A framework for high availability and optimum system performance in an Application Service Provider (ASP) environment
(2006)
Kirrane, Kenneth
Abstract:
The Application Service Provision (ASP) model offers access to centrally managed and hosted applications, via the Internet, on a subscription / rental basis. From its inception in the late 1990s, many have heralded the ASP delivery model as the new wave of IT outsourcing. Initially however, uptake of the ASP paradigm failed to match the hype, due in no small part to the de-valuation of dot.com share prices in early 2000, which caused the closure of numerous on-line service providers, and which eroded the confidence of many with regard to renting application access. However uptake of the ASP model is steadily increasing (recent estimates indicate spending on software-as-a service should reach $15.2 billion by 2007) and the emergence of hosted applications from key industry players indicate that the delivery of software-as-a-service may become an increasing feature of software product releases. Presented herein, is a framework, including the architecture and system configuration requi...

A Framework for Processing Viewer-based Directional Queries in a Simulated Mobile Environment
(2004)
Gardiner, Keith
Abstract:
<p>With the steady and fast advancements in the integration of geographic information systems and mobile location-based services, interest in exploiting this technology for Cultural Heritage (CH) data sharing has become apparent. In this area there has been an increasing need to integrate positional information with non-positional data and add a spatial dimension to the definition of a users “context” In this research the integration of Cultural Heritage information coupled with spatial technologies is investigated. The idea is based on a 3-tier architecture that positions the user at the client layer with a mobile device, a spatial query processor in the middle layer and a Cultural Heritage dataset layer. This novel idea applied in this context is the basis for this study. The research aims to develop a framework that enables the simulation of a mobile environment in which spatial applications can be implemented and evaluated without the current restriction of mobile bandwidt...

A Framework for the Analysis and User-Driven Evaluation of Trust on the Semantic Web
(2014)
Clarke, Peter
Abstract:
<p>This project will examine the area of trust on the Semantic Web and develop a framework for publishing and verifying trusted Linked Data. Linked Data describes a method of publishing structured data, automatically readable by computers, which can linked to other heterogeneous data with the purpose of becoming more useful. Trust plays a significant role in the adoption of new technologies and even more so in a sphere with such vast amounts of publicly-created data. Trust is paramount to the effective sharing and communication of tacit knowledge (Hislop, 2013). Up to now, the area of trust in Linked Data has not been adequately addressed, despite the Semantic Web stack having included a trust layer from the very beginning (Artz and Gil, 2007). Some of the most accurate data on the Semantic Web lies practically unused, while some of the most used linked data has high numbers of errors (Zaveri et al., 2013). Many of the datasets and links that exist on the Semantic Web are out ...

A Fully Differential Phase-Locked Loop With Reduced Loop Bandwidth Variation
(2011)
Collins, Diarmuid
Abstract:
Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs) are essential building blocks to wireless communications as they are responsible for implementing the frequency synthesizer within a wireless transceiver. In order to maintain the rapid pace of development thus far seen in wireless technology, the PLL must develop accordingly to meet the increasingly demanding requirements imposed on it by today's (and tomorrows) wireless devices. Specically this entails meeting stringent noise specications imposed by modern wireless standards, meeting low power consumption budgets to prolong battery lifetimes, operating under reduced supply voltages imposed by modern technology nodes and within the noisy environments of complex system-on-chip (SOC) designs, all in addition to consuming as little silicon area as possible. The ability of the PLL to achieve the above is thus key to its continual progress in enabling wireless technology achieve increasingly powerful products which increasingly benet our daily lives. A generic comparison process for documentation files
(1997)
Timmons, Michelle
Abstract:
One o f the most important stages in the localisation process is the provision of high quality help and documentation in the target languages. Translation of computer manuals and Help files consists of: (i) translating the text (ii) maintaining the formatting of the source. Although many tools are available to translators, the greatest need for standardised tools exists in the area of formatting and layout of documentation. At present a significant proportion of time allocated to this stage is spent checking that the formatting has not changed as a consequence of translation. For example, properties such as font type, font size and style (e.g. bold, italic) may accidentally be changed during translation. It is also possible that two paragraphs are combined into one, or even deleted altogether from the text. The aim of this research is to assess the viability of developing a generic comparison process for documentation files. This process should be able to take two text-based docum...

