Abstract:
<p>Spatially enabled computing can provide assistance to both web-based and mobile users by exploiting positional information and associated contextual knowledge. The Mobile Environmental Management System (MEMS) is a proof of concept prototype that has been developed in order to simplify administrative duties of biologists at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Canada. MEMS aims to deliver contextaware functionality aided by visualization, analysis and manipulation of spatial and attribute datasets. The resulting application delivers a set of functions and services that aids the DFO’s biologists in making everyday management decisions</p>

Triangle Grouping and Structure Recovery for 3D Building Modelling and Visualization
(2005)
Hegarty, Joe; Carswell, James
Abstract:
<p>Location based and spatial technologies research for the web has endless application for mobile/position content delivery (m-commerce or pcommerce). By exploiting the inherent location-based intelligence of the underling spatial component, relevant examples can include geometrically accurate and photo realistic virtual representations for: property assessments; land/marine information systems; routing information; on-line shopping; cultural heritage/tourist information/sites; etc. A major challenge for this technology is its reliance on professional developers when creating the virtual worlds used for web-based navigation of these services. This paper describes SAMATS, a Semi-Automated Modeling And Texturing System, which has the capability of producing geometrically accurate and photorealistic VR building models for web-based p-commerce applications from a set of geo-referenced terrestrial images. This paper describes the second of three main components that co...

SAMATS: Edge Highlighting and Intersection Rating Explained
(2005)
Hegarty, Joe; Carswell, James
Abstract:
<p>The creation of detailed 3D buildings models, and to a greater extent the creation of entire city models, has become an area of considerable research over the last couple of decades. The accurate modeling of buildings has LBS (Location Based Services) applications in entertainment, planning, tourism and e-commerce to name just a few. Many modeling systems created to date require manual correspondences to be made across the image set in order to determine the models 3D structure. This paper describes SAMATS, a Semi-Automated Modeling And Texturing System, which has the capability of producing geometrically accurate and photorealistic building models without the need for manual correspondences by using a set of geo-referenced terrestrial images. This paper gives an overview of SAMATS’ components, while describing the Edge Highlighting component and the Intersection Rating step from the Edge Recovery component in detail.</p>

Textual Case-based Reasoning for Spam Filtering: a Comparison of Feature-based and Feature-free Approaches
(2006)
Delany, Sarah Jane; Bridge, Derek
Abstract:
<p>Spam filtering is a text classification task to which Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been successfully applied. We describe the ECUE system, which classifies emails using a feature-based form of textual CBR. Then, we describe an alternative way to compute the distances between cases in a feature-free fashion, using a distance measure based on text compression. This distance measure has the advantages of having no set-up costs and being resilient to concept drift. We report an empirical comparison, which shows the feature-free approach to be more accurate than the feature-based system. These results are fairly robust over different compression algorithms in that we find that the accuracy when using a Lempel-Ziv compressor (GZip) is approximately the same as when using a statistical compressor (PPM). We note, however, that the feature-free systems take much longer to classify emails than the feature-based system. Improvements in the classification time of both k...

A Case-Based Technique for Tracking Concept Drift in Spam Filtering
(2011)
Delany, Sarah Jane; Cunningham, Padraig; Tsymbal, Alexey; Coyle, Lorcan
Abstract:
<p>Spam filtering is a particularly challenging machine learning task as the data distribution and concept being learned changes over time. It exhibits a particularly awkward form of concept drift as the change is driven by spammers wishing to circumvent spam filters. In this paper we show that lazy learning techniques are appropriate for such dynamically changing contexts. We present a case-based system for spam filtering that can learn dynamically. We evaluate its performance as the case-base is updated with new cases. We also explore the benefit of periodically redoing the feature selection process to bring new features into play. Our evaluation shows that these two levels of model update are effective in tracking concept drift</p>

