A narrative review of the literature, from occupational therapy journals, regarding restorative occupational choices of individuals who live with schizophrenia.
(2016)
Enright, Aisling
Abstract:
Introduction: Occupational therapy is based on the premise that engagement in meaningful occupation is imperative to a person’s wellbeing, and in order for an occupation to be meaningful it must be chosen autonomously. This research explores how restorative occupational choice is represented in the literature in relation to individuals who live with schizophrenia. Living with schizophrenia may contribute to both internal and external factors which have an impact on an individual’s ability to participate in occupations of their choice and it is important to understand factors which may hinder or support chosen occupations by understanding how individuals spent their time. Method: Twenty-three databases were searched and 1610 studies were then screened. Data from seven studies which met the inclusion criteria were examined and synthesised using thematic analysis. The quality of evidence was assessed across all studies and found to be generally of good quality. Findings: The types of r...

A navigation aid for the visually impaired
(1997)
Kallewaard, Laurens P
Abstract:
The explosion of new technologies in recent times has created many as yet unexplored possibilities in the area of assistive technology. Assistive technology may be thought of as any technology that alleviates the affects of an impairment, disability or handicap. One of the greatest challenges facing designers of assistive technologies is to accurately define the user requirements. The background research chapter of this report attempts to define the user requirements for a navigation aid that can be used any person, regardless of visual ability, both through literature surveys and through dialogue with potential end users. The conclusions drawn from this research are used as a basis for an investigation into possible technological solutions, culminating in a technical summary. Subsequently, the design and implementation of a software package capable of providing environmental information and navigational suggestions is discussed in the final chapters The package is designed to be f...

A New Simplified Federated Single Sign-on System
(2013)
Liang, Chen
Abstract:
<p>The work presented in this MPhil thesis addresses this challenge by developing a new simplified FSSO system that allows end-users to access desktop systems, web-based services/applications and non-web based services/applications using one authentication process. This new system achieves this using two major components: an “Authentication Infrastructure Integration Program (AIIP)" and an “Integration of Desktop Authentication and Web-based Authentication (IDAWA)." The AIIP acquires Kerberos tickets (for end-users who have been authenticated by a Kerberos single sign-on system in one net- work domain) from Kerberos single sign-on systems in different network domains without establishing trust between these Kerberos single sign-on systems. The IDAWA is an extension to the web-based authentication systems (i.e. the web portal), and it authenticates end-users by verifying the end-users' Kerberos tickets. This research also developed new criteria to determine which...

A Novel and Domain-Specific Document Clustering and Topic Aggregation Toolset for a News Organisation
(2015)
McMahon, Claire
Abstract:
<p>Large collections of documents are becoming increasingly common in the news gathering industry. A review of the literature shows there is a growing interest in datadriven journalism and specifically that the journalism profession needs better tools to understand and develop actionable knowledge from large document sets. On a daily basis, journalists are tasked with searching a diverse range of document sets including news gathering services, emails, freedom of information requests, court records, government reports, press releases and many other types of generally unstructured documents. Document clustering techniques can help address problems of understanding the ever expanding quantities of documents available to journalists by finding patterns within documents. These patterns can be used to develop useful and actionable knowledge which can contribute to journalism. News articles in particular are fertile ground for document clustering principles. Term weighting schemes a...

A Novel Assay of Platelet Function reveals Altered Platelet Activity during Healthy Pregnancy.
(2014)
Alobaidly, Maryam
Abstract:
<p>It is well established that markers of platelet activation are elevated during normal pregnancy. For example, levels of platelet-derived thromboxane are persistently elevated in serum and urine of pregnant women, to levels equivalent to those observed in acute cardiovascular disease. In addition, other markers of platelet activation, such as elevated plasma levels of platelet derived P-Selectin and CD40Ligand, are elevated in pregnancy. However, the clinical significance of platelet activation during pregnancy is not understood. Furthermore, systematic studies of platelet function throughout pregnancy are not widely available.</p> <p>In this study I aimed therefore to characterize changes in platelet function in women during normal healthy pregnancy. With our collaborators in the Coombe Women’s and Infants University Hospital in Dublin, 20 healthy pregnant women were recruited at their first-trimester hospital visit (T1; 9-14 weeks gestational age). They donated...

