3P-AAA framework for UCWW.
(2011)
Tairov, Dmitry
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new approach to the management of the Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) function that forms a core part of many service provider networks. The principle idea outlined is to move this function under the supervision of the trusted third parties and independent of the access network providers. This change would provide for additional flexibility through enabling users to switch their network providers depending on their current needs and the required quality of service levels. The key issue addressed in this thesis is the development of the signaling framework for the third-party AAA, which is an integral entity of the Ubiquitous Consumer Wireless World (UCWW) [1, 2] project. A review of the currently existing business models and technologies is performed in the introducing chapters of the thesis. The key issue here is to investigate what currently existing technologies and protocols could be used to provide the base f...

A 17th century “real estate company“ : The 1649 officers and the Irish land settlements, 1641-1631.
(1989)
McKenny, Kevin
Abstract:
This study is going to trace the fortune of one clearly identifiable group through that cauldron of Irish history known as the Cromwellian and Restoration land settlements. The group in question are the 1849 officers who, as will be seen in Chapters four and five, were especially pro ? settlement and explanation. This particular study is the first of its kind in that, not only is it going to correctly identify these 1649 officers, but it will also trace the exact methods by which they received satisfaction for the arrears of army pay they had incurred fighting for the royalist cause during the 1641-52 war. There is a definate need for such an identification because to date many historians have incorrectly ascribed the title of 1649 (or '49) officer to all those officers who served in Ireland, on either the king's or parliamentarian side, prior to 5 June 1649. As this study will shortly show, this rather loose ascription of the '49 officer title to all those who served...

A 1m normal incidence multi-channel spectrometer for laser plasma spectroscopy
(1995)
Doyle, Barry
Abstract:
The development of a Vacuum-UV (VUV) multichannel recording spectrometer for laser plasma spectroscopy is described. The instrument covers the spectral region 30 - 325nm and complements an existing Extreme-UV (EUV) system covering the 5 - 50nm range. It is based on an Acton Research Corporation (ARC) VM-521 lm normal incidence vacuum spectrometer fitted with a 1024 element VUV linear array detector. The array detector comprises of a Galileo VUV-25R Channel Electron Multiplier Array (CEMA), butt-coupled to an EG&G Optical Multi-channel Analyser (OMA) system. The complete set-up was tested using spectra from laser produced plasmas of polyethylene Selected spectral lines were chosen to illustrate the system performance with respect to resolution, signal to noise ratio etc and compared with both computed and manufacturer stated performance. Potential resolution enhancement using deconvolution procedures is illustrated by preliminary results. This thesis concludes with a brief des...

A Biochemical Study of Atlantic Salmon (salmo salar) Skin Mucus Proteins during Smoltification (1999 and 2001)
(2004)
Kennedy, Paul
Abstract:
<p>Smoltification is a complex process which involves morphological, physiological and behavioural changes which allow Atlantic salmon to migrate from fresh water to seawater. The biological interface between the salmon and their environment is the mucus coat, which is composed of a wide variety of biochemical secretions primarily from goblet cells on the surface of the epithelial layers, but also other cells such as sacciform cells and acidophilic granular cells. Skin mucus has been implicated in a diversity of roles including respiration, osmoregulation, reproduction, excretion, disease resistance, communication, feeding and protection ( Shepard, 1994). Further investigation is warranted with regard to the role of the mucus proteins in smoltification. This study is part of an ongoing investigation into the role of mucus proteins during smoltification using electrophoresis (1-D and 2-D). Mucus samples were taken from Atlantic salmon at the salmon management service. The sampl...

A Biochemical Study of Mucus Lysomzyme, Proteins and Plasma Thyroxine of Atlanctic Salmon (salmo salar) during Smoltification
(2004)
Fagan, Maresa
Abstract:
<p>Atlantic salmon prepare to migrate from fresh water to sea water during a phase of great physiological change known as smoltification. In the context of stock enhancement programmes and the conservation of Atlantic salmon stocks, the release of smolts from freshwater to sea is of major significance. Accordingly, this study set out to monitor some of the physiological and biochemical changes, which allow the Atlantic salmon to migrate from freshwater to seawater. Our research focused on skin mucus as a possible candidate for the development of a non invasive test and sought to elucidate biochemical or significant protein changes in mucus during parr-smolt transformation. Mucus and blood were sampled from hatchery reared Atlantic salmon during smoltification in 1996 and 1997 to investigate changes in mucus proteins and enzymes and to monitor plasma thyroxine. Mucus protein analysis for both years was carried out by SDS-PAGE. The mucus protein profiles for individual fish with...

