A critical edition of Mittelirische Verslehren III
(2007)
McLaughlin, Roisin
Abstract:
THESIS 8268
This thesis consists of a critical edition and translation of a Middle Irish metrical tract known as Mittelirische Verslehren III (hereafter MV III). The tract is an important source of information on rhyming syllabic verse in the Middle Irish period. It consists of two hundred and nine stanzas which illustrate various types of metres, ranging from common metres to more complex metrical forms, many of which are not represented in the standard works of reference. The metres are classified into four sections as gn?thaisti ?common metres? (??2-127), gn?tha med?nda ?moderately well-known? (??128-47), anaichinti ?unfamiliar? (??148-66) and ?coitchenna ?uncommon? (??167-210). The stanzas cited as illustrations cover a wide range of subject matter, including panegyric, satiric, religious and topographical material. At present, the text is available only in a diplomatic edition by Rudolf Thurneysen (1891, 1-182). This is based on two manuscripts: Royal Irish Academy MS 23 P ...

Abstract:
THESIS 10918
This thesis is a critical edition of the Old and Middle Irish versions of Aided Chonchobair ?The violent death of Conchobar?. AC belongs to the aided category of tales of the Ulster Cycle. It has been transmitted in four recensions, A, B, C and D respectively, copies of which are preserved in a total of eight manuscripts. Despite largely diplomatic editions and translations of all four recensions of the tale having been published in The Death-Tales of the Ulster Heroes in 1906, Kuno Meyer was unaware of the existence of a copy preserved in NLS 72.1.5, and only became aware of RIA C i 2 and Laud Misc. 610 at a later date.

A critical examination and evaluation of the place of science in the Irish transition year
(2011)
Hayes, Sarah
Abstract:
The transition year is a unique year in the Irish education system, which has undergone much change since it started in 1974/5, and is now a well established part of Irish schools, being offered by three-quarters of schools, and taken by over half of the pupils. The transition year is a syllabus-free year, governed by some broad guidelines, unlike the Irish school system as a whole, which is highly standardised and examined. As a small country within the European Union, Ireland is well placed as a base for many science-based industries and science and technology have become a major focus of government policy, and hence science education is becoming increasingly important in Ireland. Like other developed nations Ireland is experiencing low numbers taking the physical sciences, but has disproportionately high numbers taking the biological sciences. The unique nature of the transition year offers schools and teachers an unprecedented opportunity to offer a relevant, interesting and inn...

A critical examination of talent development systems in high performance sport
(2015)
Algar, Lynne
Abstract:
Talent development (TD) in high performance sport is a complex process of interacting genetic and experiential factors (Farrow, Baker, & MacMahon, 2013). In current practice, there appears to be a considerable gap between what research informs us we need for successful TD and what is applied in a real world setting (Martindale et al., 2007). Consequently, if athletes fail to acquire essential psychological characteristics or learn proficient fundamental movement skills then they may never maximise their potential and dropout from sport prematurely. The reasons underlying this apparent loss in translation between research and applied sports science may be due to a lack of understanding of the TD processes and inexperienced coaches operating at an under-age level when the fundamentals of sports performance should be acquired. National Governing Bodies (NGBs) may also be guilty of attempting to use a generic ‘one-size fits all’ approach to TD before acknowledging and addressing the...

A critical investigation into the spray-drying of hydroxyapatite powder for thermal spray applications
(2006)
Murtaza, Qasim
Abstract:
This work examines the investigation of the spray drying process of Hydroxyapatite powder (HA) used as a thermal spray deposit in the application of orthopaedic femoral implants. In this research, the Niro- Minor™ mixed spray dryer was used for both modelling and experimental studies. The process parameters investigated included HA slurry viscosity, temperature, and air flowrate. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling and validation of the spray drying of HA powder was performed. An analysis of the spray drying of the HA slurry, was performed using the UMETRI AB, MODDE 7 software. For the CFD analysis, the Spray dryer was divided into the three parts; two-fluid nozzle, the drying chamber, and atomisation. The Standard K-e, Reliable K-e and Reynolds Stress Model models were used to predict velocity profiles of the air, feed pipe of the two external nozzle and temperature profile for the drying chamber. Different model results were compared, studied and compared with experimenta...

