Community hospitals: report of a Working Group
Department of Health (DoH)
In October, 1975, the Minister tor Health announced the Government's decisions in relation to the future development of general hospitals. In the course of a statement, issued at that time, the Minister referred. to the matter of the smaller hospitals, under the heading of "Community Hospitals" as follows: A number of the existing county hospitals will become community hospitals. It is expected that some of the larger district hospitals, such as Athlone and Ballina, will be similarly classified. The classification in each area would have to be considered carefully with the health board involved and the Minister would intend that there should be detailed discussions on this as soon as possible. Comhairle na nOspideil have produced a discussion document. The role of the smaller hospitals which should be of considerable benefit in the definition of the roles of the hospitals referred to above. The Comhairle is now publishing and circulating this document. The role of the community hospital will be highly significant in the total pattern of the health services. It iS hoped that it will provide the bridge between the specialised service. provided in the general hoapitols and the services provided by general practitioners because it should be the nah of the Minister that the latter should become involved in attending their patients 1n the community hospitals and in seeing them there in conjunction with the consultants who will visit those hospitals from the major centres.