A novel technique for energy saving in freezing technology
(1993)
Zhang, Jianyi
Abstract:
In the freezing process, a single evaporating temperature is normally used in the food industry. This work proposes a new technique which uses two evaporating temperatures in freezing process. Based on the Carnot principle, the bigger the temperature difference of refrigeration, the greater the energy costs. The new technique uses a higher evaporating temperature in the first period of the new freezing process. It allows most of the refrigeration capacity to be obtained for less temperature difference. Then the second period employs a lower evaporating temperature which makes the object further cooled to the final temperature required. In this way, the energy saving can be obtained by proper operations and adjustments to refrigerating plants. The parameters of the novel freezing technique are investigated and optimized using a personal computer. The simulation program is written in Quick Basic. Optimum parameters of the new process are studied for three refrigerants (R22, R502 and ...

A novel therapeutic approach encapsulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor in nanoparticles for treating sensorineural hearing loss.
(2010)
Glynn, Fergal J
Abstract:
<p>There are approximately 688,000 adults in the UK with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. While many people who suffer from hearing loss benefit from the use of a conventional hearing aid, these devices are not effective in patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss. Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) are the target cells of the cochlear implant, a neural prosthesis designed to provide important auditory cues to profoundly deaf patients. The ongoing degeneration of SGNs that occurs following sensorineural hearing loss is therefore considered a limiting factor in cochlear implant efficacy. Exogenous application of neurotrophic factors prevents SGN degeneration and can enhance neurite outgrowth. Both the quantity and the quality of surviving SGNs appear to be important for the success of the cochlear implant. The addition of BDNF to the cochlear fluids can prevent degeneration of SGNs after sensory hair cells are lost in adult rodent cochleae. This neurotrophin ...

A one dimensional hydrodynamic simulation of colliding quasi neutral plasma systems
(2011)
Doohan, Brian
Abstract:
Studies of colliding laser-produced plasmas are of interest in several fields of research, including fusion energy generation, pulsed-laser deposition and potentially as intense short wavelength (X-ray and EUV) light sources. Computer simulations of such systems are a valuable tool in reconciling experimental results with theory and designing new experiments while also providing a platform to explore scenarios which are not easy to realise experimentally. A one-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic simulation of quasineutrality- compliant colliding plasma systems has been developed and is described. The model is based on a multi-fluid theory due to P W Rambo and J Denavit [J. Comput. Phys. 98 (1992) 317] and uses a flux-corrected transport algorithm with an Eulerian grid in order to solve the three Euler equations for hydrodynamic flow. It includes source terms appropriate for high-density, high-temperature plasmas, such as those produced on dense targets at the focus of intense laser be...

A performance model of a telecommunications network structured according to intelligent network principles
(1997)
Newcombe, A. G
Abstract:
The Intelligent Network (IN) is an telecommunications services architecture which enables the rapid creation and deployment of supplementary telecommunications services. However, this flexibility makes the management of the network performance critical in ensuring that customers receive their expected Quality of Service. This thesis describes a model which has been developed to predict the delays in the network due to IN-specific service processing. The model proposed is a queuing network which builds on the existing state of the art as follows. The characteristics of the flows between the IN physical entities are considered and general service time distributions are assumed at each entity. Additionally, the model allows the reservation of capacities as the SCP for each service type. An analytic formulation was developed using the decomposition approximate method. The model was also simulated in order to ascertain its’ accuracy. The results of the analytic solution and the simulat...

