A Comparative Study of Performance Management Practice in the Republic of Ireland, as Influenced by it's Expansion from the Private Sector to its Public Equivalent.
(2016)
Corbett, Kevin Paul
Abstract:
<p>This is a study of performance management (PM) that examines its comparative practice in the Republic of Ireland, as influenced by its expansion from the private sector to the public equivalent. The research objectives of this study are to establish the level of incidence of PM practice in both sectors, to consider how PM is practised, including the mechanisms employed, to determine the objectives of the PM processes for these organisations and to ascertain the comparative perceived impact and effectiveness of PM. It was established that there was a gap of nine years since the last quantitative analysis of the subject matter in Ireland had been conducted. A random sample based on five strata was deployed for the purpose of the primary research. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed nationwide in 2007/08 to 499 organisations, yielding a 41% (n=204) useable response rate. The findings confirm a high level of PM practice in Ireland, particularly in the public secto...

A comparative study of pre/post condition and relational approaches to program development
(2004)
Hong, Duan
Abstract:
With so many software-related failures happening these days, there is an increasing demand for software quality. Rigorous development approaches, which apply mathematical techniques to the design and implementation, should be getting more consideration as one of the solutions to software reliability. Pre/postcondition approaches and relational approaches are two groups of influential rigorous techniques. Both of them use classical mathematical concepts to describe and simplify programming objects. To further propel the application of these approaches, their relative strengths and limitations in terms of practicability and accessibility need to be identified and elaborated. In this thesis, we conduct a comparative study between the pre/postcondition approaches, proposed by Floyd, Hoare, Dijkstra and Baber, and the relational approaches, proposed by Mills and Parnas. We investigate aspects related to their mathematical models. Their abilities of specifying different termination behavi...

A comparative study of the physical, chemical and microbiological status of soils, as influenced by conventional and reduced tillage
(2004)
Gilligan, Jean
Abstract:
Historically, shifts to reduced and no-tillage management for production of crops were fostered by needs to decrease soil erosion and loss of organic matter, reduce fuel and labour costs and conserve soil water, as compared with conventional fallow tillage management. Recent interest in maintaining soil quality has been stimulated by a renewed awareness of the importance of soil condition to both the sustainability of agricultural production systems and environmental quality (Doran and Parkin, 1996). The aim of this project was to determine the impact on the physical, chemical and microbiological status of the soil of conventional and reduced tillage. It has been suggested that the reduced soil disturbance associated with the tine cultivator improves soil structure, increases nutrient content in the top 10cm of soil, increases microbial activity and improves physical characteristics. From this study it was determined that the environmental benefits linked to reduced tillage in li...

A comparison of diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of equine influenza virus infections
(2013)
Galvin, Pamela
Abstract:
The rapid diagnosis of Equine Influenza (EI) is critical to the implementation of control measures. In this study, two rapid antigen detection (RAD) kits and three ELISA kits were evaluated as diagnostic aids in the detection of EI. The Directigen Flu A, Espline Influenza A&B-N and the ID Screen Influenza A Antigen Capture ELISA were compared to the traditional ‘gold standard’ diagnostic tests, virus isolation (VI) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). A total of 75 nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from horses on premises where natural outbreaks had occurred, and a total of 104 swabs were collected from experimentally challenged foals and tested by all five methods. RT-PCR was the most sensitive diagnostic technique. Directigen Flu A was the most sensitive kit in both sample groups detecting 46.95% positive in comparison to 16.18% (Espline Influenza A&B-N) and 16.96% (ID Screen Influenza A Antigen Capture ELISA). The superiority of Directigen Flu A...

