A scoping review exploring wheelchair and seating provision for children and its implications for occupational performance.
(2014)
O'Donnell, Joanna
Abstract:
Background: There have been great advances in technology and choice of wheelchair and seating available, yet acquiring these devices has become more challenging. Children need mobility for normal development, and failure to provide an appropriate wheelchair can affect the trajectories of their development. Objectives: To develop an understanding of the vital role that wheelchair provision plays in meeting the basic needs of a child, and to determine the factors of the provision process that impact on their occupational performance. Methods: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) methodological framework: 1) identification of research question; 2) identification of relevant studies; 3) selection of studies to include; 4) charting of data; and 5) collating, summarizing and reporting. Results: From the extensive literature available on the topic of wheelchairs in relation to children, eighteen sources were selected for review. The findings identified four main factors of...

A scoping review of international wheelchair and seating provision, policy guidelines.
(2014)
Kelly, Maria
Abstract:
Background: For people who use wheelchairs being supplied with an appropriate wheelchair that is well fitted and well designed to maximise occupational performance and participation is a basic human right. Wheelchair provision has a huge bearing on a person’s quality of life, health and well being. Every aspect of wheelchair provision is paramount from referral to follow up, maintenance and repair. Objective: At present in Ireland there is no national policy, standards or guidelines in place for the provision of wheelchairs, making the focus of this study a high priority. The researcher is going to explore international literature on wheelchair and seating provision policy and guidelines. Method: Wheelchair provision policy guidelines were identified using databases: AMED, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, PhycINFO and Google Scholar. The search engine “Google” was used to search grey literature. The data was interpreted through a content analysis. Findings: Policy, guidelines and stand...

A scoping review of the delivery of education and training for occupational therapists internationally
(2014)
McNally, Lorna
Abstract:
Background: Occupational therapists play a key role in the provision of wheelchairs and seating. Wheelchair and seating educational training is not mandated in occupational therapy programmes in the Republic of Ireland which is a major concern for wheelchair users who may have received inadequate provision from clinicians with insufficient training. Objective: To investigate the training and education afforded to practicing clinicians in developed countries and to prioritise building sustainable wheelchair and seating education systems for future practicing clinicians on an international level. Method: A qualitative scoping review of scientific and grey literature was undertaken internationally of 10 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Results: A review of the scientific literature revealed that no universal education and training mandates have been established internationally to ensure effective provision of wheelchair and seating. Grey literatu...

A secure searcher for end-to-end encrypted email communication
(2015)
Mani, Balamaruthu
Abstract:
Email has become a common mode of communication for confidential personal as well as business needs. There are different approaches to authenticate the sender of an email message at the receiver‟s client and ensure that the message can be read only by the intended recipient. A typical approach is to use an email encryption standard to encrypt the message on the sender‟s client and decrypt it on the receiver‟s client for secure communication. A major drawback of this approach is that only the encrypted email messages are stored in the mail servers and the default search does not work on encrypted data. This project details an approach that could be adopted for securely searching email messages protected using end-to-end encrypted email communication. This project proposes an overall design for securely searching encrypted email messages and provides an implementation in Java based on a cryptographically secure Bloom filter technique to create a secure index. The implemented library i...

A simulation approach to modelling quality and reliability features of plant processes
(1999)
Karagiannis, Theofanis I
Abstract:
The relationship between component and system reliability is a key factor in the improvement of plant processes and a wide variety of models have been studied, under the general headings of “Probabilistic Methods”, “Graph Theoretical Methods” and “Simulation”. An outline review of these reliability models is given as a background to the work of the thesis and the ideas were used to steer the design of the software tool, which we have developed. The tool is generic in the sense that it can be used for any production system consisting of any number of parallel production lines, although we have considered its application in detail for one system only. In particular, we describe an application of reliability theory in the modelling of a plant process, which incorporates examples of Load-Sharing, parallel and series stages and we demonstrate how the production plannmg control is related to reliability considerations. The tool has been tested in reference to a real production system, fo...

