Achievement related behaviour in gifted children - a case study approach
(1991)
Kenny, Helen
Abstract:
This thesis explores achievement-related behaviour m a group of twenty-two gifted children living m Dublin. The literature relating to giftedness and motivation is reviewed. The methodology is described. The children's home and school backgrounds are described m terms of factors believed to influence motivation and achievement. Conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of the home and school as environments for facilitating achievement. The homes, on the whole, are found to provide the type of background generally associated with the development of gifts and talents. Gifted children are found to have problems m Dublin schools. These problems concern the content and difficulty level of work assigned, the pace of progress, teacher feedback, working conditions and discipl'1 nary regimes. Reference is made to the effect of perceived demand/ acceptance by parents and teachers on the child's motivation. Children's self-concepts, thinking styles, attitudes to school ...

Acoustic analysis of the effects of alcohol on the human voice
(1998)
Cooney, Orla
Abstract:
An experiment has been designed and implemented to determine the physical effects of alcohol on the human voice Sustained phonation and prescribed text voice recordings were taken from twelve volunteers at different stages of alcohol consumption. A computer based analysis has been earned out on these voice recordings to determine whether a significant change in voice frequencies occurs when alcohol has been consumed. The effect of alcohol consumption on sentence duration has also been investigated. The results obtained from the analysis show that there is no association between the fundamental frequency of a sustained phonation and the level of alcohol consumption (regression coefficient = 0 146, F = 0 078, df= 71, p= 0 781). Similar results are recorded for the formant frequencies. For the utterance of vowel sounds within spoken sentences it was found that the fundamental frequency rose on average by 1 7Hz (std err = 0 57, F = 8 9, df = 237, p = 0 003) per ml alcohol per kilogram b...

Acoustic emission analysis of the effect of a 2D wedge shaped blade on the compact bone cutting process
(2006)
Safari, Ashkan
Abstract:
Surgeons may use a number of cutting instruments such as osteotomes and chisels to cut bone during an operative procedure. The initial loading of cortical bone during the cutting process results in the formation of microcracks in the vicinity of the cutting zone with main crack propagation to failure occuring with continued loading. When a material cracks, energy is emitted in the form of Acoustic Emission (AE) signals that spread in all directions, therefore, AE transducers can be used to monitor the occurrence and development of microcracking and crack propagation in cortical bone. In this research, number of AE signals (hits) and related parameters including amplitude, duration and absolute energy (abs-energy) were recorded during the indentation cutting process by a wedge blade on cortical bone specimens. The cutting force was also measured to correlate between load-displacement curves and the output from the AE sensor. The results from experiments show AE signals increase ...

Adaptation of English Literature Texts in the Context of the Junior Certificate: A Student-Centred and Theoretical Interrogation.
(2013)
Abstract:
The idea for this thesis first came to light while teaching my first year students the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I was asked why they had to read the novel when a film had already been made. In today‘s fast-paced society, many people rely on films rather than the written word yet, for the purposes of the Irish State Examinations, students need to have a deep insight of the written text at hand. Throughout this thesis, I will argue the importance of utilizing filmic adaptations within the classroom while at the same time highlighting the importance of the limitations of this medium. Adaptations are not mirror images of the source text. Directors, scriptwriters, producers and actors all put their own indelible mark on a film and therefore can often change the meaning, story or characters. To rely solely on this medium would drastically effect a student‘s understanding and learning of a particular text. I intend to use four primary texts and their filmic counterparts; To Ki...

Adaptive buffer power save mechanism for mobile multimedia streaming
(2007)
Adams, Janet
Abstract:
With the proliferation of wireless networks, the use of mobile devices to stream multimedia is growing in popularity. Although the devices are improving in that they are becoming smaller, more complex and capable of running more applications than ever before, there is one aspect of them that is lagging behind. Batteries have seen little development, even though they are one of the most important parts of the devices. Multimedia streaming puts extra pressure on batteries, causing them to discharge faster. This often means that streaming tasks can not be completed, resulting in significant user dissatisfaction. Consequently, effort is required to devise mechanisms to enable and increase in battery life while streaming multimedia. In this context, this thesis presents a novel algorithm to save power in mobile devices during the streaming of multimedia content. The proposed Adaptive-Buffer Power Save Mechanism (AB-PSM) controls how the data is sent over wireless networks, achieving sign...

