A longitudinal study of anxiety, self-esteem and personality of bullying groups
(2003)
Connolly, Irene
Abstract:
THESIS 7856.1
THESIS 7856.2
Bullying can be defined as "repeated aggression, verbal, psychological or physical conducted by an individual or group against others" (Department of Education, 1993. p.6). Once regarded as a childhood issue, the prolonged suffering of victims into adulthood, the quality of their relationships and their ability to operate effectively in the workplace is an area of concern. These children mature into adults with self-esteem issues, anxiety about life in general and feelings of inadequacy. Being the victim of bullying can persist in adulthood, as the coping skills necessary to deal with the problem have not been suitably developed. For the victims it may lead to a life of depression and low self-esteem causing problems in adult relations and accomplishments. The victims may never develop appropriate self-confidence, preventing them from engaging in adult relationships and pursuing careers. It may in extreme cases even lead to them committi...

A machine learning approach to the unsupervised segmentation of mitochondria in subcellular electron microscopy data
(2016)
Dietlmeier, Julia
Abstract:
Recent advances in cellular and subcellular microscopy demonstrated its potential towards unravelling the mechanisms of various diseases at the molecular level. The biggest challenge in both human- and computer-based visual analysis of micrographs is the variety of nanostructures and mitochondrial morphologies. The state-of-the-art is, however, dominated by supervised manual data annotation and early attempts to automate the segmentation process were based on supervised machine learning techniques which require large datasets for training. Given a minimal number of training sequences or none at all, unsupervised machine learning formulations, such as spectral dimensionality reduction, are known to be superior in detecting salient image structures. This thesis presents three major contributions developed around the spectral clustering framework which is proven to capture perceptual organization features. Firstly, we approach the problem of mitochondria localization. We propose a nove...

A machine learning framework for automatic human activity classification from wearable sensors
(2015)
Mitchell, Edmond
Abstract:
Wearable sensors are becoming increasingly common and they permit the capture of physiological data during exercise, recuperation and everyday activities. This work investigated and advanced the current state-of-the-art in machine learning technology for the automatic classification of captured physiological data from wearable sensors. The overall goal of the work presented here is to research and investigate every aspect of the technology and methods involved in this field and to create a framework of technology that can be utilised on low-cost platforms across a wide range of activities. Both rudimentary and advanced techniques were compared, including those that allowed for both real-time processing on an android platform and highly accurate postprocessing on a desktop computer. State-of-the-art feature extraction methods such as Fourier and Wavelet analysis were also researched to ascertain how well they could extract discriminative physiological information. Various classifiers...

A Macro-bend Fiber Based Wavelength Demodulation System for Optical Fiber Sensing Applications
(2008)
Rajan, Ginu
Abstract:
<p>This thesis considers the design and development of a wide range all fiber interrogation system with a rapid measurement capability for extracting reliable measure and information from fiber Bragg grating sensors. Existing passive and active interrogation systems have certain limitations and do not satisfy all requirements. In this thesis a wavelength demodulation system is proposed, based on a macro-bend fiber filter employed in a ratiometric detection scheme. A theoretical model and analysis of an edge filter based ratiometric wavelength measurement (RWM) system is presented. A fiber edge filter is realized by carefully selecting an appropriate bend radius and number of bend turns of a standard single-mode fiber with an applied absorption layer. The calibration and characterization of the system are carried out experimentally and the effect of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the source is studied. It is shown that the SNR limits the measurable wavelength range of the s...

A managerial cognition perspective on the product innovation performance of Irish industry
(1999)
Rooney, Anne-Marie Elizabeth
Abstract:
Little is yet known about the reason(s) for the apparently poor product innovation performance of Irish companies. The findings of a small preliminary study carried out in the context of the present research (prompted by the discovery and re-interpretation of an under-exploited finding of an isolated and under-publicized study conducted a decade ago by O’Sullivan and Tomlin (1985)), suggested the significance of the manner in which the product innovation process is managed - but, perhaps more importantly, that ineffective management of the product innovation process may stem from ‘faulty thinking’ about product innovation and an inadequate understanding of the product realization process. A case was thus made for addressing the product innovation performance of indigenous Irish industry primarily in terms of ‘product realization performance’, for investigating the matter, initially, at least, at an organizational level, for using routine organizational product innovation practice a...