A sociological analysis o f the recent rise in assaults on young men in Irish society.
(2001)
Cronin, Kieran
Abstract:
When I set about researching for my thesis and began looking for articles and books on assaults on young men in Ireland, I discovered it was a subject, which had been largely ignored by both Sociologists and Criminologists. In contrast to the wide scale research on Youth Drug Culture or Youth Delinquency, there are very few studies about the nature and extent of assaults on young men in Ireland. Faced with this problem I set about researching articles and pieces written on Assault, by Journalists such as Kim Bielenberg and Fintan O’Toole. It was from this research that I discovered much of my theory and it prompted me to research other journals and sociological studies on the diverse factors, which have led to an increase in assaults in recent years. The literature I researched on assaults comes from an array of sources and I have discussed them under a number of headings. These headings, include 1) Crime in Irish Society; 2) Assaults; 3) Alcohol consumption among young p...

A spatial analysis of the suppliers of nature based tourism in Ireland, insights into the provision of walking tourism on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, Co. Cork.
(2014)
Abstract:
The tourism industry from 2012 to 2022 is expected to grow by an average of 4% annually to constitute 10% of global GDP (US$10 trillion). It is also predicted by 2022, globally, one in every ten jobs (328 million) will be tourism-related. With the unprecedented growth of tourism it is essential that sustainable planning guidelines are adhered to. Sustainable management of our natural resources is now a high priority, as tourism planners attempt to avoid past problems associated with the mass tourism market as happened in the case of the rapid growth of the Costas around the Mediterranean Sea from the 1960s until the 1990s. This type of mass or ‘fast tourism’ represents the very antithesis of a type of tourism that is considered sustainable. The dominant approaches to tourism development heretofore illustrated little or no concern for the existing landscape, social, environmental or economic and it is hoped that the dawn of ‘slow tourism’ and more ecological approaches that are based...

McCarthy, Pauline
Abstract:
In this thesis we discuss the evidence for scatter in g at right angles o two vortices in a head-on collision. The evidence is given in terms of the approximate solutions of the equations of motion or the Euler-Lagrange equations DiD^+^Wm2- 1) = 0, d,Fij + i/2(o*Djo - <f>(DJ<f>y) = 0 where D{ = (<9, — iA{) and F{j = d{Aj — djAi and (At(x),<ft(x)) describe the gauge potentials and Higgs fields respectively. The case A = 1 describes the case where there are no net forces on the vortices but we also extend the analysis to th e case o f a sm a ll net repulsive force between the corresponding static vortex configurations where A > 1. The ordinary differential equations, which result from th e ansatz for th e approximate solutions, are solved by Taylor series a t the origin and a sym p to tic series at infinity.

A spectral voltammetric and chromatographic investigation of the complexation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride to metals of varying valency
(1985)
Buckley, Daniel Leo
Abstract:
The research work presented here is concerned with how a systematic study of the acid - base equilibria, polarographic and chromatographic behaviour of an antibiotic and its corresponding metal complexes can aid in the development of a sensitive analytical method to speciate these compounds. The antibiotic studied here was one of the most used of all broad spectrum antibiotics namely oxytetracyclme hydrochloride. A systematic study of the acid - base equilibria yielded four pK^ values pK^ = 3 3, pK^ = 7.5, pK^ = 9.7 and pK^ = 10.4. A systematic study in different buffers also using ultraviolet spectroscopy yielded information which was important in determining at which sites the metals studied were binding to the antibiotic. The Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Mg(II) ions binding in a similar fashion to the BCD chromophore of the antibiotic and the Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions binding in a different manner to the A chromophore of the antibiotic. The polarographic study yielded information ...

A structural alignment model of noun-noun compound interpretation
(2003)
Hayes, Jer
Abstract:
The interpretation of noun-noun compounds is complex, yet compounds such as 'web surfer' and 'beef baron' are generated and interpreted easily by native English speakers. Concept combination is the core process in the generation and interpretation o f noun-noun compounds. Such compounds may be read literally or metaphorically suggesting that the combination process is capable of both literal and metaphoric interpretations. The motivation for this thesis is to tackle three problems which occur in concept combination. These problems are: (1) compounds are often polysemous, (2) compounds often appear to be understood by evoking a context (or world knowledge) and (3) compounds can be interpreted figuratively. We suggest that adopting structural alignment allows us to deal with each of these problems. Structural alignment is a process whereby conceptual structures are placed into correspondence and similarities are found. The structural alignment model proposed in t...

