The Business of Managing Bars

The Business of Managing Bars
(2011)
Murphy, James Peter
Abstract:

Licensed premises cannot operate without having a rigorous and sometimes scientific management approach which incorporates the continuous application of management methods and techniques. Major hospitality companies experiencing sever decline in profits sometimes hire management consulting firms to develop a strategy for reversing declining trends. Conversely, a company enjoying rapid growth and astonishingly high profitability sometimes actually look to management consultants for a way to remain successful and to expand their overall business. Bars are now trading in difficult times at present and analysing the root causes of these declining sales could help bar owners across Ireland to seize control of their destiny going forward. Bar owners need to adopt a total business management approach which regularly examines all elements of their business. This approach usually includes rigorous examination of areas such as: marketing, technology, human resources, an...

Spreading Leader Knowledge: Investigating a Participatory Mode of Knowledge Dissemination among Management Undergraduates
(2010)
Kelliher , Felicity; Harrington, Denis; Galavan, Robert
Abstract:
In this paper we discuss the need for a practitioner–academic partnership in disseminating leader knowledge among undergraduate management students, and find that in order to cultivate actionable skill development, business and academic communities should collaborate to offer a participatory approach to leadership education. The core objective is to discover sources of actionable knowledge and to decipher its optimum dissemination among management students, encompassing technical, conceptual and human kill development, through interaction with both theory and practice, in order to prepare students for active participation, and potential leadership, in the business environment. Based on a comprehensive literature review, we propose a participatory leader knowledge dissemination model, where business leaders can stimulate the academic environment, and leadership skill development can be promoted through practitioners’ active involvement in the education process. The article concludes...

The universities and management training
(1959)
Garmany, J. W.
Abstract:
The post-war years have seen a significant increase in the attention given to the problems of business management and to the devising of courses covering a wide variety of subjects but all subsumed under the general heading of management or administration and all purporting to offer useful training to those looking forward, or already in, executive positions in business. A recently published British Institute of Management conspectus lists nearly 200 such courses in the United Kingdom, most of them run by the technical colleges. In addition, many large firms have their own training programmes. The B.I.M. and its counterpart in Dublin, the Irish Management Institute, play their part by co-ordinating these activities, by stimulating interest and by disseminating thought and literature on management principles and practice.

Management accounting practices in Ireland – the preparers' perspective
(1998)
Pierce, Bernard; O'Dea, Tony
Abstract:
Management accountants were surveyed to ascertain their perceptions regarding the usage of specified management accounting techniques in their companies. Based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative data, findings are presented in relation to ten well established traditional techniques and ten of the more prominent new techniques selected from a review of current literature. The findings indicate that traditional techniques continue to dominate management accounting systems, with heavy emphasis on financial measures of control and performance evaluation. Usage of new techniques is generally low, but tends to be highest in those companies reporting high usage of traditional techniques. It is therefore suggested that the main contribution of these techniques may be in supplementing, as opposed to replacing, traditional techniques. Significant differences were found based on company ownership and size, suggesting a high degree of tailoring to suit particular circums...

Identity-portfolio-management: a data-led research study of organisational entrant engagement in processes of identity-creation and identity management
(2009)
Brunton, James
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation examines the identity-creation and identity-management processes involved in an individual’s entry into a new organisational context. This examination was achieved through the utilisation of a multi-method research design, with a quantitative component supporting the dominant qualitative component of the research study. The data collected from the participants, thirty-four first year mature students in two Irish Universities, was principally analysed utilising a discursive psychology analytic approach. The principle research findings were that the participants managed their identity-structures (identity-portfolios) through two interrelated processes. They managed their identity-portfolios through both a management of overarching narratives, acutely relevant during the identity-creation process, and through their engagement in day to day identity-management processes. The degree of success with which a participant managed these processes impacted upon their deci...

Social relations, human resource management, and knowledge transfer in work organisations: toward an integrated approach
(2008)
Alexopoulos, Angelos
Abstract:
Hailed as the basis for competitive advantage of contemporary firms, knowledge transfer has recently emerged as a key research topic in the organisation and management field. Despite wide recognition of the importance of social relations for effective knowledge transfer, there is little understanding of the micro-sociological foundations of this process, and even less understanding of the ways in which human resource management practices can support social relations conducive to knowledge transfer and sharing. The present study developed an integrated conceptual model with the aim to improve understanding of the mechanisms for and the conditions under which social relations can be transformed into useful, actionable knowledge. To test this model, quantitative data were gathered through a questionnaire survey of 135 knowledge workers from three Irish-based organisations. Qualitative data were also collected through semi-structured interviews with the human resource managers and knowl...

