Abstract:
All processes of life are dominated by networks of interacting biochemical components. The purpose of modeling these networks is manifold. From a theoretical point of view it allows the exploration of network structures and dynamics, to find emergent properties or to explain the organization and evolution of networks. From a practical point of view, in silico experiments can be performed that would be very expensive or impossible to achieve in the laboratory, such as hypothesis-testing with regard to knockout experiments or overexpression, or checking the validity of a proposed molecular mechanism. The literature on modeling biochemical networks is growing rapidly and the motivations behind different modeling techniques are sometimes quite distant from each other. To clarify the current context, we present a systematic overview of the different philosophies to model biochemical networks. We put particular emphasis on three main domains which have been playing a major role in the pa...

A Multilayered Uncertainty Model for Context Aware Systems,

McKeever, Susan; Ye, Juan; Coyle, Lorcan; Dobson, Simon
Abstract:
Context-aware systems typically use data sensed from the environment to drive adaptive behaviour. Sensed data is inherently imprecise and uncertain: in addition, new uncertainties are introduced when sensed data is fused with other data to infer context at the more abstract level of situations. We present an uncertainty model which aggregates context uncertainty and provides mechanisms to capture uncertainty at situation level. We demonstrate the application of the model in a sample scenario using an experimental data set

A multistage hierarchical algorithm for hand shape recognition
(2009)
Farouk , Moahmed; Sutherland, Alistair; Shoukry, Amin A.
Abstract:
This paper represents a multistage hierarchical algorithm for hand shape recognition using principal component analysis (PCA) as a dimensionality reduction and a feature extraction method. The paper discusses the effect of image blurring to build data manifolds using PCA and the different ways to construct these manifolds. In_order to classify the hand shape of an incoming sign object and to be invariant to linear transformations like translation and rotation, a multistage hierarchical classifier structure is used. Computer generated images for different Irish Sign Language shapes are used in testing. Experimental results are given to show the accuracy and performance of the proposed algorithm.

A Narratives’ Exploration of Non-traditional International Assignees Locally Resident and Employed in the South of France
(2008)
Crowley-Henry, Marian
Abstract:
<p>Contemporary publications in international human resource management call for the pluralisation of international assignees beyond the widely described expatriate. This paper presents an under-explored category of international assignees: highly educated, non French, Western (first world) individuals who reside indefinitely in the South of France, maintaining their professional careers while resident in the host country. A sample of over thirty individuals meeting these criteria was interviewed in France in depth over a three year period. These individuals are not migrants as by their own descriptions they consider migrants to have to move internationally (economic migrants) while their decisions to move to and remain in the South of France are extra-economically and more lifestyle anchor related. Rather, they would describe themselves as ‘an English-, Irish-, American- etc. man/woman living in France’. The narratives collected from the sample are analysed int...

A New Architecture for a Multi Polarized Perpendicularly-fed Radiating Element
(2005)
Herscovici, Naftali; Lerma, Francisco; Ammann, Max
Abstract:
<p>Planar printed antennas are often required to be fed by parallel feed-networks, which, when printed on the same substrate as the radiating elements, create mutual coupling, spurious radiation and excite surface waves. This considerably affects the array efficiency. Numerous architectures were proposed in the past; some of them use the multilayer structure (which by itself exhibits low efficiency), or perpendicularly fed structures. The latter consist of a substrate for the radiating element and another substrate which for the feed-network. The paper reviews some of the basic configurations proposed until now, and shows the specific improvements introduced by the proposed architecture.</p>

Abstract:
The paper presents detailed simulation based analysis and investigation on grid code compliance of a new configuration of a 2 MW doubly fed induction generator. The converters of DFIG are connected and controlled to function like a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). One of the converters is connected in series with the stator terminals and acts to maintain the stator voltage at a predetermined value. It can also transfer power to or from the rotor side converter through the common DC link. The other converter is connected to the rotor like a conventional DFIG and is controlled to maintain appropriate rotor currents to establish the operating point based on the input mechanical torque and reactive power set point at the grid connection. The generator performs satisfactorily under steady state and grid fault condition both in the super and sub synchronous speed range. The newly designed machine is Irish grid code compliant.

