A comparison of climate and vegetation dynamics in central Ireland and NW Spain since the mid-Holocene
(2008)
Stefanini, Bettina S.
Abstract:
THESIS 8585
This research investigates chmate and vegetation dynamics in two Atlantic regions; central Ireland and NW Spain. Atmospheric and oceanic processes influence climate and hence vegetation through forcing factors operating at millennial time scales. But the extent of their influence over shorter periods is less well understood. Climate, however, is only one factor affecting vegetation change and increasing anthropogenic pressure may mask its influence during the late Holocene. Here climate and vegetation history are inferred through proxy indicators and examined in the light of archaeological and historical data.

A Comparison of the effects of Sensory-Integration Therapy and Behavioural Intervention on Challenging Behaviour and Academic Performance with Children with Autism
(2013)
Lydon, Helena
Abstract:
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder and presents as a complex and often puzzling category of conditions. Parents of children with ASD face a dilemma when selecting the most efficient and effective treatment for their child. Families of children with ASD use a combination of both scientifically validated and non-validated treatments with children with ASD. This thesis evaluates Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT), one of the most popular non-validated treatments for ASD, by reviewing its effectiveness and analysing variables related to parental choice of the intervention. In addition, research is presented that compares the effectiveness of SIT to Behavioural Intervention (BI), an empirically validated treatment, in altering challenging behaviour and improving academic performance. Chapter 2 conducted a systematic review on past research using SIT and Sensory Integration techniques with children with ASD. Chapter 3 surveyed a sample of parents or carers of c...

A comparison of various methods of assessing salivary flow in normal and xerostomic subjects
(2006)
Ibieyou, Najia
Abstract:
THESIS 8434
Saliva is produced by the three major paired salivary glands and minor salivary glands. Alterations in the quantity and quality of saliva have adverse effects on the oral cavity and influence patient quality of Hfe. How much saliva is needed to differentiate between a normal salivary flow and salivary hypofunction is debatable and the literature indicates contradicting results. Diy mouth is a common clinical problem, especially among elderly patients. However, it may also be found in younger individuals suffering from a variety of diseases and in patients on various medications or who have had radiotherapy of the oral cavity and neck region. The present study was designed: i) to examine the reproducibility of methods of salivary flow measurements for minor salivary glands and for whole saliva, both stimulated and unstimulated, in normal healthy adults, ii) to examine the relationships between different methods for the measurement of salivary flow, for minor salivary ...

A comprehensive description of the competencies required for the performance of an ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blockade
(2014)
O'Sullivan, Owen
Abstract:
We addressed four research questions, each relating to the training and assessment of the competencies associated with the performance of ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus blockade (USgABPB). These were: (i) What are the most important determinants of learning of USgABPB? (ii) What is USgABPB? What are the errors most likely to occur when trainees learn to perform this procedure? (iii) How should end-user input be applied to the development of a novel USgABPB simulator? (iv) Does structured simulation based training influence novice learning of the procedure positively? We demonstrated that the most important determinants of learning USgABPB are: (a) Access to a formal structured training programme. (b) Frequent exposure to clinical learning opportunity in an appropriate setting (c) A clinical learning opporunity requires an appropriate patient, trainee and teacher being present at the same time, in an appropriate environment. We carried out a comprehensive description of t...

A computational and experimental study of protein localisation determinants in the mammalian endomembrane system
(2015)
Kranjc, Tilen
Abstract:
The subcellular localisation of a protein, together with its sequence and structure, provide the first information about its function. Although several approaches for determining localisation exist, the most widely used experimental methods involve the overexpression of a GFP-tagged construct of the protein in a cultured cell or staining the endogenous protein with specific fluorescently-labelled antibodies. Computational sequence-based localisation predictors have been developed, and are of value, but they are still limited in their predictive power. Considering the now extensive use of imaging approaches, it is therefore unsurprising that much effort has been put into the development of automated image analysis methods to classify localisation. Image classifiers are typically trained on ground truth data, which introduces certain bias. The aim of modern algorithms is to eliminate human interaction and instead perform unsupervised classification of the images. The study presented i...

A computational approach to understanding the deNO? properties of Rhodium metal
(2015)
Carey, John J.
Abstract:
THESIS 10498
The emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx, x = 1, 2) from combustion engines is a significant contributor to acid rain, smog and the enhanced greenhouse effect. The environmental damage these polluntants have caused, as well as human health concerns, has led to governmental regulations aimed at reducing NOx emissions. As the decomposition of NOx gases (deNOx) is difficult due to a high activation barrier, and catalytic technologies have been developed to assist in their subsequent breakdown. These technologies use rhodium, palladium and platinum precious metals employed on oxide suppports. where 111 facets are the dominant surface on the metal clusters. Rhodium is known to be the most effective metal for NOx reduction flue to facile breaking of the NO bond; however, it is becoming increasingly scarce and thus progressively more expensive to use. This has led to significant interest in rhodium free technologies, motivating research to develop alternative, more cost effect...