Implementation of quality management in the public sector versus the private sector: a cultural analysis
(2009)
Butler, John M.J.
Abstract:
This thesis reviews the Total Quality Management (TQM) literature and concludes that core to the introduction of TQM in any organisation is a need to be acutely sensitive to the cultural aspects of the organisation. This thesis proceeds to review the Organisational Culture literature and concludes that culture can be measured and changed. It also identifies four factors of Organisational Culture which facilitate measurement of the concept. As the research programme is situated in the public sector the thesis considers the very different and indeed opposing views regarding the development of the public sector and concludes, that irrespective of the strategy used, that the human factor is a key area in public sector reform. This people focus requires culture change and time to implement. The methodology employed to measure and compare organisational culture in both private and public sector organizations at two different times in the quality journey was primarily positivist and quanti...

From Business Process Management to Business Process Ecosystem
(2006)
Wang, Xiaofeng
Abstract:
New technologies, notably service oriented architectures and Web services, are enabling a third wave of business process management (BPM). Supporters claim that BPM is informed by complexity theory and that business processes can evolve and adapt to changing business circumstances. It is suggested by BPM adherents that the business/IT divide will be obliterated through a process-centric approach to systems development. The evolution of BPM and its associated technologies are explored and then coevolutionary theory is used to understand the business/IT relationship. Specifically, Kauffman¿s NKC model is applied to a business process ecosystem to bring out the implications of coevolution for the theory and practice of BPM and for the relationship between business and IT. The paper argues that a wider view of the business process ecosystem is needed to take account of the social perspective as well as the huma...

E-Business in Supply Chain Management
(2010)
Wagner, Claudia-Maria; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

E-business is concerned with the use of the Internet to link companies with their suppliers, customers and other trading partners. As a business concept, it has evolved significantly since its introduction in the 1990’s in parallel with the rapid rate of development of information technology (IT) during this period.
Supply chain management (SCM) is fundamentally concerned with integration of activities both with
and between organisations. IT plays a crucial role in SCM as a key enabler of supply chain integration
(SCI). This chapter sets out the role of e-business concepts in the context of the supply chain challenges faced by firms. It specifically explores the role of e-procurement as an example of how e-business concepts have been applied to one key SCM activity, namely purchasing and procurement. In this context, the chapter examines the nature and evolution of e-marketplaces and goes on to identify key adoption drivers and benefits base...

Abstract:
In this article we propose an approach to business process management which meets the demands of business process evolution. This approach allows for on-the-fy modifications of business processes. In contrast to many other approaches, we do not only concentrate onactivities to be carried out in business processes, but also on the datacreated and manipulated by these activities We propose to apply datamodel analysis and improvement strategies well-known from the information system field in the context of business process management.

The writing skills course as an introduction to critical practice for larger business undergraduate classes
(2011)
Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Calls for greater levels of critical thought in business and management education increased in the wake of the global financial crisis. Many business educators articulated a need to develop students who engage with theory at the deepest level in order to cultivate more socially engaged managers and management thinkers. These calls surfaced at a time when or organisations voiced concerns about the quality of the basic literacy and numeracy skills of graduates. It is often difficult to introduce students to critical practice at the undergraduate level due to larger class sizes, with the result that deeper theoretical engagement is often postponed until postgraduate stages of business education. This paper discusses the findings from an action research project conducted on a critical writing skills project which aimed to introduce a group of 95 first-year business students to the concept of critical practice through their written assignments. The research unearthed some opportunities, ...

Leadership for Business Excellence: The Gender Perspective
(2008)
DREW, EILEEN PATRICIA
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The adoption of appropriate forms of leadership in response to modern organizational needs has become a major strand of management theory and underpins the pursuit of Total Quality/Business Excellence. With some notable exceptions, most of the leadership literature ignores the gender dimension of leadership This gender blindness and the association ofh management and leadership with men is being challenged through feminist/gender studies drawing upon ideas about power, communication, empathy and equality from the women's movement. Changing gender roles have been evolving in parallel with the quest for Total Quality/Business Excellence. This paper reviews traditional and emerging theories of leadership and management and examines them in the context of changing organizational needs demanded by the adoption of quality and excellence approaches. It explores the broader range of required leadership skills, from a gender perspective, including those previously not ...