A pervasive computing approach to mixed granularity indoor wayfinding
(2014)
Feehely, Daryl
Abstract:
Mystification and discovery are key components in the enjoyment and human experience of wayfinding and fundamental to its success. This thesis extrapolates this theory by applying it to indoor wayfinding, using a mixed granularity wayfinding solution within a pervasive computing context. To exemplify this a smartphone application was deployed with a mixed granularity mapping interface which allows users to view a floor map of a building containing navigation nodes and pathways as well as the coarsely granular location of points of interest with which users can explore the environment. Users may also access finely granular wayfinding information by scanning QR codes placed within the environment to pinpoint their location. The smartphone application was deployed among first year undergraduate students in the University of Limerick over a two year time period. Presented by this thesis is a mixed method quantitative deductive and inductive approach which employs a grounded theory strat...

A Phenomenographic Study of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches to Problem Solving and Conceptualisation of Knowledge.
(2009)
Walsh, Laura
Abstract:
<p>This phenomenographic study presents a description of the approaches to problem solving and conceptualisation of physics knowledge of introductory physics students, specifically in the context of the Irish higher education system. Much research has been carried out that has shown that physics students are not developing the conceptual knowledge necessary to become adept problem-solvers. This may be due to the traditional physics education assumption that students will develop an understanding of the conceptual nature of physics by repetitively solving quantitative problems. However, research has shown that this is not the case and that education and the curriculum needs to explicitly reflect the qualitative and quantitative nature of physics. This empirical study was conducted using phenomenographic assumptions and methodology to collect, analyse and interpret data from forty two individual semistructured interviews with introductory physics students. This study presents a ...

A phenomenological examination of qualified nurses' perception, meaning and experience of culture working in the HSE West
(2011)
Harkin-Kelly, Martina
Abstract:
T his Research Study sets out to examine qualified nurses’ perception, meaning and experience of culture working in the HSE West. The research was conducted utilising a Qualitative Phenomenological Husserlian Framework. An in-depth review of the sociological and nursing literature was carried out. This revealed that culture is a multifaceted, dynamic and nonstatic term which is difficult to define (Tovey & Share, 2003). Nursing is immersed in Culture complete with its philosophies, models and theories which embody the very essence of culture values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour (Bashford & Slevin, 2003). The nurse is a cultural dweller who has been socialised at a personal level and at a professional level. Nursing subscribes to the practice o f Holism yet for many nurses faced with difference in society a tick -the -boxes essentialist perspective is preferred which is at variance to this very constructivist ideal (Gray & Thomas, 2006). A phenomenological study of community gardening : an insider's view of the lived experiences of community gardening participants throughout the growing and non-growing seasons
(2016)
Gaffey, Daniel
Abstract:
This study was carried out with the help of seven research participants at a community garden in the North-west of Ireland. Although research exploring the experiences of community gardening participants is limited, it is broadly acknowledged that community gardens have the capacity to promote positive, physical, social and mental health related outcomes for participants. However, the short Irish growing season and absence of guidelines concerning dormant season engagement limits the potential for these outcomes to be experienced all year round. In response to this I initiated a process of developing a range of new garden features and horticultural craftwork activities at the community garden under study, which would provide stimulation to its members throughout the whole year. The completion of this process paved the way for the execution of a unique study, one which would capture the experiences of participants throughout both the growing and dormant seasons. This study employed a ...

A photoluminescence study of indium implanted silicon
(1993)
Kehoe, Thomas Bernard
Abstract:
The results of a photolummescence (PL) study of indium implanted silicon are presented. When silicon implanted with indium is annealed in the temperature range 400°C to 700°C a sharp no-phonon line at 1096 6 ± 0 1 meV with an associated phonon sideband is produced in the PL spectra Usmg uniaxial stress perturbation techniques the no-phonon line is identified as an A to A transition at a centre with trigonal symmetry. The shift rates for the lme under stress are found to be nonlinear, indicating that some mteraction with a nearby excited state is occurring. Transitions from this state are not directly observed Evidence suggests that the luminescence arises from the recombmation of excitons bound to an electrically neutral indium-implantation damage related centre, and that these exciton states are conduction band associated or donor-like in nature. This centre is shown to be similar to one of three defects observed by Wichert et al [1], usmg the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) sp...