Adaptive space-meshing strategies for the numerical solution of parabolic partial differential equations in one space dimension
(1990)
Neary, Paul P
Abstract:
The effectiveness of adaptive space-meshing in the solution of one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is assessed. Present day PDE software typically involves discretisation in space (using Finite Differences or Finite Elements) to produce a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) which is then solved routinely using currently available high quality ODE integrators. Such approaches do not attempt to control the errors in the spatial discretisation and th e task of ensuring an effective spatial approxim ation and num erical grid are left entirely to the user. Numerical experiments with Burgers’ equation demonstrate the inadequacies of this approach and suggest the need foradaptive spatial m eshing as the problem evolves. The currently used adaptive m eshing techniques for parabolic problems are reviewed and two effective strategies are selected for study. Numerical experim ents dem onstrate their effectiveness in term s of reduced com putational ove...

Adequacy Assessment of the Irish Generation System Including Wind Capacity
(2005)
Carr, William
Abstract:
<p>Adequacy assessment of generation capacity is a statistical measure of the ability of existing or planned generation plant to meet predicted levels of electrical demand. Complications arise in this calculation because at any point in time the exact level of capacity available is variable due to planned and forced outages. Planned outrages is a term used to describe the period during the year when a generation unit is required to be shut down for maintenance work to be carried out. The duration of this outrage is normally known and its timing can be chosen. Forced outages describe the random failure that can occur that lead to a unit being shut down for repair. Due to the random nature of forced outages, regardless of the level of capacity in a system, 100% reliability cannot be guaranteed. The goal of this work is to investigate generation adequacy assessment in an Irish context. In this thesis the literature review in the area that was undertaken is outlined. Details of ho...

Adjustment to amputation and psychological distress: an examination of the intervening role of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth
(2013)
Mac Conaill, Susan
Abstract:
Successful adjustment to amputation can be quantified in a number of ways. Physical measures such as prosthesis use, mobility indices, and activities of daily living have traditionally been suggested as outcome measures in the literature. More recently, the importance of psychological outcomes is gaining attention. This study was based in a regional prosthetic, orthotic, and limb-absence rehabilitation unit. It was developed in order to provide an overview of a range of issues affecting patients, in a multidisciplinary setting. Sixty-two participants completed self-report questionnaires on a range of constructs while attending the unit. From this general study, a central study evolved looking specifically at the relationship between adjustment to amputation and psychological distress, and the possibility of a moderating and/or mediating effect of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth on this relationship. Significant relationships between adjustment to amputation and psychol...

Adolescent Involvement in Alcohol and Drug Use
(1998)
Ruane, Deirdre
Abstract:
Macken defines a drug in scientific terms "as any substance other than food which by its chemical nature affects the structure or function of a living organism". (Macken 1975:7). There are a wide range of synthetic and organic materials that can be labelled drugs. Such materials would include alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, the opiates and also the hundreds of medicines to be found in chemist shops. Our society is a drug taking society, that is a pill for every ill. There are drugs for sleeping, headaches, stomach ailments, almost everything really. When young children see drugs being so openly used there is no wonder, they will experiment with more illicit drugs. Although illicit drugs are frowned upon, a blind eye may be turned on alcohol or the usage of prescribed drugs. Alcohol in fact is a substance which is used greatly among adolescents and it may lead to the use of more illicit drugs.

Powell, Paul
Abstract:
The purpose of the research reported here is to investigate the requirements of a system which will aid a designer in moving from the functional specification of a new product to a detailed Lcchnical specification of the polymer required, and to develop a system for (his purpose. A very wide range of products can be made from polymers and over 5000 polymers are commercially available. The designer usually interacts with a polymer expert and together they try to specify the polymer properties required. Over 150 parameters are involved. Once values have been assigned to these parameters existing databases can be used to identify a suitable material. Polymer experts are scarcc and there is a need for a system which wilt allow the designer to specify the parameter values dictated by the functional requirements of the design. A number of problems are identified in this area. Some of these are of a terminological and communication nature and arise from the wide range of the application a...

