Youth Policy in Ireland and India: a comparative study

Youth Policy in Ireland and India: a comparative study
(2014)
Motcham, Casimir Raj
Abstract:
Contemporary policy discourse about young people is frequently trapped in the dichotomous paradigm of simplistically portraying them as either ‘a problem’ or a ‘human resource’. This broadly applies both in Europe and in Asia. However, while significant comparative research on youth, youth work and youth policies has been done within Europe, there is very little research which compares the European and Asian contexts, and there is none to date specifically comparing Ireland and India. This thesis explores and compares the youth policies of Ireland and India through the analytical lens of Ian Gough’s (2008) “five I’s”: industrialisation, interests, institutions, ideas and international environment. It examines the major ‘factors and actors’ that have influenced the historical development of youth policies in both countries and situates these in their broader regional contexts. There are many obvious differences between India and Ireland in terms of location, demography, culture(s) an...

Zambian Perspectives: A participatory contextualisation of Youth Civic Engagement (YCE) from both youth and adult Zambian perspectives
(2013)
McArdle, Sheila Ann
Abstract:
In the contemporary adult centered world, global policy has placed young people at the centre of the civic engagement debate. A universal definition of youth civic engagement (YCE) is lacking. The current YCE literature is pre-dominantly northern hemisphere based. A growing consensus moots southern hemisphere knowledge regarding YCE and associated themes are under-represented among existing literature. There is potentially more to gain by engaging in a critically conscious dialogue between northern and southern hemisphere knowledge. Perhaps the most conspicuous absentee from the current YCE debates is the youth voice, especially girl's voices. Historically, in both hemispheres the lives of girls have been overlooked. Against a legislative backdrop that advocates young people have the right to be heard. Adults tend to apply YCE definitions to research which are too narrow and restrictive to fully appreciate youth understandings of their own engagements. The necessity t...

Zazen, philosophy of mind, and the practicality of realising impermanence
(2015)
Power, Kevin J.
Abstract:
This dissertation involves a general overview of the meditative practice of zazen and analytic philosophy of mind while suggesting a potential bridge between them in the form of an analysis of the practicality of realising impermanence. By the end of my argument I hope to have offered up some compelling evidence in favour of the idea that analytic philosophy would benefit greatly from adopting principles which are best learned and expressed through the practice of, and scholarship around, Zen Buddhism and in particular the treatment of the concept of impermanence. I demonstrate the Western philosophical tendency to make dichotomous assumptions about the nature of mind, even when explicitly denying a dualist framework. I do so by examining the historical and philosophical precedent for dualistic thinking in the work of figures such as Plato and Descartes. I expand on this idea by examining the psychology of categorisation - i.e. creating mental categories and boundaries - and demonst...

Zeolite-Y scaffolded donor-acceptor systems for nanoelectronics
(2014)
Sewell , Gavin
Abstract:
Zeolites can act as hosts for supramolecular organization of molecules and complexes. A key objective in supramolecular chemistry is the development of donor acceptor systems capable of controlled photoinduced electron and energy transfer. This thesis focuses on a fundamental study of the capacity of zeolite materials to accommodate dipolar communication between metal complex guest species as well as exploring the effect of zeolite materials on the photophysical properties of guest molecules. Chapter 1 and 2 outline the current state of zeolite host-guest chemistry and the experimental procedures and instrumentation ultilised in this work. Chapter 3 investigates the ability of Y-zeolite to accommodate energy transfer processes between co-doped donors and acceptors. A series of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (where bpy is 2,2’-bipyridine) doped Zeolite Y materials co-doped with iron polypyridyl complexes [Fe(bpy)3]2+ and [Fe(tpy)2]2+ were prepared via the ‘ship in a bottle’ syntesis. The co-encapsulat...

Zwitterionic ion chromatography of common inorganic anions using stationary phases modified with carboxybetaine-type surfactants
(2006)
O'Riordain, Colman
Abstract:
Carboxybetaine-type zwitterionic surfactants were employed to dynamically modify reversed-phase columns (both particle-packed and monolithic in structure), before investigating their use as stationary phases for the determination of common inorganic anions by zwitterionic ion chromatography (ZIC). Both surfactants utilised (namely dodecyldimethylaminoacetic acid and N-dodecyl-N,N- (dimethylammonio)undecanoate (DDMAU)) had a similar structure, with an internal, positively charged ammonium group, and an external, negatively charged carboxylate group, but DDMAU was found to exhibit superior column coating stability, due to its increased hydrophobic character. Both surfactants were found to have a pH dependent effective ion-exchange capacity, with increased eluent pH values resulting in reduced analyte anion retention times, due to increased protonation of the weak acid terminal group of the surfactant molecules. The suitability of these carboxybetaine-modified stationary phases to the ...

Zygomatic implants : a finite element analysis study
(2012)
Freedman, Michael
Abstract:
TX-1-944
Alveolar bone resorption commonly occurs following the loss of teeth in the posterior maxilla. The placement of conventional dental implants is often difficult in this area when resorption has occurred. Zygomatic implants may be placed into the zygomatic bone and can support a dental prosthesis in the severely resorbed edentulous maxilla.

序破急 Jo-Ha-Kyu: enticement - crux - consolidation. From study to learning: Process drama projects in the Japanese English language university classroom

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates how social issues can be explored through process drama projects in the Japanese university English as a Foreign Language classroom context. The trajectory of this dissertation moves along a traditional Noh three part macro-continuum, called Jo-Ha-Kyu, interpreted as enticement, crux and consolidation. Within these three parts, there are six further divisions. Part I consists of three sections: Section I, the introduction, sets the backdrop for the entire dissertation, that of Japan, and aims to draw the reader into its culturally unique and specific world. This section outlines the rationale for placing the ethnographer at the centre of the research, and presents Japan through the eyes of the writer. Section II outlines relevant Japanese cultural norms, mores and values, the English educational landscape of Japan and an overview of theatre in Japan and its possible influences on the Japanese university student today. Section III provides three literat...