A pioneer occcupational therapist in 50’s and 60’s Ireland: an oral history
(2013)
Ring, Fiona
Abstract:
Background: The history of Occupational Therapy in Ireland has yet to be documented and the literature suggests there were only a handful of trained occupational therapists working in Ireland in the 1950’s. This study is part of a wider project on the History of Occupational Therapy in Ireland, which seeks to address this gap and follow in the steps of other health professions who recognise the importance of documenting their roots. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to capture the experiences of a pioneer occupational therapist who began working in Ireland in the late 1950’s. The aim is to focus on the early years of her training and career to document her contribution to the beginnings of the profession in Ireland. Methods: A qualitative oral history methodology using a case study research design was adopted. The method of data collection was semi-structured interview. Data analysis was completed using thematic analysis. Findings: This oral history captures the challenges and r...

Abstract:
This Thesis is essentially a postmodern analysis of consumerism and shopping which will be divided into three key areas of analysis: * Are consumerism and shopping a gendered or homogeneous phenomenon? *Does consumerism act as the new stimulant/religion of late modernity, in its role as an agent in the reflexive construction of self-identity - is consumption the foundation from which to build an identity and express yourself to others? *Is the commodity the new postmodern God? Is the label/sign the new coloniser of the lifeworld - is it all surface spectacle void of all meaning?

A practical assessment of network orientated load control for the intelligent network
(2003)
Wathan, Navinder Singh
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to assess a new method of controlling load in Intelligent Networks (INs). This will be done through the analysis of experimentation results and comparison with existing methods of IN load control. This exercise will result in the investigation and validation of the proposed benefits being offered by this new methodology and the unveiling of its disadvantages. The methodology is known as network-orientated load control for the IN. Network-orientated load control is demonstrated using the MARINER Service Traffic Load Control System developed by the European Commission’s Advanced Communication, Technologies and Services (ACTS) Multi-Agent Architecture for Distributed Intelligent Network Load Control and Overload Protection (MARINER) Project. This system is shown to be a network-orientated load control application operating at the service level, built specifically for Intelligent Networks. Network-orientated load control is then assessed by deploying the ...

Abstract:
<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Falls are the commonest reason why an older person presents to the Emergency Department (ED) in Ireland and can account for 20-40% of attendances (Aminzadeh and Dalziel 2002). As the population ages it is anticipated that the incidence of falls will increase (Barrett et al, 2011). A quality software process for rapid application development

Abstract:
Having a defined and documented standardised software process, together with the appropriate techniques and tools to measure its effectiveness, offers the potential to software producers to improve the quality of their output. Many firms have yet to define their own software process. Yet without a defined process it is impossible to measure success or focus on how development capability can be enhanced. To date, a number of software process improvement frameworks have been developed and implemented. However, most of these models have been targeted at large-scale producers. Furthermore, they have applied to companies operating using traditional development techniques. Smaller companies and those operating in development areas where speed of delivery is paramount have not, as yet, had process improvement paradigms available for adoption. This study examined the software process in a small company and emerged with the recommendation of the use of the Dynamic Systems Development Method ...

A remote access CT colonography training system

Luauté, Vincent
Abstract:
Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is emerging as an alternative to conventional colonoscopy (CC). However CTC is not yet in widespread use due in part to the lack of suitably trained radiologists. We have developed a novel remote access system to train radiologists for colorectal cancer screening using CTC. To ensure that radiologists can gain the relevant experience without the need for any specialist equipment or software, we opted for designing a system that is accessible via the Internet using a standard browser. The interface lets the user locate and characterise polyps with the help of appropriate tools such as windowing, polyp measurement, zooming and a 3-D view. Each user has an account in order to allow monitoring of their training. They can also run an automatic evaluation of their work based on gold standard information previously gathered from specialists. This thesis also describes an initial implementation exclusively made up of Java Servlets. The evaluation of th...

