Technique to Analyze Characteristics of Turbomachinery Broadband Noise Sources (AIAA 2010-3979)
(2010)
BENNETT, GARETH
Abstract:
In this paper an experimental technique for the decomposition of broadband ducted sound fields into their mode constituents is applied to two laboratory scale experimental setups. The broadband mode analysis technique is based on spectral coherences. In both cases, incoherent broadband sound fields were excited by means of a loudspeaker array. The results derived from the basic setup S1 were validated successfully with analytical findings. The second setup S2 mimics the fundamental arrangement in an aero-engine exhaust, consisting of a broadband sound source (an annular combustor ring) and a turbomachinery stage (the LP turbine). In between, microphone arrays are arranged to acquire the broadband sound fields. Sample results of setup S2 are presented analyzed by means of the new technique. The experimental outcome proves the usefulness of the analysis technique to help interpreting and understanding broadband sound propagation in turbomachinery flow ducts.

Absence of Mitochondrial Uncoupling Protein 1 Affects Apoptosis in Thymocytes, Thymocyte/T-Cell profile and Peripheral T-Cell Number

Abstract:
Our laboratory has previously demonstrated the presence of constitutively expressed mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 in mouse thymocytes. In our endeavours to understand the role of mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 in thymocyte function, we compared cell profiles in thymus and spleen of wild-type with those of UCP 1 knock-out mice, which in turn led to comparative investigations of apoptotic potential in thymocytes from these mice. We demonstrate that spleen cell numbers were reduced 3-fold in UCP 1 knock-out mice compared to wild-type mice. We record a halving of CD8 single positive cell numbers in thymus with a significant incremental increase in CD4/CD8 double positives cell numbers in the thymus of UCP 1 knock-out mice compared to wild-type mice. Theses data are mirrored by an approximate halving of CD8 single positive cell numbers and a doubling of CD4/CD8 double positive cell numbers in the spleen of UCP 1 knock-out mice compared to wild-type mice. These differences are m...

Abstract:
As the technology underlying sensor networks becomes more advanced and reliable, ubiquitous computing will come closer to being a reality. This paper details the design and deployment of several sensor nodes that use the delay tolerant network approach in order to meet the relevant application requirements. Two applications are presented, lake water quality monitoring in rural lakes and noise level logging in urban areas and along motorways. The installations are discussed and initial results presented.

Aeroacoustic Noise Source Identification Using Irregularly Sampled LDV Measurements Coupled with Beamforming (AIAA-2011-2719)
(2011)
BENNETT, GARETH
Abstract:
This paper develops a technique which relates dynamic pressure measurements taken outside the hydrodynamic eld of a low speed jet to single point, one component velocity measurements taken within the jet using a Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) system. To improve the signal to noise ratio of the pressure measurement, a coherence based acoustic beamforming technique is applied and focussed on the LDV measurement volume in order to evaluate its contribution to the measured sound. As the pressure samples are acquired at regular time steps whereas the velocity at irregular time intervals dependent on the particle seeding, the calculation of the auto- and cross-spectra of the pressure and veloc- ity measurements require special treatment. The signal processing procedures required to calculate these are described and implemented in the paper. To validate the proposed tech- nique real experimental data was analysed. Laser Doppler Velocimetry measured velocity uctuations created by rods pl...

Experimental Investigations of Coherence Based Noise Source Identification Techniques for Turbomachinery Applications - Classic and Novel Techniques (AIAA-2011-2830)
(2011)
BENNETT, GARETH
Abstract:
Coherence based noise source identi cation techniques utilise the ordinary linear coherence function between two signals to identify the contribution of one or more sources to the noise measured at a location of interest. Such techniques can assess the relative contributions of broadband noise sources, which are the dominant noise sources in turboshaft engines, to the sound radiated at a far-field location. All such techniques require the placement of dynamic pressure sensors close to these sources. Experimental studies undertaken at the Engine Acoustics Branch of the German Aerospace Agency, DLR, as part of an EU FP7 project, TEENI, have provided data for a range of test scenarios. The test rig has been designed to represent the key acoustic elements of a real turboshaft engine. Each noise source identification technique were applied in a two noise source region scenario. The aim of these techniques was to identify the contribution of one or both of these noise sources to the noise...

