The Role of 3PL Internet Technology in Supporting Extended Enterprise Integration: an Exploratory Survey
(2008)
Evangelista, Pietro; Esposito, Emilio; Sweeney, Edward; Staller, Erica
Abstract:

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is widely regarded as a key integration enabler in contemporary supply chain configurations. Additionally, as increasing numbers of manufacturers and retailers outsource significant parts of their supply chain functionality, the world has seen the vertical disintegration of supply chains. As a result of these and other developments, the extended enterprise (EE) business model has become more widely adopted in a range of sectors. In this environment, third party logistics (3PL) providers (the majority of which are small companies) may play a pivotal role in integrating physical and information flows in new business models through the use of ICT, namely through Internet websites. This paper presents the results of an exploratory, empirical investigation conducted on the website content of a sample of 153 small Italian logistics service companies. The results of the survey show managerial implications for small 3PL companies and ...

Do Different Iindustries Report Corporate Social Responsibility Differently?: An Investigation Through the Lens of Stakeholder Theory
(2008)
Sweeney, Lorraine; Coughlan, Joseph
Abstract:

The social responsibility of business has become a major issue in recent years and the reporting of such activity is becoming more prevalent. Companies are attuning to the benefits of being seen as socially responsibly and many industries are jumping on the bandwagon of reporting CSR and using different media to communicate their activities in this arena to their stakeholders. This paper considers the content of one type of such communications, the annual report, and looks at how organisations are taking a focused stakeholder view of CSR rather than a wider view as would be expected from the ambiguity of definitions of the concept. Differences in reporting practices were found by an analysis of the annual and CSR reports of 28 FTSE4Good firms focusing on a variety of industries. Findings show that there is a significant difference between how organisations in different industries report on CSR consistent with a stakeholder view of CSR, and that this reporting follows for th...

a Study into Developing Strategies for Internationally Competitive Irish-owned Consumer Brands
(2006)
O'Curry, Aidan, (Thesis)
Abstract:

The objectives of this study centre on researching the complexities inherent within the development of Irish owned consumer brands. This is with particular emphasis on the international development of Irish brands and the ways by which International success can be realized. There has been a notable lack of Irish successes in International markets since that achieved by brands such as Guiness, Bailey’s, and Kerrygold. Through examinination of the literature on branding and contextualization of the study considering the Irish business environment, the research aims to explore ways in which indigenous Irish brands can grow and achieve international success. The first two chapters review the literature on branding. Chapter one looks at the literature concerning the concept of a brand. Furthermore, the chapter also discusses the strategic aspect of brand management. Chapter two looks at bran management in an international sense and the Global brand concept. The Literature review...

Application of the Fractional Diffusion Equation for Predicting Market Behaviour

Application of the Fractional Diffusion Equation for Predicting Market Behaviour
(2010)
Blackledge, Jonathan
Abstract:

Most Financial modelling system rely on an underlying hypothesis known as the Eficient Market Hypothesi (EMH) including the famous BlackScholes formula for placing an option. However, the EMH has a fundamental flaw: it is based on the assumption that economic processes are normally distributed and it has long been known that this is not the case. This fundamental assumption leads to a number of shortcomings associated with using the EMH to analyse financial data which includes failure to predict the future volatility of a market share value. This paper introduces a new financial risk assessment model based on Levy statistics and considers a financial forecasting system that uses a solution to a non-stationary fractional diusion equation characterized by the Levy index. Variation in the Levy index are considered in order to assess the future volatility of financial data together with the likelihood of the markets become bear or bull dominant thereby providing a solution to s...

Dialogue and Roles in a Strategy Workshop: Discovering Patterns through Discourse Analysis
(2010)
Duffy, Martin
Abstract:

Strategy workshops are frequently used by Executive management teams to discuss and formulate strategy but are under-researched and under-reported in the academic literature. This study uses Discourse Analysis to discover participant roles and dialogic patterns in an Executive management team’s strategy workshop, together with their effect on the workshop’s operation and outcome. The study shows how the workshop participants adopt different roles through their language and content. It then identifies a dialogic pattern in the workshop discourse, with the emphasis on achieving shared understanding rather than winning the debate. The workshop facilitator’s role is shown to bring discussion as a counter balance to the group’s dialogue, focusing the evolving dialogic discourse on actionable outcomes. The study goes on to show how these two discourse features combine to enable a comprehensive exploration of a strategic topic in a limited time frame and to build a consensus ...

Using XML topic maps to create a knowledge model of postgraduate computer science degrees in Ireland for the purpose of marketing analysis
(2008)
Mulwa, Catherine
Abstract:
Marketing intelligence is a future-oriented activity that helps an organization cope in its market. It includes all ways an organization acquires and uses information. It is comprised of all kinds of information on the market and marketing research; the collection and analysis of internal data, competitive analysis; analysis and reverse engineering of competitor’s products; understanding how and where to add value for customers; and the process of synthesizing large amounts of informally gathered information about the industry and business environment. While marketing and marketing intelligence are widely used in business, they are less used in non-business organisations such as academic institutes. Yet academic institutes now find themselves in a very competitive market place, competing for students from their traditional audiences and forced to seek out new audiences for their programmes. Marketing intelligence is therefore very relevant to academic institutes. Knowledge managemen...