A blended learning teaching approach aimed at improving post-primary students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics – a focus on algebra supported by digital pencasts
(2016)
Gallagher, Jason
Abstract:
This research project investigated whether students’ conceptual understanding of algebra was improved with a taught intervention supported by digital pencasts. The motivation for this project was inspired by observing students’ difficulties when learning algebra in the author’s own classroom. Digital pencasts were used as a support tool throughout this investigation. Digital pencasting is the process of viewing web-based hand written notes with accompanying audio. The teaching intervention focused on the elements of Niemi’s (1996) framework for measuring conceptual understanding within the two separate groups; an adult education group and a transition year group. A statistically significant improvement was observed in the transition years’ conceptual understanding of algebra whereas there was no statistically significant improvement observable in the adult education group. The completion of this project unveiled the dearth of research currently available on digital pencasting. This...

A case study approach to the language status, motivation and attitude in both an immersion and non-immersion setting at Primary Level in Ireland.
(2016)
Abstract:
This project is titled; A Case Study Approach to the Language Status, Motivation and Attitude in both an Immersion and Non-immersion Setting at Primary Level Ireland, and it sets out to explore and examine the status of language, the motivational factors and attitude towards language at primary level, focusing on foreign languages (in this case, French) and Irish. Second languages, mainly Irish and French are the major focus point in the schools in this study and how the schools continued to teach French after the abolishment of the MLPSI. As these areas are so intertwined the three different aspects provide an overview of the language situation within these schools. Two schools were involved in this study, one English-medium school and the other an immersion setting, in the context of a Gaelscoil (Irish-medium school). Pupils and teachers from both settings were interviewed, and another former MLPSI teacher also took part in this study.

A case study exploring the perceptions of regular counselling in a mid west post-primary school
(2012)
Galvin, James
Abstract:
The overall aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of regular teachers of a whole school approach (WSA) to guidance counselling in a mid west post-primary school. The study focuses on the critical discourse developing in the area of guidance counselling provision as a result of the policy decisions in Budget 2012. Whilst a similar study was completed from an eastern perspective by Hui (2002) and Lam and Hui (20 I0). this study addresses a gap in research on the perceptions of regular teachers of a WSA to guidance counselling from a western perspective. This case study used a mixed method approach with two phases of data collection. Phase I consisted of 30 self reporting online SurveyMonkey questionnaires and Phase 2 collected narratives through interpretive interviews with six regular teachers who volunteered in the survey. The main themes that emerged in the findings related to the: delivery of a holistic education experience: the pastoral care role of regular teachers in...

A case study exploring the transition from primary to post-primary school from the perspective of parents and the implications for the guidance counselling profession
(2017)
Ahern, Rosemary
Abstract:
The main aim of this research is to conduct a case study exploring the transition from primary to post-primary school from the perspective of first year parents. The research also aims to establish what support guidance counsellors, teachers and parents provide to assist first years during this process. Additionally, the researcher will explore what strategies could be adopted to support future first year students from a whole school approach to guidance counselling. From an international perspective, a vast amount of research exists regarding school transition and transitional support structures (Mackenzie et al., 2012; Rice et al., 2015; Riglin et al., 2013; Topping, 2011). The main body of research on school transition from an Irish perspective was conducted by Smyth et al., (2004). This case study research provides an insight into the experiences of current first year students and explores what supports can be implemented for future students. This research study was centred on a...

Abstract:
This case study examines the nature of Internet use by students and teachers in a post primary school and attempts to determine to what extent students’ online activities reflect unsafe practices and patterns. It investigates how much students and teachers know about Internet safety and establishes from what source students have received information on safe Internet use to date. Finally, it investigates whether the study school is following recommended guidelineson Internet safety strategies. Research involved a mixed methodology approach. A variety of sources were used to gather information thus ensuring the notion of triangulation. Teaching staff and students from the study school were surveyed, semi structured interviews with management and teaching staff were conducted, comments made from teachers concerning students’ safe Internet use were noted and relevant ICT documentation was reviewed. The study identified that students and teachers are using the Internet both at home and i...

