An examination of Irish adult consumer competence: implications for the targeting and content needs of consumer education programmes
(1993)
Gibney, Noel P
Abstract:
Consumer education seeks to help the consumer cope with the complex, producer dominated, contemporary marketplace. However, research has shown that consumer education for adults in all EC member states is not adequate. In order for future consumer education to be optimised and beneficial it must be sensitive to the needs, thus the competence, of the recipients. As the literature suggests knowing how to be a rational, well informed consumer (cognitive competence) does not necessarily lead to rational behaviour (behavioural competence). Therefore to fully assess the consumer education needs of adults it is imperative to examine both their cognitive and behavioural competences. The specific aim of this research was to identify whether cognitive consumer competence affected behaviour, and secondly to identify the socio-demographic variables associated with cognitive competence. The research was carried out on a sample of 500 adults chosen from randomly selected sampling points. The da...

An examination of physical activity participation, sedentary behaviour, health, correlates of physical activity and physical activity enjoyment among Irish adolescents.
(2012)
Chadwick, Sarah
Abstract:
Inactivity is an epidemic among adolescents; underscoring a critical need for action. The aim of this study was to investigate physical activity (PA) participation, sedentary behaviour, physical health, correlates of PA and physical activity enjoyment. The Children’s Sports Participation and Physical Activity Study (2010) used a self-report questionnaire to measure PA participation, sedentary behaviour and demographic, psychological and environmental variables. Physical health measures were aerobic fitness, BMI, waist circumference and blood pressure (BP). Over five thousand adolescents participated in the CSPPA study (N=5397, mean age=13.85 ± 1.97, 10-18 years, 47% male). Males had a higher average of days of MVPA ≥60 per week minutes than females. Females engaged in more social/school based sedentary activities while males engaged in more technological sedentary activities. Activity decreased and sedentary behaviour increased with age. Sedentary behaviour decreased with inc...

An examination of self-report physical activity and its relationship with psychological factors in inflammatory arthritis
(2012)
Larkin, Louise
Abstract:
Background: Inflammatory arthritis (IA) is the term given to a group of chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases that primarily include rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Physical activity (PA), defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure (EE), is important for everyone, including people with RA and PsA. Despite the importance of including PA in the management of these two inflammatory conditions decreased levels of PA have been reported for people with RA. In order to develop interventions aimed at increasing PA in IA determination of the factors associated with PA participation in this population is warranted. Aim: Thus the aim of this thesis was to establish a self-report PA profile of the Irish RA and PsA populations and also to establish the correlates of PA for these two populations. Methodology: Initially a systematic review of the literature was conducted, examining the correlates of PA in the RA and PsA...

An examination of the effectiveness of religious congregations
(1988)
Guy, Mary
Abstract:
This is a study of the attitude to congregational life and change in six Irish religious congregations. A total of 162 religious responded to a detailed questionnaire related to the following topics: communication; participation in the congregation; mission statement, charism; purpose of the congregation; satisfaction with the congregation; leadership; congregational life; work; and change. The study identified a number of negative areas, which must give cause for concern at this crucial stage m the life of many Irish congregations. It also identified a lack of specificity m the mission statements of congregations, which is likely to prevent any evaluation of congregational effectiveness and suggested a number of strategies based on organisational development models.

An examination of the influence of school mediated variables on academic achievement
(1992)
McDonald, John
Abstract:
A study was conducted over three years to examine the influence of school mediated person and environmental variables on academic achievement outcome. The 250 subjects, male and female, were students in the final year of formal secondary education in three schools, who were preparing for their Irish Leaving Certificate examination, a formal nationwide multisubject assessment. The literature of cognitive and learning styles, academic achievement variables, and programmes to cater for individual differences is reviewed. The methodology and rationale for choice of variables is related to recent interactive student, teacher, environment studies. The variables general ability, dogmatism, need achievement, teacher preference, school alienation ,self esteem, attitude to education and curiosity were correlated with academic achievement as measured by performance in the public examinations. Results were controlled for collinearity. After general ability, the most significant correlating vari...

An examination of the nutritional intake and anthropometric status of individuals with an intellectual disability
(2015)
Hoey, Edel
Abstract:
Background The prevalence of overweight and obesity appears greater in persons with an intellectual disability (PwID) than those in the general population. This has been widely reported in the literature. Few studies have examined the nutritional intakes of PwID. The aim of this study is to describe the anthropometric status and the nutritional intakes in PwID. Methods Adults with an ID (16-64 years) were recruited from four ID service provider organisations, in the Republic of Ireland. Almost 2000 PwID were invited to participate in the study and 131 participated in one or more parts. The Survey on Lifestyle and Attitudes to Nutrition (SLAN) 2007 questionnaire was adapted for use in this population. Interviews were carried out face to face with PwID and family members. Weight, height and waist circumference measurements were obtained. Participants were invited to complete a four day food diary, over two week and two weekend days. Results The mean BMI of the overall study sample was...

