A Comparison of Channel Assignment Techniques with Power Control in Ad Hoc Networks
(2009)
DA SILVA, LUIZ
Abstract:
Multi-channel operation in an ad hoc network can improve robustness and reliability by efficiently managing interference and reducing contention. In this paper, we model four dynamic channel assignment techniques under the same set of assumptions, comparing the efficiency of their power and channel allocations. As the number of channels increases, the differences in the performance of the four techniques become more pronounced. Among the techniques studied, the conflict graph-based technique achieves the highest number of feasible links and the lowest average power consumption.

Abstract:
<p>A simple and compact electronic speckle pattern interferometry system using a reflection holographic optical element is presented. The reflection holographic optical element is recorded on an acrylamide based photopolymer formulated and prepared at the Centre for Industrial & Engineering Optics. Light intensity of 40mW/cm2 with an exposure time of 60 seconds was used in fabricating the holographic optical element. The vibration mode patterns of a 4 cm diameter thin circular sheet of brass metal attached to a 4 cm diameter paper cone loud speaker are presented.</p>

A Comparative analysis: QA evaluation questions versus real-world queries
(2010)
Leveling, Johannes
Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of user queries to a web search engine, questions to a Q&A service (answers.com), and questions employed in question answering (QA) evaluations at TREC and CLEF. The analysis shows that user queries to search engines contain mostly content words (i.e. keywords) but lack structure words (i.e. stopwords) and capitalization. Thus, they resemble natural language input after case folding and stopword removal. In contrast, topics for QA evaluation and questions to answers.com mainly consist of fully capitalized and syntactically well-formed questions. Classification experiments using a na¨ıve Bayes classifier show that stopwords play an important role in determining the expected answer type. A classification based on stopwords is considerably more accurate (47.5% accuracy) than a classification based on all query words (40.1% accuracy) or on content words (33.9% accuracy). To simulate user input, questions are preprocessed by case folding and...

A Comparative Error Analysis of Audio-Visual Source Localization
(2008)
BOLAND, FRANCIS MORGAN; PITIE, FRANCOIS; KOKARAM, ANIL CHRISTOPHER
Abstract:
This paper examines the accuracy of audio-video based localization using multiple cameras and multi-microphones. Covariance mapping theory is used to determine the accuracy of audio and video based localization. Both modalities are compared in terms of their ability to provide accurate location estimates of a moving audio-visual source. Relatively, video is found to be significantly more accurate than audio. The problem of audio-video fusion is also examined. The fusion of audio and video location estimates is applied in the audio domain, the video domain and the positional domain. The accuracy of these three fusion strategies for 3D localization are examined from a theoretical basis. The best localization performance is found when fusion is applied in the positional domain. Fusing audio and video data in the video domain is found to exhibit the worst localization performance. This analysis is confirmed by measuring the accuracy of each fusion strategy in localizing a moving audio-v...

A comparative evaluation of deep and shallow approaches to the automatic detection of common grammatical errors
(2007)
Wagner, Joachim; Foster, Jennifer; van Genabith, Josef
Abstract:
This paper compares a deep and a shallow processing approach to the problem of classifying a sentence as grammatically wellformed or ill-formed. The deep processing approach uses the XLE LFG parser and English grammar: two versions are presented, one which uses the XLE directly to perform the classification, and another one which uses a decision tree trained on features consisting of the XLE’s output statistics. The shallow processing approach predicts grammaticality based on n-gram frequency statistics: we present two versions, one which uses frequency thresholds and one which uses a decision tree trained on the frequencies of the rarest n-grams in the input sentence. We find that the use of a decision tree improves on the basic approach only for the deep parser-based approach. We also show that combining both the shallow and deep decision tree features is effective. Our evaluation is carried out using a large test set of grammatical and ungrammatical sentences. The ungrammatical t...

A Comparative Study in the Use of Brachial Photoplethysmography and the QRS Complex as Timing References in Determination of Pulse Transit Time
(2001)
Maguire, M.; Ward, T.; Markham, C.; O'Shea, D.; Kevin, L.
Abstract:
For more than a century, there has been interest in pulse wave velocity and pulse transit time as a possible metric for blood pressure and other cardiovascular parameters. The most common approach in noninvash:e measurement of these metries has been to measure the time delay between the QRS complex on the electrocardiograph and the detection of the finger photoplethysmograph. This paper introduces a new technique for measuring the brachial photoplethysmograph and argues that this forms a better timing reference than the QRS complex.