A Case Study of Student Engagement in Collaborative Group Learning in a Blended Community Based (Service) Learning Module
(2009)
McGarrigle, John G.
Abstract:
<p>Abstract: A participatory action research case study employed mixed methods to examine student collaboration and engagement in a Community Based (Service) learning module. A quasi experimental testing of Coates (2007) typology of student engagement found low agreement between students and lecturers in assigning the terms, passive, intense, independent or collaborative to student postings to discussion fora. Evidence from this case study found greater student collaboration in discussion fora when linked to practical course activity. Qualitative analysis of discussion threads using conversation analysis provided evidence for collaboration in deeper knowledge construction when supported by lecturers’ contributions. Discourse analysis examined interviews with students and focused on their constructions of community revealing the beneficial role of developing multiple perspectives to integrate their learning experiences. A role for supporting facilitative communication in small ...

A case study of the Dublin and Galway Rape Crisis Centres: the therapists perspective
(1997)
Ryan-Larragy, Elizabeth
Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical development and current therapeutic practices of two of Ireland’s feminist-inspired rape crisis centres (Dublin and Galway). The focus is on the perspective of workers in these centres, whether as volunteers or paid employees. A number of spokes persons and workers in each centre were interviewed over a 15 month period. These interviews form the bulk of the primary data and are used throughout. Interviewees were questioned on a range of policies operating at the centres: recruitment, selection, training and legal issues. Although at the outset the case study was not designed to allow comparisons to be drawn between the two centres concerned, major differences in policy and approach between the Dublin and Galway Rape Crisis Centres lead to inevitable comparison. Indeed, these differences inspired many of the conclusions of the study. Where as one centre continues to operate according to the feminist analysis which first inspired rape crisis cent...

A case study of the televised international newsflow of Raidió Teilifís Éireann and The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: A comparative content analysis
(2012)
Testar, Jason Thomas
Abstract:
The objective of this comparative newsflow study was to analyse the televised international news broadcast in the national public service of Canada and the Republic of Ireland over a thirty-day term. In doing so, a quantitative content analysis comparing the output of two national public service providers (PSB), Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is offered. In identifying the national origin of the international news, those reports utilizing the foreign correspondents of the PSBs were quantified. Finally, the ratio of international to domestic reportage and the volume of international news reports by quantity and duration are also compared. This study reviews the literature of cultural, corporate and state sovereignty as it looks to the regulatory structures of the broadcasters. Gatekeeping dynamics and the critical media ecology of a re-feudalizing public sphere are addressed as are the roles of framing and domestication. An exploration ...

A case study: the effectiveness of social media and online resources in the teaching of junior science
(2013)
Doherty, Michael
Abstract:
The purpose of this research, in the form of a case study, is to attempt to utilize both social media and online materials in order to motivate student learning and reduce dependency on the teacher-led model of teaching and learning which is still prevalent in schools. The setting will be that of a second level rural school in North West Ireland and the context will be that of a junior cycle student cohort being taught sections of the current junior certificate science curriculum through social media and online methods in addition to the traditional teaching methods of ‘chalk and blackboard’. By comparing these two modes of course delivery, an insight will be gained into the effectiveness of incorporating social media and online methods into the classroom. Questionnaires were used first of all gain a brief insight into the online activities of teenage students, their parents and the school staff. The subsequent practical element of the study then involved splitting the junior cycle ...

A code excited linear predictive coder: using a moments algorithm
(1993)
Meehan, David
Abstract:
A speech coding algorithm was developed which was based on a new method of selecting the excitation signal from a codebook of residual error sequences. The residual error sequences in the codebook were generated from 512 frames of real speech signals. L.P.C. inverse filtering was used to obtain the residual signal. Each residual error signal was assigned an index. The index was generated using a moments algorithm. These indices were stored on a Graded Binary Tree. A Binary Search was then used to select the correct index. The use of a Graded Binary Tree in the coding algorithm reduced the search time. The algorithm faithfully reproduced the original speech when the test residual error signal was chosen from the training data. When the test residual error signal was outside the training data, synthetic speech of a recognisable quality was produced. Finally, the fundamentals of speech coders are discussed in detail and various developments are suggested.

