(2010)
Hegarty, Joe
Abstract:
<p>Joe Hegarty grew up in Galway city, and following his early education he joined the family hotel business in the city. A short time later he was appointed to teach at the Vocational Hotel School in Athenry, where he worked for four years. Then he left for Wolverhampton Polytechnic, where he lectured for some years. He was involved in developing courses there, and from that background he was offered a position as Head of School of Catering Management in Cathal Brugha Street in 1972. He discusses the fact that in 1978 he was one of the first group from the VEC to study for a Master’s degree at Trinity. He recalls his travels abroad, and the valuable work experience he gained as a result. He also discusses his contribution and input into the Quality Assurance Handbook, which became an important tool to achieve recognition of the fact that the colleges were unified. He details the steps in his career until his retirement in 2005.</p>

The Design and Development of Novel Cooking and Heating Products for Irish Older Adults: A Real Health Need
(2011)
White, P. J.; Devitt, Frank
Abstract:
The world’s population is ageing; researchers have an increasingly important role to play in innovating new products, appliances and services to allow for better everyday living conditions of this ageing demographic. Health, wellbeing and age in place needs are of particular importance in Ireland as research has revealed that as a nation we are living longer in ill health (McGill, 2009). The most fundamental domestic products to health, wellbeing and in the promotion of ageing in place are cooking and heating products, however little design research has been carried out in this area. To inquire into the context of usability in older adults, ethnographic research has been conducted within the homes of participant older adults to obtain a true insight into user needs in cooking and heating products. This involved a yearlong (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) study with forty participants over the age of 70 years across Ireland and from various socio-economic groups. From this study p...

Abstract:
<p>After a proliferation of logistics e-Marketplaces during the dot.com boom of 1998-2000, there has been a high rate of failure and survivals are developing much more slowly than expected. This is the case of aviation industry where a large number of B2B e-Marketplaces emerged according to the focus of aviation companies’ strategies on electronic B2B in the late 1990s. However, the current use of e-Marketplaces in the industry is low and many of them have ceased trading. The traditional e-Marketplaces model have been characterised by poor quality of portals and the lack of technical standards. Such an approach is unsustainable in today’s competitive scenario. Improvements in websites quality attributes may strongly contribute to simplify the website functionalities by users and speed-up communication with all supply chain parties. In such context, it appears of critical importance to develop models for the evaluation of e-Marketplaces web sites. This paper, afte...

Non-union employee representation, union avoidance and the managerial agenda
(2011)
Donaghey, Jimmy; Cullinane, Niall; Dundon, Tony; Dobbins, Tony
Abstract:
Non-union employee representation is an area which has attracted much interest in the voice literature. Much of the literature has been shaped by a dialogue which considers NERs as a means of union avoidance. More recently however scholars have suggested that for NERs to work in such contexts, they may need to be imbued with a higher set of functionalities to remain viable entities. Using a critical case study of a union recognition drive and managerial response in the form of an NER, this paper contributes to a more nuanced interpretation of this dialogue. A core component of the findings directly challenge existing interpretations within the field; namely that NERs are shaped by a paradox of managerial action. it is argued that the NER failed to deliver for employees because of structural remit, rather than through any paradox in managerial intent.

Women’s Careers Internationally: a Qualitative Study of Female Western Knowledge Professionals Living in the South of France
(2008)
Crowley-Henry, Marian
Abstract:
<p>This paper is founded on a qualitative PhD study researching the careers of individuals who live outside their home country on a potentially permanent basis in the South of France. It interprets the careers of the females in the sample, and the findings highlight both the personal nature of careers and the permeable career/life boundary with the females ‘morphing’ their careers over time, as circumstances dictate and opportunities facilitate. The phenomenon of ‘morphing careers’ is identified in the literature as the protean career. Specific elements from the work/life trajectory influence women’s career choices at varying points in their life and career stage, with dual careers (trailing spouse) and children responsibilities most pertinent. The specific contribution of the research study is in its contextual richness. The research was pseudo-ethnographical with the researcher living among the author-termed ‘bounded transnational’ community prior to, during, ...