Abstract:
We propose a novel global motion estimation technique based on weighted gradient and displaced frame difference (DFD) associated with Wiener estimation. Then, we apply this technique to parse events of a high level of understanding in a cricket game. A user oriented analysis of the game then reveals a distinct connection between the global motion and specific events. By estimating global motion and analysing the temporal evolution of the estimated motion parameters, we present an effective process for the extraction of cricket events, leading to a success rate of 88.9%

Abstract:
<p>In academic literature, limited academic research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim is to conduct a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not e-Marketplaces have the potential to add value to procurement in the aviation industry. The research focuses on the potential of B2B e-Marketplaces in terms of improving an airline’s competitiveness in its procurement value chain. The theoretical framework adopted supports the identification of barriers to success and critical success factors.</p>

Abstract:
CO2 monitoring is important for many areas of high economic relevance, like environmental monitoring, control of biotechnological processes in bio-pharmaceutical industries, and the food industry, particularly controlled atmosphere storage rooms and modified atmosphere packaging [ ]. CO2 sensing is not a trivial area of research, as is testified by the increasing numbers of publications regarding this topic over the past decade. The main reason is that CO2 chemically is relatively unreactive, and therefore finding a mechanism for signal generation is difficult. Most publications are based on its well-known acidic properties. In this communication, we present a portable optical sensor for gaseous CO2 detection based on the phosphorescence intensity variation of a platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) complex trapped in oxygen-insensitive poly(vinylidene chloride-co-vinyl chloride) (PVCD) membranes. The sensing mechanism arises from the increasing displacement of the α-naphtholphthalein...

A new MAC scheme for very high-speed WLANs
(2006)

Abstract:
We consider the medium access control (MAC) layer for very high-speed Wireless LANs, which is designed to support rich multimedia applications such as high-definition television. In such networks, the physical (PHY) layer data rate is proposed to exceed 216Mbps. The legacy MAC layer, however, greatly restricts the performance improvement due to its overhead. It has been shown that MAC utilizes less than 20% of the transportation ability provided by the PHY layer. To mitigate this inefficiency, we propose an Aggregation with Fragment Retransmission (AFR) scheme, which supports transmissions of very large frames and partial retransmissions in the case of errors. Aggregation allows for increased performance despite per-transmission overhead while partial retransmission alleviates the risk of losing the entire frame. Extensive simulations show that AFR fundamentally outperforms the legacy MAC protocol. It is particularly effctive for applications with high data rates and large packet si...

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a new manifold representation for visual speech recognition. The developed system consists of three main steps: a. Lip extraction from input video data. b. Generate the Expectation-Maximization PCA (EMPCA) manifolds for the entire image sequence and perform manifold interpolation and re-sampling. c. Classify the manifolds using a HMM classifier to identify the words described by the lips motions in the input video sequence.

A new manifold representation for visual speech recognition

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a new manifold representation capable of being applied for visual speech recognition. In this regard, the real time input video data is compressed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the low-dimensional points calculated for each frame define the manifolds. Since the number of frames that from the video sequence is dependent on the word complexity, in order to use these manifolds for visual speech classification it is required to re-sample them into a fixed number of keypoints that are used as input for classification. In this paper two classification schemes, namely the k Nearest Neighbour (kNN) algorithm that is used in conjunction with the two-stage PCA and Hidden-Markov-Model (HMM) classifier are evaluated. The classification results for a group of English words indicate that the proposed approach is able to produce accurate classification results.

A new method for the determination of the locking range of oscillators
(2007)
Christoffersen, Carlos E.; Condon, Marissa; Xu, Tao
Abstract:
A time-domain method for the determination of the injection-locking range of oscillators is presented. The method involves three time dimensions: the first and the second are warped time scales used for the free-running frequency and the external excitation, respectively and the third is to account for slow transients to reach a steady-state regime. The locking range is determined by tuning the frequency of the external excitation until the oscillator locks. The locking condition is determined by analyzing the Jacobian matrix of the system. The method is advantageous in that the computational effort is independent of the presence of widely separated time constants in the oscillator. Numerical results for a Van Der Pol oscillator are presented.

A new metric for patent retrieval evaluation
(2010)

Abstract:
Patent retrieval is generally considered to be a recall-oriented information retrieval task that is growing in importance. Despite this fact, precision based scores such as mean average precision (MAP) remain the primary evaluation measures for patent retrieval. Our study examines different evaluation measures for the recall-oriented patent retrieval task and shows the limitations of the current scores in comparing different IR systems for this task. We introduce PRES, a novel evaluation metric for this type of application taking account of recall and user search effort. The behaviour of PRES is demonstrated on 48 runs from the CLEF-IP 2009 patent retrieval track. A full analysis of the performance of PRES shows its suitability for measuring the retrieval effectiveness of systems from a recall focused perspective taking into account the expected search effort of patent searchers.

