How do Apprentice Painters and Decorators on the Irish Standards Based Apprenticeship Experience their Learning?
(2011)
Bates, Eric
Abstract:

This thesis research set out to examine the learning experience of apprentice painters and decorators on the Irish Standards Based Apprenticeship. It focussed on three painting and decorating apprentices from the Dublin Institute of Technology who were coming towards the end of their four year apprenticeship. As such the participants had experienced the full range of possible learning on the programme. The main aim of the study was to explore the learning experiences of apprentices on the standards based apprenticeship in their own words. This would provide for unique insights into that learning experience.

The research design was interprtivism informed by a constructionist epistemology. As it was exploring the real life experience of the participants it was phenomenological in nature. The research method was one on one semi structured interviews and the data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analyses. An extensive literature...

Everyone Wants To Be Like Harvard- Or Do They: Cherishing All Missions Equally
(2011)
Hazelkorn, Ellen
Abstract:

This paper aims to review the drivers of institutional diversity, and traditional higher education system frameworks which mirrored a simplistic understanding of knowledge creation and skill/labour market requirements. It then proposes a more differentiated approach of diversity appropriate for the 21st century and reflecting the complexity of knowledge production and concepts of research and scholarship, and the trend for universal higher education. On this basis, one may observe new models of higher education institutions emerging. The paper asks how these developments might help expand our understanding of diversity, and propose policy and institutional responses, looking at various examples internationally.

Educating for Sustainability: Creating a Comprehensive, Coherent and Compelling Approach - Guidelines for Sustainability Standards and Resource Materials
(2007)

Abstract:

In 2007, Fáilte Ireland's Environment Unit, in collaboration with the Education Policy Section, commissioned a review of sustainability content in tourism education and training programmes at NQAI levels 4-8 throughout the State with a view to recommending improvements where necessary.

The review, carried out on Fáilte Ireland's behalf by the Tourism Research Centre of the Dublin Institute of Technology, was - in terms of breadth and depth - the first of its kind to be undertaken at a national level, not only in Ireland but in any of the other countries surveyed during the course of the review.

University Futures: the Direction, Shape and Provision of Higher Education in the University of the Future
(2007)

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to help create an awareness of the changing milieu within which Higher Education (HE) will operate over coming decades, while concurrently exploring its possible alternative forms. The specific objectives of the study are to review literature relevant to the University of the Future in a global, European and Irish context. We have sought to determine key trends which have the potential to affect the future of Higher Education (and the institutions charged with its delivery), under the headings of Demography, Society, Technology, Governance, Economy and Environment, and to identify different possible formats for the University of the Future.

This chapter explores students’ perspectives on the transformations that the use of technology has brought to higher education. The use of technologies in higher education facilitates flexible learning environments but the benefits to students who engage with these technologies will only be realised if the design is pedagogically sound. The pedagogic approach employed by lecturers when designing their e-learning platforms or learning management systems has the capability to transform learning. The author’s discipline is Information Technology and Business Information Systems; from experience...

Students are the end users of the Information Systems that educators use to enhance students’ learning experiences. The use of technologies in education has altered the ways in which lecturers and students can interact and has expanded the volume of information that students can access. This study was undertaken to obtain students perspectives on the uses of technologies in higher education to assist educators in improving the pedagogical design of e-learning platforms, known as learning management systems. This chapter provides students’ perspectives on the academic use of technologies in two higher education institutions in Ireland. Analysis of the responses received from three hundred and twenty students indicates that students a...
