A study of the influences on the development of alcholism and problem drinking
(1986)
McDonnell, Gerard
Abstract:
Alcoholism is a world-wide problem which effects a large section of the Irish population. It is estimated that as much six per cent of all drinkers in Ireland drink more than the safe limits. This study provides a review of the literature dealing with the influences on the development of alcoholism to date and it reports on the results of an empirical study carried out on the causes of alcoholism in an Irish sample. An alcoholic group and a control group, each consisting of twenty eight people, was interviewed using a standardized questionnaire. A qualitative approach was adopted which best suited the exploratory nature of the study. Data rich in detail on personality, family background, and social environment was gathered. Responses were categorized and tabulated for each question, and the differences between the two groups were tested for significance. The results of the study indicate that the four models of alcoholism tested, ( medical, psychoanalytic, behavioural, sociologica...

A study of the interaction between national and corporate culture in a selection of Irish based companies
(2004)
Larkin, Kerry
Abstract:
This research studies the phenomenon of national and corporate culture. National culture is the culture the members of a country share and corporate culture is a subculture which members of an organisation share (Schein, 1992). The objective of this research is to reveal if the employees within equivalent Irish and American companies share the same corporate and national culture and to ascertain if, within each company, there is a link between national culture and corporate culture. The object of this study is achieved by replicating research which was conducted by Shing (1997) in Taiwan. Hypotheses and analytical tools developed by Shing are employed in the current study to allow comparison of results between Shing’s study and the current study. The methodology used, called for the measurement and comparison of national and corporate culture in two equivalent companies within the same industry. The two companies involved in this study are both located in Ireland and are of American...

A study of the separation of storage proteins for varietal identification and b-glucan and b-glucanase levels in malting barley
(1995)
Fitzpatrick, Carina
Abstract:
High performance liquid chromatography, using either reverse phase, anion exchange or chromatofocus mg columns was used for the resolution of hordems extracted from Irish barley varieties. The possibility of using the hordein elution profiles for the routine identification of Irish barley varieties was investigated. Extracted hordems were well resolved with the two reverse phase columns used in the present work and the difference between the elution profiles of the thirteen varieties examined were very obvious. It was possible to reduce hordein elution times for the reported 110 minutes to about 50 minutes without loss in resolution by using a C4 rather than C18 column. As the hordein profiles were repeatable even after extended column use, they can be used for the positive identification of Irish barley varieties. Hordein elution profiles characteristics of a particular variety were also obtained with anion exchange column and chromatofocusing, but the resolution with both was mu...

A study of the spatial characteristics of a laser plasma extreme UV continuum source for absorption spectroscopy
(1998)
Moloney, Christopher Joseph
Abstract:
The spatial characteristics o f a laser plasma Extreme UV continuum source used in absorption spectroscopy was examined. The spectroscopic system consists of a toroidal mirror in series with a 2.2m grazing incidence spectrometer resulting in a quasi-stigmatic imaging system. The experimental knife-edge response of the system was recorded in both the vertical and horizontal directions for energies of 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150eV. Estimates of the spatial resolution of th e system were obtained from the various experimental knife-edge responses of the system using the 25-75% and 10-90% criteria. Using the ray tracing software SHADOW, the system was ray traced for each of the five energies above. The experimental knife-edge experiments in both the vertical and horizontal directions were then simulated in a series of virtual knife-edge experiments. The source size defined in SHADOW was varied until optimal correlation was achieved between the virtual and experimental knife-edge response...

A Study of The United Irish League in The King's County, 1899-1918
(1992)
McEvoy, John Noel
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the growth, development, fortunes, and subsequent decline of the United Irish League (UIL) in the King's county between 1899 and 1918. This organisation carried out many tasks for the Home Rule or Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), such as collecting party funds, registering voters, organising demonstrations, canvassing voters during elections, and solving disputes between Nationalists. Historians have tended to examine the defeat of the IPP in the General Election of 1918 in the light of events that unfolded after 1914 (and more particularly after the Easter Rising), but this thesis shows that the party's structures at local level (ie the UIL organisation) was in a chaotic state as early as 1912; and consequently, the rise of Sinn Fein after 1916 took place in a background of much less opposition than might have been anticipated. The first two chapters in the thesis examine the early growth and development of the movement in the county, which was n...