An examination of the relationship between participation in extra-curricular physical activity and the psychological well-being of adolescent males from disadvantaged communities
(2013)
Prior, Paul
Abstract:
Extra-curricular physical activity (ECPA) has an important role to play in post-primary schools. The main aim of this study was to examine participation levels of adolescent males (aged 12-15 years) from disadvantaged communities in ECPA and to investigate the impact on the psychological well-being of those who regularly participated. The main psychological areas to be investigated were physical self-worth, perceived physical competence and enjoyment of physical activity (PA). The study also looked to identify barriers to participation in ECPA. Data were generated using self-report questionnaires, activity monitoring devices (pedometers) and focus group discussions. A longitudinal approach was adopted for this study with data being collected at Autumn, Winter and Summer during the academic year 2008/2009. Junior cycle students (N=174, male, 12-15 years of age, mean age 13.59 + .91) from four City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee (CDVEC) schools participated in the ...

An examination of the relationship between the prevalence of multiple sclerosis and the geological environment specifically exposure to indoor radon before the age of 15 years
(2005)
Carroll, Denis
Abstract:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the Central Nervous System, with no known cause or cure. It is a progressive degenerative disease and it affects people all around the world. It is one of the most common disabling neurological conditions of young adults, affecting almost twice as many women as men. It has been diagnosed more frequently since 1970s. World epidemiological and genetic surveys indicate that MS is caused by an interplay between genetic traits and environmental influences. To date, no known environmental agent has been identified. Estimates of total number of cases in Ireland are in the region of 4000 to 6500, suggesting a prevalence rate of 100–162/100,000, however, there is no reliable national database of people with MS. This study was designed to examine the environmental milieu of people with MS, via a questionnaire distributed with MS News to over 5,000 MS News subscribers. The 671 responses received were analysed under various hea...

An experiment in cross-age tutoring in an Irish post primary school
(1987)
McDonald, John
Abstract:
A programme of cross-age tutoring was introduced into the formal curriculum of a second-level school. The aim was twofold - to increase the incidence of effective remedial help to those students experiencing difficulty in basic academic subjects, and to demonstrate the possibility of teachers devising, developing and implementing curriculum change relevant to the local needs of their individual schools. Secretarial students drawn from post-leaving certificate classes volunteered to tutor first and second year students identified as having academic difficulties mainly in the areas of mathematics and english. The study draws from a wide range of theoretical bases and stresses the importance of ecological validity both in programme development and in statistical analysis. The following programme outcomes were investigated: (1) academic gains of tutees, (2) attitudinal gains of tutees, (3) gains in self-esteem of tutors. Results indicate some academic gain, but highly significant attitu...

Abstract:
The title of this thesis is "An experiment on the introductlon of software project management techniques to industry". The objecuve of the experiment is to test the hypothesis that the incidence of project management failure within organisations can be reduced by modifying both the approach to project management training and the method employed to manage projects. At the start of this experunent, a survey of project management practice within Irish industry was carried out. A benefiual outcome from this survey was the recruitment of a test organisation to participate in the expmnent. The experiment was conducted by executcng 8 stages of a test process The results from the expement were as follows: Key Finding 1 - Project management maturity within indiginous compames appears to be low - it would be worthwhle investigating this further to establish if such project management immaturity is typical for Irish industry. Key Finding 2 - Before a software enginering experient i...

An Experimental Analysis of the Call Capacity of IEEE 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks for VoIP Telephony
(2005)
Keegan, Brian
Abstract:

The use of the Internet to make phone calls is growing in popularity as the Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) allows users to make phone calls virtually free of charge. The increased uptake of broadband services by domestic users will further increase the use of VoIP telephony. Furthermore, the emergence of low cost wireless networks (namely IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLANs) is expected to bring wireless VoIP into the mainstream. As the number of wireless hotspots increases more users will want to use VoIP calls wherever possible by connecting to open access points (AP). A major concern with VoIP is Quality of Service (QoS). In order for VoIP to be truly successful users must enjoy a similar perceived QoS as a call made over a traditional telephone network. There are many factors that influence QoS which include: throughput, packet delay, delay variation (or jitter), and packet loss. This thesis is an experimental study of the call capacity of an IEEE 802.11b network when using VoI...