A Comparative Study of Organisational Commitment of Bank Employees in Ireland and China
(2009)
Chen, Helen
Abstract:
<p>Organisational commitment has been extensively researched in the Western and non-Western contexts. However, little has been conducted to approach it from a cross-cultural perspective. This paper sets out to fill in the gap by examining bank employees’ organisational commitment in Ireland and China. Data was collected in two American banks, one in Ireland and the other one in China in June 2008. Research results showed interesting and dynamic differences of the three dimensions of the Irish and Chinese bank employees’ organisational commitment with regards to the effects of income, gender and tenure. Implications for managers in Ireland and China are discussed.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Organizational commitment is a complicated concept. However it is primarily regarded as an attitudinal construct dealing with the perceived utility of continued participation in the employing organization (Hrebriniak & Alutto, 1972). In a similar vein, it has also been described, according to Buchanan, (1974), as a partisan, affective attachment to the goals and values of an organization, to one’s role in relation to goals and values of an organization, and to the organization for its own sake; or according to Porter et al. (1974), as a strong belief in and acceptance of the organization’s goals and values, a willingness to exert considerable effort into the organization, and a definite desire to maintain such employment relationship.</p>

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Due to their physical and chemical properties, mortars made with lime are considered to be more compatible with historic fabrics than those made with artificial cements. This paper intends to contribute to the knowledge of the behavior of lime mortar masonry, by exploring the mechanical properties of clay brick masonry bound with both hydraulic and non-hydraulic lime mortars. Masonry wallettes built with a (non-hydraulic) low-strength, calcium lime binder (CL90-s) and a natural-hydraulic-lime of hydraulic strength 5 MPa. (NHL 5) were tested for compressive and flexural strength. The strength of the bond between the mortar and the brick was also measured. The results examine the relationships between the mortar properties and the ultimate strength results of the two types of masonry tested. The paper also compares the mechanical behaviour of the two masonry types under lateral and vertical loads and studies the modes of failure and their relationship with the mortar...

Abstract:

Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) is commonly used partially replacing Portland cement (PC) in concrete. GGBS is a finely-grained, basic slag with hydraulic properties and a high specific surface, produced as a by product in metallurgy. A number of authors have studied the influence of GGBS addition on the properties of OPC mortars and concrete concluding that GGBS enhances the general performance of PC composites improving workability, reducing creep and drying shrinkage, raising the ultimate compressive strength and reducing bleeding and heat of hydration. GGBS has been reported to improve the pore structure of PC decreasing salt diffusion thus incresing durability. However the most relevant hygric properties of GGBS mortar have not yet been studied. This paper provides an account of the most relevant hygric properties of GGBS and PC mortars. It compares the permeability, capillary suction, water absorption and compressive stregth of PC mortars incorpor...

A comparative survey of economic models for software product lines
(2011)
Ali, Muhammad Sarmad; Ali Babar, Muhammad; Schmid, Klaus
Abstract:
Software product line engineering aims at achieving systematic reuse by exploiting commonalities among related products in order to reduce cost and time-tomarket. Before adopting this approach, organizations are likely to estimate the benefits they can expect to achieve and the level of investment required to transition to product line engineering. Several economic models and analysis approaches have been developed in order to help make a sound business case. There is a need to review the existing approaches in order to better understand the overall landscape of economic models. To this objective, this paper provides an overview of some existing economic models and discusses important issues and directions in product line economic modeling.

Abstract:
The use of Open Source Software (OSS) components has become a viable alternative to Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components in product development. Since the quality of OSS products varies widely, both industry and the research community have reported several OSS evaluation methods that are tailored to the specific characteristics of OSS. We have performed a systematic identification of these methods, and present a comparison framework to compare these methods.

Abstract:
There is a need to increase long-term exercise compliance amongst rheumatology patients to improve symptoms and quality of life. Exergaming systems, (computer video-game based exercise) could provide these patients with a motivating exercise tool to achieve such. This study aimed to compare the subjective reports of a group of rheumatology patients who exercised with an exergaming system to the reports of a similar group who performed the conventional, equivalent form of exercise, without the exergaming system.

