Abstract:
Advanced sensory systems address a number of major obstacles towards the provision for cost effective and proactive rehabilitation. Many of these systems employ technologies such as high-speed video or motion capture to generate quantitative measurements. However these solutions are accompanied by some major limitations including extensive set-up and calibration, restriction to indoor use, high cost and time consuming data analysis. Additionally many do not quantify improvement in a rigorous manner for example gait analysis for 5 minutes as opposed to 24 hour ambulatory monitoring. This work addresses these limitations using low cost, wearable wireless inertial measurement as a mobile and minimal infrastructure alternative. In cooperation with healthcare professionals the goal is to design and implement a reconfigurable and intelligent movement capture system. A key component of this work is an extensive benchmark comparison with the 'gold standard' VICON motion capture sy...

Abstract:
Background: Physical activity is a principal intervention in primary and secondary prevention of chronic illness. While the benefits of community based rehabilitation is acknowledged, the rate of attendance and adherence remains sub optimal. Self-efficacy is acknowledged to be a key factor relating to adherence in rehabilitation but the construct of proxy efficacy, defined as one’s confidence in the skills and abilities of a third party to function effectively on another’s behalf, is less often studied. This paper examines the relationship between gender and ‘self’ and ‘proxy-efficacy’ and their potential role in attendance to a community based chronic illness rehabiliation (CBCIR) programme. Methods: Participants attending induction at the programme completed a questionnaire assessing demographics and both self (9 items) and proxy efficacy for exercise (9 items) which was assessed on a Likert scale from 0 (not confident at all) to 10 (very confident), with a higher score indicating ...

A bigger picture: information systems and spatial data infrastructure research perspectives
(2009)

Abstract:
A weakness of spatial data infrastructure (SDI) studies has been the limited uptake of research outside of positivist and scientific-technological perspectives. To put it simply, a study of a SDI without considering other philosophies of knowledge will be greatly constrained to technical and administrative organizational dimensions. The ontological uniformity of SDI studies is unnecessarily restrictive. While valuable in a narrowly defined framework of project, SDI studies should consider the larger set of interactions involving actors in political, administrative and socio-technical domains. We review the development of information system research approaches and consider key positions from its diverse ontologies (positivism and interpretivism) and theories (strategic alignment, interactionism and social construction). We point to possible ways to consider these positions in SDI research.

Abstract:

For both engineers and linguists, the computer synthesis of natural speech is an objective that would provide many useful applications to human-computer interaction, including the realm of electro-acoustic music. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the area of speech synthesis by providing an overview of the three main methods of computer speech synthesis; namely concatenative, articulatory and formant syntheses. Some aspects of the current state of the technology are illuminated and the final section will explain the author’s motivation and current research approach to the field of voice modification.

A Built-In-Test Circuit for Functional Verification & PVT Variations Monitoring of CMOS RF Circuits
(2006)
Zhang, Guoyan; Sánchez Mora, Magdalena; Farrell, Ronan
Abstract:
Built-In-Test (BIT) for Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits can reduce the testing cost, especially with the increase of integration level and operating frequency. A fully integrated CMOS BIT detection circuit is presented in this work. This BIT detection circuit is rectifier-based and low threshold voltage diode-connected MOS transistor with substrate positively-biased is used to improve the detecting sensitivity. As an example, a 2.4GHz LNA is used, the high frequency small signal gain is extracted and the gain fluctuation due to Process, supply Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations is also investigated. The simulation results show that this BIT detection circuit can realize on-chip functional verification of RF circuits and also monitor the influence of PVT variations on the performance of the circuit without affecting the high frequency performance of the measured RF circuits.

Abstract:
In this paper I aim to achieve two outcomes. The first is to open up thinking around how, in a context where governments are increasingly exploring and drawing on notions of fluid networks, joined-up government, interagency collaboration and so on, we can develop forms of policy sociology that can capture the complex 'what happened' of policy outcomes. Secondly, I want to briefly share the findings of my own case study research into one such government-instituted network in Victoria, Australia.

