An assessment and analysis of dietary practices of Irish jockeys
(2014)
O'Loughlin, Gillian
Abstract:
Background: Horse racing is a weight category sport in which jockeys must chronically maintain a low body mass to compete, over a protracted season. The need to relentlessly align body mass with racing limits appears to encourage the use of short-term and potentially dangerous acute weight loss strategies. The purpose of this study was to investigate and assess the dietary habits of Irish Jockeys using established methods as well as incorporating novel sensing technologies. Methods: The primary aim was achieved through two separate but related studies. Study one: Dietary intake was assessed in 18 professional Irish Jockeys (11 Flat and 7 National Hunt) over a typical racing week, using a standard 7-day food diary. Study Two: There are limitations associated with the traditional methods of dietary assessment therefore a new innovative method of dietary assessment using novel sensing technologies, the Microsoft SenseCam, a wearable camera, was evaluated. The SenseCam was worn by 17 ...

An assessment of algal biodiversity and water quality in Loughs Atedaun, Cullaun and Inchiquin, three lakes on the river Fergus.
(2013)
Abstract:
This study uses limnological techniques and numerical methods to examine the periphyton and phytoplankton assemblages of Lough Atedaun, Cullaun and Inchiquin. Monthly and seasonal variations in periphyton and phytoplankton assemblages were examined from littoral and open water sites within each lake. Samples were taken on a monthly basis in each lake from November 2004 to October 2005. Cell biovolume values for the most abundant phytoplankton were calculated for each of the phytoplankton samples taken from Lough Atedaun, Cullaun and Inchiquin. Seasonal changes in environmental variables were described on a monthly and seasonal basis and the trophic status of each lake was examined. The influence of environmental variables, between site variation and time of sampling on the distribution and composition of the phytoplankton based on cell count data was investigated with the use of Canonical Correspondents Analysis. (CCA). Results from physico-chemical analysis showed that a seasonal p...

An Assessment of Epiphytic Lichens, Lichen Diversity and Environmental Quality in the Semi-natural Woodlands of Knocksink Wood Nature Reserve, Enniskerry, County Wicklow
(2009)
Mulligan, Lenka
Abstract:
<p>This research work adapted and applied a recently developed method for assessing epiphytic lichen species diversity to the Irish semi-natural woodlands of Knocksink Wood Nature Reserve, Enniskerry, County Wicklow. The study focused on the differences that arise in relation to acidophilous oak woodland (Blechno-Quercetum petraeae) versus ash-hazel woodland (Corylo-Fraxinetum). The research also addressed differences in relation to the mixed oak-ash-hazel woodland located in Knocksink Wood and the neighbouring woodland at the Powerscourt Waterfall. The frequency of occurrence of lichen species on a defined portion of tree bark was used as an estimate of diversity and to evaluate the degree of environmental stress on the sensitive lichen community. In total 52 lichen taxa were recorded on the trees in the woodlands in Knocksink Wood. The sequence of lichen numbers recorded per tree genera in Knocksink Wood was oak > ash > willow > beech > sycamore. The oak trees in...

An assessment of oestrogenicity in waste water treatment plant influent and effluent using the recombinant yeast screen assay
(2005)
Murray, Ericka
Abstract:
The oestrogenic activity of solid phase-extracted (Empore SDB-XC disks) samples of wastewater influent and effluent in four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Ireland was estimated using the Yeast Oestrogen Screen (YES). Oestrogen activities were expressed as 17p-oestradiol equivalents (EEQ). The oestrogen activity of the effluent was reduced during treatment in the two larger WWTPs by 100% and 45%- 56% respectively, the former being equipped with an extended aeration oxidation ditch with diffused air aeration followed by chemical precipitation and the latter equipped with sequential batch reactors with UV disinfection. However the oestrogenic activity increased by 21% and 29% during treatment on two sampling occasions for a smaller older activated sludge (oxidation ditch) WWTP operating at its population equivalent and the oestrogenic activity also increased by 23% on one sampling occasion for another small WWTP with a trickling filter system operating at its population equival...

An ATM System Model and Wireless Channel Simulation
(2000)
Dunne, Karen
Abstract:
<p>Congestion in the low frequency regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and demand for support of high bandwidth applications has prompted widespread investigations into networking technologies and communications media. Traditional networking technologies such as Ethernet that are not capable of adequately supporting high bandwidth applications (e.g. videoconferencing) are being replaced by high speed, high bandwidth technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). In the communications media market, wireless systems are becoming ubiquitous due to their ease of installation and maintenance costs. In this research, the networking technology of interest is ATM. ATM used a cell switching architecture that allows seamless support for all traffic types. It is also capable of providing guaranteed quality of service to different applications. This research seeks to develop a model of an ATM system in order to simulate the processes of file manipulation of an application in a...