Sole survivors: how exceptional companies survive and thrive at the edge
(1999)
Kerins, Anto T.
Abstract:
Some companies seem born to fail, while others manage to survive and thrive despite great adversity. What are the secrets of the survivors?. Sole Survivors puts nine such companies under the microscope to discover what sets them apart from their less-successful competitors, what make them "exceptional". But these nine are neither blue-chip multinationals nor high-tech operators. They are small to medium-sized European companies in a traditional section that has been decimated in recent times-footwear manufacturing. This book tells the stories of these companies in detail from their historical development through to their current business strategies, from their organisational structures to their work processes. But the analysis doesn't just consider the cold facts and figures. By going deeply into each company, by understanding the issues and concerns of the people who work there, Sole Survivors gets to the very heart of these organisations. The stories in Sole Survivo...

The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Small Italian Logistics Enterprises

Abstract:

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is widely regarded as a key integration enabler in contemporary supply chain configurations. Furthermore, recent years have seen the vertical disintegration of supply chains as increasing numbers of manufacturers and retailers outsource significant parts of their supply chain functionality. In this environment, Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers - the majority of which are small companies - play a pivotal role. This raises important questions about the usage of ICT in this sector. However, there is a paucity of research in the field of small 3PLs with little empirical investigation into the usage of ICT by such firms. This paper presents the results of a survey on ICT systems usage in a sample of small Italian 3PLs. The results provide a technological profile of the surveyed companies, as well as an analysis of the role of ICT in customising services and of the factors influencing technology adoption

Putting Supply Chain Learning Theory into Practice: Lessons from an Irish Case
(2005)
Sweeney, Edward; Evangelista, Pietro; Passaro, Renato
Abstract:

The logistics service market is currently going through a fundamental transition. The development of closer relationships with customers and the continuous adaptation of products and services, represent potentially successful approaches to the development of improved competitive capability. To this end knowledge resources and learning processes increasingly represent key elements within the evolving framework of the 3PL business. This paper describes the case of NITL’s Foundation Certificate Programme (FCP) learning programme with specific reference to its use in addressing some of current shortcomings related to supply chain knowledge and skills in the Irish third party logistics (3PL) industry. The FCP rationale is based on the need to move from traditional approaches of supply chain organisation where the various links in the chain were measured and managed in isolation from each other and thus tended to operate at cross purposes, towards more integrated approaches.</...

B2B E-Marketplace in the Procurement Supply Chain of Airlines: a Strategic Direction for the Future?
(2004)
Wagner, Claudia-Maria; Smyth, Austin; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

With the airline industry experiencing a global economic downturn, B2B e-Business is
becoming more and more the focus of airlines’ strategies. More recently, airlines have studied
intensively the potential of joint-procurement possibilities and have taken measures in creating
consortia-led B2B e-Marketplaces as mediators for aggregating demand and to facilitate transactions.
In academic literature, limited academic research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim is to conduct a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not e-Marketplaces have the potential to add value to procurement in the aviation industry. The research focuses on the potential of B2B e-Marketplaces in terms of improving an airline’s competitiveness in its procurement value chain. The theoretical framework adopted supports the identification of barriers to success and critical success fa...

An Investigation of the Irish Road Haulage Industry’s External Environment
(2003)
Plant, Eoin; Allen, Declan; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

The movement of goods is of critical importance to an economy, especially one, which is dependent on international trade such as Ireland. Considering Irelands distribution of manufacturing and other organisations throughout the country, many firms are dependent upon road haulage effectiveness and efficiency.

In recent times there has been somewhat of a growing unease in the road haulage industry in relation to increasing cost, squeezing profit margins even tighter. An understanding of the Irish road haulier’s business environment would undoubtedly shed greater light onto their situation. The paper addresses this issue with an analysis of the industry’s competitive environment.

The first step of the research methodology was an intensive search for pertinent literature, from which a limited amount of information was obtained. A confined amount of primary research was then carried out. Purposive sampling was used to establish the requ...

Abstract:

The logistics service market is currently going through a fundamental transition. Globalisation of industrial and trade activities, mergers, acquisitions and alliances and the increasing role of ICT are rapidly transforming the 3PL industry and demanding new strategic perspectives of companies in the industry. Becoming closer to customers and continuously adapting products and services, represent potentially successful approaches to the development of competitive edge – by understanding changing market dynamics allows 3PLs to develop innovation in the services offered and leads to improved profitability. To this end knowledge resources and learning processes increasingly represent key elements within the evolving framework of the 3PL business. This paper describes the case of NITL’s Foundation Certificate Programme (FCP) learning programme with specific reference to its use in addressing some of current shortcomings related to supply chain knowledge and skills in the Irish...