A Geography of Fear of Crime in Maynooth
(2002)
Conway, Julia
Abstract:
Geography of crime is not a new addition to the discipline of geography, many studies, mostly empirical in nature and carried out by male geographers, have been conducted in the past. Fear of crime is however regarded as a newcomer, especially in feminist studies. Geography has tended to ignore the plight of women with regard to fear of crime preferring to map areas of high crime levels and infer relationships with women’s fear. Public space is regarded by many as being patriarchal ruled and is therefore of great interest to feminist geography where they try to understand women’s use of space when fear is a contributing factor to their decision making. Division of space is of great importance when trying to understand fear of crime. As I have already stated public space is regarded as being patriarchal, under male rule thus women often feel under threat, fearing crime, especially that of a sexual nature being perpetrated by a stranger in public areas. More often than not it is the a...

A grating-tunable external-cavity laser based on a semiconductor laser diode
(1993)
Hurley, Brian Kevin
Abstract:
Conventional semiconductor laser diodes have found limited applications in the areas of spectroscopy and sensors due to their multimode output and relatively large linewidth. Although single mode operation is possible with the use of distributed feedback techniques this tends to be at the expense of tunability. However operation of a laser diode in an external cavity gives a tunable narrow-linewidth source ideal for spectroscopic and sensing applications. This work details the design and construction of a tunable extemal-cavity semiconductor diode laser. The external reflector used is a diffraction grating operating in the Littrow geometry. The collimated first order diffracted beam is focused on the antireflection coated facet of a British Telecom Research Laboratory 1 3fjm laser chip 55cm away. The cavity has been characterised using a lm focal length grating monochromator and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The laser behaved in the predicted manner exhibiting a great...

A grounded theory of the role of the directors of nursing in band one teaching hospitals in Ireland
(2006)
Hogan, Jennifer Margaret
Abstract:
It is commonly believed that concepts of power, authority and influence are synonymous. Luthans (1992) suggests that power and authority are separate but related concepts. He identifies power as the ability to get an individual or group to do something, while authority gives the person attempting to wield the power legitimacy and is actually a source of power. Unlike authority, power is not always nor does it need to be legitimate. Theories of power will be discussed and integrated into the final theory. A grounded theory methodology was used to explore the role of a sample of the Directors of Nursing in the Band One Teaching Hospitals in Ireland. In-depth interviews were held with eleven Directors of Nursing. A grounded theory of 'Powerless Responsibility’ was identified. The level of responsibility for keeping the hospital functioning is not commensurate with the level of influence and/or power that Directors of Nursing exert. Directors of Nursing in Band One Hospitals in I...

A History of Maynooth College Chapel: 1845 to 1905
(1995)
McDermott, Helen
Abstract:
The principal aim of this administrative study is to contextualise the history of Maynooth College Chapel. The objective is to elucidate the facts and circumstances which form it's history. As the present study had not been researched to any great degree the investigation is conducted through interpretation and observation of primary source material. Three main perspectives are adopted in order to highlight the national character of the chapel. The first perspective is political in it's nature. It is developed essentially throughout the first chapter. Early legislation for the college and it's consequences for the chapel are assessed. The decisions taken to initiate and to proceed with the chapel project are reviewed. Effectively chapter one sets the scene for the following chapters. The socio-economic perspect is the second perspective employed in the study. It sets up the background framework for the second chapter. This chapter deals primarily with the funding of t...

A Java based software solution for efficient pairing cryptography.
(2010)
Zou, Yejun
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with applying software Engineering techniques to pairing based cryptographic systems. In particular we evolve our existing cryptographic system to incorporate new cryptographic concepts that strengthen the system. We discuss the design approach taken to allow an advanced mathematically based cryptographic concept to be developed in a maintainable manner. We present the integration process and evolutionary impacts on the existing system. We provide some testing data on the resulting system and give an indication of its performance. The language chosen is Java and the objective is that the Java developer can easily use the resulting system with minimal knowledge of the underlying machinery. Specifically, we present, implement, and evaluate alternative approaches to the use of a standard implementation of Tate pairing in a Java-based biometric identity verification tool.

A language based on the Pi-calculus
(2005)
Tunney, David
Abstract:
The exponential increase in the volume and sensitivity of data transmitted over electronic media has resulted in a corresponding increase in attempts to secure these inherently insecure transmissions. Numerous networking protocols and associated mechanisms have been used but implementing distributed systems is a notoriously error prone exercise. Attempts to ensure the relevant properties are present in distributed systems can be made by the application of formal methods. However this application of formal methods is made to the specification of a distributed system, not its actual implementation. Typically, a wide gulf exists between the specification of a distributed system and its actual implementation, and this gulf can result in the introduction of potentially devastating errors. A method of bridging this gulf is required in order that the application of formal methods to distributed systems can become more widespread and more accessible. We propose a general purpose programming...