An Audit in Respect of the Electrical Safety Implications for Domestic Electrical Installations
(2012)
Masterson, Noel, [Thesis]
Abstract:
<p>Ireland, throughout the years known as the “Celtic Tiger” experienced a level of growth which culminated in many new developments in the construction sector The building” boom” of those years, was not solely monopolised by the Industrial sector; many owner/occupiers of domestic premises were in a position to develop or upgrade their existing dwellings. Current literature indicates that the poor condition of domestic electrical installations throughout Europe has raised concerns in respect of the safety of the owner/occupier. This study addresses: The quality of Domestic electrical installations, periodic testing, inspection and verification The Rules and regulations as developed by relevant stake holder s within the sector and enforced by the statutory bodies Testing requirements in domestic electrical installations which underpin safety for the occupier. The occupancy and the environmental conditions of the premises as this is an important factor, dictating the fre...

An Augmented Reality System for Urban Environments using a Planar Building Facade Model
(2013)
McClean, Eric
Abstract:
In recent years there has been a widespread adoption of smartphone technology. According to research by Google [Pha12] the U.S., New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland have a smartphone penetration greater than 40 percent. These phones are frequently equipped with with reasonable processing capabilities, internet access, high resolution cameras, and positioning sensors. This widespread adoption coupled with the hardware capability's of current generation smartphones present a great opportunity to develop mobile augmented reality (AR) applications for visualising geospatial information. While smartphones are able to provide geolocalisation through GPS, the lack of accuracy does not allow for precise and robust alignment of the augmented data with the camera image. Computer vision techniques can be used to gain accurate alignment. However, these methods often require the creation a comprehensive 3D model of a scene. This can be intensive to compute and ...

An autoethnographic study of my career path and the implications for practice as a guidance counsellor
(2015)
Golden, Margaret
Abstract:
This is an Autoethnographic Study of my Career Path and the Implications for Practice as a Guidance Counsellor. Using qualitative research methods I examine my own lived experience as a working mother, exploring such issues as self-efficacy, self-confidence, communication and role conflict. In autoethnography, the researcher is the focus of the analysis and to this end, I refer to the data from my personal journal. This thesis is aimed at women, specifically working mothers, who may be dealing with role conflict. Exploring and sharing my own journey in this way has enabled me to address a number of issues regarding my career development. The Heuristic process was instrumental in bringing me to the point of enlightenment. I give some attention to the effect that tacit knowledge has had on my career development, in the hope that this will be of use to other women. My review of the literature in the area of career development for women shows slow progress since the 1960’s. I look at th...

An automated cleaning system for hospitals
(2009)
Griffin, Colin
Abstract:
Insufficient hygienic practices in Irish hospitals coupled with one of the highest number of reported cases of MRSA in Europe have highlighted the need for solutions to aid in the task of cleaning. This automated cleaning system consisted of two robots: a core robot developed separately with navigational and task scheduling capabilities integrated. The cleaning task was carried out by making use of a commercially available Roomba vacuum cleaner which had been adapted to operate in conjunction with the core robot. A uni-directional communications was established; commands were sent from the core robot to the Roomba. A visual analysis software, by the name of RoboRealm, was integrated into the system as the primary component. The initial role of the software was to allow the vacuum robot to orientate itself in order to enable transport from location to destination by means of visually tracking an object of interest. The object was to be located on the rear of the core robot. Subsequen...

An economic analysis of the property services industry in the Republic of Ireland
(1994)
McKenna, David
Abstract:
This study is an economic analysis of the Property Services Industry (PSI) in the Republic of Ireland. It defines the PSI and examines the structure of the industry and its constituent firms. The principal components of PSI output and the key variables which determine the level of output are identified. Data was obtained by means of structured interviews, various published sources and an extensive questionnaire survey circulated to all industry firms. The questionnaire survey was deemed necessary to supplement existing data and provide new additional data not available from published sources. Evaluation was based on statistical analysis, empirical observation and structured interviews. The study confirms the cyclical nature of the industry which broadly applies to both areas of output; agency and professional services. Agency services account for the largest proportion of industry output with residential agency being the most important property sector. The vast majority of the fir...

An Empirical study of the JaMoPP project using code coverage based system tests.
(2010)
Bell, Colin
Abstract:
Model Driven Software Development is an attempt to build software systems by combining the two disciplines of software programming and modelling. But due to the gap in technology, there are a number of problems in using these models to generate the final source code implementation. This has meant that Model Driven Software Development has become a future goal rather than a current reality. The Java Model Parser and Printer project tries to bridge this gap by turning Java into a model. This means that Java can now be used and implemented like any of the other models within the Model Driven Software Development process. This paper will take a look at the effectiveness of the Java Model Parser and Printer project by performing a number of System tests on it. This will help indicate now well the project can transform Java input files to java models. Coverage readings will be taken on these tests to look at how much of the project‟s grammar and abstract syntax tree are being used during ...

