determining whether a commuter i...

Identifying the Characteristics of Households with Multiple Car Ownership
(2011)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN
Abstract:
This paper examines the characteristics of households with multiple car ownership in Dublin, Ireland. Data from the 2006 Census of Ireland are analysed to ascertain the characteristics of these households. The analysis of multiple car ownership presented herein examines individual specific, transport availability, and household characteristics to provide an indication of the individuals most likely to have access to more than one vehicle. The analysis of multiple car ownership presented in this paper examines both individual specific characteristics and household characteristics to provide an indication of the individuals most likely to have access to more than one vehicle. Understanding the characteristics of households with more than one car is important for many reasons. Ireland, like many countries has recently launched a number of electric vehicle and car sharing schemes. Traditionally these schemes have been aimed at reducing multiple car ownership, therefore it?s important to...

Measuring the Transport Patterns of Those Living in Deprived Areas in Dublin, Ireland
(2012)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN
Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between social deprivation and travel patterns . Many studies ha ve examined the relationsh ip between deprivation and travel patterns , but few have compared those in the most disadvantaged areas with those living in the most affluent areas. This study examines the impact that deprivation has upon individuals? trip patte rns , in Dublin, using 2006 Census of I reland data. A number of maps were created to determine the patterns of deprived areas in the city relative to a number of trip chara cteristics. A multinomial logistic regression model wa s estimated in this study to determine how the level of deprivation impacts upon a number of characteristics such as mode choice, annual emissions, cost of transport and car ownership. The main findings of this study are that those individuals living in deprived areas in Dublin are m ore likely to use sustainable modes of transport compared to individuals living in the more affluent areas of the city.

Analysing the usage of a segregated interurban cycleway (Greenway) in Ireland
(2012)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN
Abstract:
This paper analyses the usage of a pilot greenway in a rural environment in Ireland. The path is 42 km long and has several settlements and schools located along the route. A survey was conducted in five schools along the route, to determine the usage of the greenway by students and staff in the schools. This enabled observations to be made in relation to the usage of the greenway. Usage of the path is established by means of counters located along the route. Average hourly day profiles of usage along the path were created for different scenarios. This allowed the differences in usage to be examined. The impact of national and public holidays was also observed. Usage patterns are also analysed in relation to a number of weather variables. The relationships are determined by means of regression analysis. The cost of construction of the path is known and therefore by establishing the user numbers the cost per trip can be calculated. The average spend of a tourist in Ireland is known, ...