Short-Term Forecasting of Bicycle Traffic Using Structural Time Series Models
(2014)
CAULFIELD, BRIAN; GHOSH, BIDISHA
Abstract:
Short term forecasting algorithms are widely used for prediction of vehicular traffic flows for adaptive traffic management. However, despite the increasing interest in the promotion of cycling in cities, little research has been carried out into the use of traffic forecasting algorithms for bicycle traffic. Structural time series models allow the various components of a time series such as level, seasonal and regression effects to be modelled separately to allow analysis of previous trends and forecasting. In this paper, a case study at a segregated bicycle lane in Dublin, Ireland was performed to test the forecasting accuracy of structural time series models applied to continuous observations of cyclist traffic volumes. It has been shown that the proposed models can produce accurate peak period forecasts of cyclist traffic volumes at both 1 hour and fifteen minute resolution and that the percentage errors are lower for hourly forecasts. The inclusion of weather metrics as explanat...

Process Behaviour: Formulae vs. Tests
(2010)
HENNESSY, MATTHEW
Abstract:
Process behaviour is often defined either in terms of the tests they satisfy, or in terms of the logical properties they enjoy. Here we compare these two approaches, using extensional testing in the style of DeNicola, Hennessy, and a recursive version of the property logic HML. We first characterise subsets of this property logic which can be captured by tests. Then we show that those subsets of the property logic capture precisely the power of tests.

Towards evaluating the benefits of inter-vehicle coordination

Abstract:
While vehicle automation has the potential to sig- nificantly improve safety and traffic efficiency, the full potential will only be realised when vehicles start exploiting wireless communication to cooperate with each other and coordinate their interactions in advance. Ensuring that vehicles coordinate safely while improving efficiency is, however, a very challenging problem as it depends on (i) the characteristics of individ- ual vehicles (vehicle physics, sensors), (ii) unreliable wireless communication, and (iii) driving behaviour at a microscopic level, and their compounded effects at scale. The presence of non-communicative, non-automated vehicles must also be considered. Designing and evaluating coordination protocols requires a scalable simulation framework that is accurate both micro- scopically (to assess safety) and macroscopically (to evaluate efficiency). Standard car-following models, where po...

Abstract:
<p>Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for national cultural institutions in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and transnational audiences. The Easter Rising of 1916- a failed rebellion against British rule- is the pivotal event in the creation of the modern Irish state and is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity.</p> <p>With 2016 marking 100years since the Easter Rising, my paper will explore how the recent centenary commemorations of this historic event have been a valuable opportunity for Ireland to engage with its past openly and creatively on a substantial platform.</p> <p>Historically, the commemorations of the 1916 Easter Rising have tended to flip flop. In 1966, the 50th commemorations were momentous and large in scale whilst in 1991 for the 75th anniversary, t...

Route profiling - putting context to work.

CAHILL, VINNY
Abstract:
Intelligent Transportation Systems are characterised by a requirement for detailed information on extensive transport networks. This information is typically gathered from sensors deployed throughout the network and is used for management and maintenance operations. In this paper we present the design and prototype implementation of a context-aware route profiling application intended for use by road management authorities in the Republic of Ireland. Our design allows data from a variety of sources to be combined to generate detailed information on traffic flow and journey times along the national road network. This information can be tagged with relevant context data reflecting the conditions under which sensor data was collected. The set of relevant contextual information includes details on temporal, spatial, weather and road usage pattern contexts. The prototype implementation relies on GPS data from a fleet of probe vehicles. An evaluation of this prototype is presented along w...

Abstract:
This paper describes an architecture that addresses common problems found in systems supporting QoS specification and enforcement, such as lack of flexibility and expressiveness in the specification of requirements and dependencies on specific platforms. The Quartz QoS architecture aims to solve these problems by adopting a highly extensible and platform-independent design.

