Developing Trust In Virtual Software Development Teams
(2010)
Casey, Valentine
Abstract:
Today globally distributed software development has become the norm for many organizations and the popularity of implementing such an approach continues to increase. In these circumstances a strategy often employed is the use of virtual software development teams. Due to the collaborative nature of software development this has proved a difficult and complex endeavor. Research has identified distance in its various forms as an important factor which negatively impacts on global software development and on virtual software team operation in particular. In this context, the aspects of distance have been defined as temporal, geographical, cultural and linguistic. A key element for the success of any team based project is the development of trust and cooperation. Each aspect of distance can negatively impact on the development of trust and hamper cooperation particularly in the virtual team environment. An additional factor which this research identified is the importance and negative...

Abstract:

The De mixtione elementorum of Thomas Aquinas
(2009)
Loonan, Conleth
Abstract:
In this article Aquinas’s three accounts of how the elements combine – those of Avicenna, Averroës and Aquinas himself – are considered. An attempt is then made to reinterpret these accounts in the light of our contemporary understanding of the manner in which the modern elements behave in combination. This follows Bobik’s lead in restating Aquinas’s own account of how the Aristotelian elements combine, using present-day insights into the behaviour of the modern elements.

?? T cells and NK cells ? Distinct Pathogenic Roles as Innate-Like Immune Cells in CNS Autoimmunity.
(2015)
MILLS, KINGSTON
Abstract:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory, demyelinating disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) resulting in progressive cognitive decline and physical disability. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model of MS that has been used to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying CNS inflammation and autoimmunity. Since the discovery of IL-17-sereting CD4+ T cells (Th17 cells) over 10 years ago, these cells have been the main focus of attention as mediators of pathology in MS and EAE (1, 2). However, in recent years evidence has emerged that lymphocytes with innate-like properties are potent producers of IL-17 and related pro-inflammatory cytokines (3?6). ?? T cells, NKT, and innate lymphoid cells have been shown to be major sources of IL-17 in host control of a variety of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. However, dysregulation of these innate-like lymphocytes can also result in severe pathology in EAE and other mo...

?Apotropaic? Tactics in the Matthean Temptation
(2014)

Abstract:
Among the Dead Sea Scrolls are a number of texts that provide insight into demonological beliefs and practices in Second Temple Judaism. Some passages are concerned principally with providing safety from demonic influence. This anti-demonic orientation is expressed in two fundamental ways: the first is exorcistic and intends to relieve a person of current demonic affliction; the second is apotropaic and seeks protection from future demonic harm. Assessments of exorcistic and apotropaic works have benefited scholars of both early Jewish and early Christian literature. However, the majority of discussions which intersect Qumran studies with demonological traditions in the Synoptic Gospels have typically focused on exorcism. Still, the growing interest in preventative, apotropaic prayer and the illumination of this tradition by the Qumran material is resulting in recent endeavours to broaden the conversation about anti-demonic elements in the gospels. Building on the latest contributio...

?Collaborative production? and the Irish boom: work organisation, partnership and direct involvement in Irish workplaces
(2000)
Roche, William K.; Geary, John F.
Abstract:
A significant strand of recent social-scientific writing on Ireland has assigned great importance to various forms of ?collaborative production?: new forms of work organisation, partnership and direct employee involvement ? even suggesting that their growing diffusion might have played a major role in Ireland?s exceptional economic performance during the 1990s. This paper draws on the University College Dublin national workplace survey of employee relations to present an assessment of the degree to which new modes of collaborative production have gained ground in Ireland during the 1990s. While collaborative production is undoubtedly significant in many Irish workplaces, ?exclusionary? forms of decision-making are shown to dominate the postures of establishments towards the handling of change. Arguments pointing to the ?transformation?, actual or imminent, of work practices and employment relations in Ireland are rejected. Change in Ireland is shown to have much in common with devel...

