Business, politics and money in Australia: testing economic, political and ideological explanations
(2008)
McMenamin, Iain
Abstract:
The flow of business money to political parties is a vital issue for Australian democracy. Nonetheless, there has been no systematic study of why Australian businesses contribute to political parties and why they contribute more to one party than to others. I exploit Australian Electoral Commission data on payments to parties by 450 large businesses over seven years at the Commonwealth and State levels. Economic characteristics (income and sector) are important to understanding which businesses make political contributions. However, they are little help in understanding how businesses distribute their cash. This is best interpreted as an interaction of ideological bias and political pragmatism. If Labor has the political advantage businesses tend to split contributions evenly between the ALP and the Coalition. If the Coalition has the political advantage businesses overwhelmingly target their contributions on the Liberal and National parties.

Are Economic Growth and the Variability of the Business Cycle Related? Evidence from Five European Countries
(2002)
Fountas, Stilianos
Abstract:
We use a long series of annual data that span over 100 years to examine the relationship between output growth and output growth uncertainty in five European countries. Using the GARCH methodology to proxy output growth uncertainty, we obtain two important results: First, more uncertainty about output growth leads to a higher rate of output growth in three of the five countries. Second, output growth reduces output growth uncertainty in all countries except one. Our results provide strong support to the view that macroeconomists should examine the theories of economic growth and the variability of the business cycle in tandem.

A Quantitative Study Into Grade Inflation (Perceived and Actual) in the College of Business, Dublin Institute of Technology
(2011)
Simon, Derek
Abstract:

Most academics have an opinion on the existence or otherwise of grade inflation. Some people deny the existence of grade inflation. Some argue that it is damaging to academia while some argue that it is a normal phenomenon and is not damaging while others assert that it is impossible to measure. Due to the difficulty in measurement of grade inflation this study was devised to measure firsts and distinctions to ascertain the quantity of grade inflation. This study takes a two pronged approach to discovering the real and perceived existence or otherwise of grade inflation in the College. In the first instance a comparative study of the grades achieved by final year students in the year 2000 and in the year 2010 was undertaken, the data used to ascertain this information was collected from the College computer database which serves two of the schools in the College. The information demonstrates that the number of firsts awarded to students grew by one hundred percent. In the s...

Truth commissions, the European Union and reparations from business
(2012)
Darcy, Shane
Abstract:
Truth and reconciliation commissions are an increasingly common mechanism used in post-conflict or transitional societies. These commissions might act as means of accountability, establish a record of past events, help individuals and society come to terms with a repressive past, and make recommendations for reparations for victims. This essay begins by briefly exploring the purpose, powers and processes of truth commissions. It then turns to examine the relationship between the European Union and such truth commissions. Thus far, this has largely involved the European Union playing the role of financial donor. While the principal focus of these truth commissions has been on situations outside of Europe, some of their findings have highlighted the role played by European interests during the respective conflicts or eriods of repression. The involvement of business in violations of human rights or humanitarian law is specifically examined. In the final section, the essay considers th...

From peer production to productization:a study of socially enabled business exchanges in open source service networks
(2012)
Feller, Joseph; Finnegan, Patrick; Fitzgerald, Brian; Hayes, Jeremy
Abstract:
Peer production phenomena such as open source software (OSS) have been posited as a viable alternative to traditional production models. However, community-based development often falls short of creating software “products” in the sense that consumers understand. Our research identifies an emerging business network archetype in the OSS sector, the open source service network (OSSN), which seeks to address the “productization” challenge. To do so, OSSNs must overcome the problems associated with exchanging resources between firms. We demonstrate that OSSNs overcome exchange problems by primarily relying on social, rather than legal, mechanisms; similar to the OSS communities from which they emerged. This is made possible because OSSNs use IT infrastructures that provide high visibility for primary value-creating activities. The research utilizes a multimethod theory-building approach, deriving a model from extant research, refining the model through qualitative case study analysis, a...