A review of connection admission control algorithms for ATM networks
(2002)
Curran, Maureen
Abstract:
The emergence of high-speed networks such as those with ATM integrates large numbers of services with a wide range of characteristics. Admission control is a prime instrument for controlling congestion in the network. As part of connection services to an ATM system, the Connection Admission Control (CAC) algorithm decides if another call or connection can be admitted to the Broadband Network. The main task of the CAC is to ensure that the broadband resources will not saturate or overflow within a very small probability. It limits the connections and guarantees Quality of Service for the new connection. The algorithm for connection admission is crucial in determining bandwidth utilisation efficiency. With statistical multiplexing more calls can be allocated on a network link, while still maintaining the Quality of Service specified by the connection with traffic parameters and type of service. A number of algorithms for admission control for Broadband Services with ATM Networks are ...

A review of the development of regional sludge treatment centres and a baseline characterisation of Irish sewage sludges
(2003)
Lehany, Jane C.
Abstract:
This Study assessed the development of sludge treatment and reuse policy since the original 1993 National Sludge Strategy Report (Weston-FTA, 1993). A review of the 48 sludge treatment centres, current wastewater treatment systems and current or planned sludge treatment and reuse systems was carried out Sludges from all Regional Sludge Treatment Centres (areas) were characterised through analysis of selected parameters. There have been many changes to the original policy, as a result of boundary reviews, delays in developing sludge management plans, development in technology and changes in tendering policy, most notably a move to design-build-operate (DBO) projects. As a result, there are now 35 designated Hub Centres. Only 5 of the Hub Centres are producing Class A Biosolids. These are Ringsend, Killamey, Carlow, Navan and Osberstown. Ringsend is the only Hub Centre that is fully operational, treating sludge from surrounding regions by Thermal Drying. Killamey is producing Class A ...

A rule based approach to data certification - applying DQXML for system independent data certification

Hossain, Fakir
Abstract:
Many researchers and practitioners have been attracted to improve data quality due to its monumental importance as a key success factor. Mathematical and statistical models have been deployed to information systems to introduce constrain and transaction based mechanisms to prevent data quality related problems. Entire management of the process and roles involved in data generation has also been scrutinized. Vast amount of knowledge base progressed in this area are mostly limited from practical perspective. Quality related meta data is absent from most information systems. Neither process mapping nor data modelling provides sufficient provision to measure quality or certification of data in the information systems. Furthermore, on-going monitoring of data for quality conformance through a separate process is expensive and time consuming. Recognising this limitation and aiming to provide a practical-orient comprehensive approach, I propose a process centric quality focused solution in...

A rule based approach to real time systems
(1991)
Xie, Peijuan
Abstract:
In this thesis, a progressive refinement approach is proposed for the use of rule-based systems in real time applications. In this approach, the knowledge involved Is constructed in a hierarchy of the levels. Part of this knowledge determines the time available for a decision. Progressive refinement allows the system to take corrective action by forming appropriate solutions within time constraints. An expert system shell written in Prolog is constructed to implement the progressive refinement framework. An English like language is also constructed, which allows the time constrained rules for the system to be specified in a user friendly manner. The framework can be applied to both discrete and continuous systems. An example is provided of the application of the framework to a discrete system. Experiments were also carried out to investigate the application of the framework to a continuous system, and their results are presented here.

Abstract:
Background: The current health service reform highlights the need for multidisciplinary team work and collaborative practice to be central to health care reform. Inter-professional education (IPE) is limited in Ireland and professional accrediting bodies increasingly require evidence that IPE is embedded within pre-qualification health care programmes. Objectives: To explore student perspective of inter-professional education practice placements (IPEPP) and to determine the enablers and barriers to successful team functioning. Methods: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) was used as a methodological framework. 29 databases were searched, 836 articles were reviewed. The inclusion criteria included; articles published in English, peer reviewed journals, empirical studies and studies reporting on the student perspective of IPEPP who experienced full placement blocks. A total of 9 articles were included in this study. Results: The main enablers that facilitate successf...