A comparison of classical scheduling approaches in power-constrained block-test scheduling
(2000)
Muresan, Valentin; Wang, Xiaojun; Muresan, Valentina; Vladutiu, M.
Abstract:
Classical scheduling approaches are applied here to overcome the problem of unequal-length block-test scheduling under power dissipation constraints. List scheduling-like approaches are proposed first as greedy algorithms to tackle the fore mentioned problem. Then, distribution-graph based approaches are described in order to achieve balanced test concurrency and test power dissipation. An extended tree growing technique is also used in combination with these classical approaches in order to improve the test concurrency having assigned power dissipation limits. A comparison between the results of the test scheduling experiments highlights the advantages and disadvantages of applying different classical scheduling algorithms to the power-constrained test scheduling problem

A comparison of conventional septic tank systems and alternative horizontal subsurface-flow reed bed systems in the treatment of domestic wastewater
(2007)
O'LUANAIGH, NIALL
Abstract:
In Ireland, the most prevalent domestic wastewater treatment application in unsewered areas is the conventional septic tank system with percolation area. However, concern has been expressed over on-site effluent discharging into highly permeable soils which, although permitted in current Irish EPA guidelines, has generated debate as to whether an insufficient level of treatment in the subsoil’s unsaturated zone is being achieved. In situations where a septic tank installation is considered unsuitable according to a rigorous site assessment, some form of secondary treatment system can be installed to improve the effluent quality before discharge to the subsoil. Horizontal subsurface-flow reed bed systems are one such technology receiving significant attention recently, being deemed an effective and low-cost alternative for secondary treatment applications. On-site research was thus carried out to assess and compare the treatment capabilities of freely-draining sandy subsoils receivin...

A Comparison of Ensemble and Case-Base Maintenance Techniques for Handling Concept Drift in Spam Filtering
(2006)
Delany, Sarah Jane; Cunningham, Padraig; Tsymbal, Alexey
Abstract:
The problem of concept drift has recently received con- siderable attention in machine learning research. One important practical problem where concept drift needs to be addressed is spam filtering. The literature on con- cept drift shows that among the most promising ap- proaches are ensembles and a variety of techniques for ensemble construction has been proposed. In this pa- per we compare the ensemble approach to an alternative lazy learning approach to concept drift whereby a sin- gle case-based classifier for spam filtering keeps itself up-to-date through a case-base maintenance protocol. We present an evaluation that shows that the case-base maintenance approach is more effective than a selection of ensemble techniques. The evaluation is complicated by the overriding importance of False Positives (FPs) in spam filtering. The ensemble approaches can have very good performance on FPs because it is possible to bias an ensemble more strongly away from FPs than it is to bias the s...

A comparison of new generic camera calibration with the standard parametric approach
(2007)
Dunne, Aubrey K.; Mallon, John; Whelan, Paul F.
Abstract:
This paper deals with a recently proposed nonparametric approach to camera calibration, which is applicable to any type of sensor design. Currently, no relative quantitative performance data is available for this method. This paper addresses this issue, by providing a comprehensive evaluation with respect to the standard planar calibration technique in the literature. Experiments are conducted on simulated and real data, with the firm conclusion that the generic calibration method has the capability to outperform the standard parametric approach for imaging systems with significant distortion. The results provide important practical information for the vision community at large.

A comparison of score, rank and probability-based fusion methods for video shot retrieval
(2005)
McDonald, Kieran; Smeaton, Alan F.
Abstract:
It is now accepted that the most effective video shot retrieval is based on indexing and retrieving clips using multiple, parallel modalities such as text-matching, image-matching and feature matching and then combining or fusing these parallel retrieval streams in some way. In this paper we investigate a range of fusion methods for combining based on multiple visual features (colour, edge and texture), for combining based on multiple visual examples in the query and for combining multiple modalities (text and visual). Using three TRECVid collections and the TRECVid search task, we specifically compare fusion methods based on normalised score and rank that use either the average, weighted average or maximum of retrieval results from a discrete Jelinek-Mercer smoothed language model. We also compare these results with a simple probability-based combination of the language model results that assumes all features and visual examples are fully independent.