A comparison of environmental licensing systems in operation in the wood panel manufacturing industry in the Northern Hemisphere
(2001)
Nairn, Joyce
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to compare and contrast environmental licensing systems, for the wood panel industry, in a number of countries in order to determine which system is the best from an environmental and economic point of view. The thesis also examines the impact which government can have on industry and the type of licensing system in operation in a country. Initially, the thesis investigates the origins of the various environmental licensing systems which are in operation in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, USA and Canada. It then examines the Environmental Agencies which control and supervise industry in these countries. The impact which the type of government (i.e. unitary or federal) in charge in any particular country has on industry and the Regulatory Agency in that country is then described. Most of the mills in the thesis make a product called OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and the manufacturing process is briefly described in order to understand where the various...

A comparison of physical activity, physical fitness levels, BMI, and blood pressure of adults with intellectual disability, who do and do not take part in Special Olympics Ireland programmes.
(2016)
Walsh, Denise
Abstract:
Background: It has been reported in the literature that people with an intellectual disability (ID) are less physically active, live more sedentary lives, have lower fitness levels and are more likely to be overweight or obese than the general population. Nine thousand people with ID are participating in Special Olympics Ireland (SOI). To date, no evidence exists on the impact of SOI participation on physical activity (PA) and physical fitness levels of adults with ID’s in Ireland. Methods: Adults with ID (16-64 years) were recruited from 4 ID services and SOI clubs throughout Ireland (n=146, male 85, female 61). Both SOI participants and non SOI participants were invited to participate. Physical measures included waist circumference, height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate and the Six Minute Walking Test. Self-report questionnaires were administered to study participants to gather data on PA levels. To get an objective measure of PA, participants were asked to wear an Actigrap...

Abstract:
<p>Given the advances in technology the field of social network analysis has very much hit the forefront in recent years. The information age harnesses the use of social network analysis for multiple industries and for solving complex problems. Social network analysis is an important tool in the world of the military and counter intelligence, whether it’s the capture of Osama Bin Laden or uncovering hidden Al Qaeda terrorist networks, the world around us is built on networks, be that hidden or otherwise. Online social networks give new information in the world of intelligence agencies similarly online financial communities such as Yahoo Finance gives intelligent information to knowledge hungry investors. This thesis is concerned with the exploration and exploitation of online financial community dynamics and networks using social network analysis (SNA) as a mechanism. Social network analysis measurement techniques will be applied to understand the reaction of online investors ...

A comprehensive study of robot control algorithms
(1991)
Gibbs, Patrick J
Abstract:
The PUMA 560 Industrial Manipulator is presently controlled using a PID control strategy Robot manipulators are highly coupled, nonlinear mechanical systems designed to perform specific tasks. It is the function of any control algorithm to compute the input voltages or torques needed to follow a desired trajectory. The PID controller is detuned, so as to cater for variations in system behaviour. Thus, the performance of such a control algorithm is poor over the entire operating range of the robot and the need for more complex control strategies is clear. The research presented m this thesis derives a third order comprehensive dynamic model for the three primary robot joints, using the Euler-Lagrange formulation for the equations of motion. A simulation package is designed to model this dynamic system. Next, a wide range of different techniques are investigated in a simulation environment, to observe their performance on the computer model. These control algorithms range from Fixed ...

A computational and experimental analysis of impact to aircraft structures
(2005)
Kennedy, Pierce
Abstract:
The modelling and analysis of high energy impact on aircraft structures is highly complex. Traditional methods give only a limited understanding of what occurs and it is evident from the continuing problem of uncontained engine failure and other debris impact that a more accurate way of predicting the results of such impacts is needed. Finite element techniques can provide that solution. This work attempts to model accurately impacts to existing aircraft structures. Of particular interest is the behaviour at the ballistic velocity as this is where the problem is most difficult to predict. Initially the model consisted of a simple sheet subject to impact by a cylindrical projectile. This was used to develop the modelling techniques for the more complex model. Issues that arose included the mesh density, the material model and the penalty stiffness factor used. Experimental testing was carried out using a gas fired projectile launcher to validate the finite element model. The geometr...

