A Case-study of Alcohol Consumption and of the Irish Public House in late Modernity. Social processes that manifest themselves as cultural, economic and political constraints.
(2013)
Cunningham, Bridget Mary
Abstract:
Social drinking in Ireland is acknowledged as a ‘traditional and a ‘cultural’ pursuit. The social world of the drinker however, is constructed in a complex way that extends beyond the cultural sphere. Movement of people, commodities and ideas (global processes) are central to contemporary life-style choices and leisure activities. The economy at any given time (economic processes) has a direct bearing on sales and purchases of alcohol. Regulation of the drinks industry and of drinking practices (political processes) construct a legal framework within which drinkers and drinks providers are obliged to operate. Owing to the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption, social research understandably, focuses on the ‘problematic’ aspects of alcohol misuse, while ‘moderate’ or ‘social’ drinking practices are largely overlooked. A sociological approach that would address this oversight calls for a ‘social process’ methodology that extends beyond the negative elements of alcohol and i...

A cause for consilience: Utilizing multiple genomic data types to resolve problematic nodes within Arthropoda and Ecdysozoa
(2012)
Campbell, Lahcen I.
Abstract:
A major turning point in the study of metazoan evolution was the recognition of the existence of the Ecdysozoa in 1997. This is a group of eight animal phyla (Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Loricifera, Kinorhyncha, Priapulida, Tardigrada, Onychophora and Arthropoda). Ecdysozoa is the most specious clade of animals to ever exist and the relationships among its eight phyla are still heatedly debated. Similarly also the relationships among the three sub-phyla (Chelicerata, Pancrustacea and Myriapoda) within the most important ecdysozoan phylum (the Arthropoda) are still debated. Indeed, the two major problems in ecdysozoan phylogeny refer to the relationships of Myriapoda within Arthropoda, and of Tardigrada within Ecdysozoa. Difficulties in ecdysozoan relationships resides in lineages characterized by rapid, deep divergences and subsequently long periods of divergent evolution. Phylogenetic signal to resolve the relationships of these lineages is diluted, increasing the likelihood of recover...

A centrifugal microfluidic platform for capturing, assaying and manipulation of beads and biological cells
(2012)
Burger, Robert
Abstract:
Microfluidics is deemed a field with great opportunities, especially for applications in medical diagnostics. The vision is to miniaturize processes typically performed in a central clinical lab into small, simple to use devices - so called lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems. A wide variety of concepts for liquid actuation have been developed, including pressure driven flow, electro-osmotic actuation or capillary driven methods. This work is based on the centrifugal platform (lab-on-a-disc). Fluid actuation is performed by the forces induced due to the rotation of the disc, thus eliminating the need for external pumps since only a spindle motor is necessary to rotate the disc and propel the liquids inside of the micro structures. Lab-on-a-disc systems are especially promising for point-of-care applications involving particles or cells due to the centrifugal force present in a rotating system. Capturing, assaying and identification of biological cells and microparticles are important operat...

A characterisation of cyclooxygenase activity in synaptic transmission and plasticity in the Hippocampus
(2006)
Cowley, Thelma R.
Abstract:
THESIS 7971
We used in vivo electrophysiological techniques to investigate the role played by cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymatic activity in synaptic transmission and plasticity. The use of selective pharmacological antagonists for the COX-1 and COX-2 isoforms enabled us to differentiate the functions of these two very similar enzymes in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampal formation, using a model of memory storage - long?term potentiation (LTP). This is a process whereby repeated firing of neurons by tetanic stimulation results in an increase in synaptic efficacy and a change in synaptic weights. It is this change in synaptic weight that is postulated to underlie memory storage. We have shown that exogenous replacement of a metabolite of COX activity, PGE2, directly into the hippocampus was sufficient to reverse the effects of the antagonism.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the social and linguistic contexts of Shen Congwen's literary works, with a particular focus on (1) the way his works enriched and stratified nationalist ideology/narratives and (2) the linguistic ideologies, the historical images and the literary images registered as semiotic processes which mediated the Hmong identity formation and differentiation in Xiangxi, China. A range of scholars have demonstrated that the modern novel is one of the main tools for propagating the practices and ideologies of standardized language under nationalism. In this dissertation I examine the nature of the nationalist ideologies embodied in the still very young Modern Mandarin literature. Accordingly I have chosen texts in which collisions of different aesthetic and poetic traditions in Chinese history can be readily observed. Through a detailed analysis of literary devices including the juxtaposition of time-space configurations, the interactions of diversified linguist...

A clinical and microbiological investigation of peri-implant infections
(2014)
Maguire, Fergal Rory
Abstract:
THESIS 10441
Osseointegrated oral implants are becoming increasingly more common in restorative dentistry as permanent replacements for lost or missing teeth. Peri-implant infections are a significant area of treatment need but the current evidence base for treatment is low. Peri-implant and periodontal infections share many similarities including clinical and pathological features and both have a microbial aetiology. There is growing evidence that patients with an increased susceptibility to periodontal disease have an increased susceptibility to peri-implantitis, very likely associated with oral bacterial microflora dynamics. The present study was undertaken to further investigate clinical and microbial aspects of peri-implantitis and periodontitis in a cohort of patients attending the Dublin Dental Unversity Hospital.