A policy based governance framework for cloud service process architectures
(2012)
Wang, MingXue
Abstract:
In today’s environment, the day to day business operations of organisations heavily rely on the automated business processes from enterprise IT infrastructures. The dynamic business environment and the problems with the long time implementation, high cost, etc. of process development and maintenance, are pushing organisations as process consumers to look for ready to use and shared business processes from IT providers for on demand requirements. This is manifest in the rising of Cloud Computing and Business Process Outsourcing with the development of the new concept of (business) Process as a Service. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural style commonly adopted for enterprise IT infrastructures and the implementation of service based business processes. However, the SOA style and current specifications do not intend for the case of business processes sharing with cross organisational consumers, since various requirements or the business policies of different organi...

The Entrepreneurial Process, an Assessment of a Real Life Case Study and a Theoretical Model
(2007)
Neary, Kevin, (Thesis)
Abstract:

The purpose of this work is to record and document the development cycle of an entrepreneur focusing specifically on the point of start up of the entrepreneurs business through to a key juncture when the entrepreneur sells a portion of his business. The work then examines the Klofsten Business Platform Model, a model that might be described as a self diagnostic tool for new start up ventures by entrepreneurs. The entrepreneur then analyses his business development in light of Klofstens’ Model and comments on how he feels his real life experience fits into the proposed model. After a period of reflection he then offers suggestions that he fells can supplement the model, based on his actual experiences.

Applying social network analysis to monitor web-enabled business processes
(2011)
Carroll, Noel; Richardson, Ita; Whelan, Eoin
Abstract:
The unprecedented growth in service-based business processes over a short period of time has underscored the need for understanding the mechanisms and theorising the business models and business process management adopted across many organisations today. This is more evident within the Irish health sector. This research summarises a survey of the literature and argues that the inability of current Business Process Management (BPM) techniques to visualise and monitor web-enabled business processes prevents us from transforming information on network activity and infrastructures. Thus, this research sets out to propose the need to develop a framework to enhance manager's ability to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) while improving business process restructuring practices.

Webs of Power: Multiple Ownership in Tourism Destinations
(2007)
Mottiar, Ziene; Tucker, Hazel
Abstract:
It has been widely noted in the tourism small business literature that collaboration between groups of businesses operating within clusters contributes both to business development and the success of destinations and regions. This paper aims to contribute to the research on tourism destination networks by focusing on multiple ownership, or portfolio entrepreneurship, when more than one small or micro business within a specific destination are owned by the same entrepreneur. Courtown, in Ireland and Göreme in Turkey are presented as two case studies in which the existence of multiple owners was identified. The implications of multiple ownership on tourism operation in these two destinations are examined taking, firstly, a supply side approach in studying the effect on the firms and products in the area of Courtown. Secondly, a demand side approach is taken by assessing the implications of multiple ownership for tourists in Göreme. Factors considered include implications for inter-fir...

Adaptive technologies to address operational complexity in highly configurable value chains
(2006)

Abstract:
Existing B2B infrastructure is primarily focussed on the secure, reliable, and scaleable transfer of information between business partners. The time and effort taken to establish these B2B connections has meant that the resulting business relationships tend to be long-term and rigid in nature. More recently, however, the configurability of the value chain connecting business partners has been seen as a key to competitiveness. There is increasing pressure to establish more transient ad-hoc relationships whereby dynamic decisions can be made to, for instance, exchange one partner with a more competitive alternative or to introduce new trading partners to improve the robustness of an organisations business model. This new dynamic business model introduces considerable complexity both in the need to deal with heterogeneous partner interfaces and the need to support dynamic decision-making. In this paper we explore how semantic web service technology can be combined with policy-based man...

Abstract:

It was the summer of 2006 and three friends of many years had come up with a business idea that they believed could be a money-spinner for all of them. Maria Harrison, Krystle Malone and Marie Lyons had all been students at the Dublin Institute of Technology and had recently completed their degree in Marketing. As part of their programme, they had taken a course on Entrepreneurship by way of interest rather than any deep-rooted desire to start their own business. But now, they are about to meet a venture capital company to ask for €300,000 to get the business started. They would never have dreamed, as they walked into their first class on entrepreneurship that six months later they would be in this position.

Cooney, Thomas
Abstract:

As Tom Heylen reflects upon his early days in business, he often wonders how his company Heylen bvba survived. He had left university after just one year of studying biology in order to pursue a business opportunity that he believed existed in the market and that needed to be acted upon without delay. About that time, nature had become modified to such an extent (particularly in Europe) that biodiversity could only be conserved through active management and restoration of the few natural areas which remained. Such management required innovation, specialised equipment, and knowledge in order to be successful. But those whom he spoke to for advice suggested that he should finish his degree first and then start the business. Nevertheless, Tom was passionate about the opportunity and wanted to pursue it immediately.