Tunepal: the Traditional Musician's Toolbox
(2010)
Duggan, Bryan
Abstract:
<p>In this paper we present Tunepal, a search engine and music retrieval tool for traditional musicians that runs on an iPhone/iPod Touch (2nd generation)/iPad. Tunepal connects musicians the scores and metadata of 13,290 traditional Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Breton dance tunes. These tunes are drawn from community sources, such as the website thesession.org and “standard” references including O’Neills Dance Music of Ireland and Brendan Breathneach’s Ceol Rince Na hÉireann series. Tunes can be retrieved by typing in a title or by playing a twelve second extract from the tune on a traditional instrument. Tunepal can be used in sitiu in traditional music sessions, classes and concerts. This paper presents background information on the sources of music contained in the Tunepal corpus and describes the functionality, operation, development and usage of the app.</p>

Attitudes of Health Professionals to Electronic Data Sharing within an Integrated Care Electronic Health Record (ICEHR)
(2011)
O'Malley, Charyl; Berry, Damon; Sharp, Mary
Abstract:
It is estimated that 98,000 people die in hospitals yearly in the USA as a result of medical errors (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2009). Electronic Health Records (EHR) can offer improved patient safety. EHRs are being implemented by many countries, however, not all health professionals have welcomed them (MORI Social Research Institute, 2006). As outlined in the National Health Information Strategy (NHIS) document, Ireland has plans to introduce an EHR. Attitudes of health professionals are a significant factor for the successful implementation and adoption of a new clinical information system. This study aimed to gauge the attitude of health professionals in Ireland to electronic data sharing within an integrated care electronic health record (ICEHR). A questionnaire identified attitudes of health professionals in Ireland to EHRs. This resulted in the majority supporting the introduction of an ICEHR system and indicating patient care and safety as the reasons for th...

E-Fraud Prevention based on the Self-Authentication of e-Documents
(2010)
Blackledge, Jonathan M.; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:
We consider a method for preventing e-Fraud in which a binary image is encrypted with a floating point cipher using a convolution operation and the output quantized into a 1-bit array generating a binary image ciphertext. The output is then ‘embedded’ in a host image to hide the encrypted information. Embedding is undertaken either in the lowest 1-bit layer or multiple 1-bit layers. Decryption is accomplished by: (i) extracting the binary image from the host image; (ii) correlating the result with the original cipher. In principle, any cipher generator can be used for this purpose and the method has been designed to operate with 24-bit colour images. The approach has a variety of applications and in this paper, we focus on the authentication and self-authentication of e-documents (letters and certificates, for example) that are communicated over the Internet and are thereby vulnerable to e-Fraud (e.g. modification, editing, counterfeiting etc.).

Access rights as a part of information security in enterprises
(2008)
Golden, William; Conboy, Kieran; Acton, Thomas; Halonen, Raija
Abstract:
This paper highlights the problem with access rights as a part of information security in enterprises with many information systems and their human users. In many organisations, users often write down their user names and passwords, thus enabling outsiders to enter information systems without proper authorisation. Furthermore, access rights commonly remain active after their possessors have left the organisation or after roles in the organisation have changed. In addition, there are instances in enterprises where access rights are managed with severe deficiencies. In this study we discuss a case where this issue was found out to be in a critical state when the organisation planned to extend and specialise its business abroad. Literature exposed several approaches and concepts to be concerned with. In our paper, we introduce how we approached the problem with a pragmatic contextual view. Based on prior research we explored access rights perceived in the enterprise with the help of a...

an Exploration of the Internationalisation Process of Irish Indigenous Software SMEs
(2005)
Keeney, Kathy, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>From meagre beginnings in the 1970s, the Irish software industry has emerged as one of the most interesting, exciting and successful Irish internationally traded service industries. Some thirty years later, the industry is still characterised by high levels of international trade activity, through niche market orientation and innovative and flexible management. Through an exploration of the internationalisation process in the context of Irish indigenous software firms, this thesis seeks to understand how this process of international expansion occurs, the barriers encountered throughout the process, future challenges for the industry and the use of strategic partnership activities as a facilitator in seeking international markets. Through a qualitative research approach, future challenges for the industry and the use of strategic partnership activities as a facilitator in seeking international markets. Through a qualitative research approach, semi-structured in-depth interv...