A study examining the impact a disclosure of depression has on workplace relationships
(2013)
O'Connor, Michelle
Abstract:
Background: The decision to self-disclose a concealable illness such as depression is one which requires much consideration. While there are many benefits to disclosure including relieving stress, receiving supports, and an opportunity to dispel stereotypes, there is also the fear that disclosure may lead to discrimination especially within the workplace. Objectives: This small study aims to examine the experiences of people who disclose their diagnosis of depression within the workplace, and more specifically the impact self-disclosure has on their relationships with co-workers and managers. Methods: As part of this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were carried out with four individuals between 25-45 years with a diagnosis of depression. Thematic analysis guided by critical disability theory was used in the data analysis. Findings: Overall the findings correspond with the majority of the literature relating to mental illness and the workplace. Participants acknowledged...

A Study into Developing Strategies for Internationally Competitive Irish-owned Consumer Brands
(2006)
O'Curry, Aidan
Abstract:
<p>The objectives of this study centre on researching the complexities inherent within the development of Irish owned consumer brands. This is with particular emphasis on the international development of Irish brands and the ways by which International success can be realized. There has been a notable lack of Irish successes in International markets since that achieved by brands such as Guiness, Bailey’s, and Kerrygold. Through examinination of the literature on branding and contextualization of the study considering the Irish business environment, the research aims to explore ways in which indigenous Irish brands can grow and achieve international success. The first two chapters review the literature on branding. Chapter one looks at the literature concerning the concept of a brand. Furthermore, the chapter also discusses the strategic aspect of brand management. Chapter two looks at bran management in an international sense and the Global brand concept. The Literature review...

A study of atypical employment in the service sector in Ireland
(1995)
McGreevy, Sharon Mann
Abstract:
The primary research has been based on the Irish services sector with specific reference to the hotel, tourism and hospital sectors. Comparisons will be drawn with the UK and where appropriate other European Countries. There are four main aims of the research: firstly, to establish a profile of atypical employees: secondly, to establish the terms and conditions of such employees; thirdly, to consider management perspectives which address issues relevant to peripheral employees; and finally, to consider the future outlook for atypical employment in the Irish Service Sector. Within the British literature one of the best basis for discussion is the concept of the "Flexible firm" proposed by Atkinson (1987), who argued that new firms are segmenting their workforces into a core and a periphery. Core employees have standard working conditions, secure employment, promotion etc. Conversely, with peripheral employees, firms focus on using a cheaper supply of labour by using employe...

A study of centralised bargaining in Ireland 1922-1997: the evolution of corporatism
(1998)
Keogh, Andrew
Abstract:
This paper demonstrates that the centralised collective agreements negotiated in Ireland over the past ten years are, in fact, corporatist arrangements. This is done by reference to the agreements themselves and the literature available on corporatism as a theoretical model. By studying the history and development of centralised bargaining in Ireland, it was established in the course of this dissertation that these agreements represent the latest step in an evolutionary process which has taken place in centralised bargaining since the end of the Second World War. This evolution has been gradual, with each new agreement reached at the national level bringing something more to the process. What began as a basic framework agreement in 1948 has slowly led to the adoption of corporatism in Ireland as it became the next logical step in national-level bargaining. The issues currently facing the social partners in the operation of the current agreement and in the negotiations for any futu...

A study of cultural agency and an analysis of its application
(2014)
Garry, Shauna
Abstract:
This study is concerned with analysing the application of cultural agency in two distinct cases. The case in Bogotá, Colombia, examines the promotion of civic awareness through the use of mime artists and how this led the city to embark on a major cultural experiment, under the instruction of the city mayor, Antanas Mockus. The case in Dublin, Ireland, examines RTE‟s documentary John Lonergan‟s Circus to highlight the value Art has, through the use of circus training, as an educational tool for students from socially disadvantaged areas in Dublin. The pedagogical theories of Paulo Freire and the literature written by Doris Sommer, based on cultural agency, inform the research. This research contributes to the literature by examining the value aesthetics and the Arts can have both socially and pedagogically, when used in innovative ways. This research follows a qualitative methodology; case study is referred to throughout, while interviewing allowed for analysis of data. The applic...