The Systems Approach to Analysing Supply Chains and Improving their Performance
(1999)
Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

One critical weakness of traditional company-wide business improvement models, which are often based on systems thinking, is that the focus is largely on a company’s internal operations and business processes. As a result of the increasingly complex global supply chains of which companies are part, improving ones own business is no guarantee of success in today’s business environment. This paper describes an extension of traditional systems approaches beyond the operations of an individual company to the complete supply chain. The result is the

Service networks performance analytics: a literature review
(2011)
Carroll, Noel; Wang, Yan
Abstract:
The success of developing service networks rely on obtaining a correct understanding of the end-to-end business processes. However, there are major concerns as to the lack of research efforts to examine methods to successfully manage the complexity of service networks. The insufficient communication efforts between business and technical experts results in a dissatisfactory service delivery and the inability to predict and measure the service network performance. This literature survey is initiated with purpose of finding a novel way to represent business processes in service networks and analyses the process performance. Specifically, we discuss the need to conceive tools and techniques to manage the complexity of service networks without jeopardising the performance of service networks and provide an overview of current simulation-based modelling approaches and optimising business processes.

Executive Briefing: Winning with ICT, Competing on Competency – an IT Capability Maturity Approach
(2010)
Curley, Martin; Delaney, Martin
Abstract:
Information Technology (IT) is emerging as one of the most dominant forces that are changing business, and indeed society, today. Increasingly, we are seeing the collision of Moore’s law with all types of business to produce great entrepreneurial and business opportunities. Although technology, driven by Moore’s law, is advancing at a very fast rate, the management practices used to manage and apply IT appear to be lagging significantly. Despite Nicholas Carr’s assertion that “IT doesn’t matter” many firms are increasingly using IT to create and sustain competitive advantage. However the challenges of technology complexity, demand growth, security, budget and many others make the use and conversion of technology into value unpredictable and risky. The IT profession is in a catch 22 scenario at present. IT departments are underperforming and company management is unwilling to fund IT: in fact less funding is the dominant strategy these days. CEOs invest in those areas of the business...

A mapping of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland
(2008)
Cooney, Thomas M; Flynn, Anthony
Abstract:
The research findings presented in this report represent the first major attempt to map in a systematic fashion ethnic entrepreneurial activity in Ireland. The rapid transformation of the demographic profile of Ireland in this decade through unprecedented levels of immigration has stimulated debate on the economic and social policy implications of the new multi-racial Ireland. One facet to this policy debate is the potential for non-Irish nationals to bolster indigenous business activity. It was the aim of this research to capture the essential nature of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland in 2008 with a view to better informing policy formulation as it concerns ethnic business activity. Two research objectives dictated the scope of this study. The first objective was to determine the rate of business ownership among the main foreign national ethnic groups in Ireland. From a nationwide survey of 1,108 foreign nationals resident in Ireland it was found that 12.6% claim ownership or pa...

An experimental indicator to forecast turning points
(2000)
Dalton, Padraig; Keogh, Gerard
Abstract:
The Business Cycle in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) describes the recurring cycles of expansion and slowdown in overall economic well being. A Composite Leading Indicator (CLI) is a small group of important economic indicators that can be used to predict likely future phases, or turning points, of the business cycle. The business cycle in the Irish economy is extracted in this paper using a combination of symmetric Henderson Moving Average filters. These filters are also applied to a broad range of economic indicator series that are then combined together, on the basis of cyclical conformity and lead time, to form an Experimental Composite Leading Indicator (XCLI). This exercise is undertaken for both annual and interpolated quarterly GDP data. The ability of the XCLI to predict future phases in the Irish business cycle in GDP is examined.

Abstract:

Hendrik Jan Hoogendoom and his parents sat around the family dinner table and once again discussed the key problem facing the business in which they all worked. There had been many changes in the use of their land over the past two decades but they knew that they had not yet achieved the maximum economic return from it. Currently, the primary income came from recreation activities, which were extremely successful for six months of the year. But the challenge remained on how they could keep the business equally active during the long cold winter months.