A critical search for the ‘self’ in adult education: Bourdieuian insights into transformative possibilities
(2016)
Yelverton Halpin, Mary
Abstract:
This study investigates the ‘self’ of six Irish working-class women, all parenting alone and all returned to the field of adult education. Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, field and capital are the backdrop for the study of the ‘self’, which is viewed through his lens. This study commenced in September 2012 and concluded in August 2014, in a small urban educational setting in an Irish city. All of the women in the study are single parents, most of them did not complete second level education, and none of them had experienced adult or third level education. Their ages vary from 30 to 55 years. The study pursues the women’s motivations for returning to education, the challenges they faced throughout the journey, and their experiences, views and perspectives of Adult Education. The methodology chosen for this research is critical eethnography, and as an emerging ethnographer, I was able to view the phenomena from both an emic (inside) and an etic (outside) perspective. A Critique of Immaterial Labour: Dublin's Independent Music Scene as a Strategic Site of Investigation
(2014)
Gill, Susan
Abstract:

This study critiques the autonomist concept of immaterial labour. Both diagnostic and prescriptive, the term immaterial labour was coined by Lazzarato (1997), but became synonymous with Hardt and Negri’s (2001a; 2004; 2010) ‘Empire’ trilogy. They describe post-industrial labour as characterised by the production of immaterial commodities such as culture, creativity and information. Seeing it as a hegemonic form of production, accelerationist Marxists Hardt and Negri (ibid.) suggest that immaterial labour has the radical potential to restructure socio-economic life, resulting in spontaneous communism. However, their thesis has been subject to critique as it homogenises post-industrial production and lacks empirical engagement. This study seeks to address this deficit by using Dublin’s independent music scene as a strategic site of investigation. Independent music production became a logical site of enquiry, as its emphasis on immanent cooperation, urban life and autonomy are...

A critique of the legal protections afforded to the matrimonial home in Ireland: lessons from British Columbia
(2012)
O'Sullivan, Kathryn
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyses the legal protection afforded to non-owning spouses in Ireland in relation to the family home through the different stages of a marital relationship – inter vivos, on death and on divorce. Although the property rights of spouses continue to be held on the basis of title and are not automatically modified by marriage, some modifications to the separate property regime have taken place through the intervention of equity and the legislature which mitigate the harshness associated with it, in particular, in relation to the ownership, control and occupation of the family home. This thesis questions whether these interventions are sufficient or whether further protection is needed for non-owning spouses in relation to this important asset. To this end, the thesis considers what lessons may be learned from the law of British Columbia, Canada on this issue. What emerges is that, in certain circumstances, considerable protection is currently afforded by Irish...

A Cross-Layer Modification to the DSR Routing Protocol in Wireless Mesh Networks
(2010)
Ramadhan, Mustafa
Abstract:

A cross-layer modification to the DSR routing protocol that finds high throughput paths in WMNs has been introduced in this work. The Access Efficiency Factor (AEF) has been introduced in this modification as a local congestion avoidance metric for the DSR routing mechanism as an alternative to the hop count (Hc) metric. In this modification, the selected path is identified by finding a path with the highest minimum AEF (max_min_AEF) value. The basis of this study is to compare the performance of the Hc and max_min_AEF as routing metrics for the DSR protocol in WMNs using the OPNET modeler. Performance comparisons between max_min_AEF, Metric Path (MP), and the well known ETT metrics are also carried out in this work. The results of this modification suggest that employing the max_min_AEF as a routing metric outperforms the Hc, ETT, and MP within the DSR protocol in WMNs in terms of throughput. This is because the max_min_AEF is based upon avoiding directing traffic through ...