A computational investigation of the laser bonding of balloon catheters
(2015)
Ryan, Enda
Abstract:
The balloon catheters produced by Boston Scientific are manufactured using a laser bonding process. The behaviour of the materials during this laser welding process is not very well understood. In this work a computational model of this process was created which will help predict the behaviour of the materials during bonding and will increase understanding of the laser bonding process. The two parts being bonded are cylindrical and are both made of a thermoplastic polymer called PEBAX®. During the bonding process, these cylindrical parts are surrounded by a heat-shrink tubing which applies a pressure to the PEBAX® parts when heated. The heat and pressure cause the PEBAX® to melt and flow. Modelling the heat-shrink tubing and the melt flow during the laser welding process are key aims of this work. A thermal model of the process was created by modelling the laser absorption and heat transfer through the assembly. This was compared with previous work and validated with experimental...

Roznovat, Irina-Afrodita
Abstract:
Cancer, a class of diseases, characterized by abnormal cell growth, has demonstrably high impact on human life: complex lifestyle changes, caused by malignancy, affect not only patients, but also family and friends. Cancer development has been linked to genetic and epigenetic abnormalities that affect the regulation of key genes that control cellular mechanisms. These alterations, which target stem cells, may be different or less immediately adverse from one person to another, as various risk factors are cumulative and variable in effect. However, a major issue in cancer research is the lack of precise information on tumour pathways; therefore the delineation of these and of the processes underlying disease proliferation is an important area of investigation. Here, we present a hybrid computational model following a multi-scale approach, which has been developed for colorectal cancer dynamics by linking information from micromolecular to cellular and tissue levels, (e.g. epigenetic ...

A computational study of the mammalian subiculum
(2007)
Delany, David Ian
Abstract:
THESIS 8220
The subiculum occupies a central position as the mediator of information flow between the hippocampal memory system and both cortical and subcortical brain structures. To further the goal of understanding how the subiculum fulfils this critical role, we constructed detailed biophysically realistic computational models of subicular principal neurons. In chapter III we developed Hodgkin-Huxley and Markov models of a total of fourteen sodium, potassium, calcium, and mixed cation currents that are prominent in pyramidal cells of the hippocampal complex. In chapter IV active models of subicular principal cells were created by selectively incorporating subsets of these currents into models of passive subicular membranes. Mechanisms for an unprecedentedly wide range of electrophysiological features (EPFs) of subicular pyramidals were simulated. These included inward and outward membrane rectification, M- and H-resonance, burst and single spiking, frequency-dependent bursti...

A conceptual history of the idea of self-causation: from Plato's forms to Hegel's concrete universal
(2016)
Parashkevova, Desislava
Abstract:
The dissertation is a historical-cum-conceptual examination of the idea of self-causation (causa sui). In the Western metaphysical tradition, self-causation has been understood in two ways: (i.) as an individual existentâs spontaneous self-creation and internal causal or ontological determination (what we term ontological self-causation), and/ or (ii.) as an individualâs logical identity with an essence that uniquely characterizes it and out of which all of its features issue (logical self-causation). In sum, self-causation is (i.) the internal reason for an individualâs existence, and/ or (ii) the internal reason for an individualâs individuality. The question whether there really are existents self-caused in at least one of these two senses â and what precisely we can know or say about them â has, in one form or another, occupied metaphysicians of all historical epochs. Our aim is to distil the ideaâs logical structure and explanatory scope through philosophical eng...

Abstract:
THESIS 10588
The work in this thesis is aimed towards exploring the edge case application of the Langreth-Lundqvist vdW density functional (vdW-DF). The increasing popularity of the vdW-DF functional has resulted in its application across a wide variety of systems. Some of these systems are at the limit of the approximations made in the derivation of the functional, so called edge case systems. Although the vdW-DF functional may break down when applied to these edge case systems, through careful exploration of these systems we gain a greater understanding of not only the functional but also ways within which it can be improved.

A consistent Mathematical Framework for linear feedback systems using distributions.
(2006)
Ragnoli, Emanuele
Abstract:
In this thesis, when the signals are either discrete time or continuous time signals, three different Mathematical Formalisms for feedback systems are investigated. The first one, the Standard Formalism, uses mathematical elements that are adopted from the conventional analysis for feedback systems (conventional analysis as in [1]). It is shown how consistency can be regained, but with the effect of severely restricting the class of signals. Moreover, it is shown under which conditions the Standard Formalism becomes a consistent Framework. The second one, the Generalised Formalism, extends the class of systems but lacks of a transform domain analysis. The third one, a Framework using Distributions, is shown to be consistent. Moreover, the class of signals does not need any restriction and a transform domain analysis can be performed. The class of signals is the space of distributions, or generalised functions. Being those an extension of the concept of ”classical” function, the trad...