A market consistent gas storage modelling framework: valuation, calibration, & model risk
(2016)
Kiely, Greg
Abstract:
A typical natural gas derivatives book within an energy trading business, bank, or even large utility will generally be exposed to two broad categories of market risk. The first being outright price volatility, where contracts such as caps/floors, options and swing, will have a non-linear exposure to the variability of the gas price level. The second, although equally as prominent, is time-spread volatility where gas storage, take-or-pay contracts, and calendar spread options will be exposed to the realized variability of different time-spreads. Developing a market consistent valuation framework capable of capturing both risk exposures, and thus allowing for risk diversification within a natural gas trading book, is the primary goal of this thesis. To accomplish this, we present a valuation methodology which is capable of pricing the two most actively traded natural gas derivative contracts, namely monthly options and storage, in a consistent manner. The valuation of the former is o...

A market framework for collaborative robot exploration
(2014)
O'Beirne, Declan
Abstract:
This research considers the problem of using miniature low-cost robots for real-world tasks. The issues of low quality sensor data, inaccurate odometry, low processing capacity and limited power are approached through the adoption of a flexible, distributed control system. The system is employed in the context of collaborative multi-robot exploration. A scalable behavior-based control system is presented that is lightweight enough to be deployed on embedded processors while still enabling robots to react effectively to changes in the environment and to other robots. A market framework is used to support efficient task selection for robots as well as the formation of coalitions to achieve close coordination between robots where profitable. Experiments with physical robots demonstrate the viable solutions developed to the many technical issues that low-cost robots raise while further experiments in simulation extrapolate these findings to greater number of robots in more challenging e...

A Mathematical and Numerical Examination of Wave-Current Interaction and Wave-Driven Hydrodynamics
(2011)
Newell, Carl
Abstract:
A new derivation of an elliptic extended mild-slope wave equation, including the effects of energy dissipation and current, has been accomplished. A Galerkin-Eigenfunction method was used for this derivation and the final equation has been used to create a Finite Element Wave-Current Interaction Model (NM-WCIM). The NM-WCIM solves for the complex value of velocity potential, from which all other wave properties can be obtained. An iterative solution scheme based on the gradient of wave phase is implemented to solve for wave-current interaction. A novel post-processing technique for the NM-WCIM has been developed to obtain wave energy rays and hence breaking wave heights and eddy viscosity values. The model has been calibrated and tested against measured data and published results of similar models. The NM-WCIM was used to examine scenarios with complex wave-current interaction and bathymetry, including a case study of Casheen Bay on the west coast of Ireland. The NM-WCIM has proven...

A meta-risk regulation approach to financial and corporate governance failure: lessons from Anglo Irish Bank’s Minsky moment
(2014)
O'Sullivan, Kenneth
Abstract:
This thesis examines the roots of regulation in modern policymaking, with particular attention given to the evolution of financial regulation and corporate governance in Ireland. Through case study evidence of Anglo Irish Bank’s failure, it shows that when banks are systemic in nature, inadequate internal risk controls within a Minsky credit cycle can lead to destabilising macroeconomic conditions, which may prolong the effects of a credit-induced downturn. The thesis proposes the adoption of a supervisory approach based on meta-risk regulation (MRR), which is designed to strengthen the risk management practices of regulators and banks. It also shows that well governed firms operating in weak country-level governance structures receive an ‘investability’ premium. This may provide an incentive for firms in emerging markets, or ones operating in lax regulatory environments, to buffer their internal risk management practices in line with MRR.

A methodology for assessing the load capacity of cantilevered stone stairs
(2012)
Bashorun, Oluwakemi
Abstract:
THESIS 9718
Cantilevered stone stairs were widely constructed from the 17th to the 20th century. Thousands of these stairs were built in Ireland and across Europe during this period and they have proven to be very robust. However, the recent collapse of a flight of cantilevered stone stairs in the Natural History Museum in Dublin shows that they can fail. The majority of cantilevered stone stairs do not cantilever; each tread in a cantilevered stone stairs transfers the load applied to it to the wall support and to the tread below. The predominant resulting force developed within the tread is a torque. Cantilevered stone stairs are highly statically indeterminate which complicates their analysis. In addition, the stone used in their construction is a natural and often highly variable material.

A Methodology Towards Comprehensive Evaluation of Shape Memory Alloy Actuators for Prosthetic Finger Design
(2011)
O'Toole, Kevin
Abstract:
<p>Presently, DC motors are the actuator of choice within intelligent upper limb prostheses. However, the weight and dimensions associated with suitable DC motors are not always compatible with the geometric restrictions of a prosthetic hand; reducing available degrees of freedom and ultimately rendering the prosthesis uncomfortable for the end-user. As a result, the search is on-going to find a more appropriate actuation solution that is lightweight, noiseless, strong and cheap. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators offer the potential to meet these requirements. To date, no viable upper limb prosthesis using SMA actuators has been developed. The primary reasons lie in low force generation as a result of unsuitable actuator designs, and significant difficulties in control owing to the highly nonlinear response of SMAs when subjected to joule heating. This work presents a novel and comprehensive methodology to facilitate evaluation of SMA bundle actuators for prosthetic finger de...