A study of the XUV flux emission from laser-plasmas using a multilayer monochromator
(1994)
Collins, M. J
Abstract:
When the output of a high-power laser is focussed onto the surface of a solid target, a localised and short-lived plasma is formed which is charactensed by high electron densities and temperatures As a result, such plasmas radiate predominantly in the extreme UV and x-ray spectral regions Results from a study on the dependence of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) emission from plasmas created with a conventional Nd YAG laser (500 mJ, 10 ns) on target elements from carbon through lead are presented. A complete descnption of the XUV flux measurement system is given. For a number of elements, spectral measurements in the energy region of interest were recorded using a 2 2 m grazing incidence multichannel photoelectnc spectrometer. These spectra are used to generate a complementary atomic-number dependence which is compared with that yielded from the flux measurement system. The XUV emission spectra from plasmas of cobalt through zinc are measured. The corresponding predominant ion stages and ...

A Study on the Use of Ontologies to Represent Collective Knowledge
(2008)
McAuley, John
Abstract:
<p>The development of ontologies has become an area of considerable research interest over the past number of years. Domain ontologies are often developed to represent a shared understanding that in turn indicates cooperative effort by a user community. However, the structure and form that an ontology takes is predicated both on the approach of the developer and the cooperation of the user community. A shift has taken place in recent years from the use of highly specialised and expressive ontologies to simpler knowledge models, progressively developed by community contribution. It is within this context that this thesis investigates the use of ontologies as a means to representing collective knowledge. It investigates the impact of the community on the approach to and outcome of knowledge representation and compares the use of simple terminological ontologies with highly structured expressive ontologies in community-based narrative environments.</p>

A sustainable regional economic growth strategy for Ireland's Mid West : targets and policies
(2011)
Buckley, Melissa
Abstract:
The Mid West is considerably underdeveloped relative to other Irish regions and international economies, largely due to the region’s low value added service sector and a leakage of highly skilled labour, including graduates and female labour, from the region. The objective of this research is to establish the factors that drive regional economic growth in terms of pursuing a long term growth model for the Mid West and determining the key government policies required in order to stimulate this. The theoretical and empirical findings of this research show that a confluence of various factors drives regional economic growth, including physical and human capital, an exporting service sector, labour supply, trade, innovation, technological progress, clusters of economic activity and entrepreneurship. This research investigates key economic performance data for the Mid West Region. Policy prescriptions for the Mid West, based on ex-ante literature and case studies of best practice, are pr...

A System Design Framework for Project Cost Control in the Irish Construction Industry
(2001)
Kelly, Tomás
Abstract:
<p>The construction industry is a major contributor to the Irish economy. The common denominator of the of the industry’s business is the “construction project”. Construction projects by their very nature are unique being influenced by many variables such as weather, location, design and personnel. This situation demands strong management to fulfil the cost control function. The primary aim of this project has been the illustration of a system design framework for project cost control in the Irish construction industry. This system design should be based upon a general principle identified for the design of an overall project management system. Whilst cost control is the primary focus, it is not the exclusive concern of the proposed system as this would be ignoring the very source of the industry’s problems namely, the complex interrelationships of its various components, aesthetics, structural, financial and environmental. Two main research techniques were adopted in this stu...