A Constructivist Exploration of the Teacher's Role: understanding the policy practice navigation between: Pedagogy, Professionalism & Vocationalism
(2010)
Ryan, Michael F.
Abstract:
This constructivist grounded theory study, explores the role of the second level teacher in contemporary Ireland. It investigates how the officially espoused role of the teacher translates into action in the negotiated environments of practice. The study yielded three significant constructs that penetrate the reality of a teaching life. The three constructs emerged organically from an analysis of research-participant reflections regarding their practice as teachers. These three interwoven constructs provide the scaffolding for the grounded theory findings: i. pedagogy under pressure, ii. teachers navigating a pathway between old and new professionalism iii. vocationalism and pockets of wonderful things While each of the three constructs has its own discourse and associated web of meaning, there is also evidence of an over arching climate that weaves its influence across the playing out of each. This climate is identified as one of intensification. The intensification of teaching and...

A Contribution to Metric Diophantine Approximation : the Lebesgue and Hausdorff Theories
(2014)
Adiceam, Faustin
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the theory of Diophantine approximation from the point of view of measure theory. After the prolegomena which conclude with a number of conjectures set to understand better the distribution of rational points on algebraic planar curves, Chapter 1 provides an extension of the celebrated Theorem of Duffin and Schaeffer. This enables one to set a generalized version of the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture. Chapter 2 deals with the topic of simultaneous approximation on manifolds, more precisely on polynomial curves. The aim is to develop a theory of approximation in the so far unstudied case when such curves are not defined by integer polynomials. A new concept of so–called “liminf sets” is then introduced in Chapters 3 and 4 in the framework of simultaneous approximation of independent quantities. In short, in this type of problem, one prescribes the set of integers which the denominators of all the possible rational approximants of a given vector have to belo...

A control theoretic approach to mitigate viral escape in HIV
(2011)
Hernandez Vargas, Esteban Abelardo
Abstract:
A very important scientific advance was the identification of HIV as a causative agent for AIDS. HIV infection typically involves three main stages: a primary acute infection, a long asymptomatic period and a final increase in viral load with a simultaneous collapse in healthy CD4+T cell count during which AIDS appears. Motivated by the worldwide impact of HIV infection on health and the difficulties to test in vivo or in vitro the different hypothesis which help us to understand the infection, we study the problem from a control theoretic perspective. We present a deterministic ordinary differential equation model that is able to represent the three main stages in HIV infection. The mechanism behind this model suggests that macrophages could be long-term latent reservoirs for HIV and may be important in the progression to AIDS. To avoid or slow this progression to AIDS, antiretroviral drugs were introduce in the late eighties. However, these drugs are not always successful causing ...

A control-theoretic approach to dynamic optimization of metabolic networks
(2010)
Oyarzun Rodriguez, Diego Antonio
Abstract:
The characterization of general control principles that underpin metabolic dynamics is an important part of systems analysis in biology. It has been long argued that many biological regulatory mechanisms have evolved so as to optimize cellular adaptation in response to external stimuli. In this thesis we use an optimal control framework to solve dynamic optimization problems associated with metabolic dynamics. The analysis is based on a nonlinear control-ane model of a metabolic network with the enzyme concentrations as control inputs. We consider the optimization of time-dependent enzyme concentrations to activate an unbranched network and reach a prescribed metabolic ux. The solution accounts for time-resource optimality under constraints in the total enzymatic abundance. We identify a temporal pattern in the solution that is consistent with previous experimental and numerical observations. Our analysis suggests that this behaviour may appear in a broader class of networks than p...

A coordination model for global software development teams

Deshpande, Sadhana
Abstract:
Over the last two decades of globalisation, the software industry has witnessed the emergence of Global Software Development (GSD). Various business motives have driven software companies to outsource software development projects to software companies based in low cost economies. Given the highly competitive environment in which software companies operate, the client and the vendor have to equip themselves to operate successfully across national and international boundaries. Software development carried out at various geographical locations across boundaries is mainly impeded by distance which can be categorized as exterior and interior. The exterior distance is formed due to geographical, cultural and temporal differences while the interior distance is created due to organisational, technological and knowledge differences. The outcome of these distances is that they draw out primarily communication, coordination, culture and control issues which can spiral out of control if not re...

