Who, What and Why... Subject Choices for Senior Cycle in a Second Level School
(2001)
Guinan, Anne Marie
Abstract:
The subjects that the students chose for study at second level have a long-term consequence on the qualifications they receive from their schooling and the careers they are in a position to contemplate. The aim o f this study is to attempt to analyse what subjects are most commonly chosen, who is choosing these subjects and why they are opting for the subjects in question. The methods used in this research are questionnaires and interviews. The students are from an all girls secondary school, which eliminates gender as a variable in this study. However gender is discussed as a factor in shaping the academic self-image of the student. Similarly, as the school is in a middle class suburb and the students come from a relatively homogenous middle class background, class will be looked at only as a factor in shaping the aforementioned academic selfimage. The data and findings in this study are presented in the context of the current National picture and the current academic writing on th...

Abstract:
Not only are demographic changes taking place within the Irish population but in addition, significant challenges are being imposed on higher education providers to retain as many students as possible within the higher education system. Yorke (1999) noted that many students leave higher education prematurely and about 50% of these students do so during, or at the end of their first year in college (DIT, 2003). Some non-completion of courses is unavoidable and should not be viewed as failure by the student, tutor or college, but acknowledged that dropping out is likely (Oliver, 2001). However, a lot of non-completion is preventable and it is the responsibility of the college to help retain their students (Yorke, 1999). Retention rates in Universities, DIT and other institutes have been the subject of a number of recent studies (Flanagan et al, 2000; Morgan et al, 2001; Finnegan and Russell, 2000; Morgan and Kelleghan, 2002), and numerous studies by Costello et al. Wideband Dual Polarized Directional Base Station Antenna
(2006)
Lerma, Francisco L.
Abstract:
<p>The thesis presents a study of different microwave radiators for wireless applications in the frequency range of 2.2 – 2.5GHz. The performance of microstrip patch antennas and dual polarized dipole antennas were evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. A single microstrip patch and a four- element microstrip array were simulated, fabricated and tested. Simulation was carried out by the finite integration time domain (FITD) method. Polarization diversity is realised using crossed dipoles printed elements. For the crossed dipole elements, two different feed arrangements were studied. Parameters such as return loss, isolation, radiation pattern, gain and bandwidth were measured and found to be in good agreement with simulation. Several techniques were used to obtain broadband performance. Balanced and unbalanced feeder systems, substrates effects and the use of planar elements were investigated. Significant achievements were achieved in bandwidth and port-to-port iso...

Wireless Network Measurement: VoIP and 802.11e.
(2007)
Dangerfield, Ian
Abstract:
802.11 wireless networks are a convenient way to provide ‘last-hop’ network connections in many environments. However the distributed nature of their operation poses problems in providing quality of service guarantees, which are vital for providing interactive services such as Voice over IP. In this thesis we will review the operation of 802.11 and it’s extended MAC layer, 802.11e. We will then review some analytical models used to explore the behaviour of the 802.11 MAC and test some of the assumptions underlying these models. We confirm that our testbed operates according to the standards before using it to explore the behaviour of VoIP traffic, using it as a test case to examine the provision of quality of service guarantees via the extended 802.11e MAC. This work is based on several papers [9] [19] [10].

Women and Crime in Nineteenth Century Ireland
(1992)
Bailey, Inez
Abstract:
The history of women and crime is a poorly documented aspect of the lives of Irish women in the nineteenth century. Contemporary writing on the subject was very limited despite the great interest in the whole area of criminology.1 Much of the reason for this, surely lies in the fact that crimes by women constituted only a small fraction of known crime, and this more often than not was of a petty nature. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate who these women were, what crimes they committed, what happened to them in prison and where they went upon discharge.

Women and Madness in Nineteenth-Century Ireland
(1997)
Parry, Joanne
Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the experience of women regarding mental disorder in nineteenth-century Ireland. The central argument of this thesis is based on two claims. First, that mental disorder was socially constructed in nineteenth-century Ireland, and second, that the social construction of mental disorder was permeated by gender and other social phenomena .

