'Not Worth Going to See': The Place of Ireland in Samuel Johnson's Imagination
(2001)
Brunstrom, Conrad
Abstract:
It should be stated at the outset that this is a frankly polemical paper. It may ultimately mean no more than a plea to Irish readers to read Samuel Johnson more sympathetically and more often; bearing in mind that there is a need to treat Johnson's famous "opinions" in their full rhetorical context and to question their relative importance alongside the material that Johnson actually published. It is true that Johnson wrote very little directly about Ireland, but it is important to stress that his broad principles are of interest to anyone studying Ireland in the eighteenth century. Indeed, as the most eloquent anti-imperialist writer writing in English at this time, he has almost automatic claims on an Irish readership.

'Nothing less than its eradication'? Ireland's hunger task force and the production of hunger
(2011)
Fraser, Alistair
Abstract:
A wide range of actors have intervened in the debate about the causes of hunger and what can be done to eradicate it. One example is a 2008 report by the Hunger Task Force, a group of development experts mandated by the Irish government to explain the root causes of hunger and identify ways for Ireland to play a leading role in eradicating it. In this paper, I present a critical review of what the HTF report says about the causes of hunger. I argue the report fails to live up to its aim of commemorating those who died in the Irish Famine in the 1840s because it refuses to consider the role of the corporate food regime in the production of hunger. Further, I position the report’s flaws relative to Ireland by asking how the report balances Ireland’s drive to eradicate hunger against its political and economic interests. I pay particular attention to Ireland’s diplomatic proximity to the United States and to the emerging corporate foodscape within Ireland; both considerations shed ligh...

'Out of Place', 'Knowing One's Place': Space, power and the exclusion of disabled people
(1998)
Kitchin, Rob
Abstract:
Disabled people are marginalised and excluded from 'mainstream' society. In general, our understanding of the processes of exclusion is grounded in time and history. In this paper, it is argued that space, as well as time, is instrumental in reproducing and sustaining disablist practices. Disability has distinct spatialities that work to exclude and oppress disabled people. Spaces are currently organised to keep disabled people 'in their place' and 'written' to convey to disabled people that they are 'out of place' . Furthermore, social relations currently work to spatially isolate and marginalise disabled people and their carers. Disability is spatially, as well as socially, constructed. It is contended that an understanding of society's reaction to, and the experiences of, disability should be framed within an approach that combines a spatialised political economy with social constructivism. Unlike neo-Marxist approaches this approach i...

Abstract:
Abstract Background Ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate of all gynaecologic cancers and is characterised by a lack of early symptoms and frequent late stage diagnosis. There is a paucity of robust molecular markers that are independent of and complementary to clinical parameters such as disease stage and tumour grade. Methods We have developed a user-friendly, web-based system to evaluate the association of genes/miRNAs with outcome in ovarian cancer. The OvMark algorithm combines data from multiple microarray platforms (including probesets targeting miRNAs) and correlates them with clinical parameters (e.g. tumour grade, stage) and outcomes (disease free survival (DFS), overall survival). In total, OvMark combines 14 datasets from 7 different array platforms measuring the expression of ~17,000 genes and 341 miRNAs across 2,129 ovarian cancer samples. Results To demonstrate the utility of the sy...

'Pragmatic randomized controlled trial of individually prescribed exercise versus usual care in a heterogeneous cancer survivor population': a feasibility study PEACH trial: prescribed exercise after chemotherapy.
(2010)
WALSH, JULIE; HUSSEY, JULIETTE; GUINAN, EMER; O'DONNELL, DEARBHAILE
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Many cancer survivors suffer a range of physical and psychological symptoms which may persist for months or years after cessation of treatment. Despite the known benefits of exercise and its potential to address many of the adverse effects of treatment, the role of exercise as well as optimum duration, frequency, and intensity in this population has yet to be fully elucidated. Many cancer rehabilitation programmes presented in the literature are very long and have tight eligibility criteria which make them non-applicable to the majority of cancer survivors. This paper presents the protocol of a novel 8-week intervention which aims to increase fitness, and address other physical symptoms in a heterogeneous cancer survivor population. METHODS/DESIGN: The aim is to recruit 64 cancer survivors 2-6 months after completion of chemotherapy, usually adjuvant, with curative intent. Subjects will be recruited through oncology clinics in a single institution and randomised to usual...

'Protecting the most vulnerable' in an economic crisis: a participatory study of civil society organisations in Ireland
(2012)
Carney, Gemma M.; Dundon, Tony; Nà Léime, Ãine
Abstract:
This paper advances knowledge of how civil society organisations (CSOs) negotiate the shift from boom-time public expenditure to governmental austerity. The study focuses on the Republic of Ireland, where CSOs occupied an important role in providing a voice for 'vulnerable' citizens in corporatism for over a decade. The global financial crisis and subsequent austerity measures caused the country's model of corporatist-style 'social partnership' to collapse. The article connects CSOs' adaptation to austerity measures when protecting the 'people behind the cuts' to broader questions about co-optation of civil society through state-led policymaking institutions.