An experimental design framework for evolutionary robotics
(1996)
McCartney, Robert
Abstract:
Based on the failures of work in the area of machine intelligence in the past, a new paradigm has been proposed: for a machine to develop intelligence it should be able to interact with and survive within a hostile dynamic environment. It should therefore be able to display adaptive behaviour and respond correctly to changes in its situation. This means that before higher cognitive properties can be modeled, the modeling of the lower levels of intelligence would be achieved first. Only by building on this platform of physical and mental abilities may it be possible to develop true intelligence. One train of thought for implementing this is to control and design a robot by modeling the neuroethology of simpler animals such as insects. This thesis outlines one approach to the design and development of such a robot, controlled by a neural network, by combining the work of a number of researchers in the areas of machine intelligence and artificial life. It involves Rodney Brooks’ subsu...

An Experimental Investigation of TCP Performance in High Bandwidth-Delay Product Paths.
(2007)
Even, Baruch
Abstract:
The performance of the Internet is determined not only by the network and hardware technologies that underlie it, but also by the software protocols that govern its use. In particular, the TCP transport protocol is responsible for carrying the great majority of traffic in the current internet, including web traffic, email, file transfers, music and video downloads. TCP provides two main functions. First, it provides functionality to detect and retransmit packets lost during a transfer thereby providing a reliable transport service to higher layer applications. Second, it enforces congestion control. That is, it seeks to match the rate at which packets are injected into the network to the available network capacity. A particular aim here is to avoid so-called congestion collapse, prevalent in the late 1980s prior to the inclusion of congestion control functionality in TCP. Over the last decade or so, the link speeds within networks have increased by several orders of magnitude. While...

An exploration of empowerment from the perspective of Irish nurses and midwives
(2004)
Corbally, Melissa
Abstract:
Empowerment is a complex and multifaceted construct. It is understood to be a perception of ability that can be influenced by numerous factors. Due to the subjective nature of human perception, there is a potential for empowerment to mean different things to different people. Empowerment theory is also equally diverse. Several research approaches have attempted to measure empowerment. Most of these have assumed its meaning which is problematic given the fact that empowerment is interpreted at the level of the individual. Zimmerman (1995) asserts that empowerment is contextually determined. Because nurses and midwives, practice in complex environments, it is also possible that these contexts impact on their perceptions of empowerment. This study aimed to explore perceptions of empowerment amongst ninety-three nurses and midwives. Ten focus groups were held across Ireland with representation sought from five branches of nursing and of midwifery. In total, ten themes emerged from the ...

An Exploration of Enterprise Level Partnership and the Influences Informing Private Sector Organisations Choice of this Model in the Republic of Ireland
(2006)
O'Leary, Kevin
Abstract:

The research follows the strategic choice of Partnership and seeks to gain an understanding of the processes and practices which define this concept and the political, economic and historical influences which have shaped it's evolution. The primary focus of this study is to explore the factors which have shaped the decision of private sector einployers to engage with or to reject Partnership as an appropriate model. The literature and the surveys consulted suggest that Partnership has not become an established or mainstream activity and reflects singularly low levels of uptake despite being actively promoted by Government and it's social partners. The findings suggest that Partnership is not a model of choice for employers but is often imposed by adverse circumstances, sometimes embraced opportunistically as a solution to intractable industrial relations problems and sometimes engaged in nominally without the spiritual cominitment to true Partnership values. An Exploration of Firm-customer Relationships in Retail Banking
(1998)
Clancy, Ian
Abstract:

Establishing relationships with consumers as a means of overcoming the anonymous nature of many business transactions, is not a new concept. However, its implementation as a distinct direction in marketing (Relationship Marketing), is a relatively new phenomenon. Nevertheless, its focus and direction remains unclear. Indeed, it has been argued that the proliferation of relationship marketing literature and business practice has focused largely on what the firm perceives a relationship to be, while ignoring the distinct viewpoint of end consumers. This study attempts to address this by exploring genuine relationship development from the consumer’s perspective, in retail banding. It takes an exploratory, qualitative approach, by using focus groups with consumers of relatively complex retail banking products. Consumers’ perceptions were analysed by drawing on the literature of social psychology to gain a greater understanding of the present state of consumer-bank relationships...

An Exploration of Gender Roles, Attitudes and Expectations in Nigerian Immigrant Families in Ireland
(2015)
Onyemelukwe, Maria Uchemdia
Abstract:
This project explores gender roles expectations and attitudes among first generation Nigerian men and women living in Ireland. Specifically this work examines how the process of migration influences gender roles expectations and attitudes. Through interview data, I investigate how Nigerian born men and women navigate what I suggest are a series of shifts in expectations surrounding gendered behaviour that accompanies the experience of cultural adaptation to Irish society. Previous research has established that migration and the associated experience of cultural adaptation have consequences for gender role expectations, particularly for women. Central to my project is an investigation of how the processes of migration influence gender role expectations and attitudes among first generation Nigerians in Ireland. In other words, this research is interested in learning how Nigerian men and women negotiate these shifts and the consequences of such changing gender role expectations for the...