Wood Chip Heating for Commercial Buildings in Ireland: an Analysis of Supply Methods and Financial Viability
(2009)
Berkeley, Ciaran
Abstract:
<p>Ireland has three central issues regarding the supply and use of fuel and energy: import dependency; competitiveness; and greenhouse gases emissions. Ireland is ranked as one of the most import dependent states in the EU, with over 90% of its fuel sourced fiom abroad [IAEA, 20051. Combined with rapidly fluctuating oil and gas wsts and uncertainty with future supply, it is essential that Ireland find a more secure and sustainable alternative to fossil hels. Wood chip represents one such alternative energy source since it is locally produced and considered to be carbon-neutral. The main objective of this research is to assess the financial and environmental feasibility of wood chip as a heat source in Irish commercial buildings. The commercial range of boilers, finm 50kW up to 400kW, offers a good range of potential feasible and non-feasible arrangements that will provide important information regarding correct sizing and use. Secondary objectives include optimising productio...

Work and School A Case Study
(1977)
Lyons, Patrick J
Abstract:
This is a study of young workers. It was undertaken as a comparative analysis of the occupational and educational experiences of school leavers. As such it focuses on the link between the educational system and the labour market and, in particular, on the relevance of the educational experiences of this group of young people to the jobs they entered and implicitly to the lifestyles they lead. Education performs a key function in industrialized society, in transmitting "cultural values and behaviour patterns of the society to its young and potential members". Education, through the agency of the school, performs a dual function - "to internalize in its pupils both commitments and capacities for the successful performance of their adult roles .... and .... to allocate these human resources within the role structure of the adult society. Added to the manifest function of socialization there is this latent function of manpower allocation. The development of this view is t...

Work as therapy in Irish district asylums: 1850 - 1880
(2014)
Conway, Frances
Abstract:
Background: There is a dearth of research in relation to the Irish history of occupational therapy. Moral treatment and in turn work therapy in asylums, is widely acknowledged to have led to the materialisation of the discipline of occupational therapy (Hall 2013). This study looked at work as therapy in the Irish District Asylums, between 1850 and 1880 as documented by the Inspectors of Lunacy. Objective: To explore the Inspectors of Lunacy Reports on the District Asylums during the period 1850-1880 and ascertain the Inspectors perception of the use of work. Methods: As part of a larger research project, historical documentary research was used to glean data from the annual, Inspectors of Lunacy Reports, between 1850 and 1880. Data was analysed using thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2006) and coding focused solely on reference to patient work. Findings: The terms work, employment, labour and occupation were used interchangeably .Three themes arose: Forms of work, “curative” work...

Work ready: an occupational therapy response to the experience of graduate unemployment
(2013)
Lynch, Maeve
Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis is to augment the evidence available to occupational therapists working with unemployed people. Unemployment is a pressing and growing social issue and throughout this thesis the important contribution occupational therapy can make to address the wide ranging consequences of unemployment and supporting re-entry to the labour market is considered. This thesis consists of three papers taking a sequential approach to addressing the social issue of unemployment. Although a body of research on interventions for the unemployed is available, it is spread across many disciplines. Paper I synthesises this disperse evidence base in order to draw implications and recommendations for occupational therapy practice with this population. A narrative literature review is presented that aimed to qualitatively appraise research on the topic of prevention or assistance-focused interventions to help individuals find work or improve their well-being whilst unemployed. The ...