An evaluation of a process of strategic planning in the Missionary Society of St. Columban
(1993)
Connolly, Noel
Abstract:
This study is an evaluation of a process of strategic planning in the Missionary Society of St. Columban. Four Regions of the Society, Korea, Fiji, Chile and Britain were taken as a representative sample. The documentation from their planning processes was analysed and 108 members were surveyed by questionnaire. The study found that strategic planning could be profitably used by an international missionary organization and that it could help the Society improve: its sense of direction and unity; communication; participation; and morale. It also proved a valuable instrument for renewal, long-term change and leadership training. The study identifies a number of conditions for successful planning processes in missionary congregations and concludes that different planning approaches are valuable at different times in the life cycle of the organization. In the earlier stages the more rational and formal approach to planning seemed the best approach for the Columbans. Once the members had...

An evaluation of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s critique of Karl Rahner’s theology of the cross
(2016)
Abstract:
This work offers examines the theology of the cross found in Karl Rahner’s writings, with particular regard to Hans Urs von Balthasar’s critique of this area of Rahner’s work . This work maintains that Karl Rahner does have a coherent theology of the cross, albeit that it differs from that of Balthasar’s. This work draws in particular from scholars in the English language. Chapter 1 outlines what is meant by a “theology of the cross”. This is achieved by briefly exploring the approaches to the cross offered by five major theologians. Following on from this, certain key criteria are outlined to determine in the context of the debate between Balthasar and Rahner, what can be deemed necessary to constitute a theology of the cross. Chapter 2 investigates the context of the criticism aimed at Rahner regarding his theology of the cross and serves to evaluate the critique offered by Balthasar. The next two chapters are an examination of where the cross is situated in Rahner’s theology. A c...

An Evaluation of MIRU-VNTR Analysis and Spoligotyping for Genotyping of M. Bovis Isolates and a Comparison on RFLP Typing
(2013)
McLernon, Joanne
Abstract:
<p>Common strain typing methods for differentiation of Mycobacterium bovis isolates include restriction endonuclease analysis (REA), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, spoligotyping and more recently, mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit-variable-number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing. MIRU-VNTR and spoligotyping were evaluated in this study and these typing methods were compared with RFLP typing. A total of 386 M. bovis isolates from cattle, badgers and deer in the Republic of Ireland that had previously been typed by IS6110, polymorphic GC-rich sequence (PGRS) and direct repeat (DR) RFLP were included in the study. An initial panel of VNTR loci was established to analyse the first 60 isolates to determine that six VNTR loci (QUB 11a, QUB 11b, ETR A, 4052, MIRU 26 and 1895) displayed the greatest degree of discrimination between strains. Analysis of these six VNTR loci and spoligotyping was performed on all 386 isolates. RFLP was the method that ...

Abstract:
<p>While active learning for classification problems has received considerable attention in recent years, studies on problems of regression are rare. This paper provides a systematic review of the most commonly used selection strategies for active learning within the context of linear regression. The recently developed Exploration Guided Active Learning (EGAL) algorithm, previously deployed within a classification context, is explored as a selection strategy for regression problems. Active learning is demonstrated to significantly improve the learning rate of linear regression models. Experimental results show that a purely diversity-based approach to</p>

An evaluation of the AnCO training service: a contextual study of the national manpower development process
(1995)
Sheehy, P. J
Abstract:
This is a study of the AnCO Training Advisory Service set up by government to promote skills development within industry. The research reported here attempts to account for the rise and decline of the division. It asks why an expensive mechanism for state intervention in the labour market failed to have the desired effect, and why it took so long to have the failure recognised. At a more generic level the study examines the role and effectiveness of state agencies which have an intervening function. The research highlights the failure of manpower policy literature to explain the empirical data. The study applies the insights gained from the literature on strategic change, and draws heavily on the context-process-outcome meta-framework developed by Pettigrew (1985; 1990), in order to understand the process which the Training Advisory Service was promoting. The Advisory Service is studied on a longitudinal basis, from its genesis to the formation of FAS, after which it was effectively...

Abstract:
There is a need for innovative, effective, and sustainable initiatives aimed at increasing the physical activity levels of the general population, particularly those who are least active (Hellénius 2011; DoHC, HSE 2009; Durstine et al. 2013). The purpose of this study was to evaluate an adapted model of exercise on prescription – called the Green Prescription Programme - that was piloted in a number of communities in Co. Donegal during 2011 / 2012. The Green Prescription Programme was delivered in partnership between local community groups, local health professionals and the Health Service Executive. The programme involved the referral of suitable patients from health professionals onto a supported community-based walking programme. Community participants could also self-refer onto the programme. This evaluation aimed to (a) determine the feasibility and acceptability of implementing the programme; (b) determine the impacts of programme participation on the participants; (c) to dete...