A clinical evaluation of remote ischaemic preconditioning for organ protection
(2016)
Healy, Donagh
Abstract:
Periprocedural complications are an issue for patients with cardiovascular disease. Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) may offer periprocedural organ protection. Although the proof of concept data underpinning RIPC are encouraging, there are few data regarding clinical endpoints. The first component of this thesis comprises a literature review that explores the history and current status of RIPC with a focus on cardiovascular interventions. This is followed by two systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The first review examined the role of RIPC in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and found a significant reduction in periprocedural myocardial infarction (MI) rates with RIPC, although the number of included patients was small. The second review examined the role of RIPC in the prevention of major clinical complications following cardiovascular surgery and found no significant effect although MI rates were reduced almost by half with RIPC. Heterogeneity of the studies and s...

Abstract:
THESIS 10146
Assay methods were successfully developed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography/Ultraviolet detection (HPLC/UV) in order to quantify amphotericin B (AMB) in patient plasma, ultrafiltrate (UF) and tracheal aspirate (TA) samples. Plasma and TA samples underwent solvent extraction and UF samples underwent solid phase extraction, prior to injection onto the HPLC column. AMB was detected at 405 nm. Plasma, UF and TA samples, collected from patients treated with ABLC, were shown to be stable when stored at -20?C until analysis. On day 1 of ABLC treatment, plasma samples were taken immediately before intravenous administration of ABLC and 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours after the start of the ABLC infusion. On subsequent days, pre- and post-ABLC infusion plasma samples were collected. Upon commencing or discontinuing Continuous Veno Venous Haemodiafiltration (CWHDF) during ABLC treatment, day 1 plasma sampling was repeated. On the cessation of ABLC treatment, plasma sam...

Abstract:
THESIS 8539
A randomised controlled trial (RCT) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of individualised GP prescribing feedback delivered as a postal bulletin (PB, n=50 practices) compared to PB plus academic detailing visits (AD, n=48 practices), in promoting ratbnal prescribing among a volunteer group of Irish GPs. The background changes in prescribing were examined using a quasi-experimental design, where prescribing practice from participant GPs (n=110) was compared to those GPs who declined to participant in the study i.e. non-participant GPs (NP, n=190). The aims of the interventions were to: (1) reduce the rate of overall antibiotic prescribing, (2) reduce second line antibiotic prescribing (co- amoxiclav & cephalosporins), (3) promote generic substitution for five targeted drugs and (4) increase prescribing of preventive therapies i.e. antiplatelet, statins and antihypertensive therapy in patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) or diabetes. A Combinatorial Approach to Nearly Uncoupled Markov Chains
(2011)
Tifenbach, Ryan M.
Abstract:
A discrete-time Markov chain on a state space S is a sequence of random variables X = fx0; x1; : : :g that take on values in S. A Markov chain is a model of a system which changes or evolves over time; the random variable xt is the state of the system at time t. A subset E S is referred to as an almost invariant aggregate if whenever xt 2 E, then with high probability xt+1 2 E, as well. That is, if there is a small positive value such that if xt 2 E then the probability that xt+1 =2 E is less than or equal to , then E is an almost invariant aggregate. If E is such an aggregate and xt 2 E, then the probability that xt+1; : : : ; xt+s 2 E is at least (1-E)s. A Markov chain tends to remain within its almost invariant aggregates (if it possesses any) for long periods of time. We refer to the Markov chain X as nearly uncoupled (with respect to some positive ) if its associated state space contains two or more disjoint almost invariant aggregates. Nearly uncoupled Markov chains are char...

A combined analytical approach to studying carbon dynamics in soils and sediments.
(2014)
Murphy, Brian
Abstract:
Studying the fate of organic carbon in soils and sediments is challenging due mainly to the multiplicity of relationships that exist not only between microbial consortia but between the organic components, nutrients and break down products. Understanding what is happening to carbon in microbial systems would provide valuable information for climate change studies, agricultural planning, pollution studies and more. In this project, a method was developed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GCMS), isotope ratio mass spectroscopy (IRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to track 13C in soil biomass. Phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA‘s) identified using GCMS were used as biomarkers to characterise microbial populations, IRMS data revealed which microbial groups were utilizing 13C labelled substrates. NMR allowed the transformations and fate of the carbon substrates to be determined. As the project progressed and developed the techniques were applied to studying organic ...

Abstract:
<p>Evaluation of a community dietetics intervention to improve oral nutritional supplement prescribing practices in the community. Background: Healthcare professionals working in the community do not always prescribe oral nutritional supplements (ONS) according to best practice guidelines and expenditure on ONS has increased. The aim of this study was to investigate ONS prescribing practices and to determine the impact of a community dietetics intervention on these practices and expenditure one year later. Methods: At baseline ONS prescribing practices were investigated by patient interview with a community dietitian. The intervention involved an education programme for general medical practitioners (GPs), practice nurses, nurses in nursing homes and community nurses together with the provision of a new community dietetics service. Changes in healthcare professionals‟ practices and knowledge were determined by selfadministered questionnaires immediately after and six months af...