Abstract:
Making parallel systems easy to use, and parallel programs easy to write and run, are two major aims for parallel systems designers. This work describes an automatic configurer which attempts to lessen the effort a user should put to configure and run a parallel program on a network of parallel processors. The configurer configures the program, as required by the operating system and produces the configured source of the program. The network is also configured by the configurer to meet the communication requirements of the configured program

Creed, Mairead
Abstract:
This thesis adopts the theoretical framework of contrastive textology (CT) developed by Hartmann (1980) for the analysis of the language of French and English expository texts from the domain of social statistics CT results from a combination of two linguistic orientations text linguistics and contrastive stylistics (CS). Hartmann uses the term parallel texts to describe (a) translated texts and (b) non-translated texts in two languages which were produced in circumstances so similar as to produce comparable linguistic features. Although translation techniques and text-linguistic norms can more readily be observed and compared in translated texts, non-translated texts have two advantages they allow us to observe text-linguistic features in the two languages prior to any translation activity, and they reflect no influences of a source text. The aims of the thesis were threefold firstly to provide a descriptive inventory of some of the most important linguistic features of social s...

A cross sectional survey of constipation prevalence and laxative use among older adults residing in a nursing home setting in Ireland.
(2014)
Neacy, Olivia
Abstract:
<p><strong>Background: </strong>Constipation is a common, distressing and troublesome condition and whilst it may affect any one of any age, it is said to be one of the most common complaints among the older person population. Indeed, prevalence rates within this population are high as 74%.In the older person population disturbed bowel function is often associated with depression, immobility and isolation. The costs of this condition are high, not only for the individual sufferer, but for society as a whole. Whilst laxatives are said to be the most frequently prescribed drugs in long term care settings, the costs of these treatments have not been systematically reported. From an Irish perspective, there appears to be a significant gap in the evidence based literature in relation to this condition.</p> <p><strong>Aim of Research: </strong>The aims of this research were to: determine the prevalence of constipation in an Irish nursing home popu...

A cross-cultural study of humour in magazine advertising
(1993)
Browne, Deirdre
Abstract:
This thesis looks at the fascinating issue of cross-cultural differences in the perception and portrayal of humour in magazine advertisements, with specific reference to Ireland, Germany and Austria. The primary objective of this research is to investigate whether the way people perceive humour in advertising is conditioned by culture and/or gender. The secondary objective is to analyse the portrayal of humour in specific current magazine advertisements. It is hoped that the research will be of value for academics and practitioners in the cultures under investigation and will form the basis of further research in this field. By way of introduction, the thesis attempts to define the concept of humour and discusses three of the most popular theories of humour. This is followed by a review of the existing literature and studies on humour m advertising which, on the whole, have concentrated on the effectiveness of humour and have yielded far from consistent results. This overall review...

A descriptive study of the factors that impact upon occupational performance and engagement for people living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus in the Mid-West of Ireland
(2016)
Carroll, Elaine
Abstract:
Background: Ireland has one of the highest prevalence of spina bifida (SB) worldwide. Between 2000 and 2012 there were 664 documented cases of SB, or a form of neural tube defect, per 10,000 live births, in the registries of Cork and Kerry, Dublin, Galway and the South East of Ireland. Furthermore, in the same time frame, and within the same registries, 113 cases of hydrocephalus were reported per 10,000 live births (EUROCAT, 2012). Objectives: This study investigated the factors that impact occupational performance and engagement among people with SB and/or hydrocephalus, living in the Mid-West of Ireland. Methods: Quantitative research was used. Data collected by the Health Research Board, by means of questionnaires with 77 people with SB and/or hydrocephalus living in the Mid-West of Ireland, informed this research project. Results: The main factors that impacted upon occupational performance and engagement among participants in the Mid-West of Ireland were: 1) restrictions in bo...