?Insufficient for the support of a family?: wages on the public works during the Great Irish Famine
(2004)
McGregor, Pat
Abstract:
This paper presents a model of the money wage paid on the public works during the Irish Famine. The administrators are assumed to minimise a cost function that includes the divergence from the target as well as the increase compared to the wage that current information is available on. Estimation reveals a lag of four weeks existed between price changes occurring and adjustment to the money wages. Most seriously, the administrators systematically failed to take full account of the extent of price changes.

?It?s Always the Same, and It?s Always Different? Mythologisation and the Serial Killer in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
(2015)
Smyth, David A.
Abstract:
Serial killers are important in American horror because of their ability to exist between ?myth? and ?reality?. The serial killer is one of the most important American myths, but it is one firmly rooted in real life: unlike Paul Bunyan or Superman, serial killers do exist. This essay examines the relationship between the ?myth? and the ?reality? of serial killers, and the complex relationship between the American public and the serial killer, using Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer as a guide. Firstly, the essay will discuss the creation and importance of American myths, before moving on to examine how the serial killer fits into the American myth mould. It will demonstrate that the serial killer is a mythologised figure in American culture, and that, as a result of this mythologisation, the serial killer as a figure in ?reality? is destabilised and made ?safe?. Following this, the essay assesses John McNaughton?s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer as a reaction against the mytholo...

?Museality as a Matrix of the Production, Reception, and Circulation of Knowledge Concerning Religion
(2011)
GRIESER, ALEXANDRA
Abstract:
Aesthetics of religion focuses on the sensual and representational aspects of religion and develops appropriate terminological tools. The idea of museality as an analytical and heuristic term for culture analysis is specified in the present paper by linking it to the history and dynamics of knowledge. Museums as institutions and cultural practice play a crucial role in the orders and politics of knowledge about religion in Europe. By means of different examples, museality is described as a specific and historically generated cultural pattern of perceiving, imagining, and knowing about religion in modernity. The examples focus on the production of different qualities of knowledge in exhibitions relating to religion, on transitions between religion and science in museums, and on popularisation as a mode of the circulation of knowledge about religion. These reflections on museality and knowledge dynamics could provide new potentials for inter-connective academic research, as well as fo...

?New? and ?old? social risks: life cycle and social class perspectives on social exclusion in Ireland
(2008)
Whelan, Christopher T.; Maitre, Bertrand
Abstract:
The life cycle concept has come to have considerable prominence in Irish social policy debate. However, this has occurred without any systematic effort to link its usage to the broader literature relating to the concept. Nor has there been any detailed consideration of how we should set about operationalising the concept. In this paper we argue the need for ?macro? life cycle perspectives that have been influenced by recent challenges to the welfare state to be combined with ?micro? perspectives focusing on the dynamic and multidimensional nature of social exclusion. We make use of Irish EU-SILC 2005 data in developing a life cycle schema and considering its relationship to a range of indicators of social exclusion. At the European level renewed interest in the life cycle concept is associated with the increasing emphasis on the distinction between ?new? and ?old? social risks and the notion that the former are more ?individualised?. Inequality and poverty rather than being differen...

Abstract:

O'Flanagan, Patrick
Abstract:

'A Burden on the County': Madness, Institutions of Confinement and the Irish Patient in Victorian Lancashire
(2015)
Cox, Catherine; Marland, Hilary
Abstract:
This article explores the responses of the Poor Law authorities, asylum superintendents and Lunacy Commissioners to the huge influx of Irish patients into the Lancashire public asylum system, a system facing intense pressure in terms of numbers and costs, in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In particular, it examines the ways in which patients were passed, bartered and exchanged between two sets of institution—workhouses and asylums. In the mid-nineteenth century removal to asylums was advocated for all cases of mental disorder by asylum medical superintendents and the Lunacy Commissioners; by its end, asylum doctors were resisting the attempts of Poor Law officials to 'dump' increasing numbers of chronic cases into their wards. The article situates the Irish patient at the centre of tussles between those with a stake in lunacy provision as a group recognised as numerous, disruptive and isolated.