Making OLSR Aware of Resources
(2007)
Kowalik, Karol; Keegan, Brian; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>An important element of any routing protocol used for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is the link cost function used to represent the radio link characteristic. The majority of the routing protocols for WMNs attempt to accurately characterise the radio link quality by constructing the link cost function from the measurements obtained using active probing techniques which introduces overhead. In this paper we present a modified version of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol which uses the link cost function values provided the Resource Aware Routing for mEsh (RARE) module which employs passive monitoring to gather radio link information. This results in a smaller overhead than the other methods that require active network probing and furthermore is load dependent since it does not require an access to the medium. We demonstrate the necessary modifications to OLSR required to make it work with RARE. The result of our ns-2 simulations show that such a combination (O...

Throughput Enhancement Through Combined Fragmentation and Rate Method in IEEE 802.11b WLANS
(2008)
Bykowski, Marek; Kowalik, Karol; Keegan, Brian; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>IEEE 802.11 allows for fragmentation tuning and rate selection. Their combined usage is referred sometimes to link adaptation. However, the algorithms of link adaptation are beyond the 802.11 standards. In this paper we investigate the benefits arising from proper use of link adaptation. Particularly, we develop a mathematical model describing the fragmented transmission in 802.11b. We examine potential benefits of it over AWGN and fading channels. More significantly we combine fragmentation tuning with bit-rate selection to yield the highest achievable throughput performance for any given channel conditions. Finally, we propose an algorithm that performs the optimal link adaptation.</p>

Effects of Lline Rate on vVideo QoS over Wireless Networks: an Experimental Approach
(2008)
Wallace, Stuart; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line rate adaptation schemes are typically employed in the majority of WLAN adapters, clients have no control over the line rate of their connection and consequently can suffer from a poor QoS for their video streaming services.</p>

Investigation of Across-layer Modification to the DSR Routing Protocol in Wireless Mesh Networks
(2008)
Ramadhan, Mustafa; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>This work introduces a cross-layer modification to the DSR protocol that increases the global throughput in wireless mesh networks. In our modified DSR protocol we have introduced the Access Efficiency metric as an alternative to the hop-count metric in order to improve the route selection mechanism. The selected path in the route selection mechanism is identified by choosing the path with the highest minimum Access Efficiency value. We have employed the OPNET modeller as a simulator to examine two different patterns of traffic for a series of randomly generated network topologies. Each topology was simulated twice. One simulation used the original DSR algorithm while the other utilised the modified DSR algorithm. The average throughput was recorded for each run and the percentage improvement for the particular topology was calculated. Our results demonstrate that a significant increase in the global throughput of the networks can be achieved by implementing our modified DS...

An Evaluation of a Conservative Transmit Power Control Mechanism on an Indoor 802.11 Wireless Mesh Testbed
(2008)

Abstract:
<p>Power control techniques for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have already gained considerable attention. Such techniques are particularly attractive because they can improve various aspects of wireless network operation such as interference mitigation, spatial reuse in dense wireless deployments, topology control, and link quality enhancement. In this paper we propose a novel delivery ration based Conservative Transmit Power Control (ConTPC) mechanism. Our implementation is conservative when it comes to deciding if the transmit power should be reduced for a given link. This is because we do not want poor quality wireless links to further reduce their quality and be overwhelmed by other links transmitting at maximum power. We have experimentally evaluated the benefit of the proposed power control scheme when compared with fixed power level systems. We show that our ConTPC mechanism can increase the throughput, however the magnitude of this enhancement largely depends on th...

Practical Issues of Power Control in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Devices

Abstract:
<p>Power control techniques for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have already gained much attention. Such techniques are particularly attractive because they can improve various aspects of wireless network operations such as interference mitigation, spatial reuse in dense wireless deployments, topology control, and link quality enhancement. However, until recently implementing such advanced power control using off-the-shelf wireless devices was not considered possible. For example, Abdesslem et al. [1] stated that “many novel power control solutions cannot be efficiently implemented over existing IEEE 802.11 cards”. However, in this paper we demonstrate that power control is now feasible and can be implemented in current IEEE 802.11 cards with per-packet granularity and low power switching latency.</p>