A micro economic investigation of Irish cattle farmer decisions in response to non-linear budget constraints
(2016)
McCormack, Michele
Abstract:
This thesis will examine the effects of policy developments on the Irish beef sector, with a particular focus on agricultural subsidy payments. As a member of the European Union, Irish agriculture is governed by the Common Agricultural Policy. This complex and extensive policy has undergone a number of reforms since it was initially implemented. Irish farmers have benefited both financially and structurally through many different income support and capital support schemes. This thesis is particularly interested in how historical subsidy payments, coupled to production, affected farmer behaviour by influencing the choices farmers made in relation to stocking rates on their farms. Payments that were linked to producing specific agricultural products or keeping specific animal types were highly regulated with upper limits on the number of eligible animals or acres. Where limits were reached, payment levels changed thus creating non-linear budget constraints. These non-linearities provi...

A microcantilever-based, dual-mode, quantitative sensing platform for investigation of biological interactions
(2013)
Jensen, Jason
Abstract:
THESIS 9975
Since the introduction of the atomic force microscope (AFM) and the subsequent availability of high-quality cantilevers the interest in the application of microcantilevers as biosensors has increased year-on-year. Much of the work using these sensors involves working in either the static or the dynamic mode, however there is little work described in the literature involving the use of the two modes in parallel. This thesis describes the development of a dual-mode microcantilever-based sensing platform for applications of quantitative biosensing in a liquid. Due to the large damping of the liquid the application of the dual-mode device for the detection of small biomolecules in low concentration requires the use of a mass label which can increase the sensitivity of the device.

A microscopic study of structural and electronic properties of functionalized silicon surfaces based on first-principles

Arefi, Hadi Hassanian
Abstract:
Surface modification of silicon with organic monolayers tethered to the surface by different linkers is an important process in realizing future (opto-)electronic devices. Understanding the role played by the nature of the linking group and the chain length on the adsorption structures and electronic properties of these assemblies is vital to advance this technology. This Thesis is a study of such properties and contributes in particular to a microscopic understanding of induced changes in the work function of experimentally studied functionalized silicon surfaces. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT), at the first step, we provide predictions for chemical trends in the work function of hydrogenated silicon (111) surfaces modified with various terminations. For nonpolar terminating atomic species such as F, Cl, Br, and I, the change in the work function is directly proportional to the amount of charge transferred from the surface, thus relating to the difference in...

A Miniaturised Spectrometer Device for the Detection of Nitrogen Dioxide in an Urban Environment

Abstract:
<p>Monitoring of air pollutants, such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), that are toxic or environmentally damaging is a key metric for environmental protection agencies worldwide. There is a constant need to develop new technologies and methodologies that provide real-time, low cost pollution measurements over a broad range of sampling sites, particularly in urban and industrial areas. Typically, detection of pollutants in urban environments is performed using a variety of techniques, many of which are expensive, require complex setups and are in fixed locations. The novel system presented in this thesis is designed for portable, low cost and in-situ detection of pollutants such as NO2 using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS). The basis for the system is the new generation of miniature fibre optic spectrometers that provide measurement specifications close to those of more traditional high cost DOAS instruments which are used to cross calibrate the initial data. A model of collaboration-based reputation for social recommender systems

Abstract:
Today's online world is one full of rich interactions between its users. In the early days of the web, activity was almost exclusively solitary, now however, users regularly collaborate with one another, often mediated by a piece of content or service. In offline communities, continued good behaviour and long-term relationship building leads naturally to good reputation, however online users often remain anonymous to their community and so trust building can be difficult to foster among community members. As such there has arisen a need for the system to calculate user reputation itself. Now, online reputation systems provide a variety of benefits to the platforms that employ them such as an incentive mechanism for good behaviour and improving the robustness of the platform. However, these systems are often based on ad-hoc activity metrics, and thus do not generalise to multiple platforms or different tasks. In this thesis we introduce a novel approach to capturing and harnessin...