Suitable Knowledge Management in Project Environment
(2010)
Polyaninova, Taya
Abstract:
Knowledge is becoming one of the main assets for organizations that want to improve their competitiveness in currently changing market. Knowledge comes from different sources within organizations, such as internal processes, projects, customers and stakeholder information. As markets and the way of doing things changes, many companies implement different projects to deal with those changes, which leads to accumulation of knowledge and information. Companies use Knowledge Management to create, identify and distribute knowledge and experiences arising from projects within organisation. However, as projects are done to create unique deliverables and they are never the same, there is a difficulty in efficiently capturing project’s knowledge. The use of Knowledge Management in project environment sets an increasing importance, as it increases success of projects, although it brings the problem of successful creation and exchange of knowledge. This is mostly defined by the lack of defined...

The Role of Supply Chain Management in Irish Enterprise Strategy Development: a Three-Dimensional Approach
(2004)
Finn, Ciaran; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

The Irish economy has grown strongly in recent years. This, combined with other factors in the
international trading environment, has sharpened the focus on the need for innovative strategies at a
national level which can contribute positively from an enterprise strategy development perspective. As
traditional manufacturing activity has migrated to lower labour cost economies questions have been
raised concerning the role of supply chain management (SCM) in the evolving Irish business
environment. This paper describes some of the main drivers in terms of both SCM and the changing economic and business environment. It goes on to propose a three-dimensional approach to understanding the potential role of SCM in the new scenario. This in turn informs the logistics and
SCM research agenda from a national policy point of view.

A Longitudinal Perspective on Critical Issues in the Management of Information Systems in Large Organisations
(2009)
CAFFREY, EAMONN PHILIP; MCDONAGH, JOSEPH
Abstract:
Since the early 1980s, critical issues research has been a focus for many researchers with a view to contributing to both academia and practice. Critical issues in IS management were first studied in the United States, identifying the important concerns of IS management with subsequent studies turning their attention to Europe and Asia. Studies take a comparative perspective on critical issues across geographic and economic boundaries noting significant differences between developed and developing regions in particular. Studies over the last three decades has contributed to a cumulative body of knowledge which suggests that IS management is bedevilled with a consistent pattern of recurring issues across geographic boundaries which have persisted through time. Results of the study are helpful in pointing management towards a standardised set of critical issues for continuous focus.

Supply Chain Management Diffusion Among Firms in the Republic of Ireland

Abstract:

The changing business environment has sharpened the focus on the need for robust approaches to supply chain management (SCM). This is particularly the case for Ireland which has a natural disadvantage of a location peripheral to significant markets and sources of raw material which result in higher transport costs. Therefore, in order to gain unique insights of current levels of awareness / diffusion of SCM and the potential impact SCM could have on the competitiveness, a survey was conducted among 776 firms in the Republic of Ireland. The empirical results suggest that there is a need for more widespread adoption of supply chain management among Irish firms. Many firms in Ireland pay lip service to the importance of SCM elements and objectives but the majority of firms, about two thirds, have only a passing understanding of what constitutes SCM. Only 25% adopt SCM programmes and only 9% of Irish companies have a specialised SCM or logistics manager. Also worrying is the ...

Abstract:

This chapter narrates our experiences designing and teaching an international management course which was technologically enhanced to include cross-cultural interactions between the US and Denmark. Our rationale, that issues regarding globalization have accelerated the need to bring together through virtual means people from different cultures to engage in collaborative performance at a distance, was addressed in the context of theoretical concerns regarding cultural differences. We discuss the theoretical premises on which we based the course, illustrate the three core distance activities that we designed for these purposes, evaluate the general outcome in light of our objectives, and assess their value for others engaged in teaching courses such as ours. At the end, we link our experiences ...