An exploration of manager’s practices in and attitudes towards staff vetting in children’s residential centres
(2009)
Hanly, Catherine
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore the practices of centre managers in vetting staff for employment in residential child care. The study also aims to explore the attitudes of these managers towards current vetting requirements. The study examined practices and attitudes of managers of children’s residential centres within the non-statutory sector only but on a national basis. The methodology utilised in this study is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted and the data was subsequently analysed in order to develop a questionnaire. On development, sixty-nine anonymous self completion questionnaires were distributed on a national basis, following which the data collected was analysed. It can be concluded from the review of the literature and an analysis of the findings that vetting staff is a safeguarding measure for children and young people in residential care. Centre managers indicated that it is a necessary...

An exploration of structural material choice processes in Irish residential construction
(2000)
O'Neill, Maurice W
Abstract:
This study is important in terms of applying organisational buying behaviour theory to structural material choice processes in the Irish residential construction sector, at a time when as the construction industry is awakening to the benefits and necessity of marketing. Structural material choice processes are explored within a framework developed from the organisational buying behaviour literature including seminal such Robinson, Ferris and Wind (1967), Webster and Wind (1972) and Sheth (1973). The framework proposes three material choice process stages and three levels of participation. The three stages, which are not entirely sequential, are:- structural material selection, structural timber specification and structural timber supplier selection. Each of these stages is envisioned as comprising an unspecified number of related decisions. Participation in each of these stages is explored through the three participation levels:- decider, involvement, and influencer. Structural mat...

An exploration of the adaptation of the dimensions of learning framework to promote thinking skills in a 21st century adult learning environment through the development of digital media narrative. A case study
(2013)
Purcell, Vivienne
Abstract:
The worlds of education and learning in the 21st century are being shaped by rapidly changing environments of digital medias and new technologies which require new learning and communication skills. The aim of this exploratory and descriptive study is to examine and foster the 21st century thinking skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity (4Cs) through the creation of digital narrative against the backdrop of the Dimensions of Learning framework. Based on research into the cognitive process, the framework proposes that five dimensions of “thinking” (learning) are inherent in the learning process and should be considered in curriculum design, teaching and assessment: Dimension 1: Positive attitudes and perceptions about learning. Dimension 2: Thinking used to acquire and integrate knowledge. Dimension 3: Thinking used to extend and refine knowledge. Dimension 4: Thinking involved in using knowledge meaningfully. Dimension 5: Productive habits...

An exploration of the digital competences of literacy tutors and their use of digital technologies in adult literacy teaching: a case study
(2013)
Aherne, Deirdre Frances
Abstract:
The traditional definition of literacy was the ability to read and write, however, over time the meaning of literacy has evolved. It now includes being able to use everyday technologies to communicate and handle information, or “digital literacy”. In order to be able to support learners to become digitally literate, adult literacy tutors need to have digital skills themselves. This research examined the digital competences of literacy tutors, full time, part time staff and unpaid volunteers, and their use of digital technologies in their teaching, in one literacy service in the west of Ireland. The research used a case study methodology and gathered qualitative and quantitative data through a number of data collection methods including questionnaires, observations, interviews and document analysis. The study found almost unanimous agreement about the importance of being digitally competent. The respondents expressed higher confidence levels in their traditional ICT skills, email and...

An Exploration Of The Effects Of Enhanced Compiler Error Messages For Computer Programming Novices
(2015)
Becker, Brett A.
Abstract:

Computer programming is an essential skill that all computing students must master and is increasingly important in many diverse disciplines. It is also difficult to learn. One of the many challenges novice programmers face from the start are notoriously cryptic compiler error messages. These report details on errors made by students and are essential as the primary source of information used to rectify those errors. However these difficult to understand messages are often a barrier to progress and a source of discouragement. A high number of student errors, and in particular a high frequency of repeated errors – when a student makes the same error consecutively – have been shown to be indicators of students who are struggling with learning to program. This instrumental case study research investigates the student experience with, and the effects of, software that has been specifically written to help students overcome their challenges with compiler error messages. This sof...

An exploration of the factors that influence male post-primary students in making their subject choices for the leaving certificate.
(2017)
Maher, Aiden
Abstract:
As students progress through their post-primary education in Ireland they have many choices to make in relation to the Leaving Certificate programme they wish to study for and the subjects they wish to take as part of their chosen programme (Smyth 2016). These choices have long term consequences far beyond the immediate in terms of the student’s career (Warton and Cooney 1997). The overall aim of this research study was to explore the factors that influence male post-primary students in making their subject choices for the Leaving Certificate Established (LCE). Another aim of this study was to identify recommendations that could inform the design, delivery and supports provided as part of the subject choice process for Senior Cycle students in post-primary schools in the future. This research study is underpinned by a positivist paradigm which focuses on the researcher taking a detached and objective position with a view to producing findings generalisable and representative of the ...