Focusing on Process and History: Path Dependence
(2009)
Donnelly, Paul
Abstract:
<p>In recognition of the calls for more processual and historically informed organizational theorizing, this chapter considers the notion of path dependency, an approach which holds that a historical path of choices has the character of a branching process with a self-reinforcing dynamic such that preceding steps in a particular direction induce further movement in the same direction, thereby making the possibility of switching to some other previously credible alternative more difficult. Path dependence seeks to assess how process, sequence and temporality can be best incorporated into explanation, the focus of the researcher being on particular outcomes, temporal sequencing and the unfolding of processes over time. Thus, proceeding from a consideration of the position afforded history in the organizational literature, this chapter outlines the tenets of path dependence theory, before sketching out its application in the practice of doing research.</p>

An Empirical Investigation of Consumer Resistance to Green Product Innovation
(2011)
Claudy, Marius, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Responding to the sustainability imperative has emerged as a key challenge and opportunity for businesses. Developing and marketing innovative ―green‖ products in particular can be a vital strategy for businesses to increase productivity, develop new markets, improve corporate image and ultimately attain competitive advantage. But despite consumer sensitisation towards environmental issues, many sustainable products face slow rates of diffusion in mainstream markets as consumers‘ green preferences regularly fail to translate into adoption behaviour. In this thesis we take a consumer resistance perspective to investigate empirically the so-called attitude–behaviour gap in the context of green product innovation. The aim of this thesis is to advance theoretically and empirically our understanding of consumer resistance, to identify consumers‘ motives for resisting green innovation and to highlight strategic implications for marketers and policy makers. The research was conduc...

A Study of Clan Control in Agile Software Development Teams
(2011)
McHugh, Orla
Abstract:
Agile methodologies have become an accepted choice of methodology in the information systems development community in recent years, but few studies exist that examine control in teams that use such methodologies. This study draws on control theory to understand how agile practices facilitate the resultant characteristics of clan control in agile software development teams. The nature of agile software development encourages flexible and adaptable software development teams, who are provided with substantial control over how they work. However, research that examines this self-control is scant, with even less addressing clan control in such teams. As a result, agile software development teams have little understanding of whether and how clan control exists in their team, or the impact agile practices may have on various characteristics of clan control. This study first derives a framework from the literature that presents conditions required for clans to develop, the pre-conditions t...

Application of discrete-event simulation in health care: A review
(2009)
Thorwarth, Michael; Arisha, Amr
Abstract:
<p>The acceptance of applying process simulation in health care has significantly increased during the last decade, leading to an increase of publication in this area. Health care managers and researchers that are attracted by the idea of applying simulation in their field, desire to view methodologies and results of different simulation projects, yet may be overstrained by the large volume of the diverse literature. Thus, this paper, structured as a quick reference guide, presents a comprehensive review of process simulation applications in healthcare areas, which summarises projects applied in health care facilities like hospitals, emergency departments, intensive care units, surgical procedures, outpatient clinics, and facilities allocated in the health care supply chain. Additionally the provision of health in economic simulation models is covered within this review. Seventy articles are reviewed covering a range of the last decade that present the potential of simulation ...

Executive Briefing: Service Science: A Foundation for Service Innovation
(2010)
McLaughlin, Stephen; Paton, Robert
Abstract:
In relation to product-driven research and development, the subject of innovation within service sector industries appears to have been somewhat neglected [1]. To date, the emerging economies have tended to build their economic success upon their ability to manufacture product and secure commodities at a greatly reduced cost. As these economies develop, they too are investing in the service sector. As we speak, both India and China are producing graduates, technological infrastructures, and service capability: these large developing economies will not stand still and allow the developed economies to monopolise the high-value-add end of the service exchange – the knowledge creation and transfer process [2][3]. Service innovation, through the application of service science, offers service providers and manufacturers a means of securing knowledge leadership.