Abstract:
<p>An important element of any routing protocol used for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is the link cost function used to represent the radio link characteristic. The majority of the routing protocols for WMNs attempt to accurately characterise the radio link quality by constructing the link cost function from the measurements obtained using active probing techniques, which introduces overhead. In this paper we propose a new approach called Resource Aware Routing for mEsh (RARE) which instead employs passive monitoring to gather radio link information. Moreover, se show that our RARE approach performs well in a real radio environment through a number of experiments performed on a static 17 node WLAN mesh testbed.</p>

Abstract:
Machine-understandable data constitutes the basis for the Semantic Desktop. We provide in this paper means to author and annotate Semantic Documents on the Desktop. In our approach, the PDF file format is the basis for semantic documents, which store both a document and the related metadata in a single file. To achieve this we provide a framework, SALT that extends the Latex writing environment and supports the creation of metadata for scientific publications. SALT lets the scientific author create metadata while putting together the content of a research paper. We discuss some of the requirements one has to meet when developing such an ontology-based writing environment and we describe a usage scenario.

Knowledge Management in a Project Environment: Organisational CT and Project Influences
(2011)
Polyaninova, Taya
Abstract:
<p>During a project implementation various forms of information and experience are generated within the organization. If this accumulated knowledge is not recorded and shared amongst other projects, this knowledge will be lost and no longer be available to assist future projects. This may lead to increased future projects costs as resources, time and money will be wasted on redefining the knowledge that once existed within the company. By not capturing and redeploying this knowledge, the quality of a project’s deliverables may adversely suffer. First the publication reviews the concept of project knowledge management. It defines the reasons for managing project knowledge, the benefits it brings to organizations and challenges that exist within the organization that prevent the process from being successfully deployed. Secondly, the sources of knowledge within projects and strategies that can be used by organizations to manage this knowledge are reviewed. Further more the pape...

Intelligibility of Electrolarynx Speech Using a Novel Actuator
(2011)

Abstract:
During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. Following a laryngectomy, some people speak using an electrolarynx which replaces the excitatory function of the absent larynx. Drawbacks of conventional electrolarynx designs include the buzzing monotonic sound emitted, the need for a free hand to operate the device, and difficulty experienced by many laryngectomees in adapting to its use. Despite these shortcomings, it remains the preferred method of speech rehabilitation for a substantial minority of laryngectomees. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal phonation. As part of the ongoing development of a hands-free alternative to the conventional electrolarynx, the authors have developed a novel actuator which is based on a lightweight pager motor similar to those used...

Terminology Enhanced EHR: integration of archetypes and terminology, an implementation experience
(2011)
Yu, Sheng; Berry, Damon
Abstract:
The integration of terminology and EHR information models is an important step in the journey towards semantic interoperability. Archetypes and two-level models for EHRs provide a mechanism that not only applies constraints on clinical content but also ensures effective terminology binding. However the lack of a standardised mechanism to bind terminology to the EHR and the difficulty of systematically coding clinical content, has led to a number of possible implementation choices. This study presents a review of the problems that may occur when working with modern terminology systems and discusses some related state of art technologies. The paper aims to share the experience of prototyping a minimum terminology integration service. A set of tools utilising medical text processing and a customised SNOMED-CT data source are the output of prototyping that enables quick processing of archetypes and automatic link suggestions to SNOMED-CT. The elaboration of prototypes of this sort can ...

A quiet success story in the laboratory: survey of 30 implementations of the ASTM 1394 standard for analyser interfaces
(2011)

Abstract:
In 1991 the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) introduced the first version of a standard called ASTM E1394-91 for communication between centralised clinical analysers and host systems. For nearly 20 years this low key standard has been used as the basis for analyser host communications. A minor revision of the standard (ASTM1394-97) was published in 1998. This work gives a brief summary of the development of lab messages that led to the introduction and continued use of the standard. The authors also present a review and preliminary analysis of 30 implementations of ASTM E1394. The authors investigated 30 relevant analyser interfaces in order to identify the successfuland unsuccessful features of the ASTM E1394-97 standard by assessing the compliance and non-compliance of the chosen implementations with respect to different features of the standard.