Amino acid interactions of spiropyran
(2008)
Dalton, Gene
Abstract:
A solution phase study was carried out to explore the interactions between the spiropyran molecule in its merocyanine zwitterionic merocyanine 'open' form and amino acids. The principal amino acids chosen for investigation were β-Alanine, L-Phenylalanine and 8-Aminocaprylic acid. Both single phase and two-phase switching experiments were undertaken to document the photochromic interconversion between spiropyran and merocyanine in the presence of these amino acids, compared to a water blank. A kinetics study was then carried out to examine how the rate of decay of the coloured merocyanine back to the closed spiropyran was affected by the presence of amino acids. Results show that there are significant differences in the decay rate depending on which amino acid was present. There are several factors which may be involved in how the different amino acids affect the decay rate of the merocyanine, such as the relative polarity of the solution. A significant stabilisation eff...

An Activity Theory Evaluation of a User Interface for a Web-based Virtual Research Environment (VRE)
(2015)
Yang, Lu
Abstract:
Activity Theory is a framework or descriptive tool which is commonly used in Human-computer Interaction. In particular, it is used more and more in the design and evaluation of some collaborative systems such as a modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment. Activity Theory offers many advantages to interface design for interactive systems when compared with the traditional cognitive psychology approach. This is because the traditional cognitive method cannot penetrate the human side. Therefore, the thorough analysis of human activities in Activity Theory makes it an effective and efficient method for evaluation and design of a system. There is currently some ongoing research work on the design or evaluation of interactive systems, in particular commercial information systems. However, none of them are about online virtual research environments. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the interface of an online virtual research environment called CRADLE using Activity Theo...

An analyser and generator for Irish inflectional morphology using finite-state transducers
(2002)
Uí Dhonnchadha, Elaine
Abstract:
Computational morphology is an important step in natural language processing. Finite-state techniques have been applied successfully in computational phonology and morphology to many of the world’s major languages. Celtic languages, such as Modern Irish, present unique and challenging morphological features that to date have not been addressed using finite-state technology. This thesis presents a finite-state morphology of Irish developed using Xerox Finite-State Tools. To the best of our knowledge, such a resource does not exist. The computational model, implemented as a finite-state transducer, encodes the inflectional morphology of nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Other parts of speech are also included in the interests of language coverage. The implementation is a strictly lexicalised design: the morphotactics of stems and affixes are encoded in the lexicon using replace rule triggers. Word mutations are then implemented as a series of replace rules written as regular expressions....

An Analysis of Changes in the Long Term Characteristics of River Flows in the Munster Blackwater Catchment
(2012)
Nicholson, Oliver
Abstract:
This project is an analysis of the changing characteristics of river flows in the Munster Blackwater catchment. The portion of the Blackwater catchment above the river flow gauge at Kilavullen was the focus of this study. This is amongst the oldest continuous flow stations in the country with continuous flow data available from 1955 to the present day. Indeed, it can be said that prior to the 1950’s Ireland did not possess a formal continuous flow gauging network, which inhibits the examination of long term trends in Irish river flows. To examine the long-term characteristics of flow at the Kilavullen gauge, the 54 years of flow data that are available are insufficient and a method of extending the flow record at the site was required. Fortunately, organised precipitation and temperature measurements in Ireland date back further than their river flow counterparts. Within this study digital and historical paper based precipitation and temperature records from Met Éireann were compile...