A cross-layer quality-oriented energy-efficient scheme for multimedia delivery in wireless local area networks
(2014)
Song, Yang
Abstract:
Wireless communication technologies, although emerged only a few decades ago, have grown fast in both popularity and technical maturity. As a result, mobile devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) or smart phones equipped with embedded wireless cards have seen remarkable growth in popularity and are quickly becoming one of the most widely used communication tools. This is mainly determined by the flexibility, convenience and relatively low costs associated with these devices and wireless communications. Multimedia applications have become by far one of the most popular applications among mobile users. However this type of application has very high bandwidth requirements, seriously restricting the usage of portable devices. Moreover, the wireless technology involves increased energy consumption and consequently puts huge pressure on the limited battery capacity which presents many design challenges in the context of battery powered devices. As a consequence, power managemen...

A Cultural Heritage Management Methodology for Assessing the Vulnerabilities of Archaeological Sites to Predicted Climate Change Focuing on Ireland's Two World Heritage Sites
(2014)
Daly, Caithleen
Abstract:

The affect climate change will have on cultural heritage preservation poses a global challenge and is being addressed by international organisations such as UNESCO and ICOMOS. The aim of this doctoral research is to assist heritage managers in understanding the implications of climate change for the sites in their care. It addresses the question of how to approach the assessment and measurement of climate change impacts on cultural heritage. The potential future effects of climate change on cultural heritage in temperate climates are discussed and current international practice in the management of climate change impacts on cultural heritage is investigated. The results reveal several issues currently of concern amongst practitioners; namely ‘what’ to monitor, ‘how’ to monitor and how to interpret results when dealing with the highly complex and long-term issue of climate change impacts. A Vulnerability Framework for site based evaluations is defined and adapted specificall...

A Delphi study of the influences on innovation adoption and process evolution in a large open source project: the case of Debian
(2010)
Krafft, Martin F.
Abstract:
The Debian Project is possibly the largest FLOSS project, but its processes have not scaled in relation to its growth and complexity. Many aspects of daily tasks require the volunteer contributors to expend time on repetitive, minimallyintegrated tasks, leaving less energy for progress and innovation. Techniques that support collaboration and foster efficiency exist, but they are not being adopted as readily as could be. As a cultural insider and active participant in the Debian Project, I sought to bridge this gap through the identification of the influences that shape the adoption behaviour of contributors to the project. I conducted a Delphi study with a panel of 21 carefully selected Debian Contributors, and we found 24 influences, which are supported by numerous arguments from the participants’ study. We established and defined the role and scope of each influence, explored its facets, and argued as to its effects. For instance, we found that (a) adopters require multiple persp...

A derived relations analysis of the aetiology, maintenance and treatment of fear and anxiety in human participants
(2015)
Gannon, Steven
Abstract:
In the present thesis a literature review revealed that further investigation is required into cases where clinical fears and anxiety exist but cannot be traced to a specific conditioning event in a person’s life. The processes of stimulus equivalence, derived relational responding and the derived transfer of functions effect in particular, were identified as having significant potential for the explanation of such “unconditioned” clinical anxiety. Whilst early studies dealt with anxiety as mere avoidance, this idea was eventually challenged. It was since proposed that avoidance only becomes problematic when it eliminates contact with appetitive events and/or puts the individual in contact with aversive events. In other words, avoidance is problematic when conflicting contingencies supporting one or both of these consequences are present. The current research aimed to generate a procedure to investigate precisely this conflicting contingency phenomenon, i.e., approachavoidance confl...

A detailed study of desalination exergy models and their application to a semi-conductor ultra-pure water plant
(2011)
Fitzsimons, Lorna
Abstract:
Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) is a high energy raw material used in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. However, to date, the production of UPW has received little focus in terms of energy consumption mitigation. Exergy analysis is perhaps the most powerful tool available in the search for industrial energy efficiency. The objective of this research was to develop an approach for the exergy analysis of Semiconductor UPW plants in an effort to characterise energy consumption. However, following an extensive literature review, it became evident that several desalination exergy models were in current use, and it was unclear which model was the most appropriate, presenting a serious challenge to researchers seeking to apply exergy analysis to water purification processes. A detailed study and comparison of two predominant desalination exergy models was undertaken to determine the most appropriate model for UPW and other water purification applications. Neither of these models was deemed ...