A case study in decompounding for Bengali information retrieval
(2013)
Ganguly, Debasis; Leveling, Johannes; Jones, Gareth J.F.
Abstract:
Decompounding has been found to improve information retrieval (IR) effectiveness for compounding languages such as Dutch, German, or Finnish. No previous studies, however, exist on the effect of decomposition of compounds in IR for Indian languages. In this case study, we investigate the effect of decompounding for Bengali, a highly agglutinative Indian language. Some unique characteristics of Bengali compounding are: i) only one constituent may be a valid word in contrast to the stricter requirement of both being so; and ii) the first character of the right constituent can be modified by the rules of sandhi in contrast to simple concatenation. While the standard approach of decompounding based on maximization of the total frequency of the constituents formed by candidate split positions has proven beneficial for European languages, our reported experiments in this paper show that such a standard approach does not work particularly well for Bengali IR. As a solution, we firstly prop...

A Case Study in Modeling and Process Control: the Control of a Pilot Scale Heating and Ventilation System
(2006)
Mooney, Robin; O'Dwyer, Aidan
Abstract:

This paper details the control of a pilot scale laboratory heating and ventilation system. The system is represented in 2x2 multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) form. A process reaction curve identification technique was used to model (in first order lag plus delay - FOLPD - form) the flow process and temperature process portions of the system, over a range of operating conditions. Tests revealed that both processes were continuously non-linear. A gain scheduler with static decoupling was designed, using look-up tables, to continuously interpolate for the most suitable proportional-integral (PI) or proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller settings and decoupler gains. The contribution of this paper is the careful application, using well-known techniques, of a complete controller design cycle for a laboratory scale system.

A case study investigation of the efforts of a subsidiary of a US-based multinational corporation to promote pension savings
(2016)
Maloney, Maureen; Morris, David
Abstract:
The pension situation faced by all Irish workers is complex and uncertain. Further, it is possible that the state will be unable to maintain the current level of pension provision in real terms. This is based on demographic projections that indicate that the ratio of working age people to pensioners will fall and assessments that the deterioration in the public finances will reduce the capacity of the state to maintain the real value of pensions distributed through the State-run Social Welfare system. Therefore, the pressure for individuals to save for retirement is intense.

Abstract:

In the context of green supply chain management, green purchasing has received increased attention over the past decade and the strategic importance of introducing green aspects into purchasing practices has been recognised. Despite this growing importance, little has been written in relation to purchasing green transport and logistics services. Considering the strong environmental impact associated with transport and logistics activities, much remains to be learned concerning buyer’s practices when sourcing more sustainable services from third party logistics companies (3PLs). The aim of this paper is to explore practices of buying green transport and logistics services in three different European countries (Italy, Ireland and Sweden) using a multiple case study research approach. The paper analyses how general environmental company ambitions and environmental purchasing practices are reflected when green transport and logistics services are purchased. The results of the p...

A case study of risk management in agile systems development
(2010)
Coyle, Sharon; Conboy, Kieran
Abstract:
A principal objective of agile development methods is to reduce risk thereby resulting in more successful and effective information systems. However, while there is an extensive body of academic literature on risk management, very little research has attempted to rigorously apply this as a lens to study risk management in agile development projects. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the extent to which risk management practices are incorporated into agile development projects. A case study was conducted involving a change management consultancy firm whose main business involved the deployment of agile approaches. The study found that while there is a perception that risk management practices are not carried out in agile environments, the extent to which risk management is conducted on these projects is in some cases just as substantial to that carried out on traditional projects. In fact, in this case it appeared that the teams were more rigorous in their risk management...

Abstract:
Software Product Lines (SPL) enable e cient derivation of products. SPL concepts have been applied successfully in many domains including interactive applications. However, the user interface (UI) part of applications has barely been addressed yet. While standard SPL concepts allow derivation of functionally correct UIs, there are additional nonfunctional requirements, like usability, which have to be considered. This paper presents a case study investigating UI variability found in variants of the commercial web-based information system HIS-GX/QIS. We analyze which aspects of a UI vary and to which degree. The results show that just tweaking the nal UI (e.g., using stylesheets) is not su cient but there is a need for more customization which must be supported by, e.g., UI-speci c models.

