Arising from its consideration of a
number of applications, submitted
by various hospital authorities,
for the appointment of additional
consultant orthopaedic surgeons
and because of the feeling on the
part of the members that there
was a need to examine the
organisation of orthopaedic services
in the country generally, the
Comhairle decided, early in 1976,
to establish a sub-committee on
orthopaedic services under
Section 41 (7) of the Health Act,
1970. The task of the sub-committee
was one of fact-finding to
ensure that the Comhairle would
have available to it all the
necessary information to enable
policy to be deterl)1ined in the
field of orthopaedics. In addition,
the sub-committee was requested
to consult with the various
interests concerned for the purpose
of identifying the main
problems to be faced and possible
solutions to these. Finally, the
sub-committee was asked to
make recommendations to the
Comhairle on the issues which
they identified.