A differentiated Services Architecture for Quality of Service Provisioning in Wireless Local Area Networks
(2004)
Raimondi, Tristan
Abstract:
<p>Currently the issue of Quality of Service (QoS) is a major problem in IP networks due to the growth in multimedia traffic (e.g. voice and video applications) and therefore many mechanisms like IntServ, DiffServ, etc. have been proposed. Since the IEEE 802.11b (or Wi-Fi) standard was approved in 1999, it has gained in popularity to become the leading Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology with millions of such networks deployed worldwide. Wireless networks have a limited capacity (11 Mbits/s in the case of Wi-Fi networks) owing to the limited amount of frequency spectrum available. At any given time there may be a large number of users contending for access which results in the bandwidth available to each user being severely limited. Moreover, the system does not differentiate between traffic types which means that all traffic, regardless of its importance or priority, experiences the same QoS. An important network application requiring QoS guarantees is the provision...

A Dirichlet problem for a coupled system of two singularly perturbed convection-diffusion ordinary differential equations
(2003)
Bellew, Seamus
Abstract:
A Dirichlet problem for a system of two singularly perturbed convection-diffusion ordinary differential equations is examined where th e two singular perturbation parameters can be of a different order. A finite difference numerical method whose solutions converge pointwise independently of the singular perturbation parameters is constructed. A full theoretical analysis is provided which shows that the numerical method is robust. This is done over a piecewise uniform fitted mesh involving two transition points. The first differential equation has only one dependent variable while the second equation has two dependent variables. The solution to the first differential equation is present in the second differential equation and th is introduces coupling which is examined in this thesis. The solution of the first differential equation is decomposed into regular and singular components. The numerical solution is decomposed in an analogous manner. The convergence of the numerical method...

A discourse analysis of interactions from an online pro-anorexia forum
(2013)
Ascari, Manuela
Abstract:
My research takes a look at the phenomenon of pro-anorexia websites by focusing on conversations from a public pro-anorexia forum. There is pressure on health experts and Internet hosts to oppose this controversial phenomenon because of the concern, shared by experts and lay people alike, that these websites encourage eating disorders and provide a dysfunctional, anti-recovery type of social support to those who are struggling with this problem. However, to conceive of these online spaces as yet another manifestation of a psychopathology is to overshadow the socio-cultural context in which the phenomenon has emerged, which includes: the silencing of the experiences of eating disordered individuals and their stigmatization as irrational or mentally disturbed; the dynamics of socialization and community-building in an increasingly online world; and, crucially, the fact that, in Western societies, a concern with dieting and thinness is not exclusive to women with an eating disorder, bu...

A DSL for defining instance templates for the ASMIG system
(2014)
Kovalov, Andrii
Abstract:
The area of our work is test data generation via automatic instantiation of software models. Model instantiation or model finding is a process of finding instances of software models. For example, if a model is represented as a UML class diagram, the instances of this model are UML object diagrams. Model instantiation has several applications: finding solutions to problems expressed as models, model testing and test data generation. There are systems that automatically generate model instances, one of them is ASMIG (A Small Metamodel Instance Generator). This system is focused on a `problem solving' use case. The motivation of our work is to adapt ASMIG system for use as a test data generator and make the instance generation process more transparent for the user. In order to achieve this we provided a way for the user to interact with ASMIG internal data structure, the instance template graph via a specially designed graph definition domain-specific language. As a result, the u...

A Facile spin-cast route for cation exchange of multilayer perpendicularly-aligned nanorod assemblies for solar cell applications
(2012)
Kelly, Dervla
Abstract:
This master’s thesis outlines the novel spin exchange process which was developed to create centimetre scale nanorod assemblies of copper and silver chalcogenides. These assemblies originated by synthesising CdS and CdSe nanorods and vertically aligning them using electrophoretic deposition or self-assembly. A relatively recent method of exchanging cations within individual nanorods known as cation exchange was applied. This happens at accelerated reaction times of <1s and the strength of the anion sublattice keeps the rod shape intact throughout. Our original approach produces superlattice assemblies in rapid speeds while eliminating toxic cadmium and shows that large assemblies can also remain unharmed. Another unique aspect of spin exchange is the ability to control the depth of the exchange through the layer or layers of nanorods potentially creating a p-n sandwich on a substrate. The resulting assemblies were characterised by TEM, SEM, XRD, EDX and XPS.

