Using a Systems Approach in Logistics Design and Planning
(2004)
Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

The international economic and business environment continues to develop at a rapid rate. Increasing interactions between economies, particularly between Europe and Asia, has raised many important issues regarding transport infrastructure, logistics and broader supply chain management. The potential exists to further stimulate trade provided that these issues are addressed in a logical and systematic manner.

However, if this potential is to be realised in practice there is a need to re-evaluate current supply chain configurations. A mismatch currently exists between the technological capability and the supply chain or logistical reality. This mismatch has sharpened the focus on the need for robust approaches to supply chain re-engineering. Traditional approaches to business re-engineering have been based on manufacturing systems engineering and business process management. A recognition that all companies exist as part of bigger supply chains has fundamen...

NetBem : business equipment energy monitoring through network auditing
(2010)
Schoofs, Anthony; Sintoni, Alex; Ruzzelli, Antonio G.; O'Hare, G. M. P. (Greg M. P.)
Abstract:
Modern office buildings are fully equipped and furnished spaces with arrangements including networked business equipment, such as PC-class machines, copiers, wireless routers and fax machines, and other electrical equipment such as home appliances e.g. coffee machines, and appliances for environmental comfort e.g. electric heaters. The unique characteristics of networked business equipment are well-defined usage pattern, low-power current draw, and connectivity to the local area network (LAN). Business equipment is generally used over working hours adding up to important costs, motivating the need for a system capable of tracking equipment usage and associated energy expenditure, as well as identifying cost saving opportunities. Techniques for monitoring power loads are generally based on power step edge detection, and cannot be applied to business equipment due to the low power consumption of individual devices. This paper presents NetBem, a novel energy monitoring technique ad hoc...

Service architecture design for E-Businesses: A pattern-based approach
(2008)
Gacitua-Decar, Veronica ; Pahl, Claus
Abstract:
E-business involves the implementation of business processes over the Web. At a technical level, this imposes an application integration problem. In a wider sense, the integration of software and business levels across organisations becomes a significant challenge. Service architectures are an increasingly adopted architectural approach for solving Enterprise Applications Integration (EAI). The adoption of this new architectural paradigm requires adaptation or creation of novel methodologies and techniques to solve the integration problem. In this paper we present the pattern-based techniques supporting a methodological framework to design service architectures for EAI. The techniques are used for services identification, for transformation from business models to service architectures and for architecture modifications.

The Implementation of Strategic Planning in Irish Hotel Groups.
(2001)
Keys, Frances Alexandra, (Thesis)
Abstract:

The primary objective of this research was to examine the relative importance and success of forty factors over the past five years (1994-1999) that have facilitated and/or impeded the implementation of strategic plans within Irish hotel groups. This research studied twenty-four hotel groups, which consisted of ninety-five strategic business units. An extensive review of strategic management literature by theorists such as Andrews(1971); Ansoff (1990); Chandler (1962); Cole (1997); Day (1984); Drucker (1969); Greenley (1986, 1989); Gupta (1986); Hayes (1985); Hofer (1973, 1976); Mintzberg (1978, 1987, 1990, 1994); Ohmae (1988); Porter (1980, 1985, 1991); Schaffer (1984); Schendel and Hatten (1972); Thompson and Strickland (1986, 1995); West and Purvis (1992); West and Olsen (1988) and Wing (1988) has contributed to the completion of this research. The findings of the research are that a manager with clear responsibility for implementation was the main contributing factor fo...

Subsidiary Entrepreneurship: an Exploratory Study
(2006)
Carolan, Enda, (Thesis)
Abstract:

This is a study of subsidiary entrepreneurship. In recent years entrepreneurship has been promoted by academics, practitioners and governmental agencies as a panacea for subsidiary managers as they attempt to sustain and grow their subsidiaries. The research question that underpins this works relates to the transposition of the concept of entrepreneurship into large nature business units of multinational corporations (MNC). Drawing on four case studies of subsidiary managers who invoke the discourse of entrepreneurship to make sense of their managerial behaviour, this study examines the difference between entrepreneurship and subsidiary entrepreneurship. There are two key findings. Firstly subsidiary entrepreneurship is markedly different from entrepreneurship, as it is classically understood. It is broader, more complex and encompasses activities such as outsourcing, intra-organisational competition and power politics. Furthermore it draws on the discourse of innovation an...

Broadening the Entrepreneurial Perspective
(2007)
Mottiar, Ziene; Ingle, Sarah
Abstract:
In this paper entrepreneurial literature is combined with industrial district literature to try and explain regional success in an Irish industrial sector. A new approach called interpreneurship is introduced as an explanatory concept for regional success in an Irish case study. A number of conclusions are drawn regarding the extent to which the interpreneurship approach is valid and the authors recommend that this is an important concept for further research.

Abstract:

Eamonn and Brian Fallon sat in their office at the Digital Hub near the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and reflected upon their success. It was a beautiful day outside and the sun shone warmly through the windows. About them on the walls was an array of awards that they had collected over the past two years. Indeed they had received a telephone call earlier that day informing them that the radio programme ‘Down To Business’ on NewsTalk 106 had selected them as a leading example of best business practice and wanted to interview them. It was yet further recognition that the decisions that they had taken in the past were paying rich dividend.