A Case-Based Approach to Cross Domain Sentiment Classification
(2012)
Ohana, Bruno; Delany, Sarah Jane; Tierney, Brendan
Abstract:

This paper considers the task of sentiment classification of subjective text across many domains, in particular on scenarios where no in-domain data is available. Motivated by the more general applicability of such methods, we propose an extensible approach to sentiment classification that leverages sentiment lexicons and out-of-domain data to build a case-based system where solutions to past cases are reused to predict the sentiment of new documents from an unknown domain. In our approach the case representation uses a set of features based on document statistics, while the case solution stores sentiment lexicons employed on past predictions allowing for later retrieval and reuse on similar documents. The case-based nature of our approach also allows for future improvements since new lexicons and classification methods can be added to the case base as they become available. On a cross domain experiment our method has shown robust results when compared to a baseline single-...

Abstract:
Web search is the main way for millions of users to access information every day, but we continue to struggle when it comes to finding the right information at the right time. In this paper we build on recent work to describe and evaluate a new application of case-based Web search, one that focuses on how experience reuse can support collab- oration among searchers. Special emphasis is placed on the development of a case-based system that is compatible with existing search engines. We also describe the results of a live-user deployment.

A Case-based Technique for Tracking Concept Drift in Spam Filtering
(2004)

Abstract:

Clearly, machine learning techniques can play an important role in filtering spam email because ample training data is available to build a robust classifier. However, spam filtering is a particularly challenging task as the data distribution and concept being learned changes over time. This is a particularly awkward form of concept drift as the change is driven by spammers wishing to circumvent the spam filters. In this paper we show that lazy learning techniques are appropriate for such dynamically changing contexts. We present a case-based system for spam filtering called ECUE that can learn dynamically. We evaluate its performance as the case-base is updated with new cases. We also explore the benefit of periodically redoing the feature selection process to bring new features into play. Our evaluation shows that these two levels of model update are effective in tracking concept drift.

Abstract:
Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient to monitor in natural waters as it is a growth limiting nutrient. When levels of phosphorus are elevated, excessive growth of algae occurs. This can lead to hypoxic or anoxic waters, potential release of harmful toxins and it impacts negatively on the ecosystem. Phosphorus measurement in water involves the collection of grab samples, transport and storage of samples, and analysis using expensive analytical instrumentation. This is costly, time and labour intensive and is carried out infrequently as a result. In this work, P is measured as soluble reactive phosphate (SRP), to give an indication of P levels in fresh water. A device for in situ analysis of SRP was fabricated. This device consists of a centrifugal microfluidic lab-on-a-disc platform, with a housing unit. The disc operates by mixing the sample with ascorbic acid method reagents using centrifugal force. The coloured product is presented to an optical detection system consisting of a...

A centrifugo-magnetically actuated gas micropump
(2006)
Haeberle, S.; Schmitt, N.; Zengerle, Roland; Ducrée, Jens
Abstract:
This paper describes a novel gas micropump on a centrifugal microfluidic platform. The pump is integrated on a passive and microstructured polymer disk which is sealed with an elastomer lid featuring paramagnetic inlays. The rotational motion of this hybrid disk over a stationary magnet induces a designated sequence of volume displacements of the elastic lid, leading to a net transport of gas. The pumping pressure scales linearly with the frequency, with a maximum observable pressure of 4.1 kPa. The first application of this rotary device is the production of gas-liquid flows by pumping ambient air into a continuous centrifugal flow of liquid. The injected gas volume segments the liquid stream into a series of liquid compartments. Apart from such multi-phase flows, the new pumping technique supplements a generic air-to-liquid sampling method to centrifugal microfluidic platforms.

Abstract:
An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.