A systematic review & meta-analysis of randomised controlled cognitive-based interventions for dementia – restorative, compensatory, & mixed approaches
(2016)
Molloy, Mary Majella
Abstract:
Background: Cognitive impairments are a central feature of dementia and have a significant impact on those with the disease and their caregivers. Cognitive-based interventions for dementia, (e.g., stimulation, training, and rehabilitation), are often used to ameliorate the symptoms of cognitive impairments. These interventions are based on processes that restore or compensate for the impairments found in dementia. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to examine the existing research and establish the most effective approach for improving cognitive and functional outcomes for persons with dementia (PwD). Objectives: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of restorative and compensatory interventions to improve cognitive and functional outcomes for PwD. Search Methods: PsycInfo, PubMed, SCOPUS, and CENTRAL were searched between 01.01.2000 and 31.12.2015 in January 2016. A technique for implementing complex boundary configurations in industrial plasma modelling and simulation
(2010)
Abu Shamaleh, Taghreed
Abstract:
The use of plasma as an industrial tool has become the norm within the surface treatment industry. However, our understanding of the plasma surface interactions is still within the R&D phase. What can be done experimentally is limited due to the electromagnetic properties of plasma and the intrusive nature of the methods available for experimentalists. Incorporating complex boundaries (reactor walls/treated surfaces/external circuitry) in computerized simulation is a sought after goal in the battle of understanding industrial plasma peculiarities . A flexible-easily configurable- modus operandi has been devised to implement the effects of complex boundaries within the vicinity of an electromagnetically active system. The technique is based on the spatial conversion of the system into dynamic electromagnetically time-variable elements, then using circuit/Maxwellian approach to obtain and analyze time snapshots of the spatial voltage distribution across the system. The technique h...

A technique for the measurement and possible rehabilitation of Visual Neglect using the Leap Sensor
(2014)
Eldem, Can
Abstract:
Visual Neglect is a common neuropsychological deficit associated with a person having a Stroke [1]. This deficit is manifested by a Stroke patient’s inability to notice things usually in the left hand side of their visual space. This has a serious impact on their daily lives as they fail to notice obstacles while walking or leave half of a meal uneaten because they are unaware of its existence. Currently, pen and paper-based techniques are used to assess the presence of Visual neglect in patients and there have been a number of rehabilitative programs developed to try and ameliorate the symptoms of Visual Neglect with limited success [2]. Using the Leap Sensor, this project sets out to develop a novel measurement paradigm for the detection and diagnosis of visual neglect as well as laying the ground work for developing a novel rehabilitative intervention (a means of helping stroke patients to either recover from visual neglect or make adaptations do lessen the effect of visual negle...

A thermistor based sensor for flow measurement in water
(2003)
Moore, John P.
Abstract:
There is limited experimental data describing the mixing processes and coherent velocity structures near the surface of the ocean. These play an important part in the interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean and thus affect the climate of the earth. A robust, low cost thermistor based sensor suitable for use in the detection and quantification of velocity structures has been designed and developed. The flow sensor, a thermal anemometer, consists of a self-heated thermistor that is maintained at constant temperature using a feedback control circuit. The thermistor is exposed to the moving fluid and the heat transfer from it is a function of the velocity of the fluid. The sensor has been interfaced with a PC to facilitate data acquisition. A tow tank calibration and testing facility also interfaced to a PC was developed. The sensor is compensated for changes in ambient fluid temperature, which is a major problem for all thermal anemometers that operate in water. The calibrati...

A traffic engineering system for DiffServ/MPLS networks
(2003)
Chpenst, Alexei
Abstract:
This thesis presents an approach to traffic engineering that uses DiffServ and MPLS technologies to provide QoS guarantees over an IP network. The specific problem described here is how best to route traffic within the network such that the demands can be carried with the requisite QoS while balancing the load on the network. A traffic engineering algorithm that determines QoS guaranteed label-switched paths (LSPs) between specified ingress-egress pairs is proposed and a system that uses such an algorithm is outlined. The algorithm generates a solution for the QoS routing problem of finding a path with a number of constraints (delay, jitter, loss) while trying to make best of resource utilisation. The key component of the system is a central resource manager responsible for monitoring and managing resources within the network and making all decisions to route traffic according to QoS requirements. The algorithm for determining QoS-constrained routes is based on the notion of effecti...

A uniaxial stress analysis of the Beryllium pair bound exciton absorption spectrum in silicon
(1986)
Moloney, Keith A
Abstract:
The low temperature luminescence spectrum of silicon doped with beryllium has been found to contain a strong set of no-phonon lines centred around 1-077 eV with phonon assisted replicas at lower energies. The energies of these transitions are as would be expected for an isoelectronic bound exciton (IBE). The thermalization of the no-phonon lines follows the pattern of an exciton bound to an axially symmetric centre. It has already been proposed that when Be is doped into Si the majority of the Be forms substitutional-interstitial pairs, which would be axial isoelectronic centres. The strength and lifetimes of the absorption lines of the centre are consistent with the IBE assignment. Zeeman studies of the luminescence spectra show that the centre has a <100> axis. The temperature variations in the phonon sidebands are not obviously distinctive of either a donor or an acceptor-like IBE. However while the series of excited states of the exciton as observed in absorption cannot be...