A corpus-based investigation of some pragmatic politeness features utilised during question time in the national parliament of Ireland
(2013)
O'Donnell, Declan
Abstract:
This research investigates some politeness features used by Irish politicians during Question Time (QT) in the national parliament of Ireland, through the prism of some corpus linguistics tools and an examination of some aspects of facework utilised in that setting. It also investigates the feasibility of building a corpus from data drawn from the official parliamentary record in Ireland. The study draws on approaches and theories from politeness theory, language variation and pragmatics to frame the analysis of six months of Dáil QTs, providing a database of 950,000 words of transcribed data, which is examined using quantitative and qualitative corpus-based techniques. The guiding question is to determine how the use of certain politeness features and strategies in Dáil Eireann differ from usage of the same features and strategies in a comparable parliamentary setting, the House of Commons in London, focusing in depth on two specific features; the use of “please” and “thank you”, a...

A corpus-based study of translator style: Oeser’s and Orth-Guttmann’s German translations of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and Damned
(2005)
Winters, Marion
Abstract:
The present thesis comprises a corpus-based study of translator style, comparing two German translations of the novel The Beautiful and Damned by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The translations, by Hans-Christian Oeser and Renate Orth-Guttmann, were both published in 1998. The study isolates linguistic features in which the individual styles of the translators manifest themselves on the textual level and investigates the influence these microlevel linguistic choices have on the macrolevel of the novel. An electronic corpus was compiled, comprising The Beautiful and Damned and its two translations, both entitled Die Schdnen und Verdammten. An initial data-driven exploration of the corpus suggested that the use of modal particles could be a feature of translator style. A quantitative analysis was carried out to discover potential patterns of the use of modal particles by the translators, and the results showed that while both translators use modal particles to the extent and in the general...

A Cost-Saving and Innovative Best-Practices Green IT Framework for Small

Abstract:
The notion of Green IT in a mirco, small or medium sized company (SME) is not well explored in current literature. The Green IT guidelines or the recommended activities outlined in literature are often more applicable to large organisations that have extensive resources to implement these Green initiatives. The purpose of this study was to develop a Green IT framework suitable for SMEs. In the process, the study sought to understand the levels of awareness of Green IT that currently exists among SMEs and find out about the current adoption rates of Green IT among SMEs. The study sought to also address potential barriers to and benefits of Green IT. Data was collected using three methods: observation, interviews and questionnaires. The study demonstrated that as of August 2009, the level of awareness among SMEs regarding Green IT is low. Just over half of the SMEs surveyed, admit to not knowing, what practices belong to the Green IT category. SMEs in general are slow to adopt Green I...

A critical (auto) ethnographic study of deaf people's experience of education and culture in Ireland.
(2016)
Abstract:
At the heart of this thesis is the methodological and theoretical framework in which to conduct a study of deaf people’s experience of education and culture in Ireland. Methodologically, the research design is critical auto-ethnography which allows this researcher to self-reflexively engage in the research process to explore key issues and themes in deaf education arising from the narratives of the research participants’ educational experiences. The postmodern theoretical framework is located in the study to portray a diversity of perspectives including that of the researched and the researcher. Since the 1950s many deaf people in Ireland faced barriers to education. They also faced internal and external pressure to change their ways of knowing and understanding of the world to become ‘normal’ and more acceptable to non-deaf people. To date, the majority of the literature devoted to deaf education has been written from the dominant non-deaf perspective detailing the education system...

A Critical Analysis of Grand Corruption with Reference to International Human Rights and International Criminal Law: The Case of Nigeria
(2017)
Anaedozie, Florence
Abstract:
<p>Grand corruption remains a domestic crime that is not directly addressed by the international human rights and international criminal law regulatory frameworks. Scholars argue that the right to a society free of corruption is an inherent human right because dignity, equality and participation significantly depend upon it. The academic discourse linking corruption to the violation of human rights is relatively new, no regional or global human rights instrument has referred specifically to corruption while anti-corruption treaties rarely refer to human rights. There is also insufficient research within this area, establishing the direct causal link between high-level corruption and systemic human rights violations. Therefore, using qualitative interpretative analysis, this thesis aims to address this lacuna with reference to the case of Nigeria by interrogating case law, treaties, and other relevant legal human rights instruments. Consequently, the project placed the relevant...

A critical analysis of risk and volatility modeling in the financial markets
(2012)
Moloney, Catherine (Kitty)
Abstract:
In light of the recent financial crisis, the limitations of current risk estimation techniques have become apparent. The purpose of this thesis is to see if nonlinear tools and techniques can facilitate our understanding of the financial markets, particularly during times of heightened turbulence. This is done by comparing econometric and nonlinear tools to analyse a number of asset classes, including equities, bonds and credit default swaps during periods of heightened turbulence. We analyse indices as well as individual corporate and sovereign securities. The methodology is to compare the linear stochastic framework (in particular the linear Gaussian framework) to the nonlinear time series framework. In essence the focus of the thesis is on the treatment of irregularity by these two very different frameworks. The linear stochastic framework treats irregularity as exogenous from the linear system, and expresses it in terms of probability distribution functions. The nonlinear time s...