Laser implosion of 87-bar neon-filled glass microballoon targets produces a dense, cool plasma whose development in time and space is recorded by pulsed-x-ray shadowgraphy with soft x rays from a separate laser-produced plasma. Compressed densities of 4 g cm-3 are estimated from the data by comparison with numerical simulations of the implosion.

'Regeneration from leaf explants and protoplasts of Brassica oleracea var. botrytis (cauliflower)
(2009)
Chikkala, Veera R.N.; Nugent, Gregory D.; Dix, Philip J.; Stevenson, Trevor W.
Abstract:
Adventitious shoot regeneration and protoplast isolation and culture were examined from leaf explants of in vitro shoot cultures of several cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) cultivars, sourced from Europe and Australia, was investigated with the aim to develop improved nuclear and plastid transformation protocols for this vegetable crop. Eight out of 10 cultivars regenerated shoots from at least 79% of leaf explants. Mesophyll protoplasts from leaves gave high yields and division frequencies. Growth of shoot cultures in large glass vessels with vented lids was the key factor in obtaining high protoplast division frequencies of up to 71% and at least 70% of protoplast calluses regenerating shoots.

'Robust Self-Assembled Monolayers of Ru(II) and Os(II) Polypyridines on Gold Surfaces: Exploring New Potentials'
(2009)
MURPHY, FRANCES; DRAPER, SYLVIA
Abstract:
Metal complexes [M(phtpy)(pztpy)](PF6)2 (phtpy = 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, pztpy = 4'-(Npiperazinyl)- 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, M = Ru, Os) were prepared and examined spectroscopically and electrochemically. The piperazine attachment was found to significantly modify the photophysical and electrochemical properties compared to the parent bis-terpyridine complexes, causing a red-shift of the 1MLCT (23 nm) and a substantial cathodic shift of the redox potential (0.30 V for Ru, 0.23 V for Os). Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the complexes on polished gold electrodes were generated simply via the in situ formation of a dithiocarbamate (DTC) anchoring group at the terminal piperazinyl nitrogen on the pztpy ligand. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the monolayers show excellent reversible behaviour and exceptional stability. The high stability of the SAMs is attributed to the strong bidentate attachment to the gold surface of the DTC tether...

'Scorn Eunuch Sports': Class, Gender and the Context of Early Cricket
(2012)
Brunstrom, Conrad; Cassidy, Tanya M.
Abstract:
The under-theorised eighteenth-century game of cricket represents a far more fluid and paradoxical site of enquiry than the exhaustively politicised discussions of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century versions of the sport. Eighteenth-century cricket represents a way of describing the performance of gender within a context of patriotic self-imagining. Poems and paintings describing cricketers of both sexes illustrate how ideas of masculinity and femininity can be celebrated and challenged at the same time. The extent to which cricket (as it is steadily organised and coded) functions as a 'heroic' pastime says much about the centrality of sport in general within the national consciousness.

'Settling back'? A biographical and life-course perspective on Ireland's recent return migration
(2008)
Ní Laoire, Caitríona
Abstract:
This paper uses a biographical and life-course perspective to explore some of the key narratives of return among return migrants to Ireland, focusing in particular on the themes of family, child-rearing, relationship breakdown and ‘settling down’. The ways in which return migrants use the concept of life-course transitions in order to make sense of and narrate their migration stories is explored. I argue that their narratives reflect a normative association of life stage with place, and that return migration reflects the ways in which key events in the individual life course transitions and family life cycles of 1980s emigrants have intersected with processes of economic and social transformation in Ireland. This occurs within the context of heteronormative and kinship-based ideals of Irish culture and of powerful myths of return. The data used in the paper is taken from the Narratives of Migration and Return research project, a north south cross-border project which assembled an or...

Abstract:
Simple synthetic routes are given to the Ag(I) complexes, [Ag2(imH)4](salH)2 (imH = imidazole; salH2 = salicylic acid), [Ag(MeNO2imH)2]ClO4 · nH2O (MeNO2imH = 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole; n = 1, 3), [Ag(NO2im)] (NO2imH = 5-nitroimidazole) and [Ag(apim)]ClO4 (apim = 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole). X-ray crystal structures of [Ag2(imH)4](salH)2, [Ag(MeNO2imH)2]ClO4 · H2O and [Ag(apim)]ClO4 were obtained. The new Ag(I) complexes and related known Ag(I) imidazolates were screened for their growth inhibitory effects (in vitro) against the pathogenic bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli and also the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. [Ag2(imH)4](salH)2, in comparison to the prescription drug silver sulfadiazine, had significantly better anti-bacterial qualities, whilst against the fungus C. albicans it was 47 times more potent than the marketed drug ketoconazole.

<p>The emergence of RNAi offers a potentially exciting new therapeutic paradigm for respiratory diseases. However, effective delivery remains a key requirement for their translation into the clinic and has been a major factor in the limited clinical success seen to date. Inhalation offers tissue-specific targeting of the RNAi to treat respiratory diseases and a diminished risk of off-target effects. In order to deliver RNAi directly to the respiratory tract via inhalation, 'smart' non-viral carriers are required to protect the RNAi during delivery/aerosolization and enhance cell-specific uptake to target ce...

