Abstract:
Die deutschen Gewerkschaften sind zu technokratisch. Um wieder kampagnenfähig zu werden, müssen sie das moralische Gerechtigkeitsempfinden der Bevölkerung ansprechen. ---German trade unions are too technocratic. In order to be able to run successful campaigns again, they need to address the popular sense of moral justice.

Petting zoos. Laughter yoga. Lunchtime mindfulness sessions. A concierge for travel booking. Ice cream baristas. And onsite bars for after hour use. These are just some of the perks on offer in companies today as they endeavour to make work a positive experience for their staff.

Abstract:
The system of direct provision for asylum seekers in Ireland has been in place for over seventeen years. For those not familiar with the direct provision system, it consists of accommodation and board for those seeking protection in Ireland, but whose protection claims have yet to be fully determined by the State. It can take many years before a full and fair determination of a person’s protection claim is finalised.

A Turkish Import in County Meath: Mediterranean Pottery on the M3
(2016)
Kelly, Amanda
Abstract:
Analysis of a pottery fragment discovered on the M3 has revealed evidence of ancient trade between Ireland and the eastern Mediterranean. A sherd from the rim of an imported pottery vessel recovered from an early medieval cemetery at Collierstown 1, Co. Meath (excavated by Robert O’Hara of Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd), has been identified recently as Phocaean Red Slip Ware (PRSW) Form 3. The type is named after a major production centre at Phocaea, in western Turkey. The Collierstown sherd comes from a vessel manufactured there some 1,500 years ago.

Addressing uncertainty to make infrastructure safer
(2019)
González, Arturo
Abstract:
Some infrastructure is experiencing a fast rate of deterioration as a result of poor design/ construction/ maintenance or more demanding loads than anticipated, and many buildings, transport, and energy infrastructure are getting close to the ends of their design lives. There is a need for assessing the safety of these structures, i.e., to check that the probability of the structural response falling beyond an established threshold for a given period of time is acceptable. This calculation involves defining a number of input variables that include loading as well as structural properties such as moduli of elasticity, material strength, geometry, boundary conditions, etc.

Abstract:
Following the release of the film 'Philomena', the light has been shown on the untold stories of Irish American intercountry adoption. As the year of the gathering 2013 draws to a close, the people involved should be help to have their own gathering. This will not be achieved by many unless urgent goverment and religious organisation action is provided to help people in families seperated through adoption to find one another.

Abstract:
Company directors are faced with many dilemmas, which mean making difficult or awkward decisions, often on subjective issues. A dilemma has been defined as a "choice between two (or, loosely, more) alternatives either of which is (or appears) equally unfavourable”. Shades of Grey: Directors’ Dilemmas published by ICAS builds on the work of ICAS’ Ethics Committee in Shades of Grey: Ethical Dilemmas, which dealt with ethical dilemmas facing professional accountants.

Anti-RSV prophylaxis efficacy for infants and young children with cystic fibrosis in Ireland
(2015)
Linnane, Barry; Kiernan, Miranda G.; O'Connell, Nuala H.; Kearse, Linda; Dunne, Colum P.
Abstract:
Rationale: There is limited evidence supporting the routine use of palivizumab in paediatric cystic fibrosis (CF) patients to reduce respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and related hospitalisation. Despite this, anti-RSV prophylaxis is increasingly common. This is the first report from Ireland regarding palivizumab outcomes for children with CF, under 2 years old, despite the greatest prevalence of CF globally. Methods: An audit was performed at a tertiary hospital in Ireland’s mid-West to document all children with CF, <24 months old, who received palivizumab over a five year period and comparision made with all eligible children for the prior five year period who had not received the product (also CF patients). Palivizumab was administered to both cohorts in their first year of life. Hospitalisation rates were compared using Fisher’s exact test. Incidence of RSV and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection was recorded. Results: A total of 19 patients who received palivizumab w...