A new multi-parallel condition assessment scale for estimating tunnel-induced damage
(2008)
Laefer, Debra F.; Conry, B.; Murphy, D.; Ceribasi, Seyit
Abstract:
Traditional means to predict tunnel-induced damage for large groups of potentially affected above ground structures has generally focused on creating a settlement trough and estimating subsequent building response limited by rudimentary aspects of each building’s geometry, structural system, foundation type, and soil bearing capacity. Historically, the procedure is done without consideration for a building’s condition. In this paper, a supplementary step is proposed – one focused on the building’s current state of repair. The presented system employs at its core a widely adopted crack evaluation scale. The main focus is application to unreinforced masonry buildings as they are simultaneously, disproportionately present in urban areas and vulnerable to tunnel movements. The proposed system is herein outlined and applied to a future tunnelling project in Ireland.

A new technique for the transient simulation of transmission lines inclusive of skin effect
(2001)
Condon, Marissa
Abstract:
A new approach is presented for the transient simulation of lossy transmission lines in high-speed circuits. The approach is based on developing a model for the transmission line which is structured around natural modes of oscillation unlike other transmission-line models which are based on travelling waves. The principal advantage of the new approach is that conversion of frequency-domain prototype models for the transmission lines to the time domain for use in circuit simulators is particularly straightforward and obviates the need for numerical convolution. An illustrative case is given to confirm the efficacy of the new approach.

A noise adaptive symbol timing synchronization algorithm for software radio receivers

Abstract:
Software radio promises tremendous benefits from both commercial and military standpoints. Currently, there are a number of different 'shades' of software radio based on the use of FPGAs, DSP chips or general-purpose processors to perform the signal processing. There are also hybrids between these three platforms. The Network and Telecommunications Research Group (NTRG) approach is to focus on the use of a general-purpose processor (GPP). This maximizes the reconfigurability of the system. The use of a GPP to perform signal processing for communications applications presents the developer with challenges but it also presents some opportunities. We argue new classes of algorithms are required which will exploit the advantages and negate the disadvantages of using a GPP. Indeed other researchers have already started this programme of 'algorithmic advances'. This paper discusses the issues involved and reviews some existing developments. We present our own progress ...

A non-destructive grammar modification approach to modularity in grammatical evolution

Abstract:
Modularity has proven to be an important aspect of evolutionary computation. This work is concerned with discovering and using modules in one form of grammar-based genetic programming, grammatical evolution (GE). Previous work has shown that simply adding modules to GE’s grammar has the potential to disrupt fit individuals developed by evolution up to that point. This paper presents a solution to prevent the disturbance in fitness that can come with modifying GE’s grammar with previously discovered modules. The results show an increase in performance from a previously examined grammar modification approach and also an increase in performance when compared to standard GE.

A non-linear operator based method for harmonic feature extraction from speech signals
(2007)
Kavanagh, Darren F.; Boland, Frank
Abstract:
An important pre-processing stage in speech recognition systems is that of extracting phonetically pertinent acoustic features from the speech signal. These features form the basis for discriminative classification and serve as cues for the identification of phonetic events in speech. The paper addresses this by presenting a novel method for the classification of harmonic (short-term periodic) and non-harmonic segments in speech signals. Classification is accomplished by proposing two new features derived from the non-linear Teager energy operator (TEO). The features proposed are the TEO-Weighted Harmonic Product (TEO-WHP*)and the TEO-Weighted Harmonic Sum (TEO-WHS*). Experiments are reported and discussed that demonstrate the effectiveness and the importance of these features as a valuable preprocessor for many speech systems.

A non-linear PID controller for CSTR using local model networks
(2002)
Gao, Ruiyao; O'Dwyer, Aidan; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:
The basic PID controllers have difficulty in dealing with problems that appear in complex non-linear processes. This paper presents a practical non-linear PID controller that deals with these non-linear difficulties. It utilises a local model (LM) network, which combines a set of local models within an artificial neural network structure, to adaptively characterise the process non-linearity. Then a local controller network is formulated through a gating system deduced from the LMN to handle the non-linearity. A continuous stirred tank reaction (CSTR) case study illustrates the practicality of this method in the modelling and control of non-linear processes. PID controllers are still alive and appropriate for the control of non-linear processes.