A Study of French Suburban Discourse from Sociolinguistic and Literary Perspectives.
(2013)
Abstract:
This work seeks to investigate French suburban discourse from both sociolinguistic and literary perspectives. As part of a wider negative discourse pertaining to the banlieue, these areas have come under criticism from some parts of the media, as well as a number of scholars, for being sites of perceived linguistic impoverishment where the French language is being corrupted. This work aims to challenge these perceptions of the linguistic capital of les cités. This will be achieved through the in-depth study of two salient elements of French suburban discourse: verlan and Beur literature. Firstly, it will be shown that verlan is a positive lexical product of the banlieue as it is acts as a unifying linguistic code for the Beur community. It has positive implications for this demographic as it aids in the affirmation of a unique Beur identity. Secondly, a selected corpus of Beur literature will be studied, in order to reveal the literary capital of the banlieue. It will be advanced th...

Abstract:
Dundalk Institute of Technology maintains a strategy of strongly encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial activities amongst its students across all faculties and disciplines. This research has made evident that efforts have been made to develop an enterprise culture on campus. An array of detail is given on a range of examples of this level of support which includes the on-campus Regional Development Centre, the ACE initiative based on campus and also the effort in spearheading the student enterprise intern programme which has now been extended to a number of institutes throughout the country. There is a general agreement amongst both authors of relevant literature and also industry experts that intrapreneurs and innovations play a key role in the success of any organisation of either large or small profile. It is also stated that the organisational culture in which individuals are employed will have significant impact in their ability to generate an innovative performance. It is...

Abstract:
<p>In the last four decades the container as an essential part of a unit load-concept has achieved authentic importance in international sea freight transportation. With ever increasing containerization the number of port container terminals and competition among them has become quite remarkable. Port container operations are nowadays unthinkable without effective and efficient use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) (Steenken & Stahlbock, 2004). The main problem in handling increasing levels of cargo is managing the internal traffic and optimizing space inside smaller and medium sized ports. A gap exists between automated cargo handling equipment that is suitable for use in the larger container terminals such as Rotterdam and its suitability in smaller terminals such as Dublin. A new generation of cargo handling technology has been designed in the form of an Intelligent Autonomous Vehicle (IAV). The IAV is a clean, safe, intelligent vehicle which will contribute to imp...

Abstract:
Based on the selective toxicity of yeast killer toxins towards other yeasts, a search was mounted for pharmacologically active proteins effective against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. the principal aetiologlcal agents of vaginal candidosis. Of the twenty killer yeasts screened, only Williopsls mrakii LKB169 and NCYC500 displayed strong anti-Candida activity and were selected for further study. Unfortunately both yeasts proved unstable following serial subculture on agar slants. A secretion mutant derived from LKB169 (denoted LKB169A) lacked antimicrobial activity against both _C albicans and Saccharomyces cerevislae but retained activity against £ glabrata. A working hypothesis proposing the existence of multiple toxins from W mrakii was further investigated. A triplet bioassay using _C albicans A72, _C glabrata NCYC388 and cerevislae NCYC1006 was developed to differentiate toxins from W mrakii. Based on differences in thermal decay, sensitivity to papain and specificity o...

Abstract:
The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) is part of a range of curriculum reform at Senior Cycle. This dissertation explores the issues arising from the introduction and implementation of the LCVP into a selected number of schools with a particular focus on Saint Anne’s, the target school. In order to get a clear picture of the situation in these schools, a semi-structured interview was held with the Co-ordinator of each programme. This instrument was chosen as the most productive research approach since each co-ordinator, in theory, would be familiar with all aspects of the programme. In addition one of the Development Officers on the LCVP Support Team was interviewed in depth. The purpose of this interview was to gain an insight on implementation from a national perspective. Finally it was considered valuable to get the perspective of students as well as teachers. These consisted of two distinct groups, firstly Fifth Year students in the target school who had opted for ...