Working memory, language, motivation and children's early writing: A three‐year longitudinal study
(2013)
Carroll, Kathleen
Abstract:
The goal of the current research was to study the cognitive processes that support the emergence of writing in young children and to ascertain whether working memory, language ability or motivation to write underlined children's early attempts to learn how to write. Working memory, language ability and the emergent writing skills of 30 Irish children were tested, in a longitudinal study over a three year period, starting at ages 4 to 5 years in their first year of formal education. A cross-sectional study of 31 children in Junior Infants and 13 children from both Senior Infants and First Class was also conducted. Working memory was tested using the Automated Working Memory Assessment (AWMA). Tests of letter names and sounds, morphological knowledge/ grammar were administered. The children completed free writing tasks and writing output was analysed for linguistics features (e.g. spelling errors) as well as creativity, originality and task relevance. Children rated their liking ...

X-ray photoelectron spectrometer calibration and thin film investigations on germanium oxides
(1998)
Deegan, Terri
Abstract:
The first aim of this project was the characterisation of the VG Scientific Clam 100 based, XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). Spectrometer in the Physics department at Dublin City University Detailed energy scale and intensity scale calibrations were carried out using sputter-cleaned Au (Gold), Ag (Silver), Cu (Copper) and Pd (Palladium) foil samples. Analysis of these calibration spectra against standard reference spectra led to an accurate energy calibration and the production of individual transmission functions for the A1 Ka and Mg Ka x-ray radiation sources Reference spectra for both energy and intensity calibration were taken from the VAMAS, Versailles project on Advanced Materials and Standards, spectra library. The second part of the project was earned out in the area of thin film thickness determination, namely native oxide on germanium(lOO) and G e (lll) surfaces. An XPS study of the removal of the native oxides from these surfaces by a hydrofluoric (HF) acid based ...

Young Offenders Perceptions of Education
(1999)
Fitzpatrick, Aine
Abstract:
<p>The aim of this research was to study the background of boys referred to an assessment centre by the juvenile courts, and to look in particular at the area of educational history. More specifically the study sought to ascertain young offenders own perceptions of education. The research was carried out in a number of phases: Phase one consisted of the accumulation of baseline data on the backgrounds of young offenders in Ireland through the analysis of the files held in a juvenile assessment centre. The data from the files was analysed, categorised and coded using a content analysis procedure. However, it was decided that these data, though useful in itself, could yield richer information if used in a more proactive way. On reviewing the literature on young offenders education it was found that there was a lack of research carried out from the young offenders perspective. As a consequence the categories from the coding schema were used as elements in a repertory grid for the...

Young People and Depression: A Sociological Perspective.
(2003)
Barnes, Emma
Abstract:
Depression haunts the lives of many, especially our young people, this is becoming more and more apparent in Western countries. Depression is a common mental disorder characterized by sadness, loss of interest in activities and by decreased energy. Depression is no respecter of status, intelligence, class or race. It can strike anyone at any time. The severity of depression can range from mild to acute. At the most severe end of the continuum individuals can experience life threatening and profound feelings of despair and sadness. Depression is differentiated from normal mood changes by the extent of its severity, the symptoms and the duration of the disorder. The aim of my study is to look at young people’s experience of depression. This will be done by using interviews with several suffers of depression. They will tell their stories of how they came to realize they were depressed, challenges which they faced with the medical profession, elements of stigma and in some cases the los...

Young, gifted and underachieving: Examining the role of mentoring in assisting underachieving highly-able students achieve their educational potential.
(2012)
Laurenson, Pauline
Abstract:
The education of gifted and talented pupils is a topical issue and one of growing concern to many parents and teachers. This was of particular concern in the school in which I was a teacher. The school determined students as being of high ability when they scored in the top ten percent of the school population as indicated by standardised tests they completed prior to and upon admission. These tests were the Cognitive Abilities Test 3 and the Drumcondra Reasonsing Test. Teachers were also encouraged to identify students who they perceived to be highly able in their subject area. The aim of this study was to examine reasons why pupils of high ability might underachieve and to address these issues through the use of a mentoring project. The mentors used positive psychology and metacognition strategies in an effort to get the students to achieve their potential. Another aim of the study was to consider how a project of this nature might be managed in a large secondary school wit...