Exploring the Relationship between Design Science Research and Innovation: A Case Study of Innovation at Chevron
(2011)
Anderson, Jack; Donnellan, Brian; Hevner, Alan
Abstract:
What is the relationship between design science research and innovation? Our industry-academic collaboration poses this intriguing question and suggests a context and an experimental design for its study. We wish to understand the synergies between the active research areas of DSR and innovation by exploring their overlapping concepts and identifying unique ideas in each that have the potential to inform the other. We present a case study of an actual innovation process in Chevron as a source of empirical data for the exploration and subsequent analysis of how the application of DSR guidelines might inform the practical implementation of innovation processes.

Development of a Prototype Knowledge Discovery Portal for Energy Informatics
(2011)
Costello, Gabriel J.; Clarke, Ray; Donnellan, Brian; Lohan, John
Abstract:
This paper describes the development of a prototype knowledge dis-covery portal (KDP) for energy informatics. The research domain is Ireland which is increasingly challenged to achieve energy efficiency targets and to implement renewable energy systems (RES). The reasons for undertaken this research is to provide a mechanism to disseminate information on energy efficiency and renew-able energy technologies to a number of sectors: community, educational, indus-trial and research. The prototype KDP was developed using design-science meth-odology. The work integrates information both in the horizontal and vertical axes. In the horizontal plane it provides information to community users, educational bodies and industrial companies. In the vertical plane it allows deeper access de-pending on the requirements of the user: from technological overviews to detailed data from the energy system (solar collectors, heat pump and wind turbine). Future work will involve further development of the ...

Opening up the Agile Innovation Process
(2010)
Donnellan, Brian; Conboy, Kieran; Morgan, Lorraine; Wang, Xiaofeng
Abstract:
The objective of this panel is to discuss how firms can operate both an open and agile innovation process. In an era of unprecedented changes, companies need to be open and agile in order to adapt rapidly and maximize their innovation processes. Proponents of agile methods claim that one of the main distinctions between agile methods and their traditional bureaucratic counterparts is their drive toward creativity and innovation. However, agile methods are rarely adopted in their textbook, “vanilla” format, and are usually adopted in part or are tailored or modified to suit the organization. While we are aware that this happens, there is still limited understanding of what is actually happening in practice. Using innovation adoption theory, this panel will discuss the issues and challenges surrounding the successful adoption of agile practices. In addition, this panel will report on the obstacles and benefits reported by over 20 industrial partners engaged in a pan-European research ...

How Internet technologies impact information flows in R&D; reconsidering the technological gatekeeper
(2011)

Abstract:
Previous studies have firmly established the technological gatekeeper to be a key node in the innovation process – acquiring, translating, and disseminating external information throughout the R&D unit. However, the gatekeeper concept has received modest attention in recent times. We argue that the concept needs to be re-examined in light of the recent advances in Internet technologies that have dramatically altered how knowledge workers source and share their information. Drawing on social network analysis and interview evidence from a medical devices R&D group, we find that the gatekeeper role is still vital, but no longer needs to be performed by a single individual. Instead, the modern R&D group can keep abreast of the latest technological advances through a combination of Internet-enabled internal and external communication specialists. This study makes a number of important contributions. The gatekeeper theory is extended through the development of an updated conce...

3P-AAA framework for UCWW.
(2012)
Tairov, Dmitry
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new approach to the management of the Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) function that forms a core part of many service provider networks. The principle idea outlined is to move this function under the supervision of the trusted third parties and independent of the access network providers. This change would provide for additional flexibility through enabling users to switch their network providers depending on their current needs and the required quality of service levels. The key issue addressed in this thesis is the development of the signaling framework for the third-party AAA, which is an integral entity of the Ubiquitous Consumer Wireless World (UCWW) [1, 2] project. A review of the currently existing business models and technologies is performed in the introducing chapters of the thesis. The key issue here is to investigate what currently existing technologies and protocols could be used to provide the base f...