A fibre optic oxygen sensor based on the fluorescence quenching of ruthenium compounds
(1991)
Geissel, Adrian Kieran
Abstract:
Oxygen quenching of long lifetime fluorescent dyes takes place when the excited state of the fluorescent dye decays non-radiatively to the ground state by energy transfer to the oxygen. Thus, by monitoring the intensity of fluorescence, the oxygen dependence is seen as a decrease in intensity for an increase in oxygen concentration. The Ruthenium based fluorescent dyes used m this work have lifetimes of the order of 0 7ms which allows them to be oxygen sensitive, and two ^ I i I such dyes, Ru (bpy)3 and Ru (phen)3 , were extensively tested for use in a fibre optic oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensitive dyes were incorporated into a fibre optic system which was used to transmit the 488nm light from an Ar ion laser to the sensor tip and also to carry the fluorescence signal back to the detector. The fibres from a 4 - port coupler were used m this sensor as follows 1) for the launching of excitation hght, 2) for housing the sensmg probe tip, 3) for the return of fluorescence signal to th...

A finite element approach for the implementation of magnetostrictive material terfenol-D in automotive CNG fuel injection actuation
(2008)
Choadhury, Habibullah Amin
Abstract:
Magnetostriction is the deformation that spontaneously occurs in ferromagnetic materials when an external magnetic field is applied. In applications broadly defined for actuation, magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D possesses intrinsic rapid response times while providing small and accurate displacements and high-energy efficiency, which are some of the essential parameters required for fast control of fuel injector valves for decreased engine emissions and lower fuel consumption compared with the traditional solenoid fuel injection system. A prototype CNG fuel injector assembly was designed, which primarily included magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D as the actuator material, 1020 Steel having soft magnetic properties as the injector housing material, AWG copper wire as the coil material and 316 Stainless Steel having non-magnetic properties as the plunger material. A 2D cross-sectional geometry including the injector housing, coil, Terfenol-D shaft, and plunger, was modeled in ...

A Fortran Parsing Tool to Extract Parallelising Information
(2002)
Nicolau, Miguel
Abstract:
This work describes the development of a Fortran parsing tool, which extracts parallelising information from legacy code. This tool will be used as a front-end parser for an evolutionary algorithm, which evolves sequences of parallel transformations to apply to serial code. As only data dependencies are considered in this process, the parsing tool is required to encapsulate flow dependencies in that information, in a transparent manner, to prevent the evolution of transformations that change the semantic meaning of the original serial code. The techniques employed to handle this constraint, as well as other techniques required for the correct extraction of data dependencies, are described in this work, as well as the choices and practical details to consider when building a new parsing tool.

A foucauldian discourse analysis of intellectual disability in Irish education

Abstract:
Since the birth of the Irish State there has been three official terms for children with mental disabilities, ‘mental deficiency’, ‘mental handicap’ and ‘intellectual disability’. Each new term replaced the previous one; ‘mental deficiency’ became ‘mental handicap’, subsequently ‘mental handicap’ became ‘intellectual disability’. This thesis applied a Foucauldian Discourse analysis to the history of Irish Education to expose the hidden conditions that underpinned the aforementioned concepts, in order to answer the following questions: What factors brought a particular conceptual configuration in the classification of intellectual disability into play in the first instance? What made that configuration seem plausible and socially desirable? What changes or events happened that caused the conceptual configuration to be replaced? And did these changes cultivate marginalisation or demarginalisation? The first part of the analysis divided the history of Irish education into three diff...