Abstract:

The changing business environment has sharpened the focus on the need for robust approaches to supply chain management (SCM) and the improvement of supply chain capability and performance. This is particularly the case in Ireland, which has the natural disadvantage of a location peripheral to significant markets and sources of raw materials which results in relatively high transport and distribution costs. Therefore, in order to gain insights into current levels of diffusion of SCM, a survey was conducted among 776 firms in the Republic of Ireland. The empirical results suggest that there is a need for more widespread adoption of SCM among Irish firms. This is particularly the case in relation to the four main elements of SCM excellence reported on in this paper. The design of supply chain solutions is a highly skilled, knowledge-intensive and complex activity, reflected in a shift from “box moving” to the design and implementation of customised supply chain solutions. Abstract:
The DIT-ACHIEV Model for the Sustainable Management of Tourism has been developed by the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism, Dublin Institute of Technology and is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Fáilte Ireland. It explores six areas of investigation - Administration, Community, Heritage, Infrastructure, Enterprise and Visitor. The purpose of piloting this DIT- ACHIEV model in Killarney is to test its use with the objective to refine and adjust its methodology, so that it can be applied in any Irish tourism destination. Early indications are that The Model will provide the Irish tourism Industry with a valuable tool for making its product and management far more sustainable. In addition to data such as environmental measurements, information on water, waste, energy, transport, examination of local cultural, environmental and employment statistics, the model requires the undertaking of three dedicated surveys: A Resident Survey A Business Survey A Vi...

In today's telecommunication industry, the management of services is seen as a key enabler and differentiating factor in the flexible delivery of telecommunication solutions. Increased competition and globalisation of markets have created unique pressure on telecommunications service providers to support service oriented, reusable management components which can optimise the provisioning and adaptation of business and systems processes. This thesis proposes a model driven development strategy which provides integrated, but separate support for the development of reusable component designs as well as the flexible development of business process driven systems constructed using these reusable component designs. The thesis specifies two integrated development guidelines which comprise the methodology. The thesis also describes the validation and evaluation of the guidelines in two trials. These trials involve the development of a catalogue of component designs and the development ...

Integrated Logistics and Supply Chain Management: the State of Practice in Ireland

Abstract:

The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were provided with aid to offset locational disadvantages in the run up to the Single European Market. Since then the Republic has emerged as the fastest growing member of the E.U. Success has not been underpinned by the transport system, suggesting that business has had to overcome locational disadvantages by strong performance elsewhere in the supply chain. The evidence indicates that there are Irish firms operating supply chain management techniques at a truly international standard. The problem is that there are so few in that category Meeting Ireland’s competitiveness challenge means closing the gap between the small group of large and foreign-owned firms, which display excellence in SCM, and the larger group of indigenous small and medium size businesses, which do not.

Who's Minding the Kids? Work and Family Issues among Owners of Small Business Enterprises in Ireland

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the largely under-researched theme of how entrepreneurs in Ireland manage their business lives in parallel with their family commitments, with specific reference to dependent children. Since the emergence of dual-earner couples as “typical”, there has been an expanding attention to the working lives of parents and the issue of work–family conflict in the context of employment. This strand of literature sought to explain patterns of working, for example, sector of employment, hours of work and flexibility, in terms of highly gendered preferences. The discourse has moved from woman/mother/family-friendly to more gender-neutral work–life balance (WLB), in tracking the responses of organizations to the needs of their employees, in the broader context of ability to provide family care. Some research examined both sides of the “reconciliation” divide by surveying the needs of employers and employees (Drew et al., 2003; O’Brien & Shemilt, 2003). These and subsequ...

Abstract:
Despite more than a decade of hype around the concept of talent management, we still have a relatively limited knowledge regarding its application in practice. In this paper we examine how the concepts of talent management apply in research and development (R&D) settings. Two case studies of high-technology R&D groups are conducted. We adopt a novel approach and apply social network analysis (SNA) techniques to explore if the technological gatekeeper still represents a pivotal position in R&D settings. The specific talents exhibited by these individuals are then explored and we point to some organizational level interventions which can facilitate R&D organizations in fully exploiting their resources to maximize innovative capabilities.

International organisational learning: towards a research agenda
(1998)
Monks, Kathy; Walsh, James S.
Abstract:
This paper considers the nature of international organisational learning by focusing on the multinational enterprise (MNE), in particular on the ways in which MNEs co-ordinate their diverse activities, and the various units or subsidiaries which support these activities, in order to enable effective learning to take place. The organizational learning and strategic management literatures are taken as the starting point for understanding some of the theoretical issues on learning while the contextual issues are explored through the literatures which have developed in the area of international management and strategic human resource management. The literature analysis provides the basis for the set of propositions which are offered as a means of clarifying and understanding the nature of nternational organisational learning and which provide the basis for a research agenda to explore these issues in practice.