Abstract:
The issue of whether the Irish banking system compares favourably or more adversely with other banking systems in the provision of finance to small businesses and in particular enterprises with a riskier profile such as those with higher volumes of current or intellectual assets to fixed assets has been addressed by several authors to date. Foley and Griffith, 1993. Kinsella ,1992 (Culliton Report). Deloitte and Touche, 1994. Bannock and Albach, 1991 (Germany). Burns and Clements, 1992 (UK). Bank specific studies such as the above are complemented by studies which examine the performance of entrepreneurs and where the issue of banking comprises an ancillary issue rather than main focal point. Carpenter, 1993. Kinsella, Clarke, Storey, Mulveanny and Coyne, 1994. Cosh and Hughes, 1994 (UK). SBRC, 1992 (UK). Hogan, 1995. Kenny, 1994. Aston Business School, 1991. Nolan, Rachel
Abstract:
<p>This study is a comparative analysis of the provision for instrumental teaching in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Denmark. It attempts to redress the lack of research on this subject in the Republic of Ireland by examining European systems of music education and comparing the results with instrumental teaching provision in the Republic of Ireland.</p> <p>Chapter 1 comprises an overview of music education in the Republic of Ireland today. It consists of an examination of the value of music education and the value of music performance. Its significance in the Irish education system is gauged by a survey of music in primary and post-primary schools, and an assessment of levels of participation in the post-primary music examinations. Its economic significance as part of the cultural industries and its social significance as a leisure activity is also addressed. Chapter 1 also contains a brief summary of recent educational research in Great B...

A comparative analysis of sustainable tourism, planning and development between Sligo and Donegal County Councils
(2004)
McNelis, Janice
Abstract:
Sustainable Development requires appropriate and continuous planning and management of economic, socio cultural and environmental resources. Tourism planning calls for continuous collaboration among tourism agencies, local authorities and local communities for success of the industry. While evidence suggests that tourism planning has been extensively documented, it is apparent that Donegal and Sligo County Councils have, in some cases failed to adequately address the significance of planning of the tourism industry for the North West of Ireland. This was investigated through interviews with chief planners of Donegal and Sligo county councils and was conducted in conjunction with the analysis of county development plans; which were formulated by both organisations involved in this study. Evidence suggests that although tourism is extensively documented by Donegal and Sligo county councils, neither of the two local authorities have developed implementation strategies to facilitate the...

A comparative examination of the efficacy of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and conventional interventions as helping techniques in adult guidance counselling
(2014)
Fallon, Imelda
Abstract:
The overall aim of this study was to compare the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) interventions and the conventional forms of guidance interventions in adult guidance counselling practice. To facilitate a response to the main research questions, it was essential to gain an understanding of the unique experiences and the effectiveness of such interventions for clients. A specific focus of the research was to examine the lasting effect of the outcomes and the benefits from engaging in a helping intervention. A tactical approach to helping which is reflective of new organisational work structures is fundamental to effective guidance (Bimrose, 2010). The research also considered the factors related to why people engage in adult education and the consequential benefits for the adult learner. An interpretivist paradigm was employed using a case study approach which concentrated on the subjective experiences of four clients of one Adult Educational Guidance Initiative (AEGI) servi...

A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment for Utilising Laminated Veneer Bamboo as a Primary Structural Material in High-Rise Residential Buildings
(2016)
Kavanagh, Philip
Abstract:
<p>In a time when construction is ranked as one of the world’s least sustainable industries consuming about half of the world’s non-renewable resources (Hinson, 2012), it is important to develop and advance the methods and means by which we select and use building materials and how we design, engineer and construct our architecture. This research aimed to evaluate a method for utilising laminated veneer bamboo (LVB) as a primary structural material in high-rise residential buildings and evaluate the environmental potential of LVB through a comparative life cycle analysis (LCA). The process of life cycle analysis was completed through the development of a Revit® model and utilising the Tally® life cycle assessment application. A comparative LCA, in particular the global warming potential between laminated veneer bamboo and cross laminated timber, was conducted using a case study model of Stadthaus, Murray Grove, London.