An analysis of conformation and performance variables in potential three day event horses in Ireland
(2010)
Morscher, Soraya
Abstract:
Eventing is the ultimate test of speed, endurance, obedience and athleticism and the importance of such qualities in horses date back to cavalry times where such attributes were deciding factors in wars. The Irish Sport Horse is the leading studbook for eventing for the last 15 years (WBFSH, 2009). In order to keep the Irish Sport Horse at the top of this sport, talented animals have to be identified early. To identify elite horses early, studbooks all over the world employ conformation assessment as an indicator for pre-selection and suitability. Since the new format of eventing was introduced, opinions on what type of horse is suitable for the sport are divided. Currently in Ireland, selection of young event horses is not carried out by any of the studbooks. The Future Event Horse League (FEHL) offers owners of potential event horses a competition to test their abilities. The league is run in a different format to eventing, and as part of the competitions, judges score the potenti...

An Analysis of English-Medium Press Coverage of the Treaty Ports as an Issue in Irish Neutrality , 1938 -1943
(2000)
Coolahan, William
Abstract:
It is through the press that we can gain insights into the feelings and opinions of the Irish, British and the United States populations regarding the treaty ports issue and the impact it had on their lives during the war. The pattern of public opinion and how it changed at various stages of the war from acceptance of the return of the ports, to hostility and back to acceptance again, can be gleaned through the press. It is in the recording and analysis of this, which has not, to my knowledge, ever been attempted before, that this thesis gains its value.

An Analysis of Hydrological Model Uncertainty at the Local Stage of a Climate Change Impact Assessment in the Suir Catchment
(2010)
Murphy, Nuala
Abstract:
This thesis presents an analysis of uncertainty at the local stage of a climate impact assessment. Impact model structural uncertainty and uncertainty due to equifinality of parameter sets are evaluated, in addition to uncertainty due to GCMs and emissions scenarios. The Suir catchment is employed as a case study area to analyse the changes in catchment hydrology and in future flood magnitude and frequency relationships due to climate change. Two lumped conceptual rainfall-runoff models of different degrees of complexity are forced with the output of three GCMs and two emissions scenarios (A2 and B2) downscaled to synoptic station level by empirical statistical downscaling (Fealy and Sweeney, 2007). In the analysis of changes to catchment hydrology for the 2050s and the 2080s, GCM uncertainty is the greatest source of uncertainty. However, by the 2080s, uncertainty due to equifinality of parameter sets and model structure is also a significant source of uncertainty, with increases i...

An Analysis of Teachers’ use of ICT in a Selection of Irish Schools
(2005)
Mulcahy, Patricia
Abstract:
The Government of Ireland has made a large financial investment in the field of Information and Communication Technology in the Irish educational sector. The Author was interested to discover how teachers have benefited from this investment. A questionnaire and interview based study was conducted in a number of primary and secondary schools. This allowed for the selection of ICT interested teachers for interviews. The interviews were designed to cover the range of uses that teachers were making of the technology. This included class preparation and in class use. The interviews concluded by offering the teachers an opportunity to voice their opinions as to the future of ICT in Irish classrooms. The teachers suggested strategies that could be implemented to increase the amount of ICT usage by teachers in Irish classrooms. This study showed that only a minority of teachers are actually making regular use of ICT for class preparation or in class with their students. However, the majorit...

Abstract:
A model had been designed for a Community school for a small town in fulfilment of a written assignment during the first year of the writer's post-graduate course. This model embraced education from pre-school through primary, middle and senior levels to further education for individuals and for community. The population of this parish is approximately three thousand. Within the entire parish there is a variety of "communities", from at one extreme, those living in affluence, prosperity and luxury to the other extreme where exists social and economic deprivation that impinges on the day to day efforts to live in a community that offers a meagre sense of fulfilment as well as constraints of human development and of self-actualization. The further education plan of this proposed community school was characterized by a diversity of courses, a flexibility of methods, an adaptability of curricula and a variety of educational venues in order to embrace effectively this com...

Abstract:
<p>Road traffic accidents are a significant cause of deaths worldwide and there is a global focus on understanding accident contributory factors and implementing prevention strategies. Although accident statistics are steadily improving, effective prevention must be persistent, evidence based and properly resourced. This research aimed to extract fatal traffic accident prediction from UK STATS19 accident data using C5.0 and Chaid decision trees and Bayes net classification models. Data was grouped as either fatal or non-fatal. The class imbalance due to fatal accident infrequency was considered and data transformation and sampling techniques were applied to increase prediction likelihood. Chaid was used for supervised discretisation and proved effective in identifying homogeneous subgroups. SPSS Modeler was used for data preparation and model build. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision and ROC curves. The experiment design and data preparation appr...