A Life Cycle Cost Analysis of an Irish Dwelling Retrofitted to Passive House Standard: Can Passive House Become a Cost-Optimal Low-Energy Retrofit Standard?
(2015)
Coyle, Daniel
Abstract:
<p>The Passive House standard represents perhaps the current 'state-of-the-art' in low-energy building design, often hailed by its advocates as a cost-optimal standard to be applied to both new and existing dwellings in order to achieve Ireland’s energy and CO2 reduction targets. However, meeting the rigorous standards of Passive House in existing buildings is demanding and generally requires significantly higher initial capital investments. This research conducted an investment appraisal of the Passive House retrofit standard in order to determine if it could become a cost-optimal model for the deep-retrofit of Irish dwellings. The problem was investigated using energy analysis (DEAP v3.2) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis tools (BLCC5), applied to a real-life case study Passive House dwelling retrofit project. An individual approach was developed for assessing the project’s initial capital costs, as well as future operational costs. Total life cyc...

A low cost free drifting position transmitter for the measurement of the thermocline properties
(2000)
Quehin, Sebastien
Abstract:
This thesis describes the work undertaken in the conception o f a vehicle able to observe the thermocline, the temperature and the salinity from the sea surface to 200m deep. This work includes the mechanical design of the device, termed a “ballast system” or “subsurface profiler” and the control of its velocity. This profiler is able to accommodate sensors capable of collecting such data (temperature and salinity). These sensors are provided by Sea-Sense Ltd, Galway. The profiler is designed to be disposable, auto-controlled and located by satellites in order to eliminate the recovery cost. It is designed to achieve at least two hundred cycles from the sea surface to 200m deep. Furthermore, the profiler velocity must be controlled accurately and as close as possible to O.OSm-s"1. Once the mechanical design and the selection of the appropriate sensors mounting components are achieved, the mechanical strength of the profiler, using appropriate materials, is evaluated at 200m dee...

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to establish a matnematical model for measles epidemics and to predict levels of vaccination coverage require! in Ireland in order to eradicate tne disease The emphasis througnout has oeen to derive the parameters of the model using data collected in Ireland. To achieve this a nonlinear differential equation model first oroposed by Anderson R M. and May R.M. has been adopted and adjusted to meet our application. In Chapter 1 we introduce the concept of mathematically modelling the dynamics of an infectious disease and we also propose a simple constant parameter model We then move on in Chapter 2 to discuss what is known as ”the force of the infection". This is then calculated for Ireland by testing over 100 blood samples for measles antibodies. In Chapter 3 we estimated the Irish interepidemic period using Hopf's bifurcation theorem. In Chapter 4 we move on to the more detailed model with age dependence. We also estimate the age dependent survival...

A metadata service for service oriented architectures
(2005)
King, Noel
Abstract:
Service oriented architectures provide a modern paradigm for web services allowing seamless interoperation among network applications and supporting a flexible approach to building large complex information systems. A number of industrial standards have emerged to exploit this paradigm with the development o f the J2E E and .N E T infrastructure platforms, communication protocol SOAP, d e scription language WSDL and orchestration languages BPEL, XLANG and WSCI. At the same time the Semantic Web enables automated use of ontologies to describe web services in a machine interpretable language. To enable process composition and large scale resource integration over heterogeneous sources a new research in itiative is needed. Current initiatives have identified the role of Peer-to-Peer networks and Service Oriented Architectures to enable large scale resource communication an d integration. However this approach neglects to identify or utilise the role of Semantic Web technologies to prom...

A method for modelling radio frequency deposition or etch plasma chambers using an equivalent electronic component circuit
(2004)
Cregan, Brian
Abstract:
Extensive work continues to be carried out on correlating the electric characteristics of parallel-plate discharges with an equivalent model. Theoretical models have been developed for capacitive radio frequency driven plasmas. Voltage, current and phase measurements of radio frequency discharges have been used to gain empirical data of a wide range of discharge parameters. It has been found that parasitic impedances within a plasma chamber have a substantial effect on impedance measurements of plasmas. This means that simple a priori models are inadequate for understanding plasmas. Complicated experimental setups have been used to better understand the propagation of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation through plasmas/plasma chambers. These however can not be transferred to a manufacturing environment due to non uniformity issues across a given wafer. The effect of the plasma chamber setup on plasma characteristics has been demonstrated. Although plasma processes are widely ...