An evaluation of the theory of export market entry strategies with specific reference to the Irish food and drink industry
(1990)
Quinlan, Reginald
Abstract:
Due to the limited size of the Irish economy and the opportunities for firm growth abroad, many Irish firms are turning to exporting, generally accepted to be the first crucial step on the road to full internationalisation. On a theoretical level, this thesis traces the evolution of international trade and outlines current trends in international business. Further, it examines the internationalisation process focussing primarily cn the incremental approach and noting the increasingly popular alternative, networking. The importance of developing the most appropriate and hence successful market entry stragegy is stressed throughout, with detailed analysis concerning choice of entry mode and target market. Exporting as a mode of foreign market entry is discussed and guidelines for the development of a successful, committed export marketing plan are also detailed. The two recent initiatives instigated by the Irish Government to promote exports among small/medium sized Irish firms i.e. G...

Abstract:
<p>The diversity; versus accuracy trade off, has become an important area of research within recommender systems as online retailers attempt to better serve their customers and gain a competitive advantage through an improved customer experience. This dissertation attempted to evaluate the use of diversity measures in predictive models as a means of improving predicted ratings. Research literature outlines a number of influencing factors such as personality, taste, mood and social networks in addition to approaches to the diversity challenge post recommendation. A number of models were applied included DecisionStump, Linear Regression, J48 Decision Tree and Naive Bayes. Various evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, ROC area, mean squared error and correlation coefficient were used to evaluate the model types. The results were below a benchmark selected during the literature review. The experiment did not demonstrate that diversity measures as inputs improve the accurac...

An evolutionary strategy for complex structure determination by low energy electron diffraction
(2001)
Quinn, Paul
Abstract:
Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) has been used extensively in the study of surface structures. Structures are typically determined in a trial and error process whereby theoretical calculations for an initially proposed structure are refined until a good fit to experimentally measured data is found. In this thesis LEED has been used to study the structure of the clean Ni(llO) and N i(lll) surfaces. For the clean Ni(llO) surface a 7% relaxation in the outermost Ni layer spacing is found compared to 0% for the N i(lll) surface. The variation in surface relaxation is explained in terms of the reduccd valence electron density and atomic packing density at the surface. The trial and error approach to determining structures is not only time consuming but can also be highly inaccurate. An automated approach to structure determination using an Evolutionary Strategy called Differential Evolution is developed in this work. The algorithm is found to be extremely fast and reliable and prov...

Abstract:
<p>In 2000, International Sportsworld Communicators Ltd. (ISC) acquired a ten year exclusive commercial rights agreement for the World Rally Championships. Previously the sport attracted a low level of media exposure. ISC planned to market the WRC with the intention of gaining a top five position as a global sports television brand. The main aim of the present study is to examine the marketing strategy of the WRC by ISC. In particular, this study focuses on the strategies taken to increase the Pan European TV coverage for the WRC. ISC identified television as the priority channel for building audience and the brand. The study is a ‘live case study’ that allowed the researcher to monitor and evaluate the process on site, and on an onging basis over a three-year time frame, 2001-2003. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with representatives from 5 different groups, namely ISC Management, Broadcasters, Key Teams, FIA and Event Organisers. Abstract:
Background: Long-term adherence to physical activity (PA) following a cardiac event is uncommon. Interventions aiming to address this issue must take into account the influences and motivations of successful long-term adherers and strive to utilise available resources to ensure cost-effectiveness and sustainability. The purpose of this study was to examine factors influencing sustained adherence to an established Phase IV community-based cardiac rehabilitation programme: HeartSmart. This information was used to design, implement and evaluate an intervention to increase adherence among programme newcomers. Methods: Twenty-four long-term adherers of HeartSmart (N=15 men, 9 women; aged 67.7 years ± 16.7) took part in focus group discussions to determine factors assisting adherence. Results influenced the development of a Peer Mentor (PM) training programme. An Examination of Indicators of Sustainable Development for Tourism
(2007)
Phelan, June, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Sustainable tourism development has been recognised as the dominant paradigm for developing the tourism industry in the twenty first century. This concept gained importance in response to increasing environmental awareness and unease at the rapid use and depletion of natural resources. The United National World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) identifies sustainable tourism development as a preferred means for the future development of the industry. Indicators are an established means of achieving and measuring progress achieved towards sustainable tourism development. Consequently, indicators of sustainable development for tourism have been proposed as the building blocks for sustainable tourism development. Information derived from indicators can be used in planning and managing tourism activities at a destination. Ultimately the identification and inclusion of indicators in planning and monitoring, in the longer term can potentially lead to a destination being managed more s...