Using Context and Behavioral Patterns for Intelligent Traffic Management
(2009)
MEIER, RENE
Abstract:
The integration of information and communications technologies across existing transportation infrastructure, systems and vehicles is fundamental to reducing traffic congestion, to improving driver safety, and to improving traveler experiences. Central to such intelligent traffic management are techniques and algorithms that are capable of analyzing the wealth of available contextual sensor data in ?real time?. Initial existing approaches tend to apply probability models and inference techniques to optimize traffic flow but fail to take into account certain aspects of human behavior that can affect the flow of traffic, such as patterns in human travel behavior. In this paper we explore how vehicle context information can be combined with the behavioral patterns of travelers to facilitate and improve intelligent traffic management. We present services for deriving reports on vehicle journeys that assist in the analysis of route performance, for enabling passengers to have remote acce...

Abstract:
The majority of studies in Personalized Information Retrieval (PIR) literature have focused on monolingual IR, and only relatively little work has been done concerning multilingual IR. In this paper we propose a novel method to represent user models in a multilingual fashion. We argue that such representation would be more suitable for Personalized Multilingual Information Retrieval (PMIR). Furthermore, we outline two algorithms for query adaptation based on user information from the multilingual user model.

Abstract:
Economic volcanic - hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits of the Archean Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, are restricted to zones of juvenile crust as revealed through regional Nd, Pb and Hf isotopic variations and the geochemistry of felsic volcanic rocks. Interpreted as Archean paleo - rift zones, one of these runs N - S through the Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (broadly coincident with the Kurnalpi Terrane) and is associated with the high grade ca. 2690 Ma Teutonic Bore, Jaguar and Bentley deposits, plus sub - economic VHMS mineralization further south. To date, only small, historic Cu deposits (e.g. Anaconda) and barren pyritic lenses have been recognised in the older 2.7 Ga plume - dominated lower stratigraphy of the Eastern Goldfields.

Metadata Independent Hashing for Media Identification & P2P Transfer Optimisation

Abstract:
Efficient swarming behaviours within peer-to-peer networks are hindered by imprecise or incorrect metadata content. Once published, metadata corrections can only be effected by a complete republish/swarm recreation or for each peer to manually make corrections (causing them to leave the swarm, decreasing performance). This work presents an approach which enables a swarm to collaboratively upgrade embedded data to reflect changes in metadata, and to identify additional candidates which contain differing metadata but a correct payload. Swarm degradation due to peer drop-off resulting from edits is eliminated, and additional peers can be identified in a fully automated fashion, increasing swarm lifetime and performance. Arising from this metadata abstraction, automatic purification can be realised in situations where multiple incomplete/incorrect versions are available within one or more unconnected swarms. Variations associated with a content set are processed associatively using a kn...

Ultraviolet and visible Raman analysis of thin a-C films grown by filtered cathodic arc deposition

PEROVA, TATIANA
Abstract:
Amorphous carbon thin films with a wide range of sp2 fraction from 20 to 90% grown by filtered cathodic arc deposition have been examined by ultraviolet (UV) at 325 nm and visible Raman spectroscopy at 457 nm excitation wavelength. The comprehensive study of behaviour of G, D and T band with sp2/sp3 content has been carried out. The upwards shift of the G peak with sp3 content was observed for both excitation wavelengths. It was also found that the I(D)/I(G) ratio decreases with sp3 content for UV and visible excitations, and for high sp3 content I(D)/I(G) tends to zero. The dispersion of the G peak is also investigated in this work as a function of sp2 content.

A Testing Theory for a Higher-Order Cryptographic Language
(2011)
HENNESSY, MATTHEW
Abstract:
We study a higher-order concurrent language with cryptographic primitives, for which we develop a sound and complete, rstorder testing theory for the preservation of safety properties. Our theory is based on co-inductive set simulations over transitions in a rst-order Labelled Transition System. This keeps track of the knowledge of the observer, and treats transmitted higher-order values in a symbolic manner, thus obviating the quanti cation over functional contexts. Our characterisation provides an attractive proof technique, and we illustrate its usefulness in proofs of equivalence, including cases where bisimulation theory does not apply.

Abstract:
This paper provides modal- and relational characterisations of may- and must-testing preorders for recursive CSP processes with divergence, featuring probabilistic as well as nondeterministic choice. May testing is characterised in terms of simulation, and must testing in terms of failure simulation. To this end we develop weak transitions between probabilistic processes, elaborate their topological properties, and capture divergence in terms of partial distributions.