A Mobile ECG Monitoring System with Context Collection
(2008)
Li, Jin Peng
Abstract:
<p>An objective of a health process is one where patients can stay healthy with the support of expert medical advice when they need it, at any location and any time. An associated aim would be the development of a system which places increased emphasis on preventative measures as a first point of contact with the patient. This research is a step along the road towards this type of preventative healthcare for cardiac patients. It seeks to develop a smart mobile ECG monitoring system that requests and records context information about what is happening around the subject when an arrhythmia event occurs. Context information about the subject’s activities of daily living will, it is hoped, provide an enriched data set for clinicians and so improve clinical decision making. As a first step towards a mobile cardiac wellness guidelines system, the focus of this work is to develop a system that can receive bio-signals wirelessly, analyzing and storing the bio-signal in a handheld devi...

A Model Driven Approach for Refactoring Heterogeneous Software Artefacts
(2016)
Dooley, Keith
Abstract:
Refactoring is the process of transforming a software system to improve its overall structure while preserving its observable behaviour. Refactoring engines are normally used to perform these transformations for efficiency and in order to avoid introducing behavioural changes into the program due to human error. Although these engines do not verify that behaviour is preserved, it is widely accepted that automated transformations are less likely to introduce errors in comparison to manual refactoring. Despite the advantages provided by refactoring engines they fall foul of certain weaknesses. Here we hypothesise that Model Driven Engineering can be used to produce improved refactoring engines that are less vulnerable to those weaknesses. We develop a Domain Specific Transformation Language for defining new composite refactorings from a set of built–in primitives and to script their application. We also develop an interpreter for the language, effectively providing an operational sema...

A model equation for the optical tunnelling problem using parabolic cylinder functions
(1989)

Abstract:
The fundamental purpose of this thesis is to estimate the exponentially small imaginary part of the eigenvalue of a second order ordinary differential equation subject to certain stated boundary conditions. This problem is modelled on a partial differential equation which arises when examining wave losses m bent fibre optic waveguides. In Chapter 1 we provide an overview of the thesis and introduce the area of mathematics known as exponential asymptotics. In Chapter 2 we investigate the physical background to the problem of energy losses due to optical tunnelling in fibre optic waveguides. We then derive the partial differential equation upon which we base our model. In Chapter 3 we commence by manipulating the partial differential equation into a more convenient form. We then outline the model problem we shall consider and obtain a preliminary estimate for the eigenvalue of this problem. In Chapter 4 we introduce the special function known as the parabolic cylinder function and de...

Abstract:
The aim of this project was to modify transmission models previously developed to describe HIV transmission in Ireland through more precise estimates of parameters delineating sexual and needle sharing behaviour and AIDS related mortality, with a view to examining the extent of spread from IVDUs to the general heterosexual population. To provide predictions on HIV transmission and AIDS cases up to the year 2010 and to examine the sensitivity of the predictions to changes in the key parameters under different assumptions on intervention strategies. Essential data of relevance to HIV transmission were acquired (through the cooperation of the Department of Health, the AIDS Resource Centre, the Drug Treatment Centre, the Ana Liffey Drug Project, and St James’s Hospital, Dublin) and analysed. The parameters obtained from the descriptive and survival analyses were used in a refined deterministic model of HIV transmission which was solved numerically. Abstract:
<p>In the late 1980’s, flying somewhere over the ocean on one of my many journeys to visit family in Ireland, I wrote this Haiku. Some years later, I re-read it while sitting in my studio surrounded by scraps of old travel tickets, letters and other ephemera. Looking at the poem once again, I began to wonder about home and to which, if any, I belonged. Late one evening, listening to the voices on BBC Radio 4 crackle over the air waves into my damp Dublin studio, I looked out at the construction sites for the city’s new steel and granite utopias and thought about the number of migrant workers silently travelling to and from these sites at the most isolated hours of the day. As the skyscrapers and new apartments heralded Ireland’s new economic, environmental and social change, I began to see, for the first time, the connections between my stories of displacement and the stories of those employed to built the new world rising around me. How shared histories impact on the represen...