Developing Entrepreneurship Programmes for Female Members of the Irish Traveller Community
(2009)
Cooney, Thomas
Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the distinctive challenges faced by female travellers (Roma, Sinti and Gypsy) in starting their own business. Design/methodology/approach – The paper details a pilot “start your own business” programme that was delivered in Ireland to 12 women from the traveller community. Findings – Four distinct categories of entrepreneurship barriers faced by female travellers were recognised: self-esteem, traveller identity, welfare trap and family responsibilities. Research limitations/implications – The findings are based on just one programme and so no general conclusions can be drawn. Practical implications – The paper identifies the successes and failures of the programme, plus it highlights the future steps that need to be taken to bring appropriate entrepreneurship support to traveller women who experience triple discrimination – discrimination as women, as travellers and as traveller women. Originality/value – Very little is know...

Supporting Value Creation by Reducing Cultural Distance as a Barrier to Exporting
(2009)
Cooney, Thomas M; Radcliffe, Amanda; Silver, Jane A.K.
Abstract:

Value creation at the level of the organisation involves balancing the interests of several different stakeholders, with exporting occasionally viewed as a broad-based strategy capable of achieving such equilibrium. However, while much has been written concerning the logistical and economic challenges faced by SMEs wishing to avail of market opportunities abroad, there remains a dearth of information offering solutions to overcoming cultural distance as a barrier to exporting. An EU project entitled ‘Passport to Trade’ sought to provide greater insight into business culture by collating the customs and subjective norms of all member states within the EU and making the information gathered available through a dedicated website. This practice-orientated paper offers insight into the practical development of this web-based information tool that supports value creation by reducing cultural distance as a barrier to exporting.

From Federations to Global Factories: Assessing the Contribution of the Subsidiary Middle Manager in Today’s MNE
(2010)
O'Brien, Donal; Sharkey Scott, Pamela; Gibbons, Pat
Abstract:

The evolution of MNEs (Multinational Enterprises) from rigid and hierarchical structures to more distributed authority and autonomy led to the theoretical justification for conceptualising them as a federative rather than unitary organisations (Ghoshal and Bartlett, 1990). Fundamental to the Federative MNE is the suggestion that subsidiary units, through their own actions, can modify the power base and influence MNE strategy ‘from below’ (Andersson et al., 2007). Considerable research highlights the potential of subsidiary units for knowledge creation and initiative (Birkinshaw, 1997, Rugman and Verbeke, 2001, Williams, 2009), but to date it has failed to confirm that MNEs actually operate as federations. The research objective in this paper is to access the impact MNE structural developments are having on subsidiary strategy development. The actors and practices that contribute to strategy development at the subsidiary level is already a neglected research area (Dörrenbäche...

Abstract:

In academic literature, only limited research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B (Business-to-Business) e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim of this publication is a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not B2B e-Marketplaces can make a contribution to the achievement of competitive advantage in procurement in the aviation industry. The research focuses on the potential of B2B e-Marketplaces in terms of improving an airline’s competitiveness in its procurement value chain and discusses empirical results from a survey among international e-Marketplace / portal operators

The Role of 3PL Internet Technology in Supporting Extended Enterprise Integration: an Exploratory Survey
(2008)
Evangelista, Pietro; Esposito, Emilio; Sweeney, Edward; Staller, Erica
Abstract:

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is widely regarded as a key integration enabler in contemporary supply chain configurations. Additionally, as increasing numbers of manufacturers and retailers outsource significant parts of their supply chain functionality, the world has seen the vertical disintegration of supply chains. As a result of these and other developments, the extended enterprise (EE) business model has become more widely adopted in a range of sectors. In this environment, third party logistics (3PL) providers (the majority of which are small companies) may play a pivotal role in integrating physical and information flows in new business models through the use of ICT, namely through Internet websites. This paper presents the results of an exploratory, empirical investigation conducted on the website content of a sample of 153 small Italian logistics service companies. The results of the survey show managerial implications for small 3PL companies and ...

Do Different Iindustries Report Corporate Social Responsibility Differently?: An Investigation Through the Lens of Stakeholder Theory
(2008)
Sweeney, Lorraine; Coughlan, Joseph
Abstract:

The social responsibility of business has become a major issue in recent years and the reporting of such activity is becoming more prevalent. Companies are attuning to the benefits of being seen as socially responsibly and many industries are jumping on the bandwagon of reporting CSR and using different media to communicate their activities in this arena to their stakeholders. This paper considers the content of one type of such communications, the annual report, and looks at how organisations are taking a focused stakeholder view of CSR rather than a wider view as would be expected from the ambiguity of definitions of the concept. Differences in reporting practices were found by an analysis of the annual and CSR reports of 28 FTSE4Good firms focusing on a variety of industries. Findings show that there is a significant difference between how organisations in different industries report on CSR consistent with a stakeholder view of CSR, and that this reporting follows for th...