Abstract:
Environment and health-related concerns mean that pedal-bicycles as an alternative mode of urban transport are gaining ground, with study of motorised/non-motorised traffic mix a topic of practical interest in transportation science and traffic modelling. This thesis reports on a simulation model, developed for heterogeneous traffic on city networks with AD HOC lane-sharing, characteristic of Dublin streets. While based on simple cellular automaton rules, the vehicle movement model also accounts for vehicle type heterogeneity and network-specific factors, including the resolution of conflicts and effects of driver decisions on movement dynamics. The model has been implemented as an agent-based simulation framework. Its spatial component is based on a modular design that facilitates straightforward scenario configuration and scalability. In order to perform large network simulations, the framework has been adapted for parallel processing. Issues of both static and dynamic load balanc...

A distributed architecture for the monitoring and analysis of time series data
(2015)
O'Reilly, Ruairi Donagh
Abstract:
It is estimated that the quantity of digital data being transferred, processed or stored at any one time currently stands at 4.4 zettabytes (4.4 × 2 70 bytes) and this figure is expected to have grown by a factor of 10 to 44 zettabytes by 2020. Exploiting this data is, and will remain, a significant challenge. At present there is the capacity to store 33% of digital data in existence at any one time; by 2020 this capacity is expected to fall to 15%. These statistics suggest that, in the era of Big Data, the identification of important, exploitable data will need to be done in a timely manner. Systems for the monitoring and analysis of data, e.g. stock markets, smart grids and sensor networks, can be made up of massive numbers of individual components. These components can be geographically distributed yet may interact with one another via continuous data streams, which in turn may affect the state of the sender or receiver. This introduces a dynamic causality, which further complic...

A dynamic assessment of adaptive capacity to climate change: A case study of water management in Makondo, Uganda
(2013)
Tembo, Mavuto Denis
Abstract:
This thesis is carried out against the backdrop of serious concerns that climate change will affect the livelihoods of rural people in Sub-Saharan Africa. I examine the adaptive capacity of people at the micro-scale of action and practice in rural Africa, in particular those in Makondo Parish, in the southwest of Uganda. The focus is on the way adaptive capacity emerges from the interaction of community members, extra-local actors such as non-governmental organizations, and national and local policy-makers. The thesis builds upon literature that explores adaptive capacity at the micro-scale of action and practice in rural Africa. The research, which employs context-sensitive methods, specifically ethnographic and participatory methodologies, contributes to a growing literature on adaptive capacity to climate change in three key ways. First, methodologically, I argue that the application of participatory Geographical Information Systems (PGIS) alongside ethnography can offer a contex...

A Dynamic Spatial Microsimulation Model for Irish Agricultural Emissions
(2014)
Grealis, Eoin
Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a dynamic spatial microsimulation model for Irish agriculture and its use in providing a spatially disaggregated profile of resultant emissions. Following the establishment of a baseline spatial agricultural emissions inventory, a dynamic microsimulation model is developed and is used to simulate agricultural activity forward in time to provide an estimation of future emissions outcomes based on previous historical trends. Finally, in the context of potentially conflicting economic and environmental policies for Irish Agriculture a scenario analysis is undertaken in order to assess the potential emissions impact of achieving the expansionary targets outlined for the dairy sector in the Food Harvest 2020 programme. An adaptation of the SMILE (Simulated Model of the Irish Local Economy) quota sampling procedure involving the incorporation of a novel stocking rate ranking methodology was found to dramatically improve results for the preservation...

A dynamical study of the chirally rotated Schr?dinger functional in lattice QCD

Brida, Mattia Dalla
Abstract:
THESIS 10536
In this work, we present first results from dynamical simulations of the chirally rotated Schr?dinger functional (SF) in lattice QCD. More specifically, we discuss the determination of renormalization constants of quark-bilinears, and show evidence for the expected automatic 0(?) improvement of these determinations. After a short introduction on the topics of non-perturbative renormalization and improvement in lattice field theory, we recall the technical advantages of renormalization schemes based on the SF. We then motivate and discuss the lattice regularization of the SF with chirally rotated boundary conditions, and present details and tests on the simulation algorithm. Finally, we comment on the results and on future possible applications of the method.