A Comparison of Some Low Cost Laminates for Antennas Operating in the 2.45 GHZ ISM Band
(1998)
Ammann, Max
Abstract:
<p>An evaluation of some low-cost laminates suitable for microstrip patch antennas is presented. Criteria for the selection of substrates for antenna fabrication are given careful consideration. A coaxial-probe fed linearly-polarized rectangular microstrip patch operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz was fabricated on four different low cost laminates. The substrates used were polyester, epoxy glass (FR-4), a ceramic filled PTFE composite and a woven glass-reinforced hydrocarbon and ceramic thermoset material. Material properties are discussed and the antenna performances are evaluated and compared to one fabricated on a thick glass-loaded microfiber PTFE substrate. An evaluation of some inexpensive microstrip antenna CAD packages, which employ closed-form expressions based on transmission-line and cavity models, is also given. These models ignore the diffraction effects of a finite ground-plane.</p>

Abstract:
<p>In 2007 Irvine and Stafford [1] surveyed the attitude to the need for enhanced renewable education within groups of Electricians, Architects and Chemists in Wales. Similar groups were surveyed in Ireland in 2008. In comparing the attitudes of students in these two countries the principal differences are governmental support for microgeneration, the quantity of installed microgeneration and the year of the survey. The two countries are broadly similar in terms of geography, climate, population size, ethnicity, broadcast media, educational achievements, economy and income spread.</p> <p>In Ireland there is greater support for governmental intervention and for increased levels of installation. This could be a reaction to the very low level of activity that prevails in Ireland. The rapid changes during 2008 in economic outlook and in Climate Change consensus may have impacted on the responses. In many areas addressed in the survey the disciplines adopted a consensus...

Leveling, Johannes
Abstract:
This paper compares different methods of subword indexing and their performance on the English and German domain-specific document collection of the Cross-language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). Four major methods to index sub-words are investigated and compared to indexing stems: 1) sequences of vowels and consonants, 2) a dictionary-based approach for decompounding, 3) overlapping character n-grams, and 4) Knuth’s algorithm for hyphenation. The performance and effects of sub-word extraction on search time and index size and time are reported for English and German retrieval experiments. The main results are: For English, indexing sub-words does not outperform the baseline using standard retrieval on stemmed word forms (–8% mean average precision (MAP), – 11% geometric MAP (GMAP), +1% relevant and retrieved documents (rel ret) for the best experiment). For German, with the exception of n-grams, all methods for indexing sub-words achieve a higher performance than the stemming baseline. Th...

A comparison of the aerobic energy demands of two commercially available cycle ergometers in trained cyclists
(2009)
May, Gregory C.; Warrington, Giles D.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare the energy demands of two cycling ergometers, (Velotron Dynafit Pro and Monark 834E) commonly used in the physiological monitoring of elite athletes. Eight trained male cyclists with a minimum 2 years training and racing experience participated in the study. Each subject completed an exercise trial involving a maximal incremental test. Testing was performed in a random order on either the Velotron or Monark cycle ergometer at the same time of day with no more than 14 days between each testing session. Subjects were requested to maintain their normal training and nutritional practices during the course of the study but to refrain from any intensive training 48 hours prior to each testing session. During the incremental testing significant differences for power output (PO), heart rate (HR), and oxygen uptake (VO2) were found at both at fixed blood lactate (BL) reference points of; 2.5mmol l-1 (REF2.5mM) and at 4mmol.l-1 (REF4mM). This study investigates the automatic classification of the Frank lead ECG into different disease categories. A comparison of the performance of a number of different feature sets is presented. The feature sets considered include wavelet-based features, standard cardiology features, and features taken directly from time-domain samples of the EGG. The classification performance of each feature set was optimised using automatic feature selection and choosing the best classifier model from linear, quadratic and logistic discriminants. The ECG database used contains 500 cases classed into seven categories with 100% confidence. Using multiple runs of ten-fold cross-validation, the overall seven-way accuracy of different feature sets and classifier model combinations ranged between 60% and 75%. The best performing classifier used linear discriminants processing selected time-domain features. This is also found to be the simplest and fastest classifier to implement