The Role of 3PLs Internet Technology in Supporting Extended Enterprise: an Exploratory Survey
(2008)
Evangelista, Pietro; Esposito, Emilio; Sweeney, Edward; Staller, Erica
Abstract:

It is well accepted that ICT and Internet technology have the potential to facilitate firms’ innovation processes as it offers new and more effective support to conduct business operations. This is particularly true in the context of Extended Enterprise (EE) concept where new technologies are critical in ensuring the effective integration of physical and information flows among participating companies (Dresner et al., 1999). The role of third party logistics providers (3PLs) in logistics outsourcing has evolved along the last few years (McKinnon, 1999). Such companies are transforming their business configuration from simple transport service providers to supply chain integrators. Internet technology (e.g. website) may play an important role in this process as it allows managing information exchange with customer and other supply chain partners more effectively (Evangelista, 2007). Despite this, there is research which indicates that logistics service companies...

The Role of the Middle Manager in the Strategy Development Process of the Multinational Subsidiary
(2009)
O'Brien, Donal; Sharkey Scott, Pamela
Abstract:

As multinational corporations (MNC) strive for long term competitiveness in complex business environments the Strategic Development Process has emerged as a potential source of competitive advantage (Grant, 2003). Despite this recognition there is limited knowledge of the strategy development process and the contributors to strategy development at the subsidiary level of the MNC. The essence of strategy development is contributing to competitive advantage through management activities (Papadakis et al, 1998), but much of the focus of research up to this point has been on the strategic relationship between subsidiary top management and corporate headquarters with little attention being paid to the internal processes of the multinational subsidiary (Bouquet and Birkinshaw, 2008). This paper contributes to theory development by investigating the role of the subsidiary middle manager in the strategic development processes of the Multinational subsidiary.

Supply Chain Integration: Challenges and Solutions
(2011)
Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

Rapid changes in technological development are forcing businesses to continuously innovate to improve their competitiveness, which is particularly evident in logistics and supply chain management (SCM), where innovation impacts both the strategic and operational levels. Supply Chain Innovation for Competing in Highly Dynamic Markets: Challenges and Solutions investigates the role of innovation in the management of supply chains of today. This book focuses on supply chain integration from both strategic and operational perspectives and the impact of information technology-related innovation in supply chain and logistics service industries. It also analyzes how environmental innovation affects logistical decisions throughout the supply chain and the strategies employed in managing logistics-related environmental impacts. Finally, the book explores theoretical and practical implications of innovation in the management of supply systems.

The IT function sits across the largest productivity generator in business over the past century. Today IT provides and supports almost all facets of organisational life and performance. The increasing levels of organisational complexity make it more difficult to know how and where IT can generate real business value. With large investments, poor project success rates, and unforgiving maintenance costs, CIOs increasingly need to navigate conflicts concerning how best to raise more value from IT – often making strategic decisions based on anecdotal evidence or an incomplete view of the end-to-end performance of the IT resource.

A Capability Maturity Framework for Sustainable Information and Communication Technology
(2011)
Donnellan, Brian; Sheridan, Charles; Curry, Edward
Abstract:
Researchers estimate that information and communication technology (ICT) is responsible for at least 2 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, in any individual business, ICT is responsible for a much higher percentage of that business's GHG footprint. Yet researchers also estimate that ICT can provide business solutions to reduce its GHG footprint fivefold. However, because the field is new and evolving, few guidelines and best practices are available. To address this issue, a consortium of leading organizations from industry, the nonprofit sector, and academia has developed and tested a framework for systematically assessing and improving SICT capabilities. The Innovation Value Institute (IVI; http://ivi.nuim.ie) consortium used an open-innovation model of collaboration, engaging academia and industry in scholarly work to create the SICT-Capability Maturity Framework (SICT-CMF), which is discussed in this paper.

The glass ceiling: cracked but not broken? evidence from a study of chartered accountants
(1996)
Monks, Kathy; Barker, Patricia
Abstract:
This paper presents the findings of the second stage of research into the career progression of chartered accountants which is focusing in particular on the careers experienced by women. The paper includes a description of hours of work, remuneration and perceived success factors in accountancy, before considering the impact of domestic responsibilities on the work/home interface. Finally, the qualities considered important by chartered accountants in their profession are evaluated. The paper concludes that women face several barriers which are not experienced by their male counterparts in their careers and that although the `glass ceiling' has been broken by some women, it is frequently at substantial cost to their personal lives.

Innovation processes and industrial districts
(2008)
Robertson, Paul L.; Jacobson, David; Langlois, Richard N.
Abstract:
In this survey, we examine the operations of innovation processes within industrial districts by exploring the ways in which differentiation, specialization, and integration affect the generation, diffusion, and use of new knowledge in such districts. We begin with an analysis of the importance of the division of labour and then investigate the effects of social embeddedness on innovation. We also consider the effect of forms of organization within industrial districts at various stages of product and process life, and we examine the negative aspects of embeddedness for innovation. We conclude with a discussion of the possible consequences of new information and communications technologies on innovation in industrial districts.