A model of continuous professional development for registered pre-hospital practitioners in Ireland

Abstract:
The introduction of a Regulatory body in Ireland with responsibility for ensuring high standards of education and professionalism for ambulance, and other pre-hospital, practitioners was a welcomed initiative in 2001 due to a need for improvement in care delivered to patients before arrival at hospital. This Regulatory body, the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), was established under Statutory Instrument with an initial priority being to develop three levels of pre-hospital practitioner: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); Paramedic; Advanced Paramedic (AP). The introduction of these three levels meant that only such registered practitioners could practice in the pre-hospital environment. However for practitioners to renew their registration, they had only to meet simple and minimal criteria with no requirement to demonstrate any level of competence. The Council’s 2011-2014 Strategic plan identified the need to introduce a system of continuous professional development/com...

Abstract:
Pyroglutamyl Peptidase I (PAP1, EC 3 4 19 3) hydrolytically cleaves pyroglutamic acid (pGlu) from the N-terminal of most pGlu-peptides. In higher organisms Thyrothropin Releasing Hormone is a notable biologically active substrate of PAP1. The sequence of bovine PAP1 (Accession No XM 866409) was obtained from GenBank at NCBI (www ncbi nlm mh gov). Using suitable primers cDNA was synthesised using RNA extracted from bovine brain tissue. Following expression of recombinant bovine PAP1 in Escherichia cob, the protein was purified using immobilised nickel affinity chromatography resulting in a yield o f 2 6 mg o f PAP1 per litre culture The Michaehs- Menten constant (KJ fo r the fluorometnc substrate pGlu-7-amino-4-methyl coumarin was determined as 59 fiM and the turnover constant (Kcat) was determined as 3 5 s1. Abstract:
Many organisms are able to survive freezing temperatures through the development of biochemical and physiological adaptations. These biochemical adaptations may include the synthesis of proteins such as antifreeze proteins or cryoprotectants such as trehalose, the elimination of ice nucleators, and the expression of stress associated proteins (such as molecular chaperones, antioxidants, late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins). Physiological adaptations include the ability to undergo cryoprotective dehydration. The molecular mechanisms underlying freezing stress tolerance are poorly understood. One of the main aims of this project was to employ phylogenetic, proteomic, and transcriptomic approaches to gain insights into the adaptations that aid the survival of the free- living cryotolerant nematode Panagrolaimus superbus. Panagrolaimus sp. from temperate, subpolar, polar and continental geographic regions show a range of freezing ability from strains that show high survival upon ...

A molecular dynamics exploration of the properties of bulk and nanosized single-crystal copper

Abstract:
Copper has a history of use that is at least 10,000 years old and it is still one of the most useful metals in today’s world. Nanocrystals of copper are of great scientific interest as they are effectively a bridge between bulk materials and atomic structures. Nanocrystalline copper is used in medical, electronic and coating applications. As Integrated Circuit devices approach nanoscale dimensions copper is the metal of choice for interconnect design. While bulk copper will have constant physical properties regardless of its size, at the nanoscale size-dependent properties are often observed. One purpose of this study was to investigate the properties of reduced-dimension copper crystals and to compare the properties of these small crystals with those of bulk single crystal copper. Metal crystals contain inclusions such as vacancies and voids. These inclusions can change the properties of the crystal. Clusters of vacancies are also thought to result in void formation under certain c...

Abstract:
THESIS 7862
Schizophrenia (OMIM 181500) is a complex genetic disorder, which affects ~1% of the population, and typically presents in early adulthood with abnormalities of perception (psychosis), cognition, information processing and social functioning. Genetic epidemiological research suggests that schizophrenia is related to other psychotic disorders (including schizoaffective disorder and bipolar affective disorder). As a group these functional psychoses are chronic in course, and associated with substantial morbidity. Current treatments are partially effective and were discovered surreptitiously: establishing genes that contribute to these disorders may be important in understanding the biology involved and developing new therapies.

Abstract:
This study endeavours to discuss the Cistercian monasteries of Leinster with regard to their physical location in the landscape, the agricultural contribution of the monks to the broader social and economic world and the interaction between the cloistered monks and the secular world. The various lands granted to the Leinster houses are identified, discussed, and where possible mapped. This theme is the subject of three different chapters. The lands at foundation are examined then the additional grants and privileges included. The seventh chapter investigates the dissolution of the religious houses. The extents of the monastic possessions that were drawn up at this time permitted a detailed examination of the lands held by the Leinster houses. This chapter also provides a template for a study of the physical, economic and agricultural state of the monasteries. The main overall findings of the thesis relate to the uses and makeup of the Cistercian lands in addition to the situation of...