SHEVLIN, MICHAEL; MCGUCKIN, CONOR; DOYLE, ALISON
Abstract:
This paper describes the methodological framework for a large scale longitudinal study examining the experiences of students with disabilities transitioning from 6th year of secondary school to higher education. The study combines inductive and deductive logics of enquiry using 1) college application and admissions data collated from one HEI, and 2) personal viewpoints collated via an online survey and discussion forum. This study was designed as a concurrent-transformative-triangulation-convergent Mixed Methodology with equal weighting and merged results delivered in two sequential phases. Research questions examine access to opportunities, and support and guidance through the transition process from the perspective of students, parents and practitioners within the education system, as stakeholders in the process. The strategic and structural elements of the research process are discussed with reference to the appropriateness of the epistemology, theoretical perspective, metho...

Grogan, Jane
Abstract:
In the Letter to Ralegh accompanying the 1590 Books of The Faerie Queene, Edmund Spenser explains that precisely because his poem is ‘a continued allegory, or darke conceit, I haue thought good aswell for auoyding of gealous opinions and misconstructions, as also for your better light in reading thereof... to discouer vnto you the general intention and meaning, which in the whole course thereof I haue fashioned’. In using these terms, Spenser signals his understanding of allegory as a challenging, esoteric discipline, one for which his readers will need this clarification.

(2015)
Bruen, Jennifer; Sudhershan, Aleksandra
Abstract:
Tandem learning involves learners with complementary target and native languages communicating for the purpose of learning each other’s languages and cultures. Studies indicate that it can function as a powerful complement to formal language learning classes with regard to the development of both language proficiency and cultural intelligence. This paper reports on an intervention designed to create a basis for integration of tandem learning into language modules for undergraduate students of international business. The exercise involved 32 students from higher education institutions in Ireland and Austria who completed letters of application and Curriculum Vitae in their target languages and engaged in peer review with one another. This paper describes this process in more detail, discussing learning outcomes, successes and obstacles, and outlining plans for enhancement.

'Soft and fluffy': Medical students' attitudes towards psychology in medical education
(2015)
Gallagher, Stephen; Wallace, Sarah; Nathan, Yoga; McGrath, Deirdre
Abstract:
Psychology is viewed by medical students in a negative light. In order to understand this phenomenon, we interviewed 19 medical students about their experiences of psychology in medical education. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were generated: attitudes, teaching culture, curriculum factors and future career path; negative attitudes were transmitted by teachers to students and psychology was associated with students opting for a career in general practice. In summary, appreciation of psychology in medical education will only happen if all educators involved in medical education value and respect each other's speciality and expertise.

'Spectacularly Exposed and Vulnerable' How Irish Equality Legislation Subverted the Personal and Professional Security of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Teachers
(2015)
Fahie, Declan
Abstract:
International studies have consistently highlighted the challenges experienced by Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) teachers from around the world as they negotiate their personal and professional identities within the context of an often hostile work environment, In Ireland, the education system remains heavily influenced by denominational mores, particularly those of the Roman Catholic Church. Unsurprisingly, with the declaration by the Roman Catholic Church that homosexuality was 'intrinsically disordered' (Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, 2003), LGB teachers’ professional identity is often (in)formed by fear as well as perceived, or actual, harassment, bullying and overt discrimination. This study represents the first in-depth examination of the apparent contradiction between EU law (Employment Equality Directive - 2000/78/EC) and the derogation afforded organizations with denominational ethos in Irish equality legislation which explicitly permitted discrimination...

'Students enjoyed and talked about the classes in the corridors': pedagogical framework promoting interest in algebra
(2014)
PRENDERGAST, MARK
Abstract:
Research suggests that there are two major reasons for the low numbers taking Higher Level mathematics in Ireland; namely, ineffective teaching and a subsequent lack of student interest in the subject. Traditional styles of teaching make it difficult for students to take an interest in a confusing topic in which they can see no immediate relevance. This is particularly true regarding the topic of algebra and its teaching in school. This paper describes a pedagogical framework designed by the authors for the effective teaching of algebra at lower secondary level in Irish schools that engages students, and promotes interest in the domain. This framework has provided the basis for the design and development of a teaching intervention that has been piloted in Irish schools. In this paper the authors focus on the design of the pedagogical framework and its use to develop classroom materials for a school based intervention.

Abstract:
This article is from Irish Communications Review and is available at http://www.icr.dit.ie
The Sexual abuse of children became a significant public issue in Ireland in the 1990s, with frequent media reports about the issue. In the main these focused on the issue of abuse of children by members of the clergy and religious orders. Headline cases included the abuse perpetrated by Fr Brendan Smyth, a priest of a religious order who was convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of children and subsequently died in prison, and Fr Seán Fortune, a diocesan priest, who committed suicide before his court trial for abuse. While child sexual abuse by clergy was widely exposed in the early 1990s, a subsequent additional scandal was the failure of the institutional Catholic Church to respond adequately to earlier complaints of abuse, and, in particular, to respond adequately to those who experienced abuse. As part of its response to the problem, the Irish Catholic bishops commissioned an ...