A study of the distribution of selected anthropogenic micropollutants in the seawater of Dublin bay
(2007)
Roden, Francis J.
Abstract:
Since the middle of the last century there has been a growing awareness of the existence of widespread environmental pollution and of the potentially harmful effects that polluting species can have on biological systems. Initially the concern focused on the ubiquity and on the harmful effects of organochlorine compounds, in particular organochlorine pesticides. In the 1970s the malign effect that xeno-estrogenic material could have on biological systems became apparent and the increasing incidence of such polluting material, frequently derived from sewage or other wastewater effluent, in the aquatic environment provoked concern. A more recent topic for research has been the occurrence in the aquatic environment of the residues of pharmaceuticals originally developed and prescribed for the treatment of human or animal illnesses or physiological complaints. Though ample evidence has been recorded for the prevalence of such residues no definite conclusions have been reached regardin...

Abstract:
<p>To promote industry sustainability and to catalyze links between publicly-funded knowledge providers and companies, the Irish government has invested significantly in food-orientated research and development. This project aims to facilitate a greater understanding of the motivations and barriers influencing the decision by small and medium-sized food enterprises (SME) to invest in technological innovation, emanating from research conducted in publicly-funded organisations. A critical review of the literature was used to develop a framework for investigating the uptake of technological innovations from sources external to the company. In order to ground this framework within the specific context of the Irish food industry, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with key food industry representatives (n=7). Building from the literature and exploratory interviews, a postal survey of Irish food SMEs was undertaken (n=399). A response rate of 31.8% (n=117) was achieved. ...

(2010)
MacLaughlin, Patricia
Abstract:
Ireland, in the last decade has witnessed an increased demand for child care services. The government has responded by addressing the quality o f childcare services and the educational needs of the childcare workers. They have approached these issues by implementing a quality framework called Siolta and the new early childhood curriculum framework Aistear. Nevertheless, to date, these frameworks are not mandatory. Therefore each pre-school setting has its own limitations due to childcare workers’ experience and facilities, and these consequently influence and affect a child’s experience during art. Similarly, the theoretical framework and methodology of each pre-school will affect the way in which art is facilitated and creativity is fostered. The object o f this research was to study the pre-schools art systems’ impact on children’s creative development and associated learning, by analysing the provision of art in the Mainstream, Steiner Waldorf, Montessori and HighScope pre-school...

A Study of the Impact of the Child Care (Pre-school Services) Regulations (1996) on the Quality of Early Childhood Services in Ireland: the IEA Preprimay Project Revisited
(2004)
O'Kane, Mary
Abstract:
<p>In 1996, the first legislative control over early education services in Ireland came into place in the form of the Child Care (Pre-School Services) Regulations. The research hypothesis of this study was that the implementation of the Regulations had an impact on quality of early childhood care and education (ECCE) services in Ireland. It was also acknowledged at the outset that other related factors, such as increased level of investment and improved levels of training, may have affected quality of provision. Baseline data, gathered in 1994 and 1995 as part of the cross-national IEA Preprimary Project in which Ireland took part, was used to investigate the changes in quality. This allowed comparison of both structural and process elements in ECCE provision before the implementation of the Regulations, and six years after their implementation in 2002. The methodology of the present study involved revisiting a sub-sample of the original IEA Preprimary Project national sample,...

Abstract:
In this work six engineering and physical science laboratory experiments were developed to enhance the learning experience for students. This was achieved by instrumenting and creating virtual instruments for these experiments. The use of virtual instrumentation is directly compared with traditional laboratory teaching techniques and pedagogical principles from which both methods have developed from are discussed. Previous work utilising Computer Based Learning (CBL) in similar projects relating to this work have been used to evaluate some of the benefits of virtual instrumentation, especially those relating to increased student interest, memory retention, understanding and ultimately performance in laboratory reports. The virtual experiments discussed in this study are redesigned versions of traditional style experiments and hence a direct comparison of newer CBL techniques to traditional style laboratories was undertaken. There was no change in concepts being between the two versi...