A voltammetric study of some heterocyclic mercaptans
(1988)
Lynch, Brian
Abstract:
The four mercaptans studied were 2-mercaptopyridine (2MP), 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide (2MP-0), 2-mercaptopyrimidine (2MPr), and 2-mercapto-4-methylpyrimidine.HCl (2MmPr). The pKg values of each compound were determined by both an ultraviolet spectroscopic method and a polarographic method. The pKa values calculated by each technique were in good agreement. The reversibilty of each compound's electrode reaction was assessed from their sampled direct current (DC) polarograms, and it was found that each reaction was quasireversible in nature. The electrocapillary (EC) curves of 2MP and 2MP-0 indicated that the product of their corresponding electrode reactions (a mercury thiolate salt) was adsorbed at the electrode surface. In cyclic voltammetric (CV) analysis, the oxidation peak current was controlled by diffusion of the mercaptan to the electrode. However, as the concentration was increased, an adsorption controlled oxidation peak was also present in the recorded CV's. The...

A X-ray scanning machine for imaging atomic elements
(1988)
Fenelon, A.G.R
Abstract:
X-ray computer axial tomography is a well established technique for producing images which show the spatial variation of X-ray linear attenuation coefficient within an object. X-ray differential K absorbtion edge tomography is the application of computer axial tomography to form images of selected atomic elements within an object, and these images show the distribution of specific atomic element concentration. The technique is to measure the attenuation of X-rays on either side of the K absorbtion edge of an atomic element with an energy dispersive X-ray detector, and then reconstruct an image of the location and concentration of that element in an object by means of a computer algorithm for display on a colour monitor. This method is able to image several atomic elements in one X-ray scan only of the object, in particular, consecutive elements in the Periodic Table of the Elements. One atomic element only within the object may be better selected by correcting for the X-ray attenu...

Abstract:
This thesis records the research component involved when constructing a set of templates that describe the typical software development project. This set of templates is a major component in the Prompter tool. The Prompter tool was developed by a consortium of software developers including Dublin City University, Catalyst Software and Objectif Technologie. The development of Prompter has been partially assisted under the ESSI fourth framework. Its goal is to provide decision support to the user in the field of Software Project Planning. In the Prompter tool the user provides a detailed description of the starting point of their project. This detailed description is used to provide recommendations by a built-in critiquing system. This value of this advice is based upon the accuracy and relevance of the data that the user provides. This research had two mam objectives. Abstract:
Traditionally broadcasting and telecommunications have been regarded as completely separate sectors Broadcasting as a transmission system was inseparable from the broadcast content Alternatively, telecommunication networks were the sole providers of voice and basic data telephony services But as technology developed and both markets began to offer similar services, the regulatory dividing lines between Internet, broadcasting and telecommunications services have begun to blur Broadcasting as a transmission system is becoming detached from the broadcast content Even though these markets are technically converging the issue of access to content and the licensing of content providers over these new delivery platforms to carry their services remain unresolved The liberalisation of both markets may make a significant difference to the production o f content and the access of such programming content to pay-television and Free-to-Air viewers. Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on the experimental verification and computational modelling of refractive components for operation in the terahertz frequency band for future missions to measure the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. The specific components that were characterised were a set of dielectric lenses. These were made as part of a European Space Agency contract to further the refractive technology in the terahertz band of the frequency spectrum. Two different types of prototype lens were made for this project in Cardiff University and testing performed at Maynooth University (MU) and Cardiff University. An antireflection coating was applied to the prototype lenses and measured to test its effectiveness. During the manufacturing process some issues were detected, including a difference in refractive index between the finished lens and the sample batch material. In addition the lenses were found to have become warped during the application of the antireflection coatin...