Abstract:
This study approaches the organ compositions of Maurice Duruflé from an analytical point of view. With the standard categories of form, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm and melody as a general frame of reference, each composition will be examined in its own terms. In this way it is hoped to form a general impression of the composer's style and method. Each analysis will be preceded by a brief commentary which will include relevant information concerning the composition, publication and nature of the work in question. The work-list is taken from an article on Duruflé by Gwilyrn Beechey in The Music Review issue of May 1971. House style follows that of the Royal Musical Association.

Abstract:
Plagiarism is a major problem in every discipline and Computer Science courses are no different. It is very common for students to submit their peers programming assignment as their own. This practice is unfair and also halts the learning process of the students who choose to copy. This research investigates the performance of various plagiarism detection tools like MOSS, JPlag and Plaggie2 . Controlled changes were made to a code file, and the sensitiveness of the various tools to those changes were determined. Plaggie2 with its algorithm of tokenization followed by string comparison was found to have acceptable performance for our tests. It is also open source whereas the other tools are proprietary and web based. Therefore Plaggie2 was incorporated with Web-CAT. Web-CAT is a flexible, automated grading system designed to process computer programming assignments. It serves as a learning environment for software testing tasks and helps automatically assess student assignments. The ...

Abstract:
This study is a qualitative appreciative inquiry into how students of an undergraduate Ed. and Training programme are prepared for diversity. The setting for the study is the School of Education Studies at Dublin City University and the research involves a review of programmes and moudule intentions and qualitative data collected from final year students, academic staff and alumni of the programme. The study includes a literature review that examines the conceptualisation of diversity and looks at diversity as a consequence of a changing world. It then examines current policy and practice in relation to diversity and education in the EU and in ireland. The philosophical basis for the study is constructivism and aspects of an Appreciative Inquiry (AI)approach are used to give a structure and a focus to the gathering and analysing of data. The study further suggests how AI can be used as a model of course evaluation. Findings arise directly from the observations made by study partic...

An approach from a Vygotskian viewpoint to the teaching of poetry in German in the Irish primary school. An Empirical Study.

Hennessy, Peter
Abstract:
This study attempts to explore an approach to the appreciation of poetry in a foreign language, in this case German, by children with a limited competency in that language. The study focuses on the child in the context of the present curriculum for Irish primary schools. Based on a socio-cultural constructivist ethos, it examines a step by step mediated approach to the appropriation of poetry in which group interaction and dialogue play an important role. The study contains a review of the history of the introduction of foreign language learning into the primary sector, from the introduction of the Curaclam na Bunscoile (The New Curriculum) of 1971, until the release in November 2009 of the NCCA 2008 report ‘Modern Languages in the Primary school curriculum Feasibilities and Futures’. The study argues against the main premise of the report, the substitution of a language awareness approach in place of language competency. The study is based on the socio-cultural theories of consciou...

An archaeology of Irish cinema: Ireland's subaltern, migrant and feminist film cultures (1973-87)
(2003)
Connolly, Maeve
Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of an Irish film avant-garde, from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s. The thesis argues that this period was marked by an historically specific intersection between Irish and international film cultures, which can be traced through contemporary film theory, cultural policy and critical practice. This period witnessed a revitalisation of indigenous production, and new initiatives in Irish arts policy, but many important Irish filmmakers trained or began their careers in London and New York, while others were supported by cultural and political agencies outside the state. The thesis focuses on the work of five filmmakers (Bob Quinn, Joe Comerford, Thaddeus O’Sullivan, Vivienne Dick and Pat Murphy) and on three key areas of intersection between Irish and international film culture, associated with the ‘subaltern’, migration and feminism. Through close readings of specific films, supported by interviews with selected filmmakers, distributors and archiv...