A facilities maintenance management process based on degradation prediction using sensed data

Tobin, Ena
Abstract:
Energy efficiency and user comfort have recently become priorities in the Facility Management (FM) sector. This has resulted in the use of innovative building components, such as thermal solar panels, heat pumps, etc., as they have potential to provide better performance, energy savings and increased user comfort. However, as the complexity of components increases, the requirement for maintenance management also increases. The standard routine for building maintenance is inspection which results in repairs or replacement when a fault is found. This routine leads to unnecessary inspections which have a cost with respect to downtime of a component and work hours. This research proposes an alternative routine: performing building maintenance at the point in time when the component is degrading and requires maintenance, thus reducing the frequency of unnecessary inspections. This thesis demonstrates that statistical techniques can be used as part of a maintenance management methodology ...

Abstract:
THESIS 8330
This thesis proposes a feminist reading of the mother-daughter relationship in the writings of Gabrielle Roy and Francine Noel. The texts discussed have been selected due to their feminist nature and to the importance that they accord to the mother- daughter relationship. In the case of Gabrielle Roy, these texts are Bonheur d?occasion. La petite Poule d?eau, Rue Deschambault, La route d?Altamont, La rivi?re sans repos, De quoi t?ennuies-tu Eveline, La d?tresse et l'enchantement and Le temps qui m?a manqu?. Her other texts (noted in the bibliography), while they certainly inform the argument of this thesis, do not constitute part of the main body of this study, due to the fact that they are not considered to focus on the mother-daughter relationship. Gabrielle Roy is also the author of a number of unpublished texts. Again, these do not form part of this thesis, as the material to be gathered from the published texts is already substantial. A fibre based quad-cell wavefront sensor for high speed adaptive optics
(2014)
Mackey, David
Abstract:
The genesis of this thesis came out of the difficulties encountered when trying to apply adaptive optics correction to optical fields that contain scintillation (specklelike amplitude fluctuations). These scintillated fields have non-uniform amplitude distributions and also contain discontinuities in their wavefronts where the amplitude of the field goes to zero. A traditional adaptive optics system that relies on continuous wavefronts and uniform illumination is limited in its ability to correct highly distorted fields. It became clear that adaptive correction using a modular system that does not rely on the continuity of the wavefront or indeed uniformity of the amplitude was better suited to the task. The use of a fibre optics array of sub-apertures to combine regions in close proximity into a mixed signal and to monitor the interference was examined as a more robust means of correcting an aberrated wavefront. Multi-aperture receivers have previously been shown to give an increas...

Abstract:

This research study examines the impact of film induced tourism and destination branding on locations featured in popular films and television series. It also investigates the characteristics of film induced tourism and determines if the key film and tourism stakeholders support the integration of film into Yorkshire’s (UK) tourism product. Yorkshire was selected as the case study area, as it has been the film location for many popular television series and is the subject of much location research within the tourism discipline. The need for a thorough investigation into the film induced tourism phenomenon was particularly evident from the literature review undertaken, as it showed that there was a significant research gap in the successful integration of this phenomenon and destination marketing. In response to this gap, a two phased approach was adopted; the first involved a tourist survey regarding the film induced tourist, while the second phase consisted of strategic co...

A finite element and experimental analysis of energy absorbing systems under static and dynamic loading conditions
(2006)
Morris, Edmund
Abstract:
Knowledge of the behaviour of kinetic energy absorbers or impact attenuating devices is of paramount importance to design and research engineers involved in the automobile, aircraft, spacecraft, and nuclear industries. The main function of these devices is to minimise injury to personnel, to protect cargo that contain hazardous materials or to protect delicate structures from possible impact damage. Such industries require these devices to dissipate kinetic energy into an irreversible form and more importantly, in a controlled and desired manner. The performance of kinetic energy absorbers is significantly affected by various physical parameters such as material properties, mode of deformation and the nature of loading, with strain rate and inertial effects playing an important role due to high velocity impact. This work details the experimental and computational analysis of circular and oblong shaped kinetic energy absorbers subjected to quasi-static and dynamic lateral loading. T...