A community ready for the future? A social marketing study of Meals on Wheels Services in Ireland
(2015)
FitzGerald, Christine
Abstract:
This research, undertaken in the Irish Meals on Wheels (MOW) community, seeks to address the challenges associated with MOW stakeholders' behaviours through the application of a community social marketing model: the Community Readiness Model (CRM). Building on an increasing recognition of the value of community-led approaches, this research examines behaviour change from the perspective of a community, rather than the traditional focus on the individual, encompassing the environment in which behaviours occur. The application of the CRM in this research facilitates a systematic process of assessing and understanding the behaviours of key stakeholders involved in MOW services in Ireland, shaped by consultation with older people at different stages of MOW service use (current, former and potential MOW users). Through adapting this multi-perspective approach, this research moves beyond individual behaviour change to examine multi-level change and social implications. Furthermore,...

A compact and scalable encoding for updating XML based on node labeling schemes
(2013)
O'Connor, Martin F.
Abstract:
The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has been adopted as the new standard for data exchange on the World Wide Web. As the rate of adoption increases, there is an ever pressing need to store, query and update XML in its native format, thereby eliminating the overhead of parsing and transforming XML in and out of various data formats. However, the hierarchical, ordered and semi-structured properties of the tree structure underlying the XML data model presents many challenges to updating XML. In particular, many of the tree labeling schemes were designed to solve a particular problem or provide a particular feature, often at the expense of other important features. In this dissertation, we identify the core properties that are representative of the desirable characteristics of a good dynamic labeling scheme for XML. We focus on four features central to the outstanding problems in existing dynamic labeling schemes; namely a compact label encoding, scalability, deleted node label re...

Abstract:
Twelve designated disadvantaged secondary schools were involved in the research, which looked at the different approaches for dealing with inappropriate student behaviour. Six of the schools are currently involved with the National Behaviour Support Service (NBSS) in the piloting of the Behaviour Support Classrooms (BSCs) for seriously disruptive students. For comparative purposes six other schools who did not have this additional resource were studied, to determine how they go about dealing with student misbehaviour. The aim of my study is to evaluate whether the BSCs are the best way forward for schools experiencing high levels of disruptive student behaviour, and to determine how the schools without this facility manage to deal with serious behavioural incidents. My research participants included principals, year heads and personnel working in the BSCs. After considering the different research paradigms, I decided that pragmatism was the most suitable for answering my research qu...

A comparative study of fundamental rights in South Africa and Ireland with specific emphasis on human dignity
(2011)
Hughes, Anne
Abstract:
THESIS 9698.1
THESIS 9698.2
Since the post-apartheid constitutional era connmenced almost two decades ago, there have been many progressive judicial decisions on fundamental rights in South Africa. By contrast over the same period, the longer-established Irish legal system has gone through a phase of deference to the separation of powers resulting in a more restricted interpretation of human rights. As no comprehensive analysis of the comparison between fundamental rights in South Africa and Ireland has hitherto been undertaken, this thesis aims to address that subject. The thesis involves substantial doctrinal research and a literature review focusing primarily on fundamental rights in South Africa, Ireland and internationally, but extending to other countries and regional systems. Case law and legislation are noted, and new developments tracked. The conclusions result from deductive and inductive reasoning, refined by critical evaluations.

Abstract:
Title: A comparative study of the effect of one-suture and suture-less techniques on post-operative complications following third molar surgery. Author: Dr Saleh Alkadi BDS(Hons), MFDS RCSI, NBDE Objective: Lower third molar surgery remains one of the most common surgical procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It has its own risks, and postoperative complications, that influence the recovery period, and affect a patient?s quality of life. It has been suggested that wound closure technique is an operative factor that influences early post-operative complications, after lower third molar surgery. This is a comparative study that investigates two secondary closure techniques; partial closure using one suture and the suture-less technique, after using a modified buccal envelope flap for lower third molar surgery. This study aims to determine which of the two secondary closure techniques assessed is superior in improving wound healing, and reducing post-operative complications,...

A comparative test of Inglehart's theory of postmaterialism
(2004)
McKenzie, Kenneth
Abstract:
Ronald Inglehart’ s theory of postmaterialism contends that since the late nineteen sixties, a new type of politics is progressively taking over from the ‘old politics’ system. Inglehart’s case is built on steady changes in the postmaterialist index (PMI), where changes in public values are regularly assessed. Whereas ‘old politics’ consisted of debates over the place and scale o f redistribution and pitted class-based parties of left and right against each other, the new politics pivots on lifestyle issues, which do not fit clearly into the left and right camps. This thesis looks at the political implications of this detected value change, gathering new and existing criticisms of Inglehart’s model, and empirically tests his claims by means of a small-n case study with France and Ireland as comparators. We test four hypotheses derived from his works: (i) that class is less predictive of vote choice; (ii) that voter discontent has been increasing; (iii) that new parties have prospere...
